Dihedral twist liquid models from emergent Majorana fermions

We present a family of electron-based coupled-wire models of bosonic orbifold topological phases, referred to as twist liquids, in two spatial dimensions. All local fermion degrees of freedom are gapped and removed from the topological order by many-body interactions. Bosonic chiral spin liquids and anyonic superconductors are constructed on an array of interacting wires, each supports emergent massless Majorana fermions that are non-local (fractional) and constitute the $SO(N)$ Kac-Moody Wess-Zumino-Witten algebra at level 1. We focus on the dihedral $D_k$ symmetry of $SO(2n)_1$, and its promotion to a gauge symmetry by manipulating the locality of fermion pairs. Gauging the symmetry (sub)group generates the $\mathcal{C}/G$ twist liquids, where $G=\mathbb{Z}_2$ for $\mathcal{C}=U(1)_l$, $SU(n)_1$, and $G=\mathbb{Z}_2$, $\mathbb{Z}_k$, $D_k$ for $\mathcal{C}=SO(2n)_1$. We construct exactly solvable models for all of these topological states. We prove the presence of a bulk excitation energy gap and demonstrate the appearance of edge orbifold conformal field theories corresponding to the twist liquid topological orders. We analyze the statistical properties of the anyon excitations, including the non-Abelian metaplectic anyons and a new class of quasiparticles referred to as Ising-fluxons. We show an eight-fold periodic gauging pattern in $SO(2n)_1/G$ by identifying the non-chiral components of the twist liquids with discrete gauge theories.

Integrability of the $ν=4/3$ fractional quantum Hall edge states

We investigate the homogeneous chiral edge theory of the filling $ν=4/3$ fractional quantum Hall state, which is parameterized by a Luttinger liquid velocity matrix and an electron tunneling amplitude (ignoring irrelevant terms). We identify two solvable cases: one case where the theory gives two free chiral boson modes, and the other case where the theory yields one free charge $\frac{2e}{\sqrt{3}}$ chiral fermion and two free chiral Bogoliubov (Majorana) fermions. For generic parameters, the energy spectrum from our exact diagonalization shows Poisson level spacing statistics (LSS) in each conserved charge and momentum sector, indicating the existence of hidden conserved quantities and the possibility that the generic edge theory of the $ν=4/3$ fractional quantum Hall state is integrable. We further show that a global symmetry preserving irrelevant nonlinear kinetic term will lead to the transition of LSS from Poisson to Wigner-Dyson at high energies. This further supports the possibility that the model without irrelevant terms is integrable.

Chiral Sachdev-Ye model: Integrability and chaos of anyons in 1+1d

We construct and study a chiral Sachdev-Ye (SY) model consisting of $N$ chiral SU$(M)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) models with current-current interactions among each other, which generalizes the 0+1d quantum chaotic SY spin model into 1+1d chiral system with anyon excitations. Each WZW model hosts Abelian anyons as charge excitations, and may arise as the chiral edge theory of 2+1d gapped topological phases. We solve the chiral SY model in two limits which show distinct quantum dynamics. The first limit is the case with uniform interactions at any integers $N$ and $M$, which is integrable and decomposes into a chiral SU$(M)_N$ WZW model and its coset with different "speed of light". When $N=M=2$, the model maps to a free Majorana fermion model. The second limit is the large $N$ and $M$ limit with random interactions, which is solvable to the leading $\frac{1}{NM}$ order, and exhibits many-body quantum chaos in the out-of-time-ordered correlation of anyons. As the interaction strength approaches the upper limit preserving the chirality, the leading velocity-dependent Lyapunov exponent of the model saturates the maximal chaos bound $2π/β$ at temperature $β^{-1}$.

Accelerating 3D MULTIPLEX MRI Reconstruction with Deep Learning

Multi-contrast MRI images provide complementary contrast information about the characteristics of anatomical structures and are commonly used in clinical practice. Recently, a multi-flip-angle (FA) and multi-echo GRE method (MULTIPLEX MRI) has been developed to simultaneously acquire multiple parametric images with just one single scan. However, it poses two challenges for MULTIPLEX to be used in the 3D high-resolution setting: a relatively long scan time and the huge amount of 3D multi-contrast data for reconstruction. Currently, no DL based method has been proposed for 3D MULTIPLEX data reconstruction. We propose a deep learning framework for undersampled 3D MRI data reconstruction and apply it to MULTIPLEX MRI. The proposed deep learning method shows good performance in image quality and reconstruction time.

Exciton band topology in spontaneous quantum anomalous Hall insulators: applications to twisted bilayer graphene

We uncover topological features of neutral particle-hole pair excitations of correlated quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators whose approximately flat conduction and valence bands have equal and opposite non-zero Chern number. Using an exactly solvable model we show that the underlying band topology affects both the center-of-mass and relative motion of particle-hole bound states. This leads to the formation of topological exciton bands whose features are robust to nonuniformity of both the dispersion and the Berry curvature. We apply these ideas to recently-reported broken-symmetry spontaneous QAH insulators in substrate aligned magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene.

Stability of highly-twisted Skyrmions from contact topology

We describe a topological protection mechanism for highly-twisted two-dimensional Skyrmions in systems with Dyloshinskii-Moriya (DM) coupling, where non-zero DM energy density (dubbed "twisting energy density") acts as a kind of band gap in real space, yielding an N invariant for highly twisted Skyrmions. We prove our result through the application of contact topology by extending our system along a fictitious third dimension, and further establish the structural stability of highly-twisted Skyrmions under arbitrary chirality-preserving distortions. Our results apply for all two-dimensional systems hosting Skyrmion excitations including spin-orbit coupled systems exhibiting quantum Hall ferromagnetism.

Galois Symmetry Induced by Hecke Relations in Rational Conformal Field Theory and Associated Modular Tensor Categories

Hecke operators relate characters of rational conformal field theories (RCFTs) with different central charges, and extend the previously studied Galois symmetry of modular representations and fusion algebras. We show that the conductor $N$ of a RCFT and the quadratic residues mod $N$ play an important role in the computation and classification of Galois permutations. We establish a field correspondence in different theories through the picture of effective central charge, which combines Galois inner automorphisms and the structure of simple currents. We then make a first attempt to extend Hecke operators to the full data of modular tensor categories. The Galois symmetry encountered in the modular data appears in the fusion and the braiding matrices as well, and yields isomorphic structures in theories related by Hecke operators.

Excitonic fractional quantum Hall hierarchy in Moiré heterostructures

We consider fractional quantum Hall states in systems where two flat Chern number $C=\pm 1$ bands are labeled by an approximately conserved 'valley' index and interchanged by time reversal symmetry. At filling factor $ν=1$ this setting admits an unusual hierarchy of correlated phases of excitons, neutral particle-hole pair excitations of a fully valley-polarized `orbital ferromagnet' parent state where all electrons occupy a single valley. Excitons experience an effective magnetic field due to the Chern numbers of the underlying bands. This obstructs their condensation in favor of a variety of crystalline orders and gapped and gapless liquid states. All these have the same quantized charge Hall response and are electrically incompressible, but differ in their edge structure, orbital magnetization, and hence valley and thermal responses. We explore the relevance of this scenario for Moiré heterostructures of bilayer graphene on a hexagonal boron nitride substrate.

Coupled Wire Model of $Z_2 \times Z_2$ Orbifold Quantum Hall States

We construct a coupled wire model for a sequence of non-Abelian quantum Hall states occurring at filling factors $ν=2/(2M+q)$ with integers $M$ and even(odd) integers $q$ for fermionic(bosonic) states. They are termed $Z_2 \times Z_2$ orbifold states, which have a topological order with a neutral sector described by the $c=1$ orbifold conformal field theory (CFT) at radius $R_{\rm orbifold}=\sqrt{p/2}$ with even integers $p$. When $p=2$, the state can be viewed as two decoupled layers of Moore-Read (MR) state, whose neutral sector is described by the Ising $\times$ Ising CFT and contains a $Z_2 \times Z_2$ fusion subalgebra. We demonstrate that orbifold states with $p>2$, also containing a $Z_2 \times Z_2$ fusion algebra, can be obtained by coupling together an array of MR $\times$ MR wires through local interactions. The corresponding charge spectrum of quasiparticles is also examined. The orbifold states constructed here are complementary to the $Z_4$ orbifold states, whose neutral edge theory is described by orbifold CFT with odd integer $p$ and contains a $Z_4$ fusion algebra.

Higher angular momentum band inversions in two dimensions

We study a special class of topological phase transitions in two dimensions described by the inversion of bands with relative angular momentum higher than 1. A band inversion of this kind, which is protected by rotation symmetry, separates the trivial insulator from a Chern insulating phase with higher Chern number, and thus generalizes the quantum Hall transition described by a Dirac fermion. Higher angular momentum band inversions are of special interest, as the non-vanishing density of states at the transition can give rise to interesting many-body effects. Here we introduce a series of minimal lattice models which realize higher angular momentum band inversions. We then consider the effect of interactions, focusing on the possibility of electron-hole exciton condensation, which breaks rotational symmetry. An analysis of the excitonic insulator mean field theory further reveals that the ground state of the Chern insulating phase with higher Chern number has the structure of a multicomponent integer quantum Hall state. We conclude by generalizing the notion of higher angular momentum band inversions to the class time-reversal invariant systems, following the scheme of Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang (BHZ). Such band inversions can be viewed as transitions to a topological insulator protected by rotation and inversion symmetry, and provide a promising venue for realizing correlated topological phases such as fractional topological insulators.

Fractional Excitonic Insulator

We argue that a correlated fluid of electrons and holes can exhibit a fractional quantum Hall effect at zero magnetic field analogous to the Laughlin state at filling $1/m$. We introduce a variant of the Laughlin wavefunction for electrons and holes and show that for $m=1$ it is the exact ground state of a free fermion model that describes $p_x + i p_y$ excitonic pairing. For $m>1$ we develop a simple composite fermion mean field theory, and we present evidence that our wavefunction correctly describes this phase. We derive an interacting Hamiltonian for which our wavefunction is the exact ground state, and we present physical arguments that the $m=3$ state can be realized in a system in which energy bands with angular momentum that differ by $3$ cross at the Fermi energy. This leads to a gapless state with $(p_x + i p_y)^3$ excitonic pairing, which we argue is conducive to forming the fractional excitonic insulator in the presence of interactions. Prospects for numerics on model systems and band structure engineering to realize this phase in real materials are discussed.

Aspects of Defect Topology in Smectic Liquid Crystals

We study the topology of smectic defects in two and three dimensions. We give a topological classification of smectic point defects and disclination lines in three dimensions. In addition we describe the combination rules for smectic point defects in two and three dimensions, showing how the broken translational symmetry of the smectic confers a path dependence on the result of defect addition.

Developing a Temporal Bibliographic Data Set for Entity Resolution

Entity resolution is the process of identifying groups of records within or across data sets where each group represents a real-world entity. Novel techniques that consider temporal features to improve the quality of entity resolution have recently attracted significant attention. However, there are currently no large data sets available that contain both temporal information as well as ground truth information to evaluate the quality of temporal entity resolution approaches. In this paper, we describe the preparation of a temporal data set based on author profiles extracted from the Digital Bibliography and Library Project (DBLP). We completed missing links between publications and author profiles in the DBLP data set using the DBLP public API. We then used the Microsoft Academic Graph (MAG) to link temporal affiliation information for DBLP authors. We selected around 80K (1%) of author profiles that cover 2 million (50%) publications using information in DBLP such as alternative author names and personal web profile to improve the reliability of the resulting ground truth, while at the same time keeping the data set challenging for temporal entity resolution research.

Fibonacci Topological Superconductor

We introduce a model of interacting Majorana fermions that describes a superconducting phase with a topological order characterized by the Fibonacci topological field theory. Our theory, which is based on a $SO(7)_1/(G_2)_1$ coset factorization, leads to a solvable one dimensional model that is extended to two dimensions using a network construction. In addition to providing a description of the Fibonacci phase without parafermions, our theory predicts a closely related "anti-Fibonacci" phase, whose topological order is characterized by the tricritical Ising model. We show that Majorana fermions can split into a pair of Fibonacci anyons, and propose an interferometer that generalizes the $Z_2$ Majorana interferometer and directly probes the Fibonacci non-Abelian statistics.

Universal Symmetry-Protected Resonances in a Spinful Luttinger Liquid

We study the problem of resonant tunneling through a quantum dot in a spinful Luttinger liquid. For a range of repulsive interactions, we find that for symmetric barriers there exist resonances with a universal peak conductance $2g^* e^2/h$ that are controlled by a non-trivial intermediate fixed point. This fixed point is also a quantum critical point separating symmetry-protected topological phases. By tuning the system through resonance, all SPT phases can be accessed. For a particular interaction strength with Luttinger parameters $g_ρ=1/3$ and $g_σ=1$, we show that the problem is equivalent to a two channel $SU(3)$ Kondo problem($SU(3)_2$ CFT). At the Toulouse limit, both problems can be mapped to a quantum Brownian motion model on a Kagome lattice, which in turn is related to the quantum Brownian motion on a honeycomb lattice and the three-channel $SU(2)$ Kondo problem($SU(2)_3$ CFT). "Level-rank duality" in the quantum Brownian motion model relating $SU(2)_k$ CFT to $SU(k)_2$ CFT is also explored. Utilizing the boundary conformal field theory, the on-resonance conductance of our resonant tunneling problem is calculated as well as the scaling dimension of the leading relevant operator. This allows us to compute the scaling behavior of the resonance line-shape as a function of temperature.
