Simulation of DAMPE silicon microstrip detectors in the $\rm Allpix^{2}$ framework

Silicon strip detectors have been widely utilized in space experiments for gamma-ray and cosmic-ray detections thanks to their high spatial resolution and stable performance. For a silicon micro-strip detector, the Monte Carlo simulation is recognized as a practical and cost-effective approach to verify the detector performance. In this study, a technique for the simulation of the silicon micro-strip detector with the $\rm Allpix^{2}$ framework is developed. By incorporating the electric field into the particle transport simulation based on Geant4, this framework could precisely emulate the carrier drift in the silicon micro-strip detector. The simulation results are validated using the beam test data as well as the flight data of the DAMPE experiment, which suggests that the $\rm Allpix^{2}$ framework is a powerful tool to obtain the performance of the silicon micro-strip detector.

Searching for gravitational-wave bursts with space-borne detectors

The millihertz gravitational wave band is expected to be opened by space-borne detectors like TianQin. Various mechanisms can produce short outbursts of gravitational waves, whose actual waveform can be hard to model. In order to identify such gravitational wave bursts and not to misclassify them as noise transients, we proposed a proof-of-principle energy excess method, that utilized the signal-insensitive channel to veto noise transients. We perform a test on simulated data, and for bursts with a signal-to-noise ratio of 20, even with the contamination of noise transient, our methods can reach a detection efficiency of 97.4% under a false alarm rate of once per year. However, more frequent occurrences of noise transients would lower the detection efficiency.

Capacitive coupling study of the HERD SCD prototype: preliminary results

The Silicon Charge Detector (SCD) is a subdetector of the High Energy Cosmic Radiation Detection payload. The dynamic range of the silicon microstrip detector can be extended by the capacitive coupling effect, which is related to the interstrip capacitance and the coupling capacitance. A detector prototype with several sets of parameters was designed and tested in the ion beams at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The capacitive coupling fractions with readout strip and floating strip incidences were studied using the beam test data and SPICE simulation.

An Opacity-Free Method of Testing the Cosmic Distance Duality Relation Using Strongly Lensed Gravitational Wave Signals

The cosmic distance duality relation (CDDR), expressed as DL(z) = (1 + z)2DA(z), plays an important role in modern cosmology. In this paper, we propose a new method of testing CDDR using strongly lensed gravitational wave (SLGW) signals. Under the geometric optics approximation, we calculate the gravitational lens effects of two lens models, the point mass and singular isothermal sphere. We use functions of η1(z) = 1 + η0z and η2(z) = 1 + η0z=(1 + z) to parameterize the deviation of CDDR. By reparameterizing the SLGW waveform with CDDR and the distance-redshift relation, we include the deviation parameters η0 of CDDR as waveform parameters. We evaluate the ability of this method by calculating the parameter estimation of simulated SLGW signals from massive binary black holes. We apply the Fisher information matrix and Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods to calculate parameter estimation. We find that with only one SLGW signal, the measurement precision of η0 can reach a considerable level of 0.5-1.3% for η1(z) and 1.1-2.6% for η2(z), depending on the lens model and parameters.

Bayesian parameter estimation of massive black hole binaries with TianQin-LISA

This paper analyses the impact of various parameter changes on the estimation of parameters for massive black hole binary (MBHB) systems using a Bayesian inference technique. Several designed MBHB systems were chosen for comparison with a fiducial system to explore the influence of parameters such as sky location, inclination angle, anti-spin, large mass ratio and light mass. And the two reported MBHB candidates named OJ287 and Tick-Tock are also considered. The study found that the network of TianQin and LISA can break certain degeneracies among different parameters, improving the estimation of parameters, particularly for extrinsic parameters. Meanwhile, the degeneracies between different intrinsic parameters are highly sensitive to the value of the parameters. Additionally, the small inclination angles and limited detection of the inspiral phase can introduce significant bias in the estimation of parameters. The presence of instrument noise will also introduce bias and worsen the precision. The paper concludes that the network of TianQin and LISA can significantly improve the estimation of extrinsic parameters by about one order of magnitude while yielding slight improvements in the intrinsic parameters. Moreover, parameter estimation can still be subject to biases even with a sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratio if the detected signal does not encompass all stages of the inspiral, merger, and ringdown.

Parameter Estimation of Stellar Mass Binary Black Holes under the Network of TianQin and LISA

We present a Bayesian parameter estimation progress to infer the stellar mass binary black hole properties by TianQin, LISA, and TianQin+LISA.Two typical stellar mass black hole binary systems, GW150914 and GW190521 are chosen as the fiducial sources. In this work, we establish the ability of TianQin to infer the parameters of those systems and first apply the full frequency response in TianQin's data analysis. We obtain the parameter estimation results and explain the correlation between them. We also find the TianQin+LISA could marginally increase the parameter estimation precision and narrow the $1σ$ area compared with TianQin and LISA individual observations. We finally demonstrate the importance of considering the effect of spin when the binaries have a nonzero component spin and great deviation will appear especially on mass, coalescence time and sky location.

Detection of astrophysical gravitational wave sources by TianQin and LISA

TianQin and LISA are space-based laser interferometer gravitational wave (GW) detectors planned to be launched in the mid-2030s. Both detectors will detect low-frequency GWs around $10^{-2}\,{\rm Hz}$, however, TianQin is more sensitive to frequencies above this common sweet-spot while LISA is more sensitive to frequencies below $10^{-2}\,{\rm Hz}$. Therefore, TianQin and LISA will be able to detect the same sources but with different accuracy depending on the source and its parameters. We consider some of the most important astrophysical sources -- massive black hole binaries, stellar-mass black hole binaries, double white dwarfs, extreme mass ratio inspirals, light and heavy intermediate mass ratio inspirals, as well as the stochastic gravitational background of astrophysical origin -- that TianQin and LISA will be able to detect. For each of these sources, we analyze how far they can be detected (detection distance) and how well their parameters can be measured (detection accuracy) using a Fisher Matrix analysis. We compare the results obtained by the three detection scenarios (TianQin alone, LISA alone, and joint detection by LISA and TianQin) highlighting the gains from joint detection as well as the contribution of TianQin and LISA to a combined study of astrophysical sources. In particular, we consider the different orientations, lifetimes, and duty cycles of the two detectors to explore how they can give a more complete picture when working together.

Observing white dwarf tidal stripping with TianQin gravitational wave observatory

Recently discovered regular X-ray bursts known as quasi-periodic eruptions have a proposed model that suggests a tidal stripping white dwarf inspiralling into the galaxy's central black hole on an eccentric orbit. According to this model, the interaction of the stripping white dwarf with the central black hole would emit gravitational wave signals as well, their detection can help explore the formation mechanism of quasi-periodic eruptions and facilitate multi-messenger observations. In this paper, we aim to perform a preliminary study of the gravitation wave observation of TianQin on this stripping white dwarf model. We investigated the horizon distance of TianQin on this type of gravitation wave signal and found it can be set to 200Mpc. We also find that those stripping white dwarf model sources with central black hole mass within $10^4\sim10^{5.5}M_\odot$ are more likely to be detected by TianQin. We assessed the parameter estimation precision of TianQin on those stripping white dwarf model sources. Our result shows that, even in the worst case, TianQin can determine the central black hole mass, the white dwarf mass, the central black hole spin, and the orbital initial eccentricity with a precision of $10^{-2}$. In the optimistic case, TianQin can determine the central black hole mass and the white dwarf mass with a precision of $10^{-7}$, determine the central black hole spin with a precision of $10^{-5}$, and determine the orbital initial eccentricity with a precision of $10^{-8}$. Moreover, TianQin can determine the luminosity distance with a precision of $10^{-1}$ and determine the sky localization with a precision of $10^{-2}\sim10$ $\rm deg^2$.

Measuring the Hubble Constant Using Strongly Lensed Gravitational Wave Signals

The measurement of the Hubble constant $H_0$ plays an important role in the study of cosmology. In this letter, we propose a new method to constrain the Hubble constant using the strongly lensed gravitational wave (GW) signals. By reparameterizing the waveform, we find that the lensed waveform is sensitive to the $H_0$. Assuming the scenario that no electromagnetic counterpart of the GW source can be identified, our method can still give meaningful constraints on the $H_0$ with the information of the lens redshift. We then apply Fisher information matrix and Markov Chain Monte Carlo to evaluate the potential of this method. For the space-based GW detector, TianQin, the $H_0$ can be constrained within a relative error of $\sim$ 0.3-2\%, using a single strongly lensed GW event. Precision varies according to different levels of electromagnetic information.

Impact of combinations of time-delay interferometry channels on stochastic gravitational wave background detection

The method of time delay interferometry (TDI) is proposed to cancel the laser noise in space-borne gravitational-wave detectors. Among all different TDI combinations, the most commonly used ones are the orthogonal channels A, E and T, where A and E are signal-sensitive and T is signal-insensitive. Meanwhile, for the detection of stochastic gravitational-wave background, one needs to introduce the overlap reduction function to characterize the correlation between channels. For the calculation of overlap reduction function, it is often convenient to work in the low-frequency approximation, and assuming the equal-arm Michelson channels. However, if one wishes to work on the overlap reduction function of $\rm A/E$ channels, then the low-frequency approximation fails. We derive the exact form of overlap reduction function for $\rm A/E$ channels. Based on the overlap reduction function, we calculate the sensitivity curves of TianQin, TianQin I+II and TianQin + LISA. We conclude that the detection sensitivity calculated with $\rm A/E$ channels is mostly consistent with that obtained from the equal-arm Michelson channels.

Constraining the Extra Polarization Modes of Gravitational Waves with Double White Dwarfs

The detection of gravitational wave (GW) has opened a new window to test the theory of gravity in the strong field regime. In general relativity (GR), GW can only possess two tensor polarization modes, which are known as the $+$ and $\times$ modes. However, vector and scalar modes can exist in some modified theories of gravity, and we can test the gravitational theories by probing these extra polarization modes. As a space-borne GW detector, TianQin will be launched in the 2030s, and it is expected to observe plenty of GW signals, including those from nearly ten-thousands double white dwarfs (DWDs) in our galaxy. This offers an excellent chance for testing the existence of extra polarization modes. In this article, we analyze the capability of detecting the extra polarization modes with DWDs. For the extra modes, we consider both the leading order dipole radiation and the subleading quadrupole radiation. We find that the capability of TianQin has very strong dependency on the source orientation. We also analyze all the verification binaries with determined position and frequency, and find that ZTF J1539 can give the best constraint on the extra polarization modes. We have also considered the case of TianQin twin constellation, and the joint observation with LISA.

An implementation of Galactic white dwarf binary data analysis for MLDC-3.1

The space-borne gravitational wave detectors will observe a large population of double white dwarf binaries in the Milky Way. However, the search for double white dwarfs in the gravitational wave data will be time-consuming due to the large number of templates involved and antenna response calculation. In this paper, we implement an iterative combinatorial algorithm to search for double white dwarfs in MLDC-3.1 data. To quickly determine the rough parameters of the target sources, the following algorithms are adopted in a coarse search process: (1) using the downsampling method to reduce the number of original data points; (2) using the undersampling method to speed up the generation of a single waveform template; (3) using the stochastic template bank method to quickly construct the waveform template bank while achieving high coverage of the parameter space; (4) Combining the FFT acceleration algorithm with the stochastic template bank to reduce the calculation time of a single template. A fine search process is applied to further determine the parameters of the signals based on the coarse search, for which we adopt the particle swarm optimization. Finally, we detected $\mathcal{O}(10^4)$ double white dwarf signals, validating the feasibility of our method.

Construction and Validation of a Geometry-based Mathematical Model for the Hard X-ray Imager

Quantitative and analytical analysis of modulation process of the collimator is a great challenge, and is also of great value to the design and development of Fourier transform imaging telescopes. The Hard X-ray Imager (HXI), as one of the three payloads onboard the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory(ASO-S) mission, adopts modulating Fourier-Transformation imaging technique and will be used to explore mechanism of energy release and transmission in solar flare activities. As an important step to reconstruct the images of solar flares, accurate modulation functions of HXI are needed. In this paper, a mathematical model is developed to analyze the modulation function under a simplified condition first. Then its behavior under six degrees of freedom is calculated after adding the rotation matrix and translation change to the model. In addition, unparalleled light and extended sources also are considered so that our model can be used to analyze the X-ray beam experiment. Next, applied to the practical HXI conditions, the model has been confirmed not only by Geant4 simulations but also by some verification experiments. Furthermore, how this model helps to improve the image reconstruction process after the launch of ASO-S is also presented.

Search for gamma-ray spectral lines with the DArk Matter Particle Explorer

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is well suitable for searching for monochromatic and sharp $γ$-ray structures in the GeV$-$TeV range thanks to its unprecedented high energy resolution. In this work, we search for $γ$-ray line structures using five years of DAMPE data. To improve the sensitivity, we develop two types of dedicated data sets (including the BgoOnly data which is the first time to be used in the data analysis for the calorimeter-based gamma-ray observatories) and adopt the signal-to-noise ratio optimized regions of interest (ROIs) for different DM density profiles. No line signals or candidates are found between 10 and 300 GeV in the Galaxy. The constraints on the velocity-averaged cross section for $χχ\to γγ$ and the decay lifetime for $χ\to γν$, both at 95% confidence level, have been calculated and the systematic uncertainties have been taken into account. Comparing to the previous Fermi-LAT results, though DAMPE has an acceptance smaller by a factor of $\sim 10$, similar constraints on the DM parameters are achieved and below 100 GeV the lower limits on the decay lifetime are even stronger by a factor of a few. Our results demonstrate the potential of high-energy-resolution observations on dark matter detection.

Detecting the stochastic gravitational wave background with the TianQin detector

The detection of stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) is among the leading scientific goals of the space-borne gravitational wave observatory, which would have significant impact on astrophysics and fundamental physics. In this work, we developed a data analysis software, \texttt{TQSGWB}, which can extract isotropic SGWB using the Bayes analysis method based on the TianQin detector. We find that for the noise cross spectrum, there are imaginary components and they play an important role in breaking the degeneracy of the position noise in the common laser link. When the imaginary corrections are considered, the credible regions of the position noise parameters are reduced by two orders of magnitude. We demonstrate that the parameters of various signals and instrumental noise could be estimated directly in the absence of a Galactic confusion foreground through Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling. With only a three-month observation, we find that TianQin could be able to confidently detect SGWBs with energy density as low as $Ω_{\rm PL} = 1.3 \times 10^{-12}$, $Ω_{\rm Flat} = 6.0 \times 10^{-12}$, and $Ω_{\rm SP} = 9.0 \times 10^{-12}$, for power-law, flat, and single-peak models respectively.

Dark-siren Cosmology with Decihertz Gravitational-wave Detectors

Gravitational waves (GWs) originated from mergers of stellar-mass binary black holes (SBBHs) are considered as dark sirens in cosmology since they usually do not have electromagnetic counterparts. In order to study cosmos with these events, we not only need the luminosity distances extracted from GW signals, but also require the redshift information of sources via, say, matching GW sky localization with galaxy catalogs. Based on such a methodology, we explore how well decihertz GW detectors, DO-Optimal and DECIGO, can constrain cosmological parameters. Using Monte-Carlo simulated dark sirens, we find that DO-Optimal can constrain the Hubble parameter to ${σ_{H_0}} / {H_0}\, \lesssim 0.23\%$ when estimating $H_0$ alone, while DECIGO performs better by a factor of 5 with ${σ_{H_0}} / {H_0}\lesssim 0.043\%$. Such a good precision of $H_0$ will shed light on the $H_0$ tension. For multiple-parameter estimation, DECIGO can still reach a level of relative uncertainty smaller than $7\%$. The reason why decihertz detectors perform well is explained by their large numbers of SBBH GW events with good distance and angular resolution.

Extreme-mass-ratio burst detection with TianQin

The capture of compact objects by massive black holes in galaxies or dwarf galaxies will generate short gravitational wave signals, called extreme-mass-ratio bursts (EMRBs), before evolving into extreme-mass-ratio inspirals. Their detection will provide an investigation of the black hole properties and shed light on astronomy and astrophysics. In this work, we investigate the detection number of the TianQin observatory on EMRBs. Our result shows that TianQin can detect tens of EMRBs events during its mission lifetime. For those detected events, we use the Fisher information matrix to quantify these uncertainties in the inference of their parameters. We consider the possible network of TianQin+LISA and study how a network can improve parameter estimation. The result shows that, for most sources, the CO mass, the MBH mass, and the MBH spin can be determined with an accuracy of the order $10^{-1}$ and the sky localization can be determined with an accuracy of 10 square degrees. We further explore the gravitational wave background generated by those unsolved EMRBs and conclude that it is about $10^6$ times weaker than TianQin's sensitivity and thus it can be ignored.

Constraining the cosmological parameters using gravitational wave observations of massive black hole binaries and statistical redshift information

Space-borne gravitational wave detectors like TianQin are expected to detect GW signals emitted by the mergers of massive black hole binaries. Luminosity distance information can be obtained from GW observations, and one can perform cosmological inference if redshift information can also be extracted, which would be straightforward if an electromagnetic counterpart exists. In this paper, we concentrate on the conservative scenario where the EM counterparts are not available, and comprehensively study if cosmological parameters can be inferred through a statistical approach, utilizing the non-uniform distribution of galaxies as well as the black hole mass-host galaxy bulge luminosity relationship. By adopting different massive black hole binary merger models, and assuming different detector configurations, we conclude that the statistical inference of cosmological parameters is indeed possible. TianQin is expected to constrain the Hubble constant to a relative error of about 4%-7%, depending on the underlying model. The multidetector network of TianQin and LISA can significantly improve the precision of cosmological parameters. In the most favorable model, it is possible to achieve a level of 1.7% with a network of TianQin and LISA. We find that without EM counterparts, constraints on all other parameters need a larger number of events or more precise sky localization of GW sources, which can be achieved by the multidetector network or under a favorable model for massive black hole mergers. However, in the optimistic case, where EM counterparts are available, one can obtain useful constraints on all cosmological parameters in the Lambda-CDM cosmology, regardless of the population model. Moreover, we can also constrain the equation of state of the dark energy without the EM counterparts, and it is even possible to study the evolution of EoS of the DE when the EM counterparts are observed.
