Heavy-light flavour correlations of anisotropic flows at LHC energies within event-by-event transport approach

The heavy quarks (HQs) are unique probe of the hot QCD matter properties and their dynamics is coupled to the locally thermalized expanding quark gluon plasma. We present here a novel study of the event by event correlations between light and heavy flavour flow harmonics at LHC energy within a transport approach. Interaction between heavy quarks and light quarks have been taken into account exploring the impact of different temperature dependence of the transport coefficients $D_s$ and $Γ$. Our study indicates that $v^{heavy}_n-v^{light}_n$ correlation and the relative fluctuations of anisotropic flows, $σ_{v_{n}}/\langle v_n \rangle$, are novel observables to understand the heavy quark-bulk interaction and are sensitive to the temperature dependence even to moderate differences of $D_s(T)$, or $Γ(T)$. Hence a comparison of such new observables for HQ to upcoming experimental data at both RHIC and LHC can put further constraints on heavy quark transport coefficients and in particular on its temperature dependence toward a solid comparison between the phenomenological determination and the lattice QCD calculations.

Impact of Glasma on heavy quark observables in nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC

In the pre-thermal equilibrium stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions, a strong quasi-classical transverse gluon field emerges at about $τ_0 \simeq 0.1 \, \rm fm/c$ and evolves together with their longitudinal counterparts according to the classical Yang-Mills (CYM) equations. Recently it has been shown that these fields induce a diffusion of charm quarks in momentum space resulting in a tilt of their spectrum without a significant drag. We find that in nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC such a novel dynamics of charm quarks leads to an initial enhancement of the nuclear modification factor ($R_{AA}$) at $p_T$ larger than 2 GeV$/c$ contrary to the standard lore. Moreover, the same dynamics leads to a larger final elliptic flow ($v_2$) inducing a relation between $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$ that is quite close to the experimental measurements. Our study also shows that such an initial pre-thermal stage is unlikely to be described in terms of a standard drag and diffusion dynamics, because even if one tune such coefficients to reproduce the same $R_{AA}(p_T)$ this would imply a significantly smaller $v_2$.

Azimuthal angle dependence of the longitudinal spin polarization in relativistic heavy ion collisions

The azimuthal angle dependence of quark spin polarization in the longitudinal beam direction of non-central relativistic heavy ion collisions is studied in the chiral kinetic approach. Contrary to the prediction from models based on the assumption of thermal equilibrium of spin degrees of freedom that the quark spin polarization always points along the direction of local vorticity field, we find the two can have opposite directions due to the effect from the transversal component of vorticity field, which can lead to a redistribution of axial charges in the produced matter. Our finding is consistent with the azimuthal angle dependence of the longitudinal spin polarization of $Λ$ hyperons, which is mainly determined by that of the strange quark, recently measured in the experiments by the STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC).

Probing the topological charge in QCD matter via multiplicity up-down asymmetry

Relativistic heavy ion collisions provide the possibility to study the topological charge in QCD matter through the event-by-event fluctuating net axial charge or nonequal numbers of left- and right-handed quarks they generate in the produced quark-gluon plasma. Based on the chiral kinetic approach for nearly massless quarks and antiquarks in the strong vorticity field produced along the normal direction of the reaction plane of non-central heavy ion collisions, we show that a unique signal for the topological charge in QCD matter can be identified from the asymmetric distribution of particles with momenta pointing in the upper and lower hemispheres of the reaction plane as a result of the fluctuating net axial charge.

Chiral kinetic approach to the chiral magnetic effect in isobaric collisions

Based on the chiral kinetic approach using quarks and antiquarks from a multiphase transport model as initial conditions, we study the chiral magnetic effect, i.e., the magnetic field induced separation of charged particles in the transverse plane, in non-central isobaric collisions of Zr$+$Zr and Ru$+$Ru, which have the same atomic number but different proton numbers. For the observable $γ^{OS}-γ^{SS}$ related to the difference between the correlations of particles of opposite charges and of same charges, we find a difference between the two collision systems if the magnetic field has a long lifetime of 0.6 fm$/c$ and the observable is evaluated using the initial reaction plane. This signal of the chiral magnetic effect becomes smaller and comparable to the background contributions from elliptic flow if the event plane determined from particle emission angles is used. For the other observable given by the $R(ΔS)$ correlator related to the distribution of average charge separation in a collision, the signal due to the chiral magnetic effect is found to depend less on whether the reaction or event plane is used in the analysis, and their difference between the two isobaric collision systems is thus a more robust observable.

Light nuclei production in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV

Using the coalescence model based on the phase-space distribution of nucleons from an extended blast-wave model that includes the space-momentum correlation of high momentum nucleons, we study the transverse momentum spectra and elliptic flows of deuteron and helium-3 in Pb+Pb collisions at the energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV. We find that the measured elliptic flows of deuteron can be satisfactorily described if nucleons of large transverse momenta are more spread in space when their momenta are more aligned along the reaction plane.

Lambda hyperon polarization in relativistic heavy ion collisions from the chiral kinetic approach

Based on the chiral kinetic approach using initial conditions from a multiphase transport model, we study the spin polarizations of quarks and antiquarks in non-central heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Because of the non-vanishing vorticity field in these collisions, quarks and antiquarks are found to acquire appreciable spin polarizations in the direction perpendicular to the reaction plane. Converting quarks and antiquarks to hadrons via the coalescence model, we further calculate the spin polarizations of Lambda and anti-Lambda hyperons and find their values comparable to those measured in experiments by the STAR Collaboration.

Elliptic flows of light nuclei

Using the coalescence model based on nucleons from a blast-wave model with its parameters fitted to the measured proton transverse momentum spectrum and elliptic flow in heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, we study the elliptic flows of light nuclei in these collisions. We find that to describe the measured elliptic flows of deuterons (anti-deuterons) and tritons (helium-3) requires that the emission source for nucleons of high transverse momentum is more elongated along the reaction plane than in the perpendicular direction. Our results thus suggest that the elliptic flows of light nuclei can be used to study the nucleon emission source in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Three-particle correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions in a multiphase transport model

Using a multiphase transport model, we study three-particle mixed harmonic correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions by considering the observable $C_{m,n,m+n}=\langle\negmedspace\langle \cos(mϕ_1+nϕ_2-(m+n)ϕ_3)\rangle\negmedspace\rangle$, where $ϕ_{1,2,3}$ are azimuthal angles of all particle triplets. We find that except for $C_{123}$, our results on the centrality dependence of $C_{112}$, $C_{224}$ and $C_{235}$ as well as the relative pseudorapidity dependence of $C_{123}$ and $C_{224}$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$200 GeV agree reasonable well with the experimental data from the STAR Collaboration. We discuss the implications of our results.

Study of chiral vortical and magnetic effects in the anomalous transport model

We extend our recent study of chiral magnetic effect in relativistic heavy ion collisions based on an anomalous transport model by including also the chiral vortical effect. We find that although vorticities in the chirally restored quark matter, which result from the large angular momentum in non-central collisions, can generate an axial charge dipole moment in the transverse plane of a heavy ion collision, it does not produce a difference in the eccentricities of negatively and positively charged particles. As a result, including the chiral vortical effect alone cannot lead to a splitting between the elliptic flows of negatively and positively charged particles. On the other hand, negatively and positively charged particles do develop a splitting in their elliptic flows if the effect due to a strong and long-lived magnetic field is also included. However, to have a positive slope in the dependence of the elliptic flow splitting on the charge asymmetry of the quark matter, as seen in experiments, requires the neglect of the effect of the Lorentz force. In this case, an elliptic flow splitting appears even at vanishing charge asymmetry.

Anomalous transport model study of chiral magnetic effects in heavy ion collisions

Using an anomalous transport model for massless quarks and antiquarks, we study the effect of a magnetic field on the elliptic flows of quarks and antiquarks in relativistic heavy ion collisions. With initial conditions from a blast wave model and assuming that the strong magnetic field produced in non-central heavy ion collisions can last for a sufficiently long time, we obtain an appreciable electric quadrupole moment in the transverse plane of a heavy ion collision. The electric quadrupole moment subsequently leads to a splitting between the elliptic flows of quarks and antiquarks. The slope of the charge asymmetry dependence of the elliptic flow difference between positively and negatively charged particles is positive, which is expected from the chiral magnetic wave formed in the produced QGP and observed in experiments at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, only if the Lorentz force acting on the charged particles is neglected and the quark-antiquark scattering is assumed to be dominated by the chirality changing channel.
