Partial compositeness and baryon matrix elements on the lattice

Partial compositeness is a mechanism for the generation of fermion masses which replaces a direct Higgs coupling to the fermions by a linear mixing with heavy composite partners. We present the first calculation of the relevant matrix element in a lattice model which is very close to a candidate theory containing a composite Higgs boson and a partially composite top quark. Specifically, our model is an SU(4) gauge theory coupled to dynamical fermions in the fundamental and two-index antisymmetric (sextet) representations. The matrix element we obtain is small and hence our result disfavors the scenario of obtaining a realistic top mass in this model.

Radiative contribution to the composite-Higgs potential in a two-representation lattice model

Working in a two-representation lattice gauge theory that is close to a composite Higgs model, we calculate the low-energy constant CLR which controls the contribution of the electroweak gauge bosons to the Higgs potential. In QCD, the corresponding low-energy constant governs the mass splitting of the pion multiplet. Taking the continuum and chiral limits, we find that CLR, in units of the pseudoscalar decay constant, is roughly of the same size as its QCD counterpart.

The large-mass regime of confining but nearly conformal gauge theories

We apply a recently developed dilaton-pion effective field theory for asymptotically free gauge theories near the conformal window to the $SU(3)$ gauge theory with $N_f=8$ fermions in the fundamental representation. Numerical data for this theory suggest the existence of a large-mass regime, where the fermion mass is not small but nevertheless the effective theory is applicable because of the parametric proximity of the conformal window. In this regime, we find that the mass dependence of hadronic quantities is similar to that of a a mass-deformed conformal theory, so that distinguishing infrared conformality from confinement requires the study of subleading effects.

The large-mass regime of the dilaton-pion low-energy effective theory

Numerical data of the SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f=8$ fermions in the fundamental representation suggest the existence of a large-mass regime, where the fermion mass is not small relative to the confinement scale, but nevertheless the dilaton-pion low-energy theory is applicable thanks to the parametric proximity of the conformal window. In this regime, the leading hyperscaling relations are similar to those of a mass-deformed conformal theory, so that distinguishing infrared conformality from confinement requires the study of subleading effects. Assuming that the $N_f=8$ theory confines, we estimate how light the fermion mass should be to enter the small-mass regime, where the pions become much lighter than the dilatonic scalar meson.

Spectroscopy of SU(4) composite Higgs theory with two distinct fermion representations

We have simulated the SU(4) lattice gauge theory coupled to dynamical fermions in the fundamental and two-index antisymmetric (sextet) representations simultaneously. Such theories arise naturally in the context of composite Higgs models that include a partially composite top quark. We describe the low-lying meson spectrum of the theory and fit the pseudoscalar masses and decay constants to chiral perturbation theory. We infer as well the mass and decay constant of the Goldstone boson corresponding to the non-anomalous U(1) symmetry of the model. Our results are broadly consistent with large-Nc scaling and vector-meson dominance.

Effective potential in ultraviolet completions for composite Higgs models

We consider a class of composite Higgs models based on asymptotically free $SO(d)$ gauge theories with $d$ odd, with fermions in two irreducible representations, and in which the Higgs field arises as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson and the top quark is partially composite. The Nambu-Goldstone coset containing the Higgs field, or Higgs coset, is either $SU(4)/Sp(4)$ or $SU(5)/SO(5)$, whereas the top partners live in two-index representations of the relevant flavor group ($SU(4)$ or $SU(5)$). In both cases, there is a large number of terms in the most general four-fermion lagrangian describing the interaction of third-generation quarks with the top partners. We derive the top-induced effective potential for the Higgs coset together with the singlet pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with the non-anomalous axial symmetry, to leading order in the couplings between the third-generation quarks and the composite sector. We obtain expressions for the low-energy constants in terms of top-partner two-point functions. We revisit the effective potential of another composite Higgs model that we have studied previously, which is based on an $SU(4)$ gauge theory and provides a different realization of the $SU(5)/SO(5)$ coset. The top partners of this model live in the fundamental representation of $SU(5)$, and, as a result, the effective potential of this model is qualitatively different from the $SO(d)$ gauge theories. We also discuss the role of the isospin-triplet fields contained in the $SU(5)/SO(5)$ coset, and show that, without further constraints on the four-fermion couplings, an expectation value for the the Higgs field will trigger the subsequent condensation of an isospin-triplet field.

Finite-temperature phase structure of SU(4) gauge theory with multiple fermion representations

We investigate the phase structure of SU(4) gauge theory with the gauge field simultaneously coupled to two flavors of fermion in the fundamental representation and two flavors of fermion in the two-index antisymmetric representation. We find that the theory has only two phases, a low-temperature phase with both species of fermion confined and chirally broken, and a high-temperature phase with both species of fermion deconfined and chirally restored. The single phase transition in the theory appears to be first order, in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Baryon spectrum of SU(4) composite Higgs theory with two distinct fermion representations

We use lattice simulations to compute the baryon spectrum of SU(4) lattice gauge theory coupled to dynamical fermions in the fundamental and two-index antisymmetric (sextet) representations simultaneously. This model is closely related to a composite Higgs model in which the chimera baryon made up of fermions from both representations plays the role of a composite top-quark partner. The dependence of the baryon masses on each underlying fermion mass is found to be generally consistent with a quark-model description and large-Nc scaling. We combine our numerical results with experimental bounds on the scale of the new strong sector to derive a lower bound on the mass of the top partner.

Chiral Transition of SU(4) Gauge Theory with Fermions in Multiple Representations

We report preliminary results on the finite temperature behavior of SU(4) gauge theory with dynamical quarks in both the fundamental and two-index antisymmetric representations. This system is a candidate to present scale separation behavior, where fermions in different representations condense at different temperature or coupling scales. Our simulations, however, reveal a single finite-temperature phase transition at which both representations deconfine and exhibit chiral restoration. It appears to be strongly first order. We compare our results to previous single-representation simulations. We also describe a Pisarski-Wilczek stability analysis, which suggests that the transition should be first order.

Effective pion mass term and the trace anomaly

Recently, we developed an effective theory of pions and a light dilatonic meson for gauge theories with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry that are close to the conformal window. The pion mass term in this effective theory depends on an exponent $y$. We derive the transformation properties under dilatations of the renormalized fermion mass, and use this to rederive $y=3-γ_m^*$, where $γ_m^*$ is fixed-point value of the mass anomalous dimension at the sill of the conformal window. This value for $y$ is consistent with the trace anomaly of the underlying near-conformal gauge theory.

Towards Partial Compositeness on the Lattice: Baryons with Fermions in Multiple Representations

We describe our recent lattice study of SU(4) gauge theory with fermions in the fundamental and sextet representations. In this theory, a new type of baryon consists of quarks in both representations. The spectrum of these "chimera baryons" has a straightforward interpretation in terms of a non-relativistic quark model based on SU(4). Our results are particularly relevant to composite Higgs models in which the top quark is partially composite.

Effective field theory for pions and a dilatonic meson

Numerical simulations of QCD-like theories which are chirally broken but exhibit a very small beta function reveal a flavor-singlet scalar, or "dilatonic meson," which is much lighter than any other states except pions. We develop a systematic low-energy expansion for the pions and the dilatonic meson, in which the presence of the latter is attributed to an approximate scale symmetry. In order to justify the power counting we invoke the Veneziano limit, in which the number of flavors $N_f$ in the fundamental representation grows in proportion with the number of colors $N_c$, while the ratio $N_f/N_c$ is kept close to, but below, the critical value where the conformal window is entered.

Low-energy effective action for pions and a dilatonic meson

Numerical simulations of QCD-like theories in which the number of flavors is adjusted so that the beta function is very small, but confinement and chiral symmetry breaking nevertheless take place, appear to reveal the presence of a flavor-singlet scalar meson which can be as light as the pions. Because the breaking of dilatation symmetry, quantified by the beta function, is small relative to QCD, a possible explanation is that the scalar meson is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with the approximate dilatation symmetry. We use this observation to systematically develop a low-energy effective action that accounts for both the pions and the "dilatonic" scalar meson. In order to justify the power counting that controls the couplings of the dilatonic meson we invoke the Veneziano limit, in which the number of fundamental-representation flavors $N_f$ grows in proportion with the number of colors $N_c$, while the ratio $N_f/N_c$ is kept close to, but below, the critical value where the conformal window is entered.

One-loop Chiral Perturbation Theory with two fermion representations

We develop Chiral Perturbation Theory for chirally broken theories with fermions in two different representations of the gauge group. Any such theory has a non-anomalous singlet $U(1)_A$ symmetry, yielding an additional Nambu-Goldstone boson when spontaneously broken. We calculate the next-to-leading order corrections for the pseudoscalar masses and decay constants, which include the singlet Nambu-Goldstone boson, as well as for the two condensates. The results can be generalized to more than two representations.

One-loop anomalous dimension of top-partner hyperbaryons in a family of composite Higgs models

An important ingredient of many composite-Higgs scenarios is partial compositeness: a mass for the top quark is generated via mixing with baryonic operators of the same new strong dynamics that produces the composite Higgs particle. These baryonic operators are scale dependent. We construct these operators, and calculate their one-loop anomalous dimension, in a set of ultraviolet completions of the Standard Model proposed by Ferretti and Karateev.

Spectroscopy of SU(4) gauge theory with two flavors of sextet fermions

We present a first look at the spectroscopy of SU(4) gauge theory coupled to two flavors of Dirac fermions in the two-index antisymmetric representation, which is a real representation. We compute meson and diquark masses, the pseudoscalar and vector meson decay constants, and the masses of six-quark baryons. We make comparisons with large-Nc expectations.

Vacuum alignment and lattice artifacts: Wilson fermions

Confinement in asymptotically free gauge theories is accompanied by the spontaneous breaking of the global flavor symmetry. If a subgroup of the flavor symmetry group is coupled weakly to additional gauge fields, the vacuum state tends to align such that the gauged subgroup is unbroken. Independently, a lattice discretization of the continuum theory typically reduces the manifest flavor symmetry, and, in addition, can give rise to new lattice-artifact phases with spontaneously broken symmetries. Here, we study the interplay of these two phenomena for Wilson fermions, using chiral lagrangian techniques. We consider two examples: electromagnetic corrections to QCD, and a prototype composite-Higgs model.

Vacuum alignment and lattice artifacts: staggered fermions

In confining lattice gauge theories in which part of the flavor group is coupled weakly to additional gauge fields, both the dynamics of the weak gauge fields as well as lattice artifacts may have non-trivial effects on the orientation of the vacuum in flavor space. Here we discuss this issue for lattice gauge theories employing staggered fermions. Staggered fermions break flavor symmetries to a much smaller group on the lattice, and orientations in flavor space that are equivalent in the continuum may be distinct on the lattice. Assuming universality, we show that in the continuum limit the weakly gauged flavor symmetries are always vector-like, disproving a recent claim in the literature.
