Fisher-KPP waves and the minimal speed on hexagonal lattice

The hexagonal structure is ubiquitous in nature. The propagation phenomena occurring in a media with a hexagonal structure remain to be explored. One way of exploring this question is to formulate lattice dynamical systems and analyze the propagation dynamics. In this paper, we propose a lattice differential equation model featuring a discrete diffusion operator with the hexagonal structure, and a monostable nonlinear term known as the Fisher-KPP mechanism in modeling population growth. A rigorous analysis is conducted on the traveling waves, thoroughly establishing the existence and uniqueness (up to translation) of the traveling waves. Moreover, the periodicity and monotonicity of the minimal wave speed concerning an angle are demonstrated, which is different from the existing results of the minimal wave speed in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $\mathbb{Z}^2$. Numerical results validate theoretical analysis and further suggest that the minimal wave speed is also the spreading speed of solutions with compactly supported initial values.

A story of viral co-infection, co-transmission and co-feeding in ticks: how to compute an invasion reproduction number

With a single circulating vector-borne virus, the basic reproduction number incorporates contributions from tick-to-tick (co-feeding), tick-to-host and host-to-tick transmission routes. With two different circulating vector-borne viral strains, resident and invasive, and under the assumption that co-feeding is the only transmission route in a tick population, the invasion reproduction number depends on whether the model system of ordinary differential equations possesses the property of neutrality. We show that a simple model, with two populations of ticks infected with one strain, resident or invasive, and one population of co-infected ticks, does not have Alizon's neutrality property. We present model alternatives that are capable of representing the invasion potential of a novel strain by including populations of ticks dually infected with the same strain. The invasion reproduction number is analysed with the next-generation method and via numerical simulations.

A perturbation approach to studying sign-changing solutions of Kirchhoff equations with a general nonlinearity

By employing a novel perturbation approach and the method of invariant sets of descending flow, this manuscript investigates the existence and multiplicity of sign-changing solutions to a class of semilinear Kirchhoff equations in the following form $$ -\left(a+ b\int_{\R^3}|\nabla u|^2\right)\triangle {u}+V(x)u=f(u),\,\,x\in\R^3, $$ where $a,b>0$ are constants, $V\in C(\R^3,\R)$, $f\in C(\R,\R)$. The methodology proposed in the current paper is robust, in the sense that, the monotonicity condition for the nonlinearity $f$ and the coercivity condition of $V$ are not required. Our result improves the study made by Y. Deng, S. Peng and W. Shuai ({\it J. Functional Analysis}, 3500-3527(2015)), in the sense that, in the present paper, the nonlinearities include the power-type case $f(u)=|u|^{p-2}u$ for $p\in(2,4)$, in which case, it remains open in the existing literature that whether there exist infinitely many sign-changing solutions to the problem above without the coercivity condition of $V$. Moreover, {\it energy doubling} is established, i.e., the energy of sign-changing solutions is strictly large than two times that of the ground state solutions for small $b>0$.

Synchronization of Networked Harmonic Oscillators via Quantized Sampled Velocity Feedback

In this technical note, we propose a practicable quantized sampled velocity data coupling protocol for synchronization of a set of harmonic oscillators. The coupling protocol is designed in a quantized way via interconnecting the velocities encoded by a uniform quantizer with a zooming parameter in either a fixed or an adjustable form over a directed communication network. We establish sufficient conditions for the networked harmonic oscillators to converge to a bounded neighborhood of the synchronized orbits with a fixed zooming parameter. We ensure the oscillators to achieve synchronization by designing the quantized coupling protocol with an adjustable zooming parameter. Finally, we show two numerical examples to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed coupling protocol.

Prevention and control of Zika fever as a mosquito-borne and sexually transmitted disease

The ongoing Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic poses a major global public health emergency. It is known that ZIKV is spread by \textit{Aedes} mosquitoes, recent studies show that ZIKV can also be transmitted via sexual contact and cases of sexually transmitted ZIKV have been confirmed in the U.S., France, and Italy. How sexual transmission affects the spread and control of ZIKV infection is not well-understood. We presented a mathematical model to investigate the impact of mosquito-borne and sexual transmission on spread and control of ZIKV and used the model to fit the ZIKV data in Brazil, Colombia, and El Salvador. Based on the estimated parameter values, we calculated the median and confidence interval of the basic reproduction number R0=2.055 (95% CI: 0.523-6.300), in which the distribution of the percentage of contribution by sexual transmission is 3.044 (95% CI: 0.123-45.73). Our study indicates that R0 is most sensitive to the biting rate and mortality rate of mosquitoes while sexual transmission increases the risk of infection and epidemic size and prolongs the outbreak. In order to prevent and control the transmission of ZIKV, it must be treated as not only a mosquito-borne disease but also a sexually transmitted disease.
