Maximal abelian extension of $X_0(p)$ unramified outside cusps

Let $p$ be a prime number. Mazur proved that a geometrically maximal unramified abelian covering of $X_0(p)$ over $\mathbb Q$ is given by the Shimura covering $X_2(p) \to X_0(p)$, that is, a unique subcovering of $X_1(p) \to X_0(p)$ of degree $N_p := (p-1)/\gcd(p-1, 12)$. In this short paper, we show that a geometrically maximal abelian covering $X_2'(p) \to X_0(p)$ of $X_0(p)$ over $\mathbb Q$ unramified outside cusps is cyclic of degree $2N_p$. The main ingredient for the construction of $X_2'(p)$ is the generalized Dedelind eta functions.

TAPESTRY: A Blockchain based Service for Trusted Interaction Online

We present a novel blockchain based service for proving the provenance of online digital identity, exposed as an assistive tool to help non-expert users make better decisions about whom to trust online. Our service harnesses the digital personhood (DP); the longitudinal and multi-modal signals created through users' lifelong digital interactions, as a basis for evidencing the provenance of identity. We describe how users may exchange trust evidence derived from their DP, in a granular and privacy-preserving manner, with other users in order to demonstrate coherence and longevity in their behaviour online. This is enabled through a novel secure infrastructure combining hybrid on- and off-chain storage combined with deep learning for DP analytics and visualization. We show how our tools enable users to make more effective decisions on whether to trust unknown third parties online, and also to spot behavioural deviations in their own social media footprints indicative of account hijacking.

Feature Pyramid Hashing

In recent years, deep-networks-based hashing has become a leading approach for large-scale image retrieval. Most deep hashing approaches use the high layer to extract the powerful semantic representations. However, these methods have limited ability for fine-grained image retrieval because the semantic features extracted from the high layer are difficult in capturing the subtle differences. To this end, we propose a novel two-pyramid hashing architecture to learn both the semantic information and the subtle appearance details for fine-grained image search. Inspired by the feature pyramids of convolutional neural network, a vertical pyramid is proposed to capture the high-layer features and a horizontal pyramid combines multiple low-layer features with structural information to capture the subtle differences. To fuse the low-level features, a novel combination strategy, called consensus fusion, is proposed to capture all subtle information from several low-layers for finer retrieval. Extensive evaluation on two fine-grained datasets CUB-200-2011 and Stanford Dogs demonstrate that the proposed method achieves significant performance compared with the state-of-art baselines.

Deep Policy Hashing Network with Listwise Supervision

Deep-networks-based hashing has become a leading approach for large-scale image retrieval, which learns a similarity-preserving network to map similar images to nearby hash codes. The pairwise and triplet losses are two widely used similarity preserving manners for deep hashing. These manners ignore the fact that hashing is a prediction task on the list of binary codes. However, learning deep hashing with listwise supervision is challenging in 1) how to obtain the rank list of whole training set when the batch size of the deep network is always small and 2) how to utilize the listwise supervision. In this paper, we present a novel deep policy hashing architecture with two systems are learned in parallel: a query network and a shared and slowly changing database network. The following three steps are repeated until convergence: 1) the database network encodes all training samples into binary codes to obtain a whole rank list, 2) the query network is trained based on policy learning to maximize a reward that indicates the performance of the whole ranking list of binary codes, e.g., mean average precision (MAP), and 3) the database network is updated as the query network. Extensive evaluations on several benchmark datasets show that the proposed method brings substantial improvements over state-of-the-art hashing methods.

Investigation of $cs\bar c\bar s$ tetraquark in the chiral quark model

Inspired by the recent observation of exotic resonances $X(4140)$, $X(4274)$, $X(4350)$, $X(4500)$ and $X(4700)$ reported by several experiment collaborations, we investigated the four-quark system $cs\bar c\bar s$ with quantum numbers $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ and $0^{++}$ in the framework of the chiral quark model. Two configurations, diquark-antidiquark and meson-meson, with all possible color structures are considered. The results show that no molecular state can be formed, but the resonance may exist if the color structure of meson-meson configuration is $8\otimes8$. In the present calculation, the $X(4274)$ can be assigned as the $cs\bar c\bar s$ tetraquark states with $J^{PC}=1^{++}$, but the energy of $X(4140)$ is too low to be regarded as the tetraquark state. $X(4350)$ can be a good candidate of compact tetraquark state with $J^{PC}=0^{++}$. When the radial excitation is taken into account, the $X(4700)$ can be explained as the $2S$ radial excited tetraquark state with $J^{PC}=0^{++}$. As for $X(4500)$, there is no matching state in our calculation.

Quaternionic loci in Siegel's modular threefold

Let $\mathcal Q_D$ be the set of moduli points on Siegel's modular threefold whose corresponding principally polarized abelian surfaces have quaternionic multiplication by a maximal order $\mathcal O$ in an indefinite quaternion algebra of discriminant $D$ over $\mathbb Q$ such that the Rosati involution coincides with a positive involution of the form $α\mapstoμ^{-1}\overlineαμ$ on $\mathcal O$ for some $μ\in\mathcal O$ with $μ^2+D=0$. In this paper, we first give a formula for the number of irreducible components in $\mathcal Q_D$, strengthening an earlier result of Rotger. Then for each irreducible component of genus $0$, we determine its rational parameterization in terms of a Hauptmodul of the associated Shimura curve.

Design of a common verification board for different back-end electronics options of the JUNO experiment

The JUNO observatory is a medium baseline experiment in construction in China. A large liquid scintillator volume detects the antineutrinos issued from nuclear reactors. The liquid scintillator detector is instrumented with 17000 large photomultiplier tubes. Two veto systems are added to reduce the backgrounds. The front-end electronics system performs analog signal processing (the underwater electronics) and after about 100 m cables, the back-end electronics system, outside water, consists of the DAQ and the trigger. One of the main challenges of the whole electronics system is the fast data link (250 Mb/s) combined with the power delivery over 100 m Ethernet cables. Three different options are considered to connect the front-end and the back-end systems, depending on the DAQ data volume and the way to deliver the power to the underwater system. In order to test the three options in an efficient and fast way, a common baseboard with interfaces to different mezzanine boards is designed.

Pattern Transitions in a Soft Cylindrical Shell

Instability patterns of rolling up a sleeve appear more intricate than the ones of walking over a rug on floor, both characterized as uniaxially compressed soft-film/stiff-substrate systems. This can be explained by curvature effects. To investigate pattern transitions on a curved surface, we study a soft shell sliding on a rigid cylinder by experiments, computations and theoretical analyses. We reveal a novel post-buckling phenomenon involving multiple successive bifurcations: smooth-wrinkle-ridge-sagging transitions. The shell initially buckles into periodic axisymmetric wrinkles at the threshold and then a wrinkle-to-ridge transition occurs upon further axial compression. When the load increases to the third bifurcation, the amplitude of the ridge reaches its limit and the symmetry is broken with the ridge sagging into a recumbent fold. It is identified that hysteresis loops and the Maxwell equal-energy conditions are associated with the co-existence of wrinkle/ridge or ridge/sagging patterns. Such a bifurcation scheme is inherently general and independent of material constitutive models.

Evaluation of Certain Hypergeometric Functions over Finite Fields

For an odd prime $p$, let $ϕ$ denote the quadratic character of the multiplicative group ${\mathbb F}_p^\times$, where ${\mathbb F}_p$ is the finite field of $p$ elements. In this paper, we will obtain evaluations of the hypergeometric functions $ {}_2F_1\left(\begin{matrix} ϕψ& ψ\\ & ϕ\end{matrix};x\right)$, $x\in {\mathbb F}_p$, $x\neq 0, 1$, over ${\mathbb F}_p$ in terms of Hecke character attached to CM elliptic curves for characters $ψ$ of ${\mathbb F}_p^\times$ of order $3$, $4$, $6$, $8$, and $12$.

The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Benchmark: Object Detection and Tracking

With the advantage of high mobility, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are used to fuel numerous important applications in computer vision, delivering more efficiency and convenience than surveillance cameras with fixed camera angle, scale and view. However, very limited UAV datasets are proposed, and they focus only on a specific task such as visual tracking or object detection in relatively constrained scenarios. Consequently, it is of great importance to develop an unconstrained UAV benchmark to boost related researches. In this paper, we construct a new UAV benchmark focusing on complex scenarios with new level challenges. Selected from 10 hours raw videos, about 80,000 representative frames are fully annotated with bounding boxes as well as up to 14 kinds of attributes (e.g., weather condition, flying altitude, camera view, vehicle category, and occlusion) for three fundamental computer vision tasks: object detection, single object tracking, and multiple object tracking. Then, a detailed quantitative study is performed using most recent state-of-the-art algorithms for each task. Experimental results show that the current state-of-the-art methods perform relative worse on our dataset, due to the new challenges appeared in UAV based real scenes, e.g., high density, small object, and camera motion. To our knowledge, our work is the first time to explore such issues in unconstrained scenes comprehensively.

Surface phases of the transition-metal dichalcogenide IrTe2

Transition-metal dichalcogenide IrTe2 has attracted attention because of striped lattice, charge ordering and superconductivity. We have investigated the surface structure of IrTe2, using low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). A complex striped lattice modulations as a function of temperature is observed, which shows hysteresis between cooling and warming. While the bulk 5x1 and 8x1 phases appear at high temperatures, the surface ground state has the 6x1 phase, not seen in the bulk, and the surface transition temperatures are distinct from the bulk. The broken symmetry at the surface creates a quite different phase diagram, with the coexistence of several periodicities resembling devil's staircase behavior.

Real-time eSports Match Result Prediction

In this paper, we try to predict the winning team of a match in the multiplayer eSports game Dota 2. To address the weaknesses of previous work, we consider more aspects of prior (pre-match) features from individual players' match history, as well as real-time (during-match) features at each minute as the match progresses. We use logistic regression, the proposed Attribute Sequence Model, and their combinations as the prediction models. In a dataset of 78362 matches where 20631 matches contain replay data, our experiments show that adding more aspects of prior features improves accuracy from 58.69% to 71.49%, and introducing real-time features achieves up to 93.73% accuracy when predicting at the 40th minute.

Context-aware Natural Language Generation with Recurrent Neural Networks

This paper studied generating natural languages at particular contexts or situations. We proposed two novel approaches which encode the contexts into a continuous semantic representation and then decode the semantic representation into text sequences with recurrent neural networks. During decoding, the context information are attended through a gating mechanism, addressing the problem of long-range dependency caused by lengthy sequences. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches on user review data, in which rich contexts are available and two informative contexts, sentiments and products, are selected for evaluation. Experiments show that the fake reviews generated by our approaches are very natural. Results of fake review detection with human judges show that more than 50\% of the fake reviews are misclassified as the real reviews, and more than 90\% are misclassified by existing state-of-the-art fake review detection algorithm.

Rational torsion on the generalized Jacobian of a modular curve with cuspidal modulus

We consider the generalized Jacobian $\widetilde{J}_0(N)$ of a modular curve $X_0(N)$ with respect to a reduced divisor given by the sum of all cusps on it. When $N$ is a power of a prime $\geq 5$, we exhibit that the group of rational torsion points $\widetilde{J}_0(N)(\mathbb{Q})_{\mathrm{Tor}}$ tends to be much smaller than the classical Jacobian.

For the International Large Detector concept at the planned International Linear Collider, the use of time projection chambers (TPC) with micro-pattern gas detector readout as the main tracking detector is investigated. In this paper, results from a prototype TPC, placed in a 1 T solenoidal field and read out with three independent GEM-based readout modules, are reported. The TPC was exposed to a 6 GeV electron beam at the DESY II synchrotron. The efficiency for reconstructing hits, the measurement of the drift velocity, the space point resolution and the control of field inhomogeneities are presented.

Equations of hyperelliptic Shimura curves

By constructing suitable Borcherds forms on Shimura curves and using Schofer's formula for norms of values of Borcherds forms at CM-points, we determine all the equations of hyperelliptic Shimura curves $X_0^D(N)$. As a byproduct, we also address the problem of whether a modular form on Shimura curves $X_0^D(N)/W_{D,N}$ with a divisor supported on CM-divisors can be realized as a Borcherds form, where $X_0^D(N)/W_{D,N}$ denotes the quotient of $X_0^D(N)$ by all the Atkin-Lehner involutions. The construction of Borcherds forms is done by solving certain integer programming problems.

Special values of hypergeometric functions and periods of CM elliptic curves

Let $X_0^6(1)/W_6$ be the Atkin-Lehner quotient of the Shimura curve $X_0^6(1)$ associated to a maximal order in an indefinite quaternion algebra of discriminant $6$ over $\mathbb Q$. By realizing modular forms on $X_0^6(1)/W_6$ in two ways, one in terms of hypergeometric functions and the other in terms of Borcherds forms, and using Schofer's formula for values of Borcherds forms at CM-points, we obtain special values of certain hypergeometric functions in terms of periods of elliptic curves over $\overline\mathbb Q$ with complex multiplication.
