A Method for On-Orbit Calibration of the VLAST-P Electromagnetic Calorimeter

The Very Large Area Gamma-ray Space Telescope Pathfinder (VLAST-P), as the technology validation satellite for the VLAST mission, is designed to observe high-energy solar bursts on orbit. The CsI electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) is one of the key sub-detectors of VLAST-P. To investigate the on-orbit energy calibration method of the ECAL, a Geant4-based simulation of VLAST-P was carried out. The results show an energy resolution better than 10% in the 0.1 to 5 GeV range and a linearity deviation below 2%. A dedicated minimum-ionization-particle (MIP) calibration method was developed to ensure accurate energy reconstruction and to monitor detector stability throughout the in-orbit calibration period.

The development of a high granular crystal calorimeter prototype of VLAST

Very Large Area gamma-ray Space Telescope (VLAST) is the next-generation flagship space observatory for high-energy gamma-ray detection proposed by China. The observation energy range covers from MeV to TeV and beyond, with acceptance of 10 m^2sr. The calorimeter serves as a crucial subdetector of VLAST, responsible for high-precision energy measurement and electron/proton discrimination. This discrimination capability is essential for accurately identifying gamma-ray events among the background of charged particles. To accommodate such an extensive energy range, a high dynamic range readout scheme employing dual avalanche photodiodes (APDs) has been developed, achieving a remarkable dynamic range of 10^6. Furthermore, a high granular prototype based on bismuth germanate (BGO) cubic scintillation crystals has been developed. This high granularity enables detailed imaging of the particle showers, improving both energy resolution and particle identification. The prototype's performance is evaluated through cosmic ray testing, providing valuable data for optimizing the final calorimeter design for VLAST.

Modeling of Core Loss Based on Machine Learning and Deep Learning

This article proposes a Mix Neural Network (MNN) based on CNN-FCNN for predicting magnetic loss of different materials. In traditional magnetic core loss models, empirical equations usually need to be regressed under the same external conditions. When the magnetic core material is different, it needs to be classified and discussed. If external factors increase, multiple models need to be proposed for classification and discussion, making the modeling process extremely cumbersome. And traditional empirical equations still has the problem of low accuracy, although various correction equations have been introduced later, the accuracy has always been unsatisfactory. By introducing machine learning and deep learning, it is possible to simultaneously solve prediction problems with low accuracy of empirical equations and complex conditions. Based on the MagNet database, through the training of the newly proposed MNN, it is found that a single model is sufficient to make predictions for at least four different materials under varying temperatures, frequencies, and waveforms, with accuracy far exceeding that of traditional models. At the same time, we also used three other machine learning and deep learning models (Random Forest, XGBoost, MLP-LSTM) for training, all of which had much higher accuracy than traditional models. On the basis of the predicted results, a hybrid model combining MNN and XGBoost was proposed, which predicted through weighting and found that the accuracy could continue to improve. This provides a solution for modeling magnetic core loss under different materials and operating modes.

Unfolding environmental $γ$ flux spectrum with portable CZT detector

Environmental $γ$-rays constitute a crucial source of background in various nuclear, particle and quantum physics experiments. To evaluate the flux rate and the spectrum of $γ$ background, we have developed a novel and straightforward approach to reconstruct the environmental $γ$ flux spectrum by applying a portable CZT $γ$ detector and iterative Bayesian unfolding, which possesses excellent transferability for broader applications. In this paper, the calibration and GEANT4 Monte-Carlo modeling of the CZT detector, the unfolding procedure as well as the uncertainty estimation are demonstrated in detail. The reconstructed spectrum reveals an environmental $γ$ flux intensity of $3.3\pm 0.9\times 10^{7}$~ (m$^2\cdot$sr$\cdot$hour)$^{-1}$ ranging from 73 to 3033~keV, along with characteristic peaks primarily arising from $^{232}$Th series, $^{238}$U series and $^{40}$K. We also give an instance of background rate evaluation with the unfolded spectrum for validation of the approach.

Energy correction based on fluorescence attenuation of DAMPE

The major scientific goals of DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) are to study cosmic-ray electrons (including positrons) and gamma rays from 5 GeV to 10 TeV and nuclei from Z = 1 to 26 up to 100 TeV. The deposited energy measured by the Bismuth Germanate Oxide (BGO) calorimeter of DAMPE is affected by fluorescence attenuation in BGO crystals that are 600 mm long. In this work, an in-orbit attenuation calibration method is reported, and energy correction of the sensitive detector unit of the BGO calorimeter is also presented.

Calibration and Status of the 3D Imaging Calorimeter of DAMPE for Cosmic Ray Physics on Orbit

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) developed in China was designed to search for evidence of dark matter particles by observing primary cosmic rays and gamma rays in the energy range from 5 GeV to 10 TeV. Since its launch in December 2015, a large quantity of data has been recorded. With the data set acquired during more than a year of operation in space, a precise time-dependent calibration for the energy measured by the BGO ECAL has been developed. In this report, the instrumentation and development of the BGO Electromagnetic Calorimeter (BGO ECAL) are briefly described. The calibration on orbit, including that of the pedestal, attenuation length, minimum ionizing particle peak, and dynode ratio, is discussed, and additional details about the calibration methods and performance in space are presented.

Temperature Dependence Calibration and Correction of the DAMPE BGO Electromagnetic Calorimeter

A BGO electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) is built for the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) mission. The effect of temperature on the BGO ECAL was investigated with a thermal vacuum experiment. The light output of a BGO crystal depends on temperature significantly. The temperature coefficient of each BGO crystal bar has been calibrated, and a correction method is also presented in this paper.

A study of energy correction for the electron beam data in the BGO ECAL of the DAMPE

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is an orbital experiment aiming at searching for dark matter indirectly by measuring the spectra of photons, electrons and positrons originating from deep space. The BGO electromagnetic calorimeter is one of the key sub-detectors of the DAMPE, which is designed for high energy measurement with a large dynamic range from 5 GeV to 10 TeV. In this paper, some methods for energy correction are discussed and tried, in order to reconstruct the primary energy of the incident electrons. Different methods are chosen for the appropriate energy ranges. The results of Geant4 simulation and beam test data (at CERN) are presented.
