Coexisting Itinerant and Localized Electrons in Iron-Based Superconductors

The surprising discovery of high-$T_c$ superconductivity in iron-based compounds has prompted an intensive investigation on the role of interaction and magnetism in the these materials. Based on the general features of multi-bands and intermediate coupling strengths, a phenomenological theory of coexisting itinerant and localized electrons has been proposed to describe the low-energy physics in iron-based superconductors. It provides a unified framework to understand magnetic, superconducting, and normal phases, subject to further microscopic justification and experimental verification.

Superfluidity of Bosons in Kagome Lattices with Frustration

In this letter we consider spinless bosons in a Kagome lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping and on-site interaction, and the sign of hopping is inverted by insetting a π flux in each triangle of Kagome lattice so that the lowest single particle band is perfectly flat. We show that in the high density limit, despite of the infinite degeneracy of the single particle ground states, interaction will select out the Bloch state at the K point of Brillouin zone for boson condensation at the lowest temperature. As temperature increases, the single boson superfluid order can be easily destroyed, while an exotic triple-boson paired superfluid order will remain. We establish that this trion superfluid exists in a broad temperature regime until the temperature is increased to the same order of hopping and then the system turns into normal phases. Finally we show that time of flight measurement of momentum distribution and its noise correlation can be used to distinguish these three phases.

Synthetic Topological Degeneracy by Anyon Condensation

Topological degeneracy is the degeneracy of the ground states in a many-body system in the large-system-size limit. Topological degeneracy cannot be lifted by any local perturbation of the Hamiltonian. The topological degeneracies on closed manifolds have been used to discover/define topological order in many-body systems, which contain excitations with fractional statistics. In this paper, we study a new type of topological degeneracy induced by condensing anyons along a line in 2D topological ordered states. Such topological degeneracy can be viewed as carried by each end of the line-defect, which is a generalization of Majorana zero-modes. The topological degeneracy can be used as a quantum memory. The ends of line-defects carry projective non-Abelian statistics, and braiding them allow us to perform fault tolerant quantum computations.

Doping a spin-orbit Mott Insulator: Topological Superconductivity from the Kitaev-Heisenberg Model and possible application to (Na2/Li2)IrO3

We study the effects of doping a Mott insulator on the honeycomb lattice where spins interact via direction dependent Kitaev couplings J_K, and weak antiferromagnetic Heisenberg couplings J. This model is known to have a spin liquid ground state and may potentially be realized in correlated insulators with strong spin orbit coupling. The effect of hole doping is studied within a t-J-J_K model, treated using the SU(2) slave boson formulation, which correctly captures the parent spin liquid. We find superconductor ground states with spin triplet pairing that spontaneously break time reversal symmetry. Interestingly, the pairing is qualitatively different at low and high dopings, and undergoes a first order transition with doping. At high dopings, it is smoothly connected to a paired state of electrons propagating with the underlying free particle dispersion. However, at low dopings the dispersion is strongly influenced by the magnetic exchange, and is entirely different from the free particle band structure. Here the superconductivity is fully gapped and topological, analogous to spin polarized electrons with px+ipy pairing. These results may be relevant to honeycomb lattice iridates such as A2IrO3 (A=Li or Na) on doping.

Projective non-Abelian Statistics of Dislocation Defects in a Z_N Rotor Model

Non-Abelian statistics is a phenomenon of topologically protected non-Abelian Berry phases as we exchange quasiparticle excitations. In this paper, we construct a Z_N rotor model that realizes a self-dual Z_N Abelian gauge theory. We find that lattice dislocation defects in the model produce topologically protected degeneracy. Even though dislocations are not quasiparticle excitations, they resemble non-Abelian anyons with quantum dimension sqrt(N). Exchanging dislocations can produces topologically protected projective non-Abelian Berry phases. The dislocations, as projective non-Abelian anyons can be viewed as a generalization of the Majorana zero modes.

Kitaev-Heisenberg-J2-J3 model for the iridates A2IrO3

A Kitaev-Heisenberg-J2-J3 model is proposed to describe the Mott-insulating layered iridates A2IrO3 (A=Na,Li). The model is a combination of the Kitaev honeycomb model and the Heisenberg model with all three nearest neighbor couplings J1, J2 and J3. A rich phase diagram is obtained at the classical level, including the experimentally suggested zigzag ordered phase; as well as the stripy phase, which extends from the Kitaev-Heisenberg limit to the J1-J2-J3 one. Combining the experimentally observed spin order with the optimal fitting to the uniform magnetic susceptibility data gives an estimate of possible parameter values, which in turn reaffirms the necessity of including both the Kitaev and farther neighbor couplings.

Phase diagram and a possible unified description of intercalated iron selenide superconductors

We propose a theoretical description of the phase diagram and physical properties in A2Fe4Se5-type (A=K, Tl) compounds based on a coexistent local moment and itinerant electron picture. Using neutron scattering and ARPES measurements to fix the general structure of the local moment and itinerant Fermi pockets, we find a superconducting (SC) regime with s-wave pairing at the M pockets and an incipient sign-change s-wave near the Gamma point, which is adjacent to an insulating state at low doping and a charge-density-wave (CDW) state at high doping. The uniform susceptibility and resistivity are found to be consistent with the experiment. The main distinction with iron pnictide superconductors is also discussed.

The spin excitations of the block-antiferromagnetic K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$

We study the spin excitations of the newly discovered block-antiferromagnetic state in K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_2$ using an effective spin Hamiltonian suggested in the literature. Interestingly in addition to the usual Goldstone mode, there exists three other "optical" spin wave branches. These spin excitations are the analog of "optical phonons" in crystals with more than one atom per unit cell. We compute the spin wave corrected ordering moment and the uniform spin susceptibilities.

Magnetic and superconducting instabilities in a hybrid model of itinerant/localized electrons for iron pnictides

We study a unified mechanism for spin-density-wave (SDW) and superconductivity in a minimal model, in which itinerant electrons and local moments coexist as previously proposed for the iron pnictides [EPL, 88, 17010 (2009)]. The phase diagram obtained at the mean field level is in qualitative agreement with the experiment, which shows how the magnetic and superconducting (SC) instabilities are driven by the critial coupling between the itinerant/localized electrons. The spin and charge response functions at the random phase approximation (RPA) level further characterize the dynamical evolution of the system. In particular, the dynamic spin susceptibility displays a Goldstone mode in the SDW phase, which evolves into a gapped resonance-like mode in the superconducting phase. The latter persists all the way into the normal state above Tc, where a strong scattering between the itinerant electrons and local moments is restored, as an essential feature of the model.
