PyGALAX: An Open-Source Python Toolkit for Advanced Explainable Geospatial Machine Learning

PyGALAX is a Python package for geospatial analysis that integrates automated machine learning (AutoML) and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) techniques to analyze spatial heterogeneity in both regression and classification tasks. It automatically selects and optimizes machine learning models for different geographic locations and contexts while maintaining interpretability through SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) analysis. PyGALAX builds upon and improves the GALAX framework (Geospatial Analysis Leveraging AutoML and eXplainable AI), which has proven to outperform traditional geographically weighted regression (GWR) methods. Critical enhancements in PyGALAX from the original GALAX framework include automatic bandwidth selection and flexible kernel function selection, providing greater flexibility and robustness for spatial modeling across diverse datasets and research questions. PyGALAX not only inherits all the functionalities of the original GALAX framework but also packages them into an accessible, reproducible, and easily deployable Python toolkit while providing additional options for spatial modeling. It effectively addresses spatial non-stationarity and generates transparent insights into complex spatial relationships at both global and local scales, making advanced geospatial machine learning methods accessible to researchers and practitioners in geography, urban planning, environmental science, and related fields.

An entropy-based measurement for understanding origin-destination trip distributions: a case study of New York City taxis

A comprehensive understanding of human mobility patterns in urban areas is essential for urban development and transportation planning. In this study, we create entropy-based measurements to capture the geographical distribution diversity of trip origins and destinations. Specifically, we develop origin-entropy and destination-entropy based on taxi and ride-sharing trip records. The origin-entropy for a given zone accounts for all the trips that originate from this zone and calculates the level of geographical distribution diversity of these trips destinations. Likewise, the destination-entropy for a given zone considers all the trips that end in this zone and calculates the level of geographical distribution diversity of these trips origins. Furthermore, we have created an interactive geovisualization that enables researchers to delve into and juxtapose the spatial and temporal dynamics of origin and destination entropy, in conjunction with trip counts for both origins and destinations. Results indicate that entropy-based measurements effectively capture shifts in the diversity of trips geographical origins and destinations, reflecting changes in travel decisions due to major events like the COVID-19 pandemic. These measurements, alongside trip counts, offer a more comprehensive understanding of urban human flows.

Modeling Inter-Country Connection from Geotagged News Reports: A Time-Series Analysis

The development of theories and techniques for big data analytics offers tremendous flexibility for investigating large-scale events and patterns that emerge over space and time. In this research, we utilize a unique open-access dataset "The Global Data on Events, Location and Tone" (GDELT) to model the image of China in mass media, specifically, how China has related to the rest of the world and how this connection has evolved upon time based on an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model. The results of this research contribute both in methodological and empirical perspectives: We examined the effectiveness of time series models in predicting trends in long-term mass media data. In addition, we identified various types of connection strength patterns between China and its top 15 related countries. This study generates valuable input to interpret China's diplomatic and regional relations based on mass media data, as well as providing methodological references for investigating international relations in other countries and regions in the big data era.
