Density Matrix Renormalization Group with Tensor Processing Units

Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) are integrated circuits specifically built to accelerate and scale up machine learning workloads. They can perform fast distributed matrix multiplications and therefore be repurposed for other computationally intensive tasks. In this work we demonstrate the use of TPUs for accelerating and scaling up the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), a powerful numerical approach to compute the ground state of a local quantum many-body Hamiltonian. The cost of DMRG scales with system size $N$ as $O(ND^3)$, where the so-called bond dimension $D$ regulates how expressive the underlying matrix product state (MPS) variational ansatz is. We consider lattice models in two spatial dimensions, with square lattices of size $10\times 10$ (free fermions) and $20\times 20$ (transverse field Ising model), for which the required MPS bond dimension is known to scale at least as $\exp(\sqrt{N})$. Using half of a TPU v3 pod (namely $1,\!024$ TPU v3 cores) we reached an unprecedentedly large bond dimension $D = 2^{16} = 65,\!536$, for which optimizing a single MPS tensor took about 2 minutes.

Operator fusion from wavefunction overlaps: Universal finite-size corrections and application to Haagerup model

Given a critical quantum spin chain described by a conformal field theory (CFT) at long distances, it is crucial to understand the universal conformal data. One most important ingredient is the operator product expansion (OPE) coefficients, which describe how operators fuse into each other. It has been proposed in [Zou, Vidal, Phys. Rev. B 105, 125125] that the OPE coefficients can be computed from overlaps of low-energy wavefunctions of the spin chain. In this work, we establish that all conformal data including central charge, conformal dimensions, and OPE coefficients are encoded in the wavefunction overlaps, with universal finite-size corrections that depend on the operator content of the cyclic orbifold CFT. Thus this method allows us to numerically compute all the conformal data based solely on the low-energy eigenstates. The predictions are verified in the Ising and XXZ model. As an application, we study the recently proposed Haagerup model built from the Haagerup fusion category. We find that the CFT has central charge $c \approx 2.1$ and the lowest spin-$1$ operator in the twisted sector has scaling dimension $1 < Δ_J \leq 1.4$.

Differentiable Programming of Isometric Tensor Networks

Differentiable programming is a new programming paradigm which enables large scale optimization through automatic calculation of gradients also known as auto-differentiation. This concept emerges from deep learning, and has also been generalized to tensor network optimizations. Here, we extend the differentiable programming to tensor networks with isometric constraints with applications to multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) and tensor network renormalization (TNR). By introducing several gradient-based optimization methods for the isometric tensor network and comparing with Evenbly-Vidal method, we show that auto-differentiation has a better performance for both stability and accuracy. We numerically tested our methods on 1D critical quantum Ising spin chain and 2D classical Ising model. We calculate the ground state energy for the 1D quantum model and internal energy for the classical model, and scaling dimensions of scaling operators and find they all agree with the theory well.

A universal tripartite entanglement signature of ungappable edge states

Gapped two-dimensional topological phases can feature ungappable edge states which are robust even in the absence of protecting symmetries. In this work we show that a multipartite entanglement measure recently proposed in the context of holography, the Markov gap, provides a universal diagnostic of ungappable edge states. Defined as a difference of the reflected entropy and mutual information $h(A:B) = S_R(A:B) - I(A:B)$ between two parties, we argue that for $A,B$ being adjacent subregions in the bulk, $h=\frac{c_+}{3}\log 2$, where $c_+$ is the minimal total central charge of the boundary theory. As evidence, we prove that $h=0$ for string-net models, and numerically verify that $h=\frac{|C|}{3}\log 2$ for a Chern-$C$ insulator. Our work establishes a unique bulk entanglement criteria for the presence of a conformal field theory on the boundary.

Multi-boundary generalization of thermofield double states and their realization in critical quantum spin chains

We propose a multi-boundary generalization of thermofield double states (TFD) of a two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) and show, through a conformal map to the complex plane, that they are closely related to multi-point correlation functions. We then also describe how to approximately realize these multi-boundary TFD states numerically on the lattice, starting from a critical quantum spin chain Hamiltonian. In addition, finite size corrections on the lattice are seen to be significantly reduced by the use of \textit{smoothers} -- numerically optimized unitary transformations that locally re-arrange the quantum spin degrees of freedom. One merit of the spin chain realization is that it allows us to probe the properties of the proposed multi-boundary TFD states through numerical experiments, including the characterization of their entanglement structure. As an illustration, we explicitly construct generalized TFD states with three and four boundaries for the Ising CFT and compute entanglement quantities using novel free fermion techniques. We find ranges of parameters where their multipartite entanglement is significant or negligible.

Universal information of critical quantum spin chains from wavefunction overlaps

Given a critical quantum spin chain, we show how universal information about its quantum critical point can be extracted from wavefunction overlaps. More specifically, we consider overlap between low-energy eigenstates of the spin chain Hamiltonian with different boundary conditions, namely periodic boundary conditions and open boundary conditions. We show that such overlaps decay polynomially with the system size, where the exponent only depends on the central charge. Furthermore, the bulk-to-boundary operator product expansion (OPE) coefficients can be extracted from the overlaps involving excited states. We illustrate the proposal with the Ising model and the three-state Potts model.

Universal tripartite entanglement in one-dimensional many-body systems

Motivated by conjectures in holography relating the entanglement of purification and reflected entropy to the entanglement wedge cross-section, we introduce two related non-negative measures of tripartite entanglement $g$ and $h$. We prove structure theorems which show that states with nonzero $g$ or $h$ have nontrivial tripartite entanglement. We then establish that in 1D these tripartite entanglement measures are universal quantities that depend only on the emergent low-energy theory. For a gapped system, we argue that either $g\neq 0$ and $h=0$ or $g=h=0$, depending on whether the ground state has long-range order. For a critical system, we develop a numerical algorithm for computing $g$ and $h$ from a lattice model. We compute $g$ and $h$ for various CFTs and show that $h$ depends only on the central charge whereas $g$ depends on the whole operator content.

Emergence of conformal symmetry in quantum spin chains: anti-periodic boundary conditions and supersymmetry

Universal properties of a critical quantum spin chain are encoded in the underlying conformal field theory (CFT). This underlying CFT is fully characterized by its conformal data. We propose a method to extract the conformal data from a critical quantum spin chain with both periodic and anti-periodic boundary conditions (PBC and APBC) based on low-energy eigenstates, generalizing previous work on spin chains with only PBC. First, scaling dimensions and conformal spins are extracted from the energies and momenta of the eigenstates. Second, the Koo-Saleur formula of lattice Virasoro generators is generalized to APBC and used to identify conformal towers. Third, local operators and string operators on the lattice are identified with CFT operators with PBC and APBC, respectively. Finally, operator product expansion coefficients are extracted by computing matrix elements of lattice primary operators in the low-energy subspaces with PBC and APBC. To go beyond exact diagonalization, tensor network methods based on periodic uniform matrix product states are used. We illustrate our approach with critical and tricritical Ising quantum spin chains. In the latter case, we propose lattice operators that correspond to supervirasoro generators and verify their action on low-energy eigenstates. In this way we explore the emergence of superconformal symmetry in the quantum spin chain.

Magic entanglement renormalization for quantum fields

Continuous tensor networks are variational wavefunctions proposed in recent years to efficiently simulate quantum field theories (QFTs). Prominent examples include the continuous matrix product state (cMPS) and the continuous multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (cMERA). While the cMPS can approximate ground states of a class of QFT Hamiltonians that are both local and interacting, cMERA is only well-understood for QFTs that are quasi-local and non-interacting. In this paper we propose the magic cMERA, a concrete realization of cMERA for a free boson QFT that simultaneously satisfies four remarkable properties: (i) it is the exact ground state of a strictly local Hamiltonian; (ii) in the massless case, its spectrum of scaling operators is exactly soluble in real space; (iii) it has the short-distance structure of a cMPS; (iv) it is generated by a quasi-local entangler that can be written as a continuous matrix product operator. None of these properties is fulfilled by previous cMERA proposals. Properties (iii)-(iv) establish a firm connection between cMERA and cMPS wavefunctionals, opening the path to applying powerful cMPS numerical techniques, valid for interacting QFTs, also to cMERA calculations.

TensorNetwork: A Library for Physics and Machine Learning

TensorNetwork is an open source library for implementing tensor network algorithms. Tensor networks are sparse data structures originally designed for simulating quantum many-body physics, but are currently also applied in a number of other research areas, including machine learning. We demonstrate the use of the API with applications both physics and machine learning, with details appearing in companion papers.

Conformal data and renormalization group flow in critical quantum spin chains using periodic uniform matrix product states

We establish that a Bloch-state ansatz based on periodic uniform Matrix Product States (puMPS), originally designed to capture single-quasiparticle excitations in gapped systems, is in fact capable of accurately approximating all low-energy eigenstates of critical quantum spin chains on the circle. When combined with the methods of [Milsted, Vidal, Phys. Rev. B 96 245105] based on the Koo-Saleur formula, puMPS Bloch states can then be used to identify each low-energy eigenstate of a chain made of up to hundreds of spins with its corresponding scaling operator in the emergent conformal field theory (CFT). This enables the following two tasks, that we demonstrate using the quantum Ising model and a recently proposed generalization thereof due to O'Brien and Fendley [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 206403]. (i) From the spectrum of low energies and momenta we extract conformal data (specifying the emergent CFT) with unprecedented numerical accuracy. (ii) By changing the lattice size, we investigate nonperturbatively the RG flow of the low-energy spectrum between two CFTs. In our example, where the flow is from the Tri-Critical Ising CFT to the Ising CFT, we obtain excellent agreement with an analytical result [Klassen and Melzer, Nucl. Phys. B 370 511] conjectured to describe the flow of the first spectral gap directly in the continuum.

Conformal fields and operator product expansion in critical quantum spin chains

We propose a variational method for identifying lattice operators in a critical quantum spin chain with scaling operators in the underlying conformal field theory (CFT). In particular, this allows us to build a lattice version of the primary operators of the CFT, from which we can numerically estimate the operator product expansion coefficients $C_{αβγ}^{\textrm{ CFT}}$. We demonstrate the approach with the critical Ising quantum spin chain.

Half-width of local spectral density of states given by width of nonperturbative parts of eigenfunctions: The Wigner-band-matrix model

It is shown that, for a Hamiltonian with a band structure, the half width of local spectral density of states, or strength function, is closely related to the width of the nonperturbative (NPT) parts of energy eigenfunctions. In the Wigner-band random-matrix model, making use of a generalized Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory, we derive analytical expressions for the width of the NPT parts under weak and strong perturbation. An iterative algorithm is given, by which the NPT widths can be computed efficiently, and is used in numerical test of the analytical predictions.
