Redefining the limits of real-time noise cancellation in optical fiber links

A broad and growing array of applications rely on the faithful transmission of ultrastable optical signals over noisy paths, requiring cancellation of environmentally induced noise. A generally accepted limit constrains how well the path length noise can be suppressed in real time. Here, we show that this standard limit is not fundamental and can be improved upon. By considering the temporal correlations between the round-trip and one-way signals, we develop a new framework for optimizing the noise cancellation feedback signal for any spatial distribution of noise along the signal path. We use this framework to surpass the standard limit in two sets of experiments. First, we demonstrate noise cancellation in a deployed urban optical fiber, where we achieve noise suppression approximately 6 dB beyond the standard limit. Then, in a reconfigurable lab-based fiber-optic testbed, we show that, for certain spatial distributions of noise, suppression of well over 10 dB beyond the standard limit is readily achievable. With the use of digital signal processing to generate the correction signal, our new technique requires no new electro-optic hardware relative to the field-standard noise cancellation scheme. This will allow for widespread adoption of these improved limits in existing systems, with applications in optical clock distribution, optical clock comparisons for fundamental physics and geodesy, and quantum networking.

BeetleFlow: An Integrative Deep Learning Pipeline for Beetle Image Processing

In entomology and ecology research, biologists often need to collect a large number of insects, among which beetles are the most common species. A common practice for biologists to organize beetles is to place them on trays and take a picture of each tray. Given the images of thousands of such trays, it is important to have an automated pipeline to process the large-scale data for further research. Therefore, we develop a 3-stage pipeline to detect all the beetles on each tray, sort and crop the image of each beetle, and do morphological segmentation on the cropped beetles. For detection, we design an iterative process utilizing a transformer-based open-vocabulary object detector and a vision-language model. For segmentation, we manually labeled 670 beetle images and fine-tuned two variants of a transformer-based segmentation model to achieve fine-grained segmentation of beetles with relatively high accuracy. The pipeline integrates multiple deep learning methods and is specialized for beetle image processing, which can greatly improve the efficiency to process large-scale beetle data and accelerate biological research.

FCMBench: The First Large-scale Financial Credit Multimodal Benchmark for Real-world Applications

FCMBench is the first large-scale and privacy-compliant multimodal benchmark for real-world financial credit applications, covering tasks and robustness challenges from domain specific workflows and constraints. The current version of FCMBench covers 26 certificate types, with 5198 privacy-compliant images and 13806 paired VQA samples. It evaluates models on Perception and Reasoning tasks under real-world Robustness interferences, including 3 foundational perception tasks, 4 credit-specific reasoning tasks demanding decision-oriented visual evidence interpretation, and 10 real-world challenges for rigorous robustness stress testing. Moreover, FCMBench offers privacy-compliant realism with minimal leakage risk through in-house scenario-aware captures of manually synthesized templates, without any publicly released images. We conduct extensive evaluations of 28 state-of-the-art vision-language models spanning 14 AI companies and research institutes. Among them, Gemini 3 Pro achieves the best F1 score as a commercial model (65.16), Kimi-K2.5 achieves the best score as an open-source baseline (60.58). The mean and the std. of all tested models is 44.8 and 10.3 respectively, indicating that FCMBench is non-trivial and provides strong resolution for separating modern vision-language model capabilities. Robustness evaluations reveal that even top-performing models experience notable performance degradation under the designed challenges. We have open-sourced this benchmark to advance AI research in the credit domain and provide a domain-specific task for real-world AI applications.

Boundary critical phenomena in the quantum Ashkin-Teller model

We investigate the boundary critical phenomena of the one-dimensional quantum Ashkin-Teller model using boundary conformal field theory and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations. Based on the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-orbifold of the $c=1$ compactified boson boundary conformal field theory, we construct microscopic lattice boundary terms that renormalize to the stable conformal boundary conditions, utilizing simple current extensions and the underlying $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ symmetry to explicitly characterize the four-state Potts point. We validate these theoretical identifications via finite-size spectroscopy of the lattice energy spectra, confirming their consistency with $D_4$ symmetry and Kramers-Wannier duality. Finally, we discuss the boundary renormalization group flows among these identified fixed points to propose a global phase diagram for the boundary criticality.

Fiber Link Stabilization with a Multicore Fiber Amplifier

We study the use of separate cores of a multicore erbium-doped fiber amplifier (MC-EDFA) in a noise-canceled link for ultrastable optical frequency transfer. We demonstrate fractional frequency instability of $5\times10^{-19}$ at 1000 s averaging time for the stabilized MC-EDFA alone and $1.4\times10^{-18}$ at 1000 s averaging time when integrated with a 40 km-long 7-core spooled fiber. This study further establishes multicore fiber (MCF) networks as a promising platform for ultrastable frequency transfer, serving as an important step toward incorporating precision time and frequency distribution into future MCF communication infrastructures.

A Particle-in-Cell Simulation Framework for Thomson Scattering Analysis in Inertial Confinement Fusion

In inertial confinement fusion (ICF), Thomson scattering (TS) is a widely used diagnostic technique for probing plasma conditions. We present a first-principles numerical approach to obtaining scattered light signals of ion acoustic features with high resolution in angle and frequency space using particle-in-cell simulations under typical ICF conditions. Our method demonstrates good agreement with existing theories for thermal collective TS. In the super-thermal collective regime, the results align with theory when the driven plasma modes are well-matched in wave vectors to the probe and collecting beams. Moreover, we also find that TS signals can remain significant even under imperfect wave-vector matching-a result that contradicts the conventional expectation that the TS spectrum strictly follows the plasma density spectrum. We attribute this discrepancy to a beating wave mechanism arising from the interaction between the probe beam and driven plasma density modulations. Our work thus provides a practical framework for interpreting TS signals from driven ion modes, a common yet complex feature in ICF plasmas.

Mind the Ambiguity: Aleatoric Uncertainty Quantification in LLMs for Safe Medical Question Answering

The deployment of Large Language Models in Medical Question Answering is severely hampered by ambiguous user queries, a significant safety risk that demonstrably reduces answer accuracy in high-stakes healthcare settings. In this paper, we formalize this challenge by linking input ambiguity to aleatoric uncertainty (AU), which is the irreducible uncertainty arising from underspecified input. To facilitate research in this direction, we construct CV-MedBench, the first benchmark designed for studying input ambiguity in Medical QA. Using this benchmark, we analyze AU from a representation engineering perspective, revealing that AU is linearly encoded in LLM's internal activation patterns. Leveraging this insight, we introduce a novel AU-guided "Clarify-Before-Answer" framework, which incorporates AU-Probe - a lightweight module that detects input ambiguity directly from hidden states. Unlike existing uncertainty estimation methods, AU-Probe requires neither LLM fine-tuning nor multiple forward passes, enabling an efficient mechanism to proactively request user clarification and significantly enhance safety. Extensive experiments across four open LLMs demonstrate the effectiveness of our QA framework, with an average accuracy improvement of 9.48% over baselines. Our framework provides an efficient and robust solution for safe Medical QA, strengthening the reliability of health-related applications. The code is available at https://github.com/yaokunliu/AU-Med.git, and the CV-MedBench dataset is released on Hugging Face at https://huggingface.co/datasets/yaokunl/CV-MedBench.

MASH: A Multiplatform and Multimodal Annotated Dataset for Societal Impact of Hurricane

Natural disasters cause multidimensional threats to human societies, with hurricanes exemplifying one of the most disruptive events that not only caused severe physical damage but also sparked widespread discussion on social media platforms. Existing datasets for studying societal impacts of hurricanes often focus on outdated hurricanes and are limited to a single social media platform, failing to capture the broader societal impact in today's diverse social media environment. Moreover, existing datasets annotate visual and textual content of the post separately, failing to account for the multimodal nature of social media posts. To address these gaps, we present a multiplatform and Multimodal Annotated Dataset for Societal Impact of Hurricane (MASH) that includes 59,607 relevant social media data posts from Reddit, TikTok, and YouTube. In addition, all relevant social media data posts are annotated in a multimodal approach that considers both textual and visual content on three dimensions: Humanitarian Classes, Bias Classes, and Information Integrity Classes. To our best knowledge, MASH is the first large-scale, multi-platform, multimodal, and multi-dimensionally annotated dataset centered on hurricane disasters. In addition, we introduce an online platform that supports interactive data exploration, provides preliminary analytical results, and allows users to share their insights regarding the societal impacts of hurricanes. We envision that MASH can contribute to the study of hurricanes' impact on society, such as disaster response, disaster severity classification, public sentiment analysis, disaster policy making, and bias identification. The dataset is publicly available at https://huggingface.co/datasets/YRC10/MASH under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) license.

A Global Optimal Theory of Portfolio beyond R-$σ$ Model

The deviation of the efficient market hypothesis (EMH) for the practical economic system allows us gain the arbitrary or risk premium in finance markets. We propose the triplet $(R,H,σ)$ theory to give the local and global optimal portfolio, which eneralize from the $(R,σ)$ model. We present the formulation of the triplet $(R,H,σ)$ model and give the Pareto optimal solution as well as comparing it with the numerical investigations for the Chinese stock market. We define the local optimal weights of the triplet $(\mathbf{w}_{R},\mathbf{w}_{H},\mathbf{w}_σ)$, which constructs the triangle of the quasi-optimal investing subspace such that we further define the centroid of the triangle or the incenter of the triangle as the optimal investing weights, which optimizes the mean return, the arbitrary or risk premium and the volatility risk. By investigating numerically the Chinese stock market as an example we demonstrate the validity of the formulation and obtain the global optimal strategy and quasi-optimal investing subspace. The theory provides an efficient way to design the portfolio for different style investors, conservative or aggressive investors, in finance market to maximize the mean return and arbitrary or risk premium with a small volatility risk.

Leveraging Contrast Information for Efficient Document Shadow Removal

Document shadows are a major obstacle in the digitization process. Due to the dense information in text and patterns covered by shadows, document shadow removal requires specialized methods. Existing document shadow removal methods, although showing some progress, still rely on additional information such as shadow masks or lack generalization and effectiveness across different shadow scenarios. This often results in incomplete shadow removal or loss of original document content and tones. Moreover, these methods tend to underutilize the information present in the original shadowed document image. In this paper, we refocus our approach on the document images themselves, which inherently contain rich information. We propose an end-to-end document shadow removal method guided by contrast representation, following a coarse-to-fine refinement approach. By extracting document contrast information, we can effectively and quickly locate shadow shapes and positions without the need for additional masks. This information is then integrated into the refined shadow removal process, providing better guidance for network-based removal and feature fusion. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Contrast-Prior Enhanced Duality for Mask-Free Shadow Removal

Existing shadow removal methods often rely on shadow masks, which are challenging to acquire in real-world scenarios. Exploring intrinsic image cues, such as local contrast information, presents a potential alternative for guiding shadow removal in the absence of explicit masks. However, the cue's inherent ambiguity becomes a critical limitation in complex scenes, where it can fail to distinguish true shadows from low-reflectance objects and intricate background textures. To address this motivation, we propose the Adaptive Gated Dual-Branch Attention (AGBA) mechanism. AGBA dynamically filters and re-weighs the contrast prior to effectively disentangle shadow features from confounding visual elements. Furthermore, to tackle the persistent challenge of restoring soft shadow boundaries and fine-grained details, we introduce a diffusion-based Frequency-Contrast Fusion Network (FCFN) that leverages high-frequency and contrast cues to guide the generative process. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art results among mask-free approaches while maintaining competitive performance relative to mask-based methods.

Driving with Regulation: Trustworthy and Interpretable Decision-Making for Autonomous Driving with Retrieval-Augmented Reasoning

Understanding and adhering to traffic regulations is essential for autonomous vehicles to ensure safety and trustworthiness. However, traffic regulations are complex, context-dependent, and differ between regions, posing a major challenge to conventional rule-based decision-making approaches. We present an interpretable, regulation-aware decision-making framework, DriveReg, which enables autonomous vehicles to understand and adhere to region-specific traffic laws and safety guidelines. The framework integrates a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)-based Traffic Regulation Retrieval Agent, which retrieves relevant rules from regulatory documents based on the current situation, and a Large Language Model (LLM)-powered Reasoning Agent that evaluates actions for legal compliance and safety. Our design emphasizes interpretability to enhance transparency and trustworthiness. To support systematic evaluation, we introduce the DriveReg Scenarios Dataset, a comprehensive dataset of driving scenarios across Boston, Singapore, and Los Angeles, with both hypothesized text-based cases and real-world driving data, constructed and annotated to evaluate models' capacity for regulation understanding and reasoning. We validate our framework on the DriveReg Scenarios Dataset and real-world deployment, demonstrating strong performance and robustness across diverse environments.

Read the Docs Before Rewriting: Equip Rewriter with Domain Knowledge via Continual Pre-training

A Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)-based question-answering (QA) system enhances a large language model's knowledge by retrieving relevant documents based on user queries. Discrepancies between user queries and document phrasings often necessitate query rewriting. However, in specialized domains, the rewriter model may struggle due to limited domain-specific knowledge. To resolve this, we propose the R\&R (Read the doc before Rewriting) rewriter, which involves continual pre-training on professional documents, akin to how students prepare for open-book exams by reviewing textbooks. Additionally, it can be combined with supervised fine-tuning for improved results. Experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate that R\&R excels in professional QA across multiple domains, effectively bridging the query-document gap, while maintaining good performance in general scenarios, thus advancing the application of RAG-based QA systems in specialized fields.

Multimodal Item Scoring for Natural Language Recommendation via Gaussian Process Regression with LLM Relevance Judgments

Natural Language Recommendation (NLRec) generates item suggestions based on the relevance between user-issued NL requests and NL item description passages. Existing NLRec approaches often use Dense Retrieval (DR) to compute item relevance scores from aggregation of inner products between user request embeddings and relevant passage embeddings. However, DR views the request as the sole relevance label, thus leading to a unimodal scoring function centered on the query embedding that is often a weak proxy for query relevance. To better capture the potential multimodal distribution of the relevance scoring function that may arise from complex NLRec data, we propose GPR-LLM that uses Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) with LLM relevance judgments for a subset of candidate passages. Experiments on four NLRec datasets and two LLM backbones demonstrate that GPR-LLM with an RBF kernel, capable of modeling multimodal relevance scoring functions, consistently outperforms simpler unimodal kernels (dot product, cosine similarity), as well as baseline methods including DR, cross-encoder, and pointwise LLM-based relevance scoring by up to 65%. Overall, GPR-LLM provides an efficient and effective approach to NLRec within a minimal LLM labeling budget.

A Simple but Effective Elaborative Query Reformulation Approach for Natural Language Recommendation

Natural Language (NL) recommender systems aim to retrieve relevant items from free-form user queries and item descriptions. Existing systems often rely on dense retrieval (DR), which struggles to interpret challenging queries that express broad (e.g., "cities for youth friendly activities") or indirect (e.g., "cities for a high school graduation trip") user intents. While query reformulation (QR) has been widely adopted to improve such systems, existing QR methods tend to focus only on expanding the range of query subtopics (breadth) or elaborating on the potential meaning of a query (depth), but not both. In this paper, we propose EQR (Elaborative Subtopic Query Reformulation), a large language model-based QR method that combines both breadth and depth by generating potential query subtopics with information-rich elaborations. We also introduce three new natural language recommendation benchmarks in travel, hotel, and restaurant domains to establish evaluation of NL recommendation with challenging queries. Experiments show EQR substantially outperforms state-of-the-art QR methods in various evaluation metrics, highlighting that a simple yet effective QR approach can significantly improve NL recommender systems for queries with broad and indirect user intents.

Balancing Fine-tuning and RAG: A Hybrid Strategy for Dynamic LLM Recommendation Updates

Large Language Models (LLMs) empower recommendation systems through their advanced reasoning and planning capabilities. However, the dynamic nature of user interests and content poses a significant challenge: While initial fine-tuning aligns LLMs with domain knowledge and user preferences, it fails to capture such real-time changes, necessitating robust update mechanisms. This paper investigates strategies for updating LLM-powered recommenders, focusing on the trade-offs between ongoing fine-tuning and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). Using an LLM-powered user interest exploration system as a case study, we perform a comparative analysis of these methods across dimensions like cost, agility, and knowledge incorporation. We propose a hybrid update strategy that leverages the long-term knowledge adaptation of periodic fine-tuning with the agility of low-cost RAG. We demonstrate through live A/B experiments on a billion-user platform that this hybrid approach yields statistically significant improvements in user satisfaction, offering a practical and cost-effective framework for maintaining high-quality LLM-powered recommender systems.

Intelligent Configuration of Integrated Microwave Photonic Filter Featuring Self-Stabilization and Programmable Response

Integrated microwave photonic filters (IMPFs) emerge as promising candidates for advanced microwave systems owing to their distinctive combination of wide operational bandwidth, flexibility, and compact size. Nevertheless, the complex and time-consuming manual manipulation of IMPFs remains a significant impediment to their widespread applications. Here, to the best of the knowledge, the first intelligent configuration of IMPF is experimentally demonstrated, featuring wideband center frequency tunability, flexible bandwidth reconfigurability, self-stabilization, and excellent channel equalization simultaneously. The configuration is enabled by our proposed universal hybrid collaboration strategy, which fully unleashes the hardware potential of the optical device, thus enabling comprehensive synergy of multiple properties. Results show that the center frequency of IMPF is tuned from 2 to 48 GHz, covering microwave S band to Ka band, and the bandwidth is reconfigured from 0.66 to 4.15 GHz, with a rejection ratio of up to 37.67 dB. The roll-off rate and shape factor reach as high as 17.50 dB GHz-1 and 0.78, respectively. Meanwhile, the maximum center frequency drift of IMPF over 3 h is reduced from 11.950 to 0.051 GHz even without a thermo-electric cooler, indicating that the center frequency stability is enhanced by 234 times. The passband shape of the IMPF is dynamically adjusted to equalize frequency-dependent fading, achieving up to 2.42 dB of intra-channel fading compensation. This work highlights the potential of IMPFs based on intelligent configuration, unlocking new avenues for practical applications of microwave photonic signal processing.

Serendipitous Recommendation with Multimodal LLM

Conventional recommendation systems succeed in identifying relevant content but often fail to provide users with surprising or novel items. Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) possess the world knowledge and multimodal understanding needed for serendipity, but their integration into billion-item-scale platforms presents significant challenges. In this paper, we propose a novel hierarchical framework where fine-tuned MLLMs provide high-level guidance to conventional recommendation models, steering them towards more serendipitous suggestions. This approach leverages MLLM strengths in understanding multimodal content and user interests while retaining the efficiency of traditional models for item-level recommendation. This mitigates the complexity of applying MLLMs directly to vast action spaces. We also demonstrate a chain-of-thought strategy enabling MLLMs to discover novel user interests by first understanding video content and then identifying relevant yet unexplored interest clusters. Through live experiments within a commercial short-form video platform serving billions of users, we show that our MLLM-powered approach significantly improves both recommendation serendipity and user satisfaction.
