Data-Efficient Language Modeling: From Frontier Advancement to Principle-Guided Model Improvement

Learning from limited text requires models to use context, generalize to new inputs, and retain useful capabilities. Qiushi Engine conducted a long-horizon, end-to-end autonomous research program on BabyLM 2026 Strict-Small, within 10 million corpus words and 100 million cumulative word presentations. Three stages connected frontier advancement, principle discovery, and principle-guided model improvement. Stage I combined compact restatements, budget reinvestment, and residual incremental learning to build a frontier model. Stage II found that exact repetition and aligned restatement produce different patterns of context use, depending on target relations and prediction windows. In controlled tasks, recovering familiar performance did not ensure that unseen inputs could still use learned computations. These findings support a testable data-efficient learning principle: organize experience around the contextual dependencies needed for prediction; separately design visible information, supervision, and preservation; test learning, generalization, and retention. Stage III retained source text, masked more local clues, supervised selected targets, and preserved predictions on ordinarily masked inputs. Two continuation seeds from the same parent outperformed ordinary continuation on the complete nine-metric aggregate. Overall rose from 42.02 to 42.25 across two generations; the second achieved the highest Overall in the public Strict-Small snapshot of 8 September 2026. Further studies addressed compression, relational anchors, shared representations, and measurement. Models are available on Hugging Face; code and research records accompany the GitHub repository. Together, these stages illustrate Research RSI: recursive self-improvement of the research process. Scientific understanding and method innovations change subsequent questions and designs; new experiments test and refine them.

Magnon-induced phononic Chern insulator

High-frequency artificial phononic crystals offer a low-loss platform compatible with on-chip integration, yet realizing Chern phononic phases at GHz frequencies remains challenging. Here, we propose a magnon-induced phononic Chern insulator in a honeycomb phononic crystal hybridized with ferromagnetic islands at the hexagon centers. A circularly polarized Kittel mode couples to the surrounding phonons with a phase winding, which breaks time-reversal symmetry and opens a full Chern gap. In the large-detuning regime, this mechanism leads to an effective Haldane-type phononic model with magnon-induced complex hopping. By tuning the magnon-phonon interaction, the full hybrid system accesses Chern phases with tunable Chern numbers |C|=1 and |C|=2. The predicted gaps can exceed realistic phonon and magnon linewidths, enabling their observation in GHz acoustic devices. Our work establishes chiral magnon--phonon hybridization as a route to magnetically reconfigurable topological phononics.

Causality Sum Rules in Conventional Scattering Matrices

Scattering matrices are the standard experimental and computational description of photonic and electromagnetic devices. Passivity is explicit in the conventional incoming-outgoing matrix, whereas causality sum rules are usually formulated only after transforming the response into auxiliary variables. Here we show that these rules can be written directly in the conventional scattering matrix by removing the time advance introduced by the reference domain. Using the earliest-arrival delay of each channel, we define a domain-delayed matrix that preserves real-frequency passivity while restoring the causal time origin. Under explicit analyticity, transparency, and regularity assumptions, this matrix becomes a Schur function, enabling a Cayley-Herglotz construction. The resulting projected and determinant bounds constrain coherent channel superpositions and aggregate multichannel loss. The framework recovers Rozanov's absorber limit and spherical-multipole sum rules, while extending causality bounds to measurable quantities including insertion loss, suppressed singular-value channels, and conditional lossless delay-bandwidth trade-offs. Our work directly connects fundamental causality theory with experimentally accessible scattering data. The initial theoretical route is autonomously explored by Qiushi Engine, an AI research system for open-ended scientific discovery, and subsequently verified, refined, and developed by the authors, demonstrating a hybrid AI-human discovery workflow.

Self-healing topological streams in space-time

Topological states are renowned for their robustness against perturbations. Recent advances have further introduced momentum-gap (or time) topology in time-varying media, enabling temporal topological states. However, existing studies for momentum-gap topology are largely confined to non-propagating interface states; their potential for wave transport, especially at moving boundaries, has yet to be realized. Here, we experimentally demonstrate topological streams in space-time: space-time topological edge states that propagate along a moving boundary in a dynamically modulated time-synthetic photonic lattice. These streams arise from the coexistence of energy-gap and momentum-gap topologies and break both spatial and temporal translation symmetries, conserving neither energy nor momentum. Remarkably, they reconstruct their wave profiles after strong localized spatiotemporal obstacles, enabled by an imaginary quasienergy gap and kinematic decoupling from radiative bulk channels. Our results establish a form of self-healing spatiotemporal non-Hermitian protection, showing that the temporal dimension can transform topology from pinned states and isolated events into robust, directional and self-restoring wave transport.

Agentic metasurface design with self-correcting language-model systems

Automated metasurface design is increasingly important, and recent advances in language-model systems are opening a route toward agentic optical design. Yet modern metasurface applications, from metalenses and holography to optical computing, require long design chains spanning modeling, simulation, coding, optimization and evaluation. These chains are error-prone, whereas existing language-model-based metasurface tools remain largely limited to simple objectives, predefined pipelines or language-to-layout generation. Here we introduce MetaDesigner, a self-correcting language-model system for agentic metasurface design. From a natural-language optical objective, MetaDesigner plans the design route, retrieves domain knowledge, invokes simulation and optimization tools, generates missing tool code and identifies errors through a dedicated Verifier. We demonstrate three tasks of increasing complexity: an RGB metalens with three independent focal spots, a six-plane full-color hologram with an average structural similarity index measure (SSIM) of 0.97, and an optoelectronic hybrid neural network for image style transfer. These tasks require 74, 136 and 90 reasoning steps, respectively, and the system self-corrects errors in frequency mapping, numerical aperture estimation, network-parameter counting and loss-function description. These results establish MetaDesigner as a self-correcting route to agentic metasurface design, where language-model systems can not only execute optical design tasks but also extend, inspect and repair the design process itself.

End-to-end autonomous scientific discovery on a real optical platform

Scientific research has long been human-led, driving new knowledge and transformative technologies through the continual revision of questions, methods and claims as evidence accumulates. Although large language model (LLM)-based agents are beginning to move beyond assisting predefined research workflows, none has yet demonstrated end-to-end autonomous discovery in a real physical system that produces a nontrivial result supported by experimental evidence. Here we introduce Qiushi Discovery Engine, an LLM-based agentic system for end-to-end autonomous scientific discovery on a real optical platform. Qiushi Engine combines nonlinear research phases, Meta-Trace memory and a dual-layer architecture to maintain adaptive and stable research trajectories across long-horizon investigations involving thousands of LLM-mediated reasoning, measurement and revision actions. It autonomously reproduces a published transmission-matrix experiment on a non-original platform and converts an abstract coherence-order theory into experimental observables, providing, to our knowledge, the first observation of this class of coherence-order structure. More importantly, in an open-ended study involving 145.9 million tokens, 3,242 LLM calls, 1,242 tool calls, 163 research notes and 44 scripts, Qiushi Engine proposes and experimentally validates optical bilinear interaction, a physical mechanism structurally analogous to a core operation in Transformer attention. This AI-discovered mechanism suggests a route towards high-speed, energy-efficient optical hardware for pairwise computation. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of an AI agentic system autonomously identifying and experimentally validating a nontrivial, previously unreported physical mechanism, marking a milestone for research-level autonomous agents.

Realizing anomalous Floquet non-Abelian band topology in photonic scattering networks

The concept of multi-gap topology has recently been shown to give rise to uncharted phases beyond conventional single-gap classifications. These phases relate to band nodes with non-Abelian quaternion charges and momentum-space braiding processes characterized by new invariants such as paradigmatic Euler class, phenomena that intrinsically require at least two spatial dimensions. Extending such phases into the non-equilibrium regime is predicted to unlock even richer multi-gap topologies beyond static settings, yet their experimental realization has remained elusive due to the stringent requirements on dimensionality, symmetry, and dynamical control. Here, we theoretically demonstrate and, for the first time, experimentally realize two-dimensional (2D) Floquet non-Abelian band topology in photonic scattering networks. Within this platform, we uncover a sequence of topological phenomena unique to 2D multi-gap systems far from equilibrium, including anomalous multi-gap phases interconnected by band nodes, Floquet Euler transfer, gapped phases with anomalous Dirac string configurations, and Floquet-induced non-Abelian braiding of band nodes. In addition, we observe Floquet-periodic anomalous edge states across multiple gaps, providing experimental signatures of these sought-after 2D multi-gap Floquet topological phases. Our results establish photonic scattering networks as a practical and versatile route to non-Abelian Floquet systems, opening avenues for dynamical topological physics with braiding capability and robust photonic functionalities.

EMO-R3: Reflective Reinforcement Learning for Emotional Reasoning in Multimodal Large Language Models

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have shown remarkable progress in visual reasoning and understanding tasks but still struggle to capture the complexity and subjectivity of human emotions. Existing approaches based on supervised fine-tuning often suffer from limited generalization and poor interpretability, while reinforcement learning methods such as Group Relative Policy Optimization fail to align with the intrinsic characteristics of emotional cognition. To address these challenges, we propose Reflective Reinforcement Learning for Emotional Reasoning (EMO-R3), a framework designed to enhance the emotional reasoning ability of MLLMs. Specifically, we introduce Structured Emotional Thinking to guide the model to perform step-by-step emotional reasoning in a structured and interpretable manner, and design a Reflective Emotional Reward that enables the model to re-evaluate its reasoning based on visual-text consistency and emotional coherence. Extensive experiments demonstrate that EMO-R3 significantly improves both the interpretability and emotional intelligence of MLLMs, achieving superior performance across multiple visual emotional understanding benchmarks.

Observation of Custodial Chiral Symmetry in Memristive Topological Insulators

The concept of custodial symmetry, a residual symmetry that protects physical observables from large quantum corrections, has been a cornerstone of high-energy physics, but its experimental observation has remained unexplored. Building on recent theoretical work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 097701 (2022)], we report the first experimental observation of classical analog of custodial chiral symmetry in a memristive Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) circuit. We provide direct experimental evidence for custodial symmetry through the measurement of the correction to the Lagrangian. This Lagrangian correction, which mimics a mass term in field theory, vanishes smoothly as the perturbation is reduced. We also demonstrate that topological edge states in the memristive SSH circuit remain localized at the boundary, protected by custodial chiral symmetry. This work opens new avenues for emulating field-theoretic symmetries and nonlinear dynamics in memristive platforms.

Magnetic-free terahertz nonreciprocity via temporal dissipative barriers

Terahertz (THz) nonreciprocal devices are essential for advancing future fundamental science, wireless communications, imaging, and sensing. Current THz nonreciprocal devices mostly rely on magnetic materials, which, however, suffer from large volume, operation under an external magnetic field, and low-temperature environment, rendering them poorly compatible with miniaturized developments. Here,we propose an unconventional method for achieving THz nonreciprocity free from magnetic materials. The scheme relies on a temporal dissipative barrier, a transient loss variation generated by photoexcited carriers, and the nonreciprocity arises from the distinct coupling behavior for different polarizations with the barrier. The isolation efficiency correlates with the temporal barrier width, resonant mode detuning, and the working frequency, and has been significantly enhanced by introducing a dark mode. We experimentally confirm our method in a THz optically active metasurface with wave-flow isolation exceeding 20 dB across a bandwidth greater than 0.4 THz. Theoretical predictions indicate peak isolation surpassing 60 dB, with experimental results achieving over 30 dB at 0.7 THz. Our approach unlocks the potential of miniaturized, integrated, magnetic-free THz nonreciprocal devices for various applications.

Unidirectional perfect absorption induced by chiral coupling in spin-momentum locked waveguide magnonics

Chiral coupling opens new avenues for controlling and exploiting light-matter interactions. We demonstrate that chiral coupling can be utilized to achieve unidirectional perfect absorption. In our experiments, chiral magnon-photon coupling is realized by coupling the magnon modes in yttrium iron garnet (YIG) spheres with spin-momentum-locked waveguide modes supported by spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs). These photon modes exhibit transverse spin, with the spin direction determined by the propagation direction. Due to the intrinsic spin properties of the magnon mode, it exclusively couples with microwaves traveling in one direction, effectively suppressing the reflection channel. Under the critical coupling condition, transmission is also eliminated, resulting in unidirectional perfect absorption. By incorporating additional YIG spheres, bidirectional and multi-frequency perfect absorption can be achieved. Our work introduces a novel platform for exploring and harnessing chiral light-matter interactions within spin-momentum locked devices, offering a paradigm for unidirectional signal processing and energy harvesting technologies.

Quantized decay charges in non-Hermitian networks characterized by directed graphs

Non-Hermitian physics has unveiled a realm of exotic phenomena absent in Hermitian systems, with the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) showcasing boundary-localized eigenstates driven by non-reciprocal interactions. Here, we introduce a new class of non-Hermitian systems exhibiting pure decay modes-eigenstates with pure, smooth exponential decay, devoid of the oscillatory wave patterns typical of traditional NHSE. Modeled as directed graphs with non-reciprocal hopping, these systems reveal quantized decay charges, defined as the sum of decay constants along edges at each node, offering a novel topological invariant. We derive universal conditions for these modes, enabling versatile configurations from one-dimensional rings, directed graphs with complicated connectivity, to higher-dimensional lattices. Experimental validation using microwave resonant circuits confirms the predicted pure decay profiles. This discovery paves the way for potential applications in photonics, signal processing, and beyond, harnessing the unique topological properties of non-Hermitian networks

A scalable and programmable optical neural network in a time-synthetic dimension

Programmable optical neural networks (ONNs) can offer high-throughput and energy-efficient solutions for accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) computing. However, existing ONN architectures, typically based on cascaded unitary transformations such as Mach-Zehnder interferometer meshes, face inherent scalability limitations due to spatial encoding, which causes optical components and system complexity to scale quadratically with network size. A promising solution to this challenge is the use of synthetic dimensions to enhance scalability, though experimental demonstration has remained scarce. Here, we present the first experimental demonstration of an all-optical, highly scalable, programmable ONN operating in a time-synthetic dimension. By implementing a time-cycle computation paradigm analogous to gate cycling in conventional spatial photonic circuits, our approach achieves a gate count surpassing that of state-of-the-art programmable photonic processors. Unlike conventional ONN architectures that rely on real-space wave interferences, our framework exploits time-reflection and time-refraction to perform computations, fundamentally eliminating backscattering errors through causality constraints. To bridge the gap between simulation and reality, we introduce an in-situ training framework that dynamically adapts to experimental errors, achieving performance exceeding traditional in silico learning paradigms. Our synthetic-dimension-based approach provides a compact, scalable, backscattering-free, and programmable neuromorphic computing architecture, advancing the potential for next-generation photonic AI systems.

Electric Field Control of Spin Orbit Coupling and Circular Photogalvanic Effect in a True Ferrielectric Crystal

Materials possessing long range ordering of magnetic spins or electric dipoles have been the focus of condensed matter research. Among them, ferri-systems with two sublattices of unequal/noncollinear spins or electric dipoles are expected to combine the properties of ferro- and antiferro-systems, but lack experimental observations in single phase materials. This is particularly true for the ferrielectric system, since the electric dipoles usually can be redefined to incorporate the two sublattices into one, making it indistinguishable from ferroelectric. This raises doubts about whether or not ferrielectricity can be considered as an independent ferroic order. Here we report the observation of true ferrielectric behaviors in a hybrid single crystal (MV)[SbBr5] (MV2+ = N,N'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium or methylviologen), where the two electric dipole sublattices switch asynchronously, thus cannot be reduced to ferroelectric by redefining the unit cell. Furthermore, the complex dipole configuration imparts circularly polarized light sensitivity to the system. An electric field can modulate the non-collinear dipole sublattices and even induce a transition from ferrielectric to ferroelectric state, thereby tuning the helicity-dependent photocurrent. This study opens a new paradigm for the study of true irreducible ferrielectricity (a new class of polar system) and provides an effective approach to the electric field control of spin-orbit coupling and circular photogalvanic effect.

Realization of Weyl elastic metamaterials with spin skyrmions

Topological elastic metamaterials provide a topologically robust way to manipulate the phononic energy and information beyond the conventional approaches. Among various topological elastic metamaterials, Weyl elastic metamaterials stand out, as they are unique to three dimensions and exhibit numerous intriguing phenomena and potential applications. To date, however, the realization of Weyl elastic metamaterials remains elusive, primarily due to the full-vectoral nature of elastic waves and the complicated couplings between polarizations, leading to complicated and tangled three-dimensional (3D) bandstructures that unfavorable for experimental demonstration. Here, we overcome the challenge and realize an ideal, 3D printed, all-metallic Weyl elastic metamaterial with low dissipation losses. Notably, the elastic spin of the excitations around the Weyl points exhibits skyrmion textures, a topologically stable structure in real space. Utilizing 3D laser vibrometry, we reveal the projection of the Weyl points, the Fermi arcs and the unique spin characteristics of the topological surface states. Our work extends the Weyl metamaterials to elastic waves and paves a topological way to robust manipulation of elastic waves in 3D space.

CODEMENV: Benchmarking Large Language Models on Code Migration

Large language models (LLMs) have shown remarkable capabilities across various software engineering tasks; however, their effectiveness in code migration, adapting code to run in different environments, remains insufficiently studied. In this work, we introduce CODEMENV: Code Migration Across Environment, a new benchmark specifically designed to assess LLMs' abilities in code migration scenarios. CODEMENV consists of 922 examples spanning 19 Python and Java packages, and covers three core tasks: (1) identifying functions incompatible with specific versions, (2) detecting changes in function definitions, and (3) adapting code to target environments. Experimental evaluation with seven LLMs on CODEMENV yields an average pass@1 rate of 26.50%, with GPT-4O achieving the highest score at 43.84%. Key findings include: (i) LLMs tend to be more proficient with newer function versions, which aids in migrating legacy code, and (ii) LLMs sometimes exhibit logical inconsistencies by identifying function changes irrelevant to the intended migration environment. The datasets are available at https://github.com/xdshen-ai/Benchmark-of-Code-Migration.

Observation of localization reversal and harmonic generation in nonlinear non-Hermitian skin effect

The interplay between band topology and material nonlinearity gives rise to a variety of novel phenomena, such as topological solitons and nonlinearity-induced topological phase transitions. However, most previous studies fall within the Hermitian regime, leaving the impact of nonlinearity on non-Hermitian topology seldom explored. Here, we investigate the effects of nonlinearity on the non-Hermitian skin effect, a well-known non-Hermitian phenomenon induced by the point-gap topology unique to non-Hermitian systems. Interestingly, we discover a nonlinearity-induced point-gap topological phase transition accompanied by a reversal of the skin mode localization, which is distinct from previous nonlinearity-induced line-gap topological phases. This phenomenon is experimentally demonstrated in a nonlinear microwave metamaterial, where electromagnetic waves are localized around one end of the sample under a low-intensity pump, whereas at a high-intensity pump, the waves are localized around the other end. Our results open a new route towards nonlinear topological physics in non-Hermitian systems and are promising for reconfigurable topological wave manipulation.
