Multi-block-Single-probe Variance Reduced Estimator for Coupled Compositional Optimization

Variance reduction techniques such as SPIDER/SARAH/STORM have been extensively studied to improve the convergence rates of stochastic non-convex optimization, which usually maintain and update a sequence of estimators for a single function across iterations. What if we need to track multiple functional mappings across iterations but only with access to stochastic samples of $\mathcal{O}(1)$ functional mappings at each iteration? There is an important application in solving an emerging family of coupled compositional optimization problems in the form of $\sum_{i=1}^m f_i(g_i(\mathbf{w}))$, where $g_i$ is accessible through a stochastic oracle. The key issue is to track and estimate a sequence of $\mathbf g(\mathbf{w})=(g_1(\mathbf{w}), \ldots, g_m(\mathbf{w}))$ across iterations, where $\mathbf g(\mathbf{w})$ has $m$ blocks and it is only allowed to probe $\mathcal{O}(1)$ blocks to attain their stochastic values and Jacobians. To improve the complexity for solving these problems, we propose a novel stochastic method named Multi-block-Single-probe Variance Reduced (MSVR) estimator to track the sequence of $\mathbf g(\mathbf{w})$. It is inspired by STORM but introduces a customized error correction term to alleviate the noise not only in stochastic samples for the selected blocks but also in those blocks that are not sampled. With the help of the MSVR estimator, we develop several algorithms for solving the aforementioned compositional problems with improved complexities across a spectrum of settings with non-convex/convex/strongly convex/Polyak-Łojasiewicz (PL) objectives. Our results improve upon prior ones in several aspects, including the order of sample complexities and dependence on the strong convexity parameter. Empirical studies on multi-task deep AUC maximization demonstrate the better performance of using the new estimator.

Efficiently Hardening SGX Enclaves against Memory Access Pattern Attacks via Dynamic Program Partitioning

Intel SGX is known to be vulnerable to a class of practical attacks exploiting memory access pattern side-channels, notably page-fault attacks and cache timing attacks. A promising hardening scheme is to wrap applications in hardware transactions, enabled by Intel TSX, that return control to the software upon unexpected cache misses and interruptions so that the existing side-channel attacks exploiting these micro-architectural events can be detected and mitigated. However, existing hardening schemes scale only to small-data computation, with a typical working set smaller than one or few times (e.g., $8$ times) of a CPU data cache. This work tackles the data scalability and performance efficiency of security hardening schemes of Intel SGX enclaves against memory-access pattern side channels. The key insight is that the size of TSX transactions in the target computation is critical, both performance- and security-wise. Unlike the existing designs, this work dynamically partitions target computations to enlarge transactions while avoiding aborts, leading to lower performance overhead and improved side-channel security. We materialize the dynamic partitioning scheme and build a C++ library to monitor and model cache utilization at runtime. We further build a data analytical system using the library and implement various external oblivious algorithms. Performance evaluation shows that our work can effectively increase transaction size and reduce the execution time by up to two orders of magnitude compared with the state-of-the-art solutions.

Experiment Research on the Sequence and Mechanism of Gold and Silver Composite Nanocrystal Synthesis

In this experiment, the authors reviewed the principles and methods for the synthesis and characterization of gold-silver nanocrystals and proposed two possible synthesis mechanisms for Gold and Silver Composite Nanocrystals. Gold nanocrystals, silver nanocrystals, and Gold and Silver Composite Nanocrystals were prepared by the "Sodium citrate seedless method"(Turkevich Method). The products were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), ultraviolet-visible light spectroscopy (UV), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Through comparative experiments, synthesis mechanisms behind different synthesis sequences of gold-silver nanocrystals are analyzed. Observed exotic phenomena are discussed.

Continuous Prompt Tuning Based Textual Entailment Model for E-commerce Entity Typing

The explosion of e-commerce has caused the need for processing and analysis of product titles, like entity typing in product titles. However, the rapid activity in e-commerce has led to the rapid emergence of new entities, which is difficult to be solved by general entity typing. Besides, product titles in e-commerce have very different language styles from text data in general domain. In order to handle new entities in product titles and address the special language styles problem of product titles in e-commerce domain, we propose our textual entailment model with continuous prompt tuning based hypotheses and fusion embeddings for e-commerce entity typing. First, we reformulate the entity typing task into a textual entailment problem to handle new entities that are not present during training. Second, we design a model to automatically generate textual entailment hypotheses using a continuous prompt tuning method, which can generate better textual entailment hypotheses without manual design. Third, we utilize the fusion embeddings of BERT embedding and CharacterBERT embedding with a two-layer MLP classifier to solve the problem that the language styles of product titles in e-commerce are different from that of general domain. To analyze the effect of each contribution, we compare the performance of entity typing and textual entailment model, and conduct ablation studies on continuous prompt tuning and fusion embeddings. We also evaluate the impact of different prompt template initialization for the continuous prompt tuning. We show our proposed model improves the average F1 score by around 2% compared to the baseline BERT entity typing model.

The Luminosity Function of Tidal Disruption Flares for the ZTF-I Survey

The high-cadence survey of Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) has completely dominated the discovery of tidal disruption events (TDEs) in the past few years and resulted in the largest sample of TDEs with optical/UV light curves well-sampled around their peaks, providing us an excellent opportunity to construct a peak luminosity function (LF) of tidal disruption flares (TDFs). The new construction is necessary particularly considering that the most updated LF reported in literature has been inferred from only 13 sources from 5 different surveys. Here we present the optical and blackbody LFs calculated by 33 TDFs discovered in the ZTF-I survey. The optical LF can be described by both a power-law profile $dN/dL_g\propto L_g^{-2.3\pm0.2}$, and a Schechter-like function. The blackbody LF can be described by a power-law profile $dN/dL_{\rm bb}\propto L_{\rm bb}^{-2.2\pm0.2}$, shallower than the LF made of previous van Velzen (2018) sample. A possible low-luminosity turnover in the optical LF supports an Eddington-limited emission scenario. The drop of volumetric rate at high luminosity suggests a rate suppression due to direct captures of the black hole. The total volumetric rate is one order of magnitude lower than the previous estimation, which is probably not simply caused by the high fraction post-peak sources (7/13) in the previous sample. Instead, the normalization step during the previous LF construction to reconcile various surveys might adversely amplify the influence of serendipitous discoveries. Therefore, TDFs selected from ongoing and upcoming uniform surveys like ZTF, Vera Rubin Observatory (VRO) and Wide-Field Survey Telescope (WFST) should yield more accurate LFs.

Optimal Algorithms for Stochastic Multi-Level Compositional Optimization

In this paper, we investigate the problem of stochastic multi-level compositional optimization, where the objective function is a composition of multiple smooth but possibly non-convex functions. Existing methods for solving this problem either suffer from sub-optimal sample complexities or need a huge batch size. To address these limitations, we propose a Stochastic Multi-level Variance Reduction method (SMVR), which achieves the optimal sample complexity of $\mathcal{O}\left(1 / ε^{3}\right)$ to find an $ε$-stationary point for non-convex objectives. Furthermore, when the objective function satisfies the convexity or Polyak-Łojasiewicz (PL) condition, we propose a stage-wise variant of SMVR and improve the sample complexity to $\mathcal{O}\left(1 / ε^{2}\right)$ for convex functions or $\mathcal{O}\left(1 /\left(με\right)\right)$ for non-convex functions satisfying the $μ$-PL condition. The latter result implies the same complexity for $μ$-strongly convex functions. To make use of adaptive learning rates, we also develop Adaptive SMVR, which achieves the same complexities but converges faster in practice. All our complexities match the lower bounds not only in terms of $ε$ but also in terms of $μ$ (for PL or strongly convex functions), without using a large batch size in each iteration.

A Transformer-based Network for Deformable Medical Image Registration

Deformable medical image registration plays an important role in clinical diagnosis and treatment. Recently, the deep learning (DL) based image registration methods have been widely investigated and showed excellent performance in computational speed. However, these methods cannot provide enough registration accuracy because of insufficient ability in representing both the global and local features of the moving and fixed images. To address this issue, this paper has proposed the transformer based image registration method. This method uses the distinctive transformer to extract the global and local image features for generating the deformation fields, based on which the registered image is produced in an unsupervised way. Our method can improve the registration accuracy effectively by means of self-attention mechanism and bi-level information flow. Experimental results on such brain MR image datasets as LPBA40 and OASIS-1 demonstrate that compared with several traditional and DL based registration methods, our method provides higher registration accuracy in terms of dice values.

Enabling Cost-Effective Blockchain Applications via Workload-Adaptive Transaction Execution

As transaction fees skyrocket today, blockchains become increasingly expensive, hurting their adoption in broader applications. This work tackles the saving of transaction fees for economic blockchain applications. The key insight is that other than the existing "default" mode to execute application logic fully on-chain, i.e., in smart contracts, and in fine granularity, i.e., user request per transaction, there are alternative execution modes with advantages in cost-effectiveness. On Ethereum, we propose a holistic middleware platform supporting flexible and secure transaction executions, including off-chain states and batching of user requests. Furthermore, we propose control-plane schemes to adapt the execution mode to the current workload for optimal runtime cost. We present a case study on the institutional accounts (e.g., coinbase.com) intensively sending Ether on Ethereum blockchains. By collecting real-life transactions, we construct workload benchmarks and show that our work saves 18% ~ 47% per invocation than the default baseline while introducing 1.81 ~ 16.59 blocks delay.

On the Origin of the Strong Optical Variability of Emission-line Galaxies

Emission-line galaxies (ELGs) are crucial in understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies, while little is known about their variability. Here we report the study on the optical variability of a sample of ELGs selected in the COSMOS field, which has narrow-band observations in two epochs separated by $\gtrsim$ 12 years. This sample was observed with Suprime-Cam (SC) and Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) on the $Subaru$ telescope in NB816 and $i'/i$ bands, respectively. After carefully removing the wing effect of a narrow-band filter, we check the optical variability in a sample of 181 spectroscopically confirmed ELGs. We find that 0 (0/68) Ha emitters, 11.9% (5/42) [OIII] emitters, and 0 (0/71) [OII] emitters show significant variability ($|Δm_{NB}| \geq 3\,σ_{Δm_{NB,AGN}} = 0.20\, mag$) in the two-epoch narrow-band observations. We investigate the presence of active galactic nucleus (AGN) in this variable ELG (var-ELG) sample with three methods, including X-ray luminosity, mid-infrared activity, and radio-excess. We find zero bright AGN in this var-ELG sample, but cannot rule out the contribution from faint AGN. We find that SNe could also dominate the variability of the var-ELG sample. The merger morphology shown in the HST/F814W images of all the var-ELG sample is in agreement with the enhancement of star formation, i.e., the SNe activity.

Scaling of Berry-curvature monopole dominated large linear positive magnetoresistance

The linear positive magnetoresistance (LPMR) is a widely observed phenomenon in topological materials, which is promising for potential applications on topological spintronics. However, its mechanism remains ambiguous yet and the effect is thus uncontrollable. Here, we report a quantitative scaling model that correlates the LPMR with the Berry curvature, based on a ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal CoS2 that bears the largest LPMR of over 500% at 2 Kelvin and 9 Tesla, among known magnetic topological semimetals. In this system, masses of Weyl nodes existing near the Fermi level, revealed by theoretical calculations, serve as Berry-curvature monopoles and low-effective-mass carriers. Based on the Weyl picture, we propose a relation \[\text{MR}=\frac{e}{\hbar }B{{Ω}_{\text{F}}}\], with B being the applied magnetic field and \[{{Ω}_{\text{F}}}\] the average Berry curvature near the Fermi surface, and further introduce temperature factor to both MR/B slope (MR per unit field) and anomalous Hall conductivity, which establishes the connection between the model and experimental measurements. A clear picture of the linearly slowing down of carriers, i.e., the LPMR effect, is demonstrated under the cooperation of the k-space Berry curvature and real-space magnetic field. Our study not only provides an experimental evidence of Berry curvature induced LPMR for the first time, but also promotes the common understanding and functional designing of the large Berry-curvature MR in topological Dirac/Weyl systems for magnetic sensing or information storage.

Discovery of ATLAS17jrp as an Optical, X-ray and Infrared Bright TDE in a Star-forming Galaxy

We hereby report the discovery of ATLAS17jrp as an extraordinary TDE in star-forming galaxy SDSSJ162034.99+240726.5 in our recent sample of mid-infrared outbursts in nearby galaxies. Its optical/UV light curves rise to a peak luminosity $\sim1.06\times10^{44}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$ in about a month and then decay as $\rm t^{-5/3}$ with a roughly constant temperature around 19000~K, and the optical spectra show a blue continuum and very broad Balmer lines with FWHM$\sim$15000 km/s which gradually narrowed to 1400 km/s within 4 years, all agreeing well with other optical TDEs. A delayed and rapidly rising X-ray flare with a peak luminosity $\rm \sim 1.27\times10^{43}\,erg\,s^{-1}$ was detected at $\rm \sim$ 170 days after the optical peak. The high MIR luminosity of ATLAS17jrp ($\sim2\times10^{43} \rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$) has revealed a distinctive dusty environment with covering factor as high as $\sim0.2$, that is comparable with that of torus in active galactic nuclei but at least one order of magnitude higher than normal optical TDEs. Therefore, ATLAS17jrp turns out to be one of the rare unambiguous TDE found in star-forming galaxies and its high dust covering factor implies that the dust extinction could play an important role in the absence of optical TDEs in star-forming galaxies.

Aper: Evolution-Aware Runtime Permission Misuse Detection for Android Apps

The Android platform introduces the runtime permission model in version 6.0. The new model greatly improves data privacy and user experience, but brings new challenges for app developers. First, it allows users to freely revoke granted permissions. Hence, developers cannot assume that the permissions granted to an app would keep being granted. Instead, they should make their apps carefully check the permission status before invoking dangerous APIs. Second, the permission specification keeps evolving, bringing new types of compatibility issues into the ecosystem. To understand the impact of the challenges, we conducted an empirical study on 13,352 popular Google Play apps. We found that 86.0% apps used dangerous APIs asynchronously after permission management and 61.2% apps used evolving dangerous APIs. If an app does not properly handle permission revocations or platform differences, unexpected runtime issues may happen and even cause app crashes. We call such Android Runtime Permission issues as ARP bugs. Unfortunately, existing runtime permission issue detection tools cannot effectively deal with the ARP bugs induced by asynchronous permission management and permission specification evolution. To fill the gap, we designed a static analyzer, Aper, that performs reaching definition and dominator analysis on Android apps to detect the two types of ARP bugs. To compare Aper with existing tools, we built a benchmark, ARPfix, from 60 real ARP bugs. Our experiment results show that Aper significantly outperforms two academic tools, ARPDroid and RevDroid, and an industrial tool, Lint, on ARPfix, with an average improvement of 46.3% on F1-score. In addition, Aper successfully found 34 ARP bugs in 214 opensource Android apps, most of which can result in abnormal app behaviors (such as app crashes) according to our manual validation.

Tick-Tock: The Imminent Merger of a Supermassive Black Hole Binary

Supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHs) are a fascinating byproduct of galaxy mergers in the hierarchical universe. In the last stage of their orbital evolution, gravitational wave radiation drives the binary inspiral and produces the loudest siren awaiting to be detected by gravitational wave observatories. Periodically varying emission from active galactic nuclei has been proposed as a powerful approach to probe such systems, although none of the identified candidates are close to their final coalescence such that the observed periods stay constant in time. In this work, we report on the first system with rapid decaying periods revealed by its optical and X-ray light curves, which has decreased from about one year to one month in three years. Together with its optical hydrogen line spectroscopy, we propose that the system is an uneven mass-ratio, highly eccentric SMBH binary which will merge within three years, as predicted by the trajectory evolution model. If the interpretation is true, coordinated, multi-band electromagnetic campaign should be planned for this first binary SMBH merger event observed in human history, together with possible neutrino measurements. Gravitational wave memory from this event may also be detectable by Pulsar Timing Array with additional five-to-ten year observation.

Cohomologies and deformations of pre-Lie-morphism triples

A (pre-)Lie-morphism triple consists of two (pre-)Lie algebras and a (pre-)Lie algebra homomorphism between them. We give chomologies of pre-Lie-morphism triples. As an application, we study the infinitesimal deformations of pre-Lie-morphism triples. Finally, we show that the cohomology of the pre-Lie-morphism triple can be deduced from a new cohomology of the Lie-morphism triple.

Mid-InfraRed Outbursts in Nearby Galaxies (MIRONG). II. Optical Spectroscopic Follow-up

Infrared echo has proven to be an effective means to discover transient accretion events of supermassive black holes (SMBHs), such as tidal disruption events (TDEs) and changing-look active galactic nuclei (AGNs), in dusty circumnuclear environments. To explore the dusty populations of SMBH transient events, we have constructed a large sample of Mid-infrared Outbursts in Nearby Galaxies (MIRONG) and performed multiwavelength observations. Here we present the results of multiepoch spectroscopic follow-up observations of a subsample of 54 objects spanning a time scale of 4 yr. Emission-line variability was detected in 22 of them with either emergence or enhancement of broad Balmer emission lines in comparison with pre-outburst spectra. Coronal lines, HeIIλ4686 and Bowen line NIIIλ4640 appeared in the spectra of nine, seven and two sources, respectively. These results suggest that MIRONG is a mixed bag of different transient sources. We have tentatively classified them into different subclass according to their spectral evolution and light curves. Two sources have been in a steady high broad Hα flux up to the latest observation and might be turn-on AGNs. Broad lines faded out in the remaining sources, indicating a transient ionizing source ignited by TDE or sporadic gas accretion. Thirty-one sources do not show noticeable spectral change with respect to their pre-outburst spectra. They have a statistically redder MIR color and lower MIR luminosity of the outbursts, which are consistent with heavily obscured events.

TopoShot: Uncovering Ethereum's Network Topology Leveraging Replacement Transactions

Ethereum relies on a peer-to-peer overlay network to propagate information. The knowledge of Ethereum network topology holds the key to understanding Ethereum's security, availability, and user anonymity. From a measurement perspective, an Ethereum network's topology is routing-table information hidden inside individual Ethereum nodes, measuring which poses challenges and remains an open research problem in the existing literature. This paper presents TopoShot, a new method uniquely repurposing Ethereum's transaction replacement/eviction policies for topology measurement. TopoShot can be configured to support Geth, Parity, and other major Ethereum clients. As validated on local nodes, TopoShot achieves 100% measurement precision and high recall 88% - 97%. To efficiently measure the large Ethereum networks in the wild, we propose a non-trivial schedule to run pair-wise measurements in parallel. To enable ethical measurement on Ethereum mainnet, we propose workload-adaptive configurations of TopoShot to minimize the service interruption to target nodes/network. We systematically measure a variety of Ethereum networks and obtain new knowledge including the full-network topology in major testnets (Ropsten, Rinkeby and Goerli) and critical sub-network topology in the mainnet. The results on testnets show interesting graph-theoretic properties, such as all testnets exhibit graph modularity significantly lower than random graphs, implying resilience to network partitions. The mainnet results show biased neighbor selection strategies adopted by critical Ethereum services such as mining pools and transaction relays, implying a degree of centralization in real Ethereum networks.

iBatch: Saving Ethereum Fees via Secure and Cost-Effective Batching of Smart-Contract Invocations

This paper presents iBatch, a middleware system running on top of an operational Ethereum network to enable secure batching of smart-contract invocations against an untrusted relay server off-chain. iBatch does so at a low overhead by validating the server's batched invocations in smart contracts without additional states. The iBatch mechanism supports a variety of policies, ranging from conservative to aggressive batching, and can be configured adaptively to the current workloads. iBatch automatically rewrites smart contracts to integrate with legacy applications and support large-scale deployment. For cost evaluation, we develop a platform with fast and cost-accurate transaction replaying, build real transaction benchmarks on popular Ethereum applications, and build a functional prototype of iBatch on Ethereum. The evaluation results show that iBatch saves 14.6%-59.1% Gas cost per invocation with a moderate 2-minute delay and 19.06%-31.52% Ether cost per invocation with a delay of 0.26-1.66 blocks.

Robust End-to-End Offline Chinese Handwriting Text Page Spotter with Text Kernel

Offline Chinese handwriting text recognition is a long-standing research topic in the field of pattern recognition. In previous studies, text detection and recognition are separated, which leads to the fact that text recognition is highly dependent on the detection results. In this paper, we propose a robust end-to-end Chinese text page spotter framework. It unifies text detection and text recognition with text kernel that integrates global text feature information to optimize the recognition from multiple scales, which reduces the dependence of detection and improves the robustness of the system. Our method achieves state-of-the-art results on the CASIA-HWDB2.0-2.2 dataset and ICDAR-2013 competition dataset. Without any language model, the correct rates are 99.12% and 94.27% for line-level recognition, and 99.03% and 94.20% for page-level recognition, respectively.
