On the Elliptic Calabi-Yau Fourfold with Maximal $h^{1,1}$

In this paper, we explicitly construct the smooth compact base threefold for the elliptic Calabi-Yau fourfold with the largest known $h^{1,1}=303\,148$. It is generated by blowing up a smooth toric "seed" base threefold with $(E_8,E_8,E_8)$ collisions. The 4d F-theory compactification model over it has the largest geometric gauge group, $E_8^{2\,561}\times F_4^{7\,576}\times G_2^{20\,168}\times SU(2)^{30\,200}$, and the largest number of axions, $181\,820$, in the known 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity landscape. We also prove that there are at least $1100^{15\,048}\approx 7.5\times 10^{45\,766}$ different flip and flop phases of this base threefold. Moreover, we find that many other base threefolds with large $h^{1,1}$ in the 4d F-theory landscape can be constructed in a similar way as well.

5d Superconformal Field Theories and Graphs

We propose a graph-theoretic description to determine and characterize 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) that arise as circle reductions of 6d $\mathcal{N} = (1,0)$ SCFTs. Each 5d SCFT is captured by a graph, called a Combined Fiber Diagram (CFD). Transitions between CFDs encode mass deformations that trigger flows between SCFTs. In this way, the complete set of descendants of a given 6d theory are obtained from a single marginal CFD. The graphs encode key physical information like the superconformal flavor symmetry and BPS states. As an illustration, we ascertain the aforementioned data associated to all the 5d SCFTs descending from 6d minimal $(E_6, E_6)$ and $(D_k, D_k)$ conformal matter for any $k$. This includes predictions for thus far unknown flavor symmetry enhancements.

E-string spectrum and typical F-theory geometry

In recent scans of 4D F-theory geometric models, it was shown that a dominant majority of the base geometries only support SU(2), $G_2$, $F_4$ and $E_8$ gauge groups. Moreover, most of these gauge groups are shown to couple to strongly coupled "conformal matter" sectors. For example, the $E_8$ gauge group can couple to the compactification of 6D E-string theory on a complex curve. In this paper, we initiate the investigation of these strongly coupled sectors by studying the spectrum of 6D E-string theory. We construct a resolved elliptic Calabi-Yau threefold of a non-minimal Weierstrass model, which contains a non-flat fiber with the topology of generalized del Pezzo surface. The spectrum of E-string theory then arises from M2 brane wrapping modes on various 2-cycles on the non-flat fiber. Finally, we discuss the compactification of these fields to 4D.

Learning non-Higgsable gauge groups in 4D F-theory

We apply machine learning techniques to solve a specific classification problem in 4D F-theory. For a divisor $D$ on a given complex threefold base, we want to read out the non-Higgsable gauge group on it using local geometric information near $D$. The input features are the triple intersection numbers among divisors near $D$ and the output label is the non-Higgsable gauge group. We use decision tree to solve this problem and achieved 85%-98% out-of-sample accuracies for different classes of divisors, where the data sets are generated from toric threefold bases without (4,6) curves. We have explicitly generated a large number of analytic rules directly from the decision tree and proved a small number of them. As a crosscheck, we applied these decision trees on bases with (4,6) curves as well and achieved high accuracies. Additionally, we have trained a decision tree to distinguish toric (4,6) curves as well. Finally, we present an application of these analytic rules to construct local base configurations with interesting gauge groups such as SU(3).

Scanning the skeleton of the 4D F-theory landscape

Using a one-way Monte Carlo algorithm from several different starting points, we get an approximation to the distribution of toric threefold bases that can be used in four-dimensional F-theory compactification. We separate the threefold bases into "resolvable" ones where the Weierstrass polynomials $(f,g)$ can vanish to order (4,6) or higher on codimension-two loci and the "good" bases where these (4,6) loci are not allowed. A simple estimate suggests that the number of distinct resolvable base geometries exceeds $10^{3000}$, with over $10^{250}$ "good" bases, though the actual numbers are likely much larger. We find that the good bases are concentrated at specific "end points" with special isolated values of $h^{1,1}$ that are bigger than 1,000. These end point bases give Calabi-Yau fourfolds with specific Hodge numbers mirror to elliptic fibrations over simple threefolds. The non-Higgsable gauge groups on the end point bases are almost entirely made of products of $E_8$, $F_4$, $G_2$ and SU(2). Nonetheless, we find a large class of good bases with a single non-Higgsable SU(3). Moreover, by randomly contracting the end point bases, we find many resolvable bases with $h^{1,1}(B)\sim 50-200$ that cannot be contracted to another smooth threefold base.

Non-toric bases for elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds and 6D F-theory vacua

We develop a combinatorial approach to the construction of general smooth compact base surfaces that support elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds. This extends previous analyses that have relied on toric or semi-toric structure. The resulting algorithm is used to construct all classes of such base surfaces $S$ with $h^{1, 1} (S) < 8$ and all base surfaces over which there is an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ with Hodge number $h^{2, 1} (X) \geq 150$. These two sets can be used todescribe all 6D F-theory models that have fewer than seven tensor multiplets or more than 150 neutral scalar fields respectively in their maximally Higgsed phase. Technical challenges to constructing the complete list of base surfaces for all Hodge numbers are discussed.

Tuned and Non-Higgsable U(1)s in F-theory

We study the tuning of U(1) gauge fields in F-theory models on a base of general dimension. We construct a formula that computes the change in Weierstrass moduli when such a U(1) is tuned, based on the Morrison-Park form of a Weierstrass model with an additional rational section. Using this formula, we propose the form of "minimal tuning" on any base, which corresponds to the case where the decrease in the number of Weierstrass moduli is minimal. Applying this result, we discover some universal features of bases with non-Higgsable U(1)s. Mathematically, a generic elliptic fibration over such a base has additional rational sections. Physically, this condition implies the existence of U(1) gauge group in the low-energy supergravity theory after compactification that cannot be Higgsed away. In particular, we show that the elliptic Calabi-Yau manifold over such a base has a small number of complex structure moduli. We also suggest that non-Higgsable U(1)s can never appear on any toric bases. Finally, we construct the first example of a threefold base with non-Higgsable U(1)s.

The F-theory geometry with most flux vacua

Applying the Ashok-Denef-Douglas estimation method to elliptic Calabi-Yau fourfolds suggests that a single elliptic fourfold ${\cal M}_{\rm max}$ gives rise to ${\cal O} (10^{272,000})$ F-theory flux vacua, and that the sum total of the numbers of flux vacua from all other F-theory geometries is suppressed by a relative factor of ${\cal O} (10^{-3000})$. The fourfold ${\cal M}_{\rm max}$ arises from a generic elliptic fibration over a specific toric threefold base $B_{\rm max}$, and gives a geometrically non-Higgsable gauge group of $E_8^9 \times F_4^8 \times (G_2 \times SU(2))^{16}$, of which we expect some factors to be broken by G-flux to smaller groups. It is not possible to tune an $SU(5)$ GUT group on any further divisors in ${\cal M}_{\rm max}$, or even an $SU(2)$ or $SU(3)$, so the standard model gauge group appears to arise in this context only from a broken $E_8$ factor. The results of this paper can either be interpreted as providing a framework for predicting how the standard model arises most naturally in F-theory and the types of dark matter to be found in a typical F-theory compactification, or as a challenge to string theorists to explain why other choices of vacua are not exponentially unlikely compared to F-theory compactifications on ${\cal M}_{\rm max}$.

A Monte Carlo exploration of threefold base geometries for 4d F-theory vacua

We use Monte Carlo methods to explore the set of toric threefold bases that support elliptic Calabi-Yau fourfolds for F-theory compactifications to four dimensions, and study the distribution of geometrically non-Higgsable gauge groups, matter, and quiver structure. We estimate the number of distinct threefold bases in the connected set studied to be $\sim { 10^{48}}$. The distribution of bases peaks around $h^{1, 1}\sim 82$. All bases encountered after "thermalization" have some geometric non-Higgsable structure. We find that the number of non-Higgsable gauge group factors grows roughly linearly in $h^{1,1}$ of the threefold base. Typical bases have $\sim 6$ isolated gauge factors as well as several larger connected clusters of gauge factors with jointly charged matter. Approximately 76% of the bases sampled contain connected two-factor gauge group products of the form SU(3)$\times$SU(2), which may act as the non-Abelian part of the standard model gauge group. SU(3)$\times$SU(2) is the third most common connected two-factor product group, following SU(2)$\times$SU(2) and $G_2\times$SU(2), which arise more frequently.

Generalized Cartan Calculus in general dimension

We develop the generalized Cartan Calculus for the groups $G=$SL$(2,\mathbb{R})\times\mathbb{R}^+$, SL$(5,\mathbb{R})$ and SO(5,5). They are the underlying algebraic structures of $d=9,7,6$ exceptional field theory, respectively. These algebraic identities are needed for the "tensor hierarchy" structure in exceptional field theory. The validity of Poincaré lemmas in this new differential geometry is also discussed. Finally we explore some possible extension of the generalized Cartan calculus beyond the exceptional series.

Tensor Hierarchy and Generalized Cartan Calculus in SL(3)$\times$SL(2) Exceptional Field Theory

We construct exceptional field theory for the duality group SL(3)$\times$SL(2). The theory is defined on a space with 8 `external' coordinates and 6 `internal' coordinates in the $(3,2)$ fundamental representation, leading to a 14-dimensional generalized spacetime. The bosonic theory is uniquely determined by gauge invariance under generalized external and internal diffeomorphisms. The latter invariance can be made manifest by introducing higher form gauge fields and a so-called tensor hierarchy, which we systematically develop to much higher degree than in previous studies. To this end we introduce a novel Cartan-like tensor calculus based on a covariant nil-potent differential, generalizing the exterior derivative of conventional differential geometry. The theory encodes the full $D=11$ or type IIB supergravity, respectively.

Quantum Cloning Machines and the Applications

No-cloning theorem is fundamental for quantum mechanics and for quantum information science that states an unknown quantum state cannot be cloned perfectly. However, we can try to clone a quantum state approximately with the optimal fidelity, or instead, we can try to clone it perfectly with the largest probability. Thus various quantum cloning machines have been designed for different quantum information protocols. Specifically, quantum cloning machines can be designed to analyze the security of quantum key distribution protocols such as BB84 protocol, six-state protocol, B92 protocol and their generalizations. Some well-known quantum cloning machines include universal quantum cloning machine, phase-covariant cloning machine, the asymmetric quantum cloning machine and the probabilistic quantum cloning machine etc. In the past years, much progress has been made in studying quantum cloning machines and their applications and implementations, both theoretically and experimentally. In this review, we will give a complete description of those important developments about quantum cloning and some related topics. On the other hand, this review is self-consistent, and in particular, we try to present some detailed formulations so that further study can be taken based on those results.

D2 Chern-Simons Gravity

We study the theory that contains two spin-2 fields. This theory can be regarded as a simplified version of higher spin gravity in AdS3. It can be formulated either in the first order formulation or in the second order formulation. From the first order formulation we construct the black holes in the theory and study the thermodynamics of this black holes with the help of dual holographic OPE. From the higher spin point of view, this black hole is most naturally regarded as a black hole with a spin-2 hair. In the second order formulation, we obtain an action for the metric and extra spin-2 fields and analyze the corresponding black holes. Even though for some simple cases, the conventional notions, such as the horizon, may help us to read part of the information of the black hole, they break down in generic cases. On the other hand, the action in the second order formulation could be rewritten in the form of a decoupled AdS3 bi-gravity. Moreover, the entropy of the black hole with the spin-2 hair could be reproduced from the AdS3 bi-gravity in the Euclidean path-integral formalism.

Conical Defects, Black Holes and Higher Spin (Super-)Symmetry

We study the (super-)symmetries of classical solutions in the higher spin (super-)gravity in AdS$_3$. We show that the symmetries of the solutions are encoded in the holonomy around the spatial circle. When the spatial holonomies of the solutions are trivial, they preserve maximal symmetries of the theory, and are actually the smooth conical defects. We find all the smooth conical defects in the $sl(N), so(2N+1),sp(2N), so(2N), g_2$, as well as in $sl(N|N-1)$ and $osp(2N+1|2N)$ Chern-Simons gravity theories. In the bosonic higher spin cases, there are one-to-one correspondences between the smooth conical defects and the highest weight representations of Lie group. Furthermore we investigate the higher spin black holes in $osp(3|2)$ and $sl(3|2)$ higher spin (super-)gravity and find that they are only partially symmetric. In general, the black holes break all the supersymmetries, but in some cases they preserve part of the supersymmetries.

Quantum key distribution based on a quantum retrodiction protocol

This paper is withdrawn. We study the quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol based on a quantum retrodiction protocol, namely the so-called mean king problem. The security is analyzed by considering the eavesdropping on both the preparation of the entangled pair and the transmission of the quantum state. This QKD protocol can generate efficiently a bit of raw key in every single run. We find that, for qubit system, it is more secure than the QKD Bennett-Brassard 1984 protocol and the six-state protocol. This QKD protocol works also for higher dimensional system.

Phase Structure of Higher Spin Black Hole

In this paper, we investigate the phase structures of the black holes with one single higher spin hair, focusing specifically on the spin 3 and spin tilde 4 black holes. Based on dimensional analysis and the requirement of having consistent thermodynamics, we derive an universal formula relating the entropy and the conserved charges for arbitrary AdS3 higher spin black holes. Then we use it to study the phase structure of the higher spin black holes. We find that there are six branches of solutions in the spin 3 gravity, eight branches of solutions in the spin tilde 4 gravity and twelve branches of solutions in the G2 gravity. In each case, all branches are related by a simple angle shift in the entropy functions. In the spin 3 case, we reproduce all the results found before. In the spin tilde 4 case, we find that in the low temperature it is at the BTZ branch while in the high temperature it transits to one of two other branches, depending on the signature of the chemical potential, a reflection of charge conjugate asymmetry found before.

Quantum network teleportation for quantum information distribution and concentration

We investigate the schemes of quantum network teleportation for quantum information distribution and concentration which are essential in quantum cloud computation and quantum internet. In those schemes, the cloud can send simultaneously identical unknown quantum states to clients located in different places by a network like teleportation with a prior shared multipartite entangled state resource. The cloud first perform the quantum operation, each client can recover their quantum state locally by using the classical information announced by the cloud about the measurement result. The number of clients can be beyond the number of identical quantum states intentionally being sent, this quantum network teleportation can make sure that the retrieved quantum state is optimal. Furthermore, we present a scheme to realize its reverse process, which concentrates the states from the clients to reconstruct the original state of the cloud. These schemes facilitate the quantum information distribution and concentration in quantum networks in the framework of quantum cloud computation. Potential applications in time synchronization are discussed.

Minimal sets determining universal and phase-covariant quantum cloning

We study the minimal input sets which can determine completely the universal and the phase-covariant quantum cloning machines. We find that the universal quantum cloning machine, which can copy arbitrary input qubit equally well, however can be determined completely by only four input states located at the four vertices of a tetrahedron. The phase-covariant quantum cloning machine, which can copy all qubits located on the equator of the Bloch sphere, can be determined by three equatorial qubits with equal angular distance. These results sharpen further the well-known results that BB84 states and six-states used in quantum cryptography can determine completely the phase-covariant and universal quantum cloning machines. This concludes the study of the power of universal and phase-covariant quantum cloning, i.e., from minimal input sets necessarily to full input sets by definition. This can simplify dramatically the testing of whether the quantum clone machines are successful or not, we only need to check that the minimal input sets can be cloned optimally.
