Channel Estimation for XL-MIMO Systems with Decentralized Baseband Processing: Integrating Local Reconstruction with Global Refinement

In this paper, we investigate the channel estimation problem for extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems with a hybrid analog-digital architecture, implemented within a decentralized baseband processing (DBP) framework with a star topology. Existing centralized and fully decentralized channel estimation methods face limitations due to excessive computational complexity or degraded performance. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel two-stage channel estimation scheme that integrates local sparse reconstruction with global fusion and refinement. Specifically, in the first stage, by exploiting the sparsity of channels in the angular-delay domain, the local reconstruction task is formulated as a sparse signal recovery problem. To solve it, we develop a graph neural networks-enhanced sparse Bayesian learning (SBL-GNNs) algorithm, which effectively captures dependencies among channel coefficients, significantly improving estimation accuracy. In the second stage, the local estimates from the local processing units (LPUs) are aligned into a global angular domain for fusion at the central processing unit (CPU). Based on the aggregated observations, the channel refinement is modeled as a Bayesian denoising problem. To efficiently solve it, we devise a variational message passing algorithm that incorporates a Markov chain-based hierarchical sparse prior, effectively leveraging both the sparsity and the correlations of the channels in the global angular-delay domain. Simulation results validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed SBL-GNNs algorithm over existing methods, demonstrating improved estimation performance and reduced computational complexity.

Spatial Bandwidth of Bilateral Near-Field Channels for Linear Large-Scale Antenna Array System

This paper analyzes the spatial bandwidth of line-of-sight (LoS) channels in massive MIMO systems. For the linear large-scale antenna arrays (LSAA) of transceivers placed in random locations in 3D space, a simple but accurate closed-form expression is derived to characterize the spatial bandwidth. Subsequent analysis of the LSAA's spatial bandwidth properties is also provided, leading to the formulation of an approximate expression for the effective degrees of freedom (EDoF) of bilateral near-field channels. Interestingly, as proved in this work, when the transmit and receive arrays are coplanar, with the receive array positioned perpendicular to the axis joining the centroids of the transmit and receive arrays, the EDoF of the LoS channel is found to be approximately maximized.

Paving the Way to 6G: Outage Probability Analysis for FAS-ARIS Systems

In this paper, we pave the way to six-generation (6G) by investigating the outage probability (OP) of fluid antenna system (FAS)-active reconfigurable intelligent surface (ARIS) communication systems. We consider a FAS-ARIS setup consisting of a base station (BS) with a single fixed-position antenna and a receiver equipped with a fluid antenna (FA). Utilizing the block-correlation model, we derive a closed-form expression for the OP. Our analysis, supported by numerical results, confirms the accuracy and effectiveness of the derivation. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that the FAS-ARIS system significantly outperforms other configurations in terms of OP, highlighting its potential to enhance communication performance and reliability in future 6G networks.

Revisiting XL-MIMO Channel Estimation: When Dual-Wideband Effects Meet Near Field

The deployment of extremely large antenna arrays (ELAAs) in extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems introduces significant near-field effects, such as spherical wavefront propagation and spatially non-stationary (SnS) properties. When combined with the dual-wideband effects inherent to wideband systems, these phenomena fundamentally alter the channel's sparsity patterns in the angular-delay domain, rendering existing estimation methods insufficient. To address these challenges, this paper reconsiders the channel estimation problem for wideband XL-MIMO systems. Leveraging the spatial-chirp property of array responses, we first quantitatively characterize the angular-delay domain sparsity of wideband XL-MIMO channels, revealing both global block sparsity and local common-delay sparsity. To effectively capture this structured sparsity, we then propose a novel column-wise hierarchical prior model that integrates a precision sharing mechanism and a Markov random field (MRF) structure. Building on this prior model, the channel estimation task is formulated as a multiple measurement vector (MMV)-based Bayesian inference problem. Tailored to the complex factor graph induced by this hierarchical prior, we develop a MMV-based hybrid message passing (MMV-HMP) algorithm. This algorithm performs message updates along the edges of the factor graph, and selectively applies either the variational message passing (VMP) or sum-product (SP) rules, depending on the factor-node structure and message tractability. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed column-wise hierarchical prior model through ablation studies and demonstrate that the MMV-HMP algorithm, while maintaining moderate computational complexity, consistently outperforms existing baselines which fail to capture the structured sparsity of wideband XL-MIMO channels.

RIS-Aided Localization Algorithm and Analysis: Tackling Non-Gaussian Angle Estimation Errors

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided localization systems are increasingly recognized for enhancing accuracy in internet of things (IoT) networks. However, prevailing studies tend to either assume a Gaussian distribution for angle estimation error (AEE) or directly neglect the impact of the AEE, overlooking its non-Gaussian nature in real-world scenarios, particularly with diverse estimation methods (e.g., 2D-DFT algorithm). Addressing this oversight, this paper explores the design and performance analysis of RIS-aided localization systems, specifically tackling non-Gaussian AEE. We adopt the classical two-step three-dimensional (3D) localization scheme to determine the position of mobile user (MU). Initially, we estimate angles of arrival (AoAs) and time differences of arrival (TDoAs) at the RIS using different methods, resulting in non-Gaussian and Gaussian errors, respectively. Subsequently, to accommodate the non-Gaussian nature of AoAs errors and the Gaussian character of TDoA errors, we design a multiple weighted least squares (mWLS) algorithm to accurately localize MU. Besides, our research also includes a unique bias analysis for evaluating the performance of the proposed localization algorithm under both Gaussian and non-Gaussian errors. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of both the proposed mWLS algorithm and the bias analysis methodology.

Spatially Non-Stationary XL-MIMO Channel Estimation: A Three-Layer Generalized Approximate Message Passing Method

In this paper, channel estimation problem for extremely large-scale multi-input multi-output (XL-MIMO) systems is investigated with the considerations of the spherical wavefront effect and the spatially non-stationary (SnS) property. Due to the diversities of SnS characteristics among different propagation paths, the concurrent channel estimation of multiple paths becomes intractable. To address this challenge, we propose a two-phase channel estimation scheme. In the first phase, the angles of departure (AoDs) on the user side are estimated, and a carefully designed pilot transmission scheme enables the decomposition of the received signal from different paths. In the second phase, the subchannel estimation corresponding to different paths is formulated as a three-layer Bayesian inference problem. Specifically, the first layer captures block sparsity in the angular domain, the second layer promotes SnS property in the antenna domain, and the third layer decouples the subchannels from the observed signals. To efficiently facilitate Bayesian inference, we propose a novel three-layer generalized approximate message passing (TL-GAMP) algorithm based on structured variational massage passing and belief propagation rules. Simulation results validate the convergence and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, showcasing its robustness to different channel scenarios.

Joint User Scheduling and Computing Resource Allocation Optimization in Asynchronous Mobile Edge Computing Networks

In this paper, the problem of joint user scheduling and computing resource allocation in asynchronous mobile edge computing (MEC) networks is studied. In such networks, edge devices will offload their computational tasks to an MEC server, using the energy they harvest from this server. To get their tasks processed on time using the harvested energy, edge devices will strategically schedule their task offloading, and compete for the computational resource at the MEC server. Then, the MEC server will execute these tasks asynchronously based on the arrival of the tasks. This joint user scheduling, time and computation resource allocation problem is posed as an optimization framework whose goal is to find the optimal scheduling and allocation strategy that minimizes the energy consumption of these mobile computing tasks. To solve this mixed-integer non-linear programming problem, the general benders decomposition method is adopted which decomposes the original problem into a primal problem and a master problem. Specifically, the primal problem is related to computation resource and time slot allocation, of which the optimal closed-form solution is obtained. The master problem regarding discrete user scheduling variables is constructed by adding optimality cuts or feasibility cuts according to whether the primal problem is feasible, which is a standard mixed-integer linear programming problem and can be efficiently solved. By iteratively solving the primal problem and master problem, the optimal scheduling and resource allocation scheme is obtained. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed asynchronous computing framework reduces 87.17% energy consumption compared with conventional synchronous computing counterpart.

Joint Visibility Region and Channel Estimation for Extremely Large-scale MIMO Systems

In this work, we investigate the joint visibility region (VR) detection and channel estimation (CE) problem for extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems considering both the spherical wavefront effect and spatial non-stationary (SnS) property. Unlike existing SnS CE methods that rely on the statistical characteristics of channels in the spatial or delay domain, we propose an approach that simultaneously exploits the antenna-domain spatial correlation and the wavenumber-domain sparsity of SnS channels. To this end, we introduce a two-stage VR detection and CE scheme. In the first stage, the belief regarding the visibility of antennas is obtained through a VR detection-oriented message passing (VRDO-MP) scheme, which fully exploits the spatial correlation among adjacent antenna elements. In the second stage, leveraging the VR information and wavenumber-domain sparsity, we accurately estimate the SnS channel employing the belief-based orthogonal matching pursuit (BB-OMP) method. Simulations show that the proposed algorithms lead to a significant enhancement in VR detection and CE accuracy as compared to existing methods, especially in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenarios.

Channel Tracking for RIS-aided mmWave Communications Under High Mobility Scenarios

The emerging reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology is promising for applications in the millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems to effectively compensate for propagation loss or tackle the blockage issue. Considering the high mobility of users in realistic scenarios, it is essential to adjust the phase shifts in real time to align the beam towards the mobile users, which requires to frequently estimate the channel state information. Hence, it is imperative to design efficient channel tracking schemes to avoid the complex channel estimation procedure. In this paper, we develop a novel channel tracking scheme with two advantages over conventional schemes. First, our tracking scheme is based on the cascaded angles at the RIS instead of the accurate angle values, which is more practical. Second, it can be employed under a more general setting where the noise can be non-Gaussian. Simulation results show the high tracking accuracy of our proposed scheme, and validate the superiority to the existing EKF-based tracking scheme.

RIS-Aided Near-Field Localization and Channel Estimation for the Sub-Terahertz System

The low hardware cost makes ultra-large (XL) reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) an attractive solution for the performance enhancement of localization and communication systems, but it results in near-field propagation channels, especially for the high-frequency communication systems, e.g. mmWave and sub-terahertz (subTHz) systems. This makes localization and channel estimation in the near field of the RIS-aided subTHz system more challenging. In this paper, we consider the spherical wavefront propagation in the near field of the subTHz system with the assistance of a RIS. A near-field channel estimation and localization (NF-JCEL) algorithm is proposed based on the derived second-order Fresnel approximation of the near-field channel model. To be specific, we first decouple the user equipment (UE) distances and angles of arrival (AoAs) through a down-sampled Toeplitz covariance matrix, so that the vertical and azimuth AoAs in the array steering vectors can be estimated separately with low complexities. Then, the UE distance can be estimated by the simple one-dimensional search, and the channel attenuation coefficients are obtained through the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) method. Simulation results validate the superiority of the proposed NF-JCEL algorithm to the conventional far-field algorithm, and show that higher resolution accuracy can be obtained by the proposed algorithm.

Joint Angle Estimation Error Analysis and 3D Positioning Algorithm Design for mmWave Positioning System

In this paper, we propose a comprehensive framework to jointly analyze the angle estimation error and design the three-dimensional (3D) positioning algorithm for a millimeter wave (mmWave) positioning system. First, we estimate the angles of arrival (AoAs) at the anchors by applying the two-dimensional discrete Fourier transform (2D-DFT) algorithm. Based on the property of the 2D-DFT algorithm, the angle estimation error is analyzed in terms of probability density functions (PDF). The analysis shows that the derived angle estimation error is non-Gaussian, which is different from the existing work. Second, the intricate expression of the PDF of the AoA estimation error is simplified by employing the first-order linear approximation of triangle functions. Then, we derive a complex expression for the variance based on the derived PDF. Specifically, for the azimuth estimation error, the variance is separately integrated according to the different non-zero intervals of the PDF. Finally, we apply the weighted least square (WLS) algorithm to estimate the 3D position of the MU by using the estimated AoAs and the obtained non-Gaussian variance. Extensive simulation results confirm that the derived angle estimation error is non-Gaussian, and also demonstrate the superiority of the proposed framework.

Fingerprint Based mmWave Positioning System Aided by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technique for millimeter wave (mmWave) positioning systems. In this paper, we consider multiple mobile users (MUs) positioning problem in the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) time-division duplex (TDD) mmWave systems aided by the RIS. We derive the expression for the space-time channel response vector (STCRV) as a novel type of fingerprint. The STCRV consists of the multipath channel characteristics, e.g., time delay and angle of arrival (AOA), which is related to the position of the MU. By using the STCRV as input, we propose a novel residual convolution network regression (RCNR) learning algorithm to output the estimated three-dimensional (3D) position of the MU. Specifically, the RCNR learninng algorithm includes a data processing block to process the input STCRV, a normal convolution block to extract the features of STCRV, four residual convolution blocks to further extract the features and protect the integrity of the features, and a regression block to estimate the 3D position. Extensive simulation results are also presented to demonstrate that the proposed RCNR learning algorithm outperforms the traditional convolution neural network (CNN).

An Overview of Signal Processing Techniques for RIS/IRS-aided Wireless Systems

In the past as well as present wireless communication systems, the wireless propagation environment is regarded as an uncontrollable black box that impairs the received signal quality, and its negative impacts are compensated for by relying on the design of various sophisticated transmission/reception schemes. However, the improvements through applying such schemes operating at two endpoints (i.e., transmitter and receiver) only are limited even after five generations of wireless systems. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) or intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) have emerged as a new and revolutionary technology that can configure the wireless environment in a favorable manner by properly tuning the phase shifts of a large number of quasi passive and low-cost reflecting elements, thus standing out as a promising candidate technology for the next-/sixth-generation (6G) wireless system. However, to reap the performance benefits promised by RIS/IRS, efficient signal processing techniques are crucial, for a variety of purposes such as channel estimation, transmission design, radio localization, and so on. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances on RIS/IRS-aided wireless systems from the signal processing perspective. We also highlight promising research directions that are worthy of investigation in the future.

Self-Sustainable Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided Simultaneous Terahertz Information and Power Transfer (STIPT)

This paper proposes a new simultaneous terahertz (THz) information and power transfer (STIPT) system, which is assisted by reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) for both the information data and power transmission. We aim to maximize the information users' (IUs') data rate while guaranteeing the energy users' (EUs') and RIS's power harvesting requirements. To solve the formulated non-convex problem, the block coordinate descent (BCD) based algorithm is adopted to alternately optimize the transmit precoding of IUs, RIS's reflecting coefficients, and RIS's coordinate. The Penalty Constrained Convex Approximation (PCCA) Algorithm is proposed to solve the intractable optimization problem of the RIS's coordinate, where the solution's feasibility is guaranteed by the introduced penalties. Simulation results confirm that the proposed BCD algorithm can significantly enhance the performance of STIPT by employing RIS.

Sum Rate Maximization for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Terahertz Communications

In this paper, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is deployed to assist the terahertz (THz) communications. The molecular absorption causes path loss peaks to appear in the THz frequency band, and the fading peak is greatly affected by the transmission distance. In this paper, we aim to maximize the sum rate with individual rate constraints, in which the IRS location, IRS phase shift, the allocation of sub-bands of the THz spectrum, and power control for UEs are jointly optimized. For the special case of a single user equipment (UE) with a single sub-band, the globally optimal solution is provided. For the general case with multiple UEs, the block coordinate searching (BCS) based algorithm is proposed to solve the non-convex problem. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can significantly enhance system performance.

Cost Minimization for Cooperative Computation Framework in MEC Networks

In this paper, a cooperative task computation framework exploits the computation resource in UEs to accomplish more tasks meanwhile minimizes the power consumption of UEs. The system cost includes the cost of UEs' power consumption and the penalty of unaccomplished tasks and the system cost is minimized by jointly optimizing binary offloading decisions, the computational frequencies, and the offloading transmit power. To solve the formulated mixed-integer non-linear programming problem, three efficient algorithms are proposed, i.e., integer constraints relaxation-based iterative algorithm (ICRBI), heuristic matching algorithm, and the decentralized algorithm. The ICRBI algorithm achieves the best performance at the cost of the highest complexity, while the heuristic matching algorithm significantly reduces the complexity while still providing reasonable performance. As the previous two algorithms are centralized, the decentralized algorithm is also provided to further reduce the complexity, and it is suitable for the scenarios that cannot provide the central controller. The simulation results are provided to validate the performance gain in terms of the total system cost obtained by the proposed cooperative computation framework.
