Centauric 1-Jettiness in DIS and Universal Power Corrections

We introduce the \emph{Centauric 1-jettiness}, $τ_1^C$, a generalized event shape for Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) with adjustable beam and jet reference vectors and thus beam and jet regions. We demonstrate that a specific choice of weights allows this observable to exactly reproduce the geometric boundaries of the Centauro jet algorithm in the Breit frame. Within the framework of Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), we derive a factorized cross section in the small-$τ_1^C$ region in terms of known perturbative ingredients. This allows the resummation of large logarithms to N$^3$LL accuracy, which we then match to fixed-order NLO QCD ($\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$) predictions from \texttt{NLOJet++}. We establish that the soft measurement reduces to a rescaled hemisphere measurement, placing Centauric 1-jettiness in the same universality class, for the leading non-perturbative corrections, as DIS thrust and jet mass. As a consequence, the leading non-perturbative shift depends on the same universal first-moment-shift parameter $Ω_1$ and scales exactly as $1/R$ with the jet radius, thanks to the boost invariance of the Centauro algorithm along the photon axis in the Breit frame, a scaling that we test using \textsc{Pythia} simulations. These results open new strategies for determining the strong coupling from DIS event shapes, with $R$ providing a handle to break the degeneracy between $α_s$ and the universal non-perturbative shift parameter $Ω_1$.

Revisiting strong-coupling determinations from $e^+ e^-$ event shapes

We reassess the theoretical uncertainties of strong-coupling determinations from a global fit to the $e^+ e^-$ thrust data, focusing in particular on the scheme dependence associated with the applied renormalon-cancellation prescription and on the choice of scale parameters that are used to estimate higher-order perturbative corrections in all sectors of the calculation.

Effects of Renormalon Scheme and Perturbative Scale Choices on Determinations of the Strong Coupling from $e^+e^-$ Event Shapes

We study the role of renormalon cancellation schemes and perturbative scale choices in extractions of the strong coupling constant $α_s(m_Z)$ and the leading non-perturbative shift parameter $Ω_1$ from resummed predictions of the $e^+e^-$ event shape thrust. We calculate the thrust distribution to N$^{3}$LL$^\prime$ resummed accuracy in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) matched to the fixed-order $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$ prediction, and perform a new high-statistics computation of the $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3)$ matching in EERAD3, although we do not include the latter in our final $α_s$ fits due to some observed systematics that require further investigation. We are primarily interested in testing the phenomenological impact sourced from varying amongst three renormalon cancellation schemes and two sets of perturbative scale profile choices. We then perform a global fit to available data spanning center-of-mass energies between 35-207 GeV in each scenario. Relevant subsets of our results are consistent with prior SCET-based extractions of $α_s(m_Z)$, but we are also led to a number of novel observations. Notably, we find that the combined effect of altering the renormalon cancellation scheme and profile parameters can lead to few-percent-level impacts on the extracted values in the $α_s-Ω_1$ plane, indicating a potentially important systematic theory uncertainty that should be accounted for. We also observe that fits performed over windows dominated by dijet events are typically of a higher quality than those that extend into the far tails of the distributions, possibly motivating future fits focused more heavily in this region. Finally, we discuss how different estimates of the three-loop soft matching coefficient $c_{\tilde{S}}^3$ can also lead to measurable changes in the fitted $\lbrace α_s, Ω_1 \rbrace$ values.

Transverse momentum dependent distributions in dijet and heavy hadron pair production at EIC

We discuss the measurement of gluon transverse momentum distribution (TMD) in dijet and heavy hadron pair (HHP) production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. The factorization of these processes in impact parameter space shows the appearance of a specific new soft factor matrix element on top of angular a complex valued anomalous dimensions. We show in detail how these features can be treated consistently and we discuss a scale prescription for the evolution kernel of the dijet soft function. As a result we obtain phenomenological predictions for unpolarized and angular modulated cross-sections for the electron-ion collider (EIC) using current available information on unpolarized TMD.

Joint thrust and TMD resummation in electron-positron and electron-proton collisions

We present the framework for obtaining precise predictions for the transverse momentum of hadrons with respect to the thrust axis in $e^+e^-$ collisions. This will enable a precise extraction of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) fragmentation functions from a recent measurement by the Belle Collaboration. Our analysis takes into account, for the first time, the nontrivial interplay between the hadron transverse momentum and the cut on the thrust event shape. To this end, we identify three different kinematic regions, derive the corresponding factorization theorems within Soft Collinear Effective Theory, and present all ingredients needed for the joint resummation of the transverse momentum and thrust spectrum at NNLL accuracy. One kinematic region can give rise to non-global logarithms (NGLs), and we describe how to include the leading NGLs. We also discuss alternative measurements in $e^+e^-$ collisions that can be used to access the TMD fragmentation function. Finally, by using crossing symmetry, we obtain a new way to constrain TMD parton distributions, by measuring the displacement of the thrust axis in $ep$ collisions.

Prospects for quarkonium studies at the high-luminosity LHC

Prospects for quarkonium-production studies accessible during the upcoming high-luminosity phases of the CERN Large Hadron Collider operation after 2021 are reviewed. Current experimental and theoretical open issues in the field are assessed together with the potential for future studies in quarkonium-related physics. This will be possible through the exploitation of the huge data samples to be collected in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, both in the collider and fixed-target modes. Such investigations include, among others, those of: (i) J/psi and Upsilon produced in association with other hard particles; (ii) chi(c,b) and eta(c,b) down to small transverse momenta; (iii) the constraints brought in by quarkonia on gluon PDFs, nuclear PDFs, TMDs, GPDs and GTMDs, as well as on the low-x parton dynamics; (iv) the gluon Sivers effect in polarised-nucleon collisions; (v) the properties of the quark-gluon plasma produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and of collective partonic effects in general; and (vi) double and triple parton scatterings.

Energy-energy correlators in Deep Inelastic Scattering

The energy-energy correlator (EEC) is an event shape observable which probes the angular correlations of energy depositions in detectors at high energy collider facilities. It has been investigated extensively in the context of precision QCD. In this work, we introduce a novel definition of EEC adapted to the Breit frame in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). In the back-to-back limit, the observable we propose is sensitive to the universal transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions, and it can be studied within the traditional TMD factorization formalism. We further show that the new observable is insensitive to experimental pseudorapidity cuts, often imposed in the Laboratory frame due to detector acceptance limitations. In this work the singular distributions for the new observable are obtained in soft collinear effective theory up to $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3)$ and are verified by the full QCD calculations up to $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$. The resummation in the singular limit is performed up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. After incorporating non-perturbative effects, we present a comparison of our predictions to PYTHIA 8 simulations.

Revisiting the role of grooming in DIS

We introduce a novel grooming procedure, which is an extension of the modified MassDrop tagging algorithm, tailored to the needs of deep inelastic scattering (DIS). The new algorithm, which grooms the event as a whole, takes advantage of the natural separation of current and target fragmentation in the Breit frame, in order to eliminate radiation in the beam and central rapidity regions. We study the groomed invariant mass in DIS and within soft-collinear effective theory we construct a factorization theorem for the cross-section in the back-to-back limit. In this limit we show that, up to a normalization factor, the cross-section does not depend on the incoming hadronic matrix element and we propose this measurement at HERA and the future electron-ion collider (EIC) as a probe to hadronization, precision QCD, and cold nuclear matter effects. We also give an event based definition of the Winner-Take-All axis and comment on possible applications.

Asymmetric jet clustering in deep-inelastic scattering

We propose a new jet algorithm for deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) that accounts for the forward-backward asymmetry in the Breit frame. The Centauro algorithm is longitudinally invariant and can cluster jets with Born kinematics, which enables novel studies of transverse-momentum-dependent observables. Furthermore, we show that spherically-invariant algorithms in the Breit frame give access to low-energy jets from current fragmentation. We propose novel studies in unpolarized, polarized, and nuclear DIS at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

TMD factorization for dijet and heavy-meson pair in DIS

We study a transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework for the processes of di-jet and heavy meson pair production in deep-inelastic-scattering in an electron-proton collider, considering the measurement of the transverse momentum imbalance of the two hard probes in the Breit frame. For the factorization theorem we employ soft-collinear and boosted-heavy-quark effective field theories. The factorized cross-section for both processes is sensitive to gluon unpolarized and linearly polarized TMD distributions and requires the introduction of a new soft function. We calculate the new soft function here at one loop, regulating rapidity divergences with the $δ$-regulator. In addition, using a factorization consistency relation and a universality argument regarding the heavy-quark jet function, we obtain the anomalous dimension of the new soft function at two loops.

Quarkonium TMD fragmentation functions in NRQCD

We study the transverse-momentum spectrum of quarkonium production from single light-parton fragmentation mechanism. In the case of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, we observe that there are two possible initiating processes, namely photon-gluon fusion and light-quark fragmentation. For the second case we derive the factorization theorem, which involves a new hadronic quantity: the quarkonium transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions in NRQCD. We calculate their matching onto the non-perturbative long distance matrix elements at the lowest order in the strong-coupling constant (${\mathcal O}(α_s^2)$). Focusing on the case of the electron-ion collider, we make a comparative phenomenological study of the two production mechanisms and find the regions of the phase space where one is dominant over the other.

An effective field theory approach to quarkonium at small transverse momentum

In this work we apply effective field theory (EFT) to observables in quarkonium production and decay that are sensitive to soft gluon radiation, in particular measurements that are sensitive to small transverse momentum. Within the EFT framework we study $χ_Q$ decay to light quarks followed by the fragmentation of those quarks to light hadrons. We derive a factorization theorem that involves transverse momentum distribution (TMD) fragmentation functions and new quarkonium TMD shape functions. We derive renormalization group equations, both in rapidity and virtuality, which are used to evolve the different terms in the factorization theorem to resum large logarithms. This theoretical framework will provide a systematic treatment of quarkonium production and decay processes in TMD sensitive measurements.

Probing Transverse-Momentum Distributions With Groomed Jets

We present the transverse momentum spectrum of groomed jets in di-jet events for $e^+e^-$ collisions and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). The jets are groomed using a soft-drop grooming algorithm which helps in mitigating effects of non-global logarithms and underlying event. At the same time, by reducing the final state hadronization effects, it provides a clean access to the non-perturbative part of the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions. In SIDIS experiments we look at the transverse momentum of the groomed jet measured w.r.t. the incoming hadron in the Breit frame. Because the final state hadronization effects are significantly reduced, the SIDIS case allows to probe the TMD parton distribution functions. We discuss the sources of non-perturbative effects in the low transverse momentum region including novel (but small) effects that arise due to grooming. We derive a factorization theorem within SCET and resum any large logarithm in the measured transverse momentum up to NNLL accuracy using the $ζ$-prescription as implemented in the artemide package and provide a comparison with simulations.

An Effective Theory of Quarkonia in QCD Matter

The problem of quarkonium production in heavy ion collisions presents a set of unique theoretical challenges -- from the relevant production mechanism of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ to the relative significance of distinct cold and hot nuclear matter effects in the observed attenuation of quarkonia. Inthese proceedings we summarize recent work on the generalization of non-relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics (NRQCD) to include off-shell gluon (Glauber/Coulomb) interactions in strongly interacting matter. This new effective theory provides for the first time a universal microscopic description of the in-medium interaction of heavy quarkonia, consistently applicable to a range of phases such as cold nuclear matter, dense hadron gas, and quark-gluon plasma. It is an important step forward in understanding the common trends in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus data on quarkonium suppression. We derive explicitly the leading and sub-leading interaction terms in the Lagrangian and show the connection of the leading result to existing phenomenology.

Subtracted Cumulants: Mitigating Large Background in Jet Substructure

We introduce a new approach for jet physics studies using subtracted cumulants of jet substructure observables, which are shown to be insensitive to contributions from soft-particle emissions uncorrelated with the hard process. Therefore subtracted cumulants allow comparisons between theoretical calculations and experimental measurements without the complication of large background contaminations such as underlying and pile-up events in hadron collisions. We test our method using subtracted jet mass cumulants by comparing Monte Carlo simulations to analytic calculations performed using soft-collinear effective theory. We find that, for proton-proton collisions, the method efficiently eliminates contributions from multiparton interactions and pile-up events. We also find within theoretical uncertainty our analytic calculations are in good agreement with the subtracted cumulants calculated by using ATLAS jet mass measurements.

An Effective Theory of Quarkonia in QCD Matter

For heavy quarkonia of moderate energy, we generalize the relevant successful theory, non-relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics (NRQCD), to include interactions in nuclear matter. The new resulting theory, NRQCD with Glauber gluons, provides for the first time a universal microscopic description of the interaction of heavy quarkonia with a strongly interacting medium, consistently applicable to a range of phases, such as cold nuclear matter, dense hadron gas, and quark-gluon plasma. The effective field theory we present in this work is derived from first principles and is an important step forward in understanding the common trends in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus data on quarkonium suppression.

Transverse Momentum Spectra at Threshold for Groomed Heavy Quark Jets

We present the transverse momentum spectrum for a heavy hadron at threshold in a groomed jet initiated by a heavy quark. The cross section is doubly differential in the energy fraction of an identified heavy hadron in the jet and its transverse momentum measured with respect to the groomed (recoil free) jet axis. The grooming is implemented using a soft-drop grooming algorithm and helps us in mitigating the effects of Non-Global logarithms and pile up. For the particular case of a $B$ meson, we identify two distinct regimes of the transverse momentum spectrum and develop an EFT within the formalisms of Soft Collineat Effective Theory (SCET) and Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) for each of these regions. We show how each region can be matched smoothly into the other to provide a prediction for the perturbative transverse momentum spectrum. The EFT also predicts the scaling behavior of the leading non-perturbative power corrections and implements a simple shape function to account for hadronization. We work in the threshold region where the heavy hadron carries most of the energy of the jet since in this regime, we have a very good discriminating power between heavy quark and gluon initiated jets. We observe that the shape of the spectrum is independent of the energy of the jet over a large range of transverse momentum. We propose that this spectrum can be used as a probe of evolution for heavy quark TMD fragmentation function. At the same time, it can be treated as a jet substructure observable for probing Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP).
