The Geography of Research: The Trade-Off Between Knowledge Production and Access

Research activity generates highly localized positive spillovers, yet in the U.S. it has become increasingly spatially misaligned with population and economic activity as people moved away from legacy cities where major research institutions remain anchored. Reallocating researchers toward population centers could broaden local access to knowledge but may reduce knowledge production if legacy institutions or large research clusters raise researcher output. The spatial reallocation of researchers therefore entails a trade-off between gains in knowledge access and losses in knowledge production. To quantify the knowledge production loss from reallocation, we use bibliographic data to separate individual effects from location effects and show that location effects account for substantial differences in research output across locations. Our instrumental-variables estimates provide robust evidence of own-institution agglomeration effects but weaker evidence of external-cluster effects. We then incorporate these estimates into counterfactual reallocations and show that marginally reallocating researchers toward large metropolitan areas with relatively little research activity can plausibly raise aggregate output because the associated knowledge production losses are modest and can be offset by small access gains.

Multi-Granularity Reasoning for Image Quality Assessment via Attribute-Aware Reinforcement Learning to Rank

Recent advances in reasoning-induced image quality assessment (IQA) have demonstrated the power of reinforcement learning to rank (RL2R) for training vision-language models (VLMs) to assess perceptual quality. However, existing approaches operate at a single granularity, predicting only an overall quality score, while overlooking the multi-dimensional nature of human quality perception, which encompasses attributes such as sharpness, color fidelity, noise level, and compositional aesthetics. In this paper, we propose MG-IQA (Multi-Granularity IQA), a multi-granularity reasoning framework that extends RL2R to jointly assess overall image quality and fine-grained quality attributes within a single inference pass. Our approach introduces three key innovations: (1) an attribute-aware prompting strategy that elicits structured multi-attribute reasoning from VLMs; (2) a multi-dimensional Thurstone reward model that computes attribute-specific fidelity rewards for group relative policy optimization; and (3) a cross-domain alignment mechanism that enables stable joint training across synthetic distortion, authentic distortion, and AI-generated image datasets without perceptual scale re-alignment. Extensive experiments on eight IQA benchmarks demonstrate that MG-IQA consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both overall quality prediction (average SRCC improvement of 2.1\%) and attribute-level assessment, while generating interpretable, human-aligned quality descriptions.

DeCoT: Decomposing Complex Instructions for Enhanced Text-to-Image Generation with Large Language Models

Despite remarkable advancements, current Text-to-Image (T2I) models struggle with complex, long-form textual instructions, frequently failing to accurately render intricate details, spatial relationships, or specific constraints. This limitation is highlighted by benchmarks such as LongBench-T2I, which reveal deficiencies in handling composition, specific text, and fine textures. To address this, we propose DeCoT (Decomposition-CoT), a novel framework that leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) to significantly enhance T2I models' understanding and execution of complex instructions. DeCoT operates in two core stages: first, Complex Instruction Decomposition and Semantic Enhancement, where an LLM breaks down raw instructions into structured, actionable semantic units and clarifies ambiguities; second, Multi-Stage Prompt Integration and Adaptive Generation, which transforms these units into a hierarchical or optimized single prompt tailored for existing T2I models. Extensive experiments on the LongBench-T2I dataset demonstrate that DeCoT consistently and substantially improves the performance of leading T2I models across all evaluated dimensions, particularly in challenging aspects like "Text" and "Composition". Quantitative results, validated by multiple MLLM evaluators (Gemini-2.0-Flash and InternVL3-78B), show that DeCoT, when integrated with Infinity-8B, achieves an average score of 3.52, outperforming the baseline Infinity-8B (3.44). Ablation studies confirm the critical contribution of each DeCoT component and the importance of sophisticated LLM prompting. Furthermore, human evaluations corroborate these findings, indicating superior perceptual quality and instruction fidelity. DeCoT effectively bridges the gap between high-level user intent and T2I model requirements, leading to more faithful and accurate image generation.

Room-temperature high-average-power strong-field terahertz source based on industrial high-repetition-rate femtosecond laser

Free-space strong-field terahertz (THz) pulses, generated via optical rectification of femtosecond lasers in nonlinear crystals, are pivotal in various applications. However, conventional Ti:sapphire lasers struggle to produce high-average-power THz due to their limited output power. While kilowatt ytterbium lasers are increasingly adopted, their application in THz generation faces challenges: low optical-to-THz conversion efficiency (attributed to long pulse durations and low energy) and crystal damage under high pumping power. Here, we report a high-average-power strong-field THz source using a lithium niobate crystal pumped by a 1030-nm, 570-fs, 1-mJ, 50-kHz ytterbium femtosecond laser with tilted pulse front pumping (TPFP). By systematically optimizing TPFP implementations and comparing grating- and echelon-type configurations, we achieve a THz source with 64.5 mW average power at 42-W, 50-kHz pumping, and a focused peak electric field of 525 kV/cm at 0.83-mJ, 1-kHz operation. Additionally, we observe Zeeman torque signals in cobalt-iron ferromagnetic nanofilms. This high-repetition-rate, high-average-power THz system, combined with its potential capabilities in high signal-to-noise spectroscopy and imaging, promises transformative impacts in quantum matter manipulation, non-destructive testing, and biomedicine.

Greedy Trial Subspace Selection in Meshfree Time-Stepping Scheme with Applications in Coupled Bulk-Surface Pattern Formations

Combining kernel-based collocation methods with time-stepping methods to solve parabolic partial differential equations can potentially introduce challenges in balancing temporal and spatial discretization errors. Typically, using kernels with high orders of smoothness on some sufficiently dense set of trial centers provides high spatial approximation accuracy that can exceed the accuracy of finite difference methods in time. The paper proposes a greedy approach for selecting trial subspaces in the kernel-based collocation method applied to time-stepping to balance errors in both well-conditioned and ill-conditioned scenarios. The approach involves selecting trial centers using a fast block-greedy algorithm with new stopping criteria that aim to balance temporal and spatial errors. Numerical simulations of coupled bulk-surface pattern formations, a system involving two functions in the domain and two on the boundary, illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in reducing trial space dimensions while maintaining accuracy.

Antiferromagnetic magnonic charge current generation via ultrafast optical excitation

N\'eel spin-orbit torque allows a charge current pulse to efficiently manipulate the N\'eel vector in antiferromagnets, which offers a unique opportunity for ultrahigh density information storage with high speed. However, the reciprocal process of N\'eel spin-orbit torque, the generation of ultrafast charge current in antiferromagnets has not been demonstrated. Here, we report the experimental observation of charge current generation in antiferromagnetic metallic Mn2Au thin films using ultrafast optical excitation. The ultrafast laser pulse excites antiferromagnetic magnons, resulting in instantaneous non-equilibrium spin polarization at the antiferromagnetic spin sublattices with broken spatial symmetry. Then the charge current is generated directly via spin-orbit fields at the two sublattices, which is termed as the reciprocal phenomenon of N\'eel spin-orbit torque, and the associated THz emission can be detected at room temperature. Besides the fundamental significance on the Onsager reciprocity, the observed magnonic charge current generation in antiferromagnet would advance the development of antiferromagnetic THz emitter.
