Unveiling non-Abelian statistics of vortex Majorana bound states in iron-based superconductors using fermionic modes

Motivated by the recent experiments that reported the discovery of vortex Majorana bound states (vMBSs) in iron-based superconductors, we establish a portable scheme to unveil the non-Abelian statistics of vMBSs using normal fermionic modes. The unique non-Abelian statistics of vMBSs is characterized by the charge flip signal of the fermions that can be easily read out through the charge sensing measurement. In particular, the charge flip signal will be significantly suppressed for strong hybridized vMBSs or trivial vortex modes, which efficiently identifies genuine vMBSs. To eliminate the error induced by the unnecessary dynamical evolution of the fermionic modes, we further propose a correction strategy by continually reversing the energy of the fermions, reminiscent of the quantum Zeno effect. Finally, we establish a feasible protocol to perform non-Abelian braiding operations on vMBSs.

Minimal setup for non-Abelian braiding of Majorana zero modes

Braiding Majorana zero modes (MZMs) is the key procedure toward topological quantum computation. However, the complexity of the braiding manipulation hinders its experimental realization. Here we propose an experimental setup composing of MZMs and a quantum dot state which can substantially simplify the braiding protocol of MZMs. Such braiding scheme, which corresponds to a specific closed loop in the parameter space, is quite universal and can be realized in various platforms. Moreover, the braiding results can be directly measured and manifested through electric current, which provides a simple and novel way to detect the non-Abelian statistics of MZMs.

Chiral Interface States and Related Quantized Transport in Disordered Chern Insulators

In this Letter, we study an Anderson-localization-induced quantized transport in disordered Chern insulators (CIs). By investigating the disordered CIs with a step potential, we find that the chiral interface states emerge along the interfaces of the step potential, and the energy range for such quantized transport can be manipulated through the potential strength. Furthermore, numerical simulations on cases with a multi-step potential demonstrate that such chiral state can be spatially shifted by varying the Fermi energy, and the energy window for quantized transport is greatly enlarged. Experimentally, such chiral interface states can be realized by imposing transverse electric field, in which the energy window for quantized transport is much broader than the intrinsic band gap of the corresponding CI. These phenomena are quite universal for disordered CIs due to the direct phase transition between the CI and the normal insulator.

PuzzleFlex: kinematic motion of chains with loose joints

This paper presents a method of computing free motions of a planar assembly of rigid bodies connected by loose joints. Joints are modeled using local distance constraints, which are then linearized with respect to configuration space velocities, yielding a linear programming formulation that allows analysis of systems with thousands of rigid bodies. Potential applications include analysis of collections of modular robots, structural stability perturbation analysis, tolerance analysis for mechanical systems, and formation control of mobile robots.

Non-Abelian statistics of Majorana zero modes in the presence of an Andreev bound state

Braiding Majorana zero modes (MZMs) is the key procedure toward topological quantum computation. We show such braiding can be well performed in a parallel semiconductor-superconductor nanowire structure. Considering the fact that the low-energy Andreev bound states (ABSs) usually mix with the MZMs in the present set-up, we further investigate the braiding properties of MZMs when an ABS is presented. Our numerical simulation suggests that ABS can be regarded as a pair of weakly coupled MZMs. The dynamical hybridization of MZMs plus the non-Abelian braiding of MZMs would induce an arbitrary rotation on the Bloch sphere of a single qubit. Remarkably, such rotation is manipulable since the rotation parameters could be individually modulated. Thus, the dynamic evolution can be eliminated and the non-Abelian braiding statistics, independent of the braiding time, retrieves.

Finite-thickness effect and spin polarization of the even-denominator fractional quantum Hall states

The spin-polarized even-denominator fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states in the second Landau level (LL), i.e. 5/2 and 7/2, may possess novel quasi-particle excitations obeying non-Abelian statistics. However, the spin polarization of the 7/2 FQH state has not been investigated experimentally and the spin polarization of the 5/2 FQH state from tilted field experiments remains controversial. Using a piezo-driven sample rotator with the lowest electron temperature down to 25 mK, we studied the energy gap of the even-denominator FQH states in the second LL by precise control of the tilted angles with a resolution less than 0.1°. We observed two different energy gap dependences on the in-plane magnetic field for 5/2, 7/2, other FQH states (7/3 and 8/3) in the second LL and reentrant integer quantum Hall (RIQH) states in the third LL. Though the transition fields vary from states, their corresponding in-plane magnetic lengths are comparable to the quantum well thickness of the sample, which may result from the influence of the finite-thickness effect. At low in-plane magnetic fields, before the conjectured finite-thickness effect starts to dominate, the energy gaps of both 5/2 and 7/2 states show a non-decreasing behavior, supporting spin-polarized ground states. Our results also suggest that the 7/3, 8/3 FQH states, and the RIQH states in the third LL are spin-polarized or partially spin-polarized.

Non-Abelian braiding of Dirac fermionic modes using topological corner states in higher-order topological insulator

We numerically demonstrate that the topological corner states residing in the corners of higher-order topological insulator possess non-Abelian braiding properties. Such topological corner states are Dirac fermionic modes other than Majorana zero-modes. We claim that Dirac fermionic modes protected by nontrivial topology also support non-Abelian braiding. An analytical description on such non-Abelian braiding is conducted based on the vortex-induced Dirac-type fermionic modes. The braiding operator for Dirac fermionic modes is also analytically derivated and compared with the Majorana zero-modes. Experimentally, such non-Abelian braiding operation on Dirac fermionic modes is proposed to be testified through topological electric circuit.

3/2 Fractional Quantum Hall Plateau in Confined Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

Even-denominator fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, such as 5/2 and 7/2, have been well known in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) for decades and are still investigated as candidates of non-Abelian statistics. In this paper, we present the observation of a 3/2 FQH plateau in a single-layer 2DEG with lateral confinement at a bulk filling factor of 5/3. The 3/2 FQH plateau is quantized at (h/e^2 )/(3/2) within 0.02%, and can survive up to 300 mK. This even-denominator FQH plateau may imply intriguing edge structure and excitation in FQH system with lateral confinement. The observations in this work demonstrate that understanding the effect of the lateral confinement on the many-body system is critical in the pursuit of important theoretical proposals involving edge physics, such as the demonstration of non-Abelian statistics and the realization of braiding for fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Flux-induced Topological Superconductor in Planar Josephson Junction

A planar Josephson junction with a normal metal attached on its top surface will form a hollow nanowire structure due to its three dimensional nature. In such hollow nanowire structure, the magnetic flux induced by a small magnetic field (about 0.01T) will tune the system into topologically non-trivial phase and therefore two Majorana zero-modes will form at the ends of the nanowire. Through tuning the chemical potential of the normal metal, the topologically non-trivial phase can be obtained for almost all energy within the band. Furthermore, the system can be conveniently tuned between the topologically trivial and non-trivial phases via the phase difference between the superconductors. Such device, manipulable through flux, can be conveniently fabricated into desired 2D networks. Finally, we also propose a cross-shaped junction realizing the braiding of Majorana zero-modes through manipulating the phase differences.

Gapped Topological Kink States and Topological Corner States in Graphene

Based on the tight-binding model calculations and photonic experimental visualization on graphene, we report the domain-wall-induced gapped topological kink states and topological corner states. In graphene, domain walls with gapless topological kink states could be induced either by sublattice symmetry breaking or by lattice deformation. We find that the coexistence of these two mechanisms will induce domain walls with gapped topological kink states. Significantly, the intersection of these two types of domain wall gives rise to topological corner state localized at the crossing point. Through the manipulation of domain walls, we show graphene not only a versatile platform supporting multiple topological corner modes in a controlled manner, but also possessing promising applications such as fabricating topological quantum dots composed of gapped topological kink states and topological corner states.

Double-frequency Aharonov-Bohm effect and non-Abelian braiding properties of Jackiw-Rebbi zero-mode

Ever since its first proposal in 1976, Jackiw-Rebbi zero-mode has been drawing extensive attention for its charming properties including charge fractionalization, topologically protected zero-energy and possible non-Abelian statistics. We investigate these properties through the Jackiw-Rebbi zero-modes in quantum spin Hall insulator. Though charge fractionalization is not manifested, Jackiw-Rebbi zero-mode's zero-energy nature leads to a double-frequency Aharonov-Bohm effect, implying that it can be viewed as a special case of Majorana zero-mode breaking particle-hole symmetry. Such relation is strengthened since Jackiw-Rebbi zero-modes also exhibit non-Abelian braiding properties in the absence of superconductivity, and the symmetry-protected degeneracy of both Jackiw-Rebbi and Majorana zero-modes is proved to be equally important as the topological gap for their non-Abelian statistics.

Stability of the $N = 2$ bubble states in Corbino geometry under a tilted field

We measured the activation energy gap of the N = 2 bubble states using tilted-field technique in two GaAs/AlGaAs samples with Corbino geometry, and observed monotonically decreasing energy gaps with the increasing total magnetic field. The observed tilt angle dependence is discussed based on magneto-orbital coupling and finite-size effect. We also found a bubble state at an uncommon filling factor of 4.67, with an unanticipated energy gap of up to 5.35 K and opposite in-plane field dependence.

Global Phase Diagram of Disordered Type-II Weyl Semimetals

With electron and hole pockets touching at the Weyl node, type-II Weyl semimetal is a newly proposed topological state distinct from its type-I cousin. We numerically study the localization effect for tilted type-I as well as type-II Weyl semimetals and give the global phase diagram. For dis- ordered type-I Weyl semimetal, an intermediate three-dimensional quantum anomalous Hall phase is confirmed between Weyl semimetal phase and diffusive metal phase. However, this intermediate phase is absent for disordered type-II Weyl semimetal. Besides, near the Weyl nodes, comparing to its type-I cousin, type-II Weyl semimetal possesses even larger ratio between the transport lifetime along the direction of tilt and the quantum lifetime. Near the phase boundary between the type-I and the type-II Weyl semimetals, infinitesimal disorder will induce an insulating phase so that in this region, the concept of Weyl semimetal is meaningless for real materials.
