Utilizing Improper Gaussian Signaling for Downlink Rate-Splitting Multiple Access systems with Imperfect Successive Interference Cancellation

To mitigate the residual interference from imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC) in Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA), this paper incorporates improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) into the downlink RSMA framework. Unlike existing RSMA--IGS works that embed impropriety within IQ-imbalanced frameworks, we show that IGS alone effectively counters SIC-induced residual interference. A basic Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) setup is considered with IGS on the common stream and proper Gaussian signaling (PGS) on the private streams, and it is analyzed in three parts. First, we show that the private rate maximization is achieved at the maximum signal impropriety. Second, we derive closed-form optimal solutions with rigorous monotonicity conditions for the common rate maximization. Third, to address the non-convex sum rate maximization, we develop a soft actor-critic (SAC) based algorithm that efficiently explores the solution space. Theoretical analysis and numerical results demonstrate that IGS consistently surpasses PGS, and its performance advantage becomes more pronounced when the SIC imperfection becomes severe.

Uplink Signal Detection For Large-Scale MIMO-ISAC Systems

Next-generation wireless communication systems are unifying large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) to enhance sensing and communication performance. In this paper, the signal detection problem for MIMO-ISAC systems is modeled as a mixed-integer least squares (MILS) problem. To solve it efficiently, we propose a projection-based neighborhood search-aided alternating direction method of multipliers (P-NS-ADMM) detection scheme. By theoretical analysis, we demonstrate that P-NS-ADMM achieves the same received diversity order as maximum likelihood (ML) detection. For further complexity reduction, an iteration-based NS-ADMM (I-NS-ADMM) is proposed to remove the complex projection operation. Complexity analysis shows its complexity advantage compared with P-NS-ADMM. Moreover, to better estimate the sensing signals for I-NS-ADMM, a flexible mechanism of ADMM iterations is given. Finally, simulations demonstrate the proposed NS-aided ADMM detection schemes have significant performance advantages in terms of both BER and NMSE.

Continuous Telemonitoring of Heart Failure using Personalised Speech Dynamics

Remote monitoring of heart failure (HF) via speech signals provides a non-invasive and cost-effective solution for long-term patient management. However, substantial inter-individual heterogeneity in vocal characteristics often limits the accuracy of traditional cross-sectional classification models. To address this, we propose a Longitudinal Intra-Patient Tracking (LIPT) scheme designed to capture the trajectory of relative symptomatic changes within individuals. Central to this framework is a Personalised Sequential Encoder (PSE), which transforms longitudinal speech recordings into context-aware latent representations. By incorporating historical data at each timestamp, the PSE facilitates a holistic assessment of the clinical trajectory rather than modelling discrete visits independently. Experimental results from a cohort of 225 patients demonstrate that the LIPT paradigm significantly outperforms the classic cross-sectional approaches, achieving a recognition accuracy of 99.7% for clinical status transitions. The model's high sensitivity was further corroborated by additional follow-up data, confirming its efficacy in predicting HF deterioration and its potential to secure patient safety in remote, home-based settings. Furthermore, this work addresses the gap in existing literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of different speech task designs and acoustic features. Taken together, the superior performance of the LIPT framework and PSE architecture validates their readiness for integration into long-term telemonitoring systems, offering a scalable solution for remote heart failure management.

A Chinese Heart Failure Status Speech Database with Universal and Personalised Classification

Speech is a cost-effective and non-intrusive data source for identifying acute and chronic heart failure (HF). However, there is a lack of research on whether Chinese syllables contain HF-related information, as observed in other well-studied languages. This study presents the first Chinese speech database of HF patients, featuring paired recordings taken before and after hospitalisation. The findings confirm the effectiveness of the Chinese language in HF detection using both standard 'patient-wise' and personalised 'pair-wise' classification approaches, with the latter serving as an ideal speaker-decoupled baseline for future research. Statistical tests and classification results highlight individual differences as key contributors to inaccuracy. Additionally, an adaptive frequency filter (AFF) is proposed for frequency importance analysis. The data and demonstrations are published at https://github.com/panyue1998/Voice_HF.

The HR-Calculus: Enabling Information Processing with Quaternion Algebra

From their inception, quaternions and their division algebra have proven to be advantageous in modelling rotation/orientation in three-dimensional spaces and have seen use from the initial formulation of electromagnetic filed theory through to forming the basis of quantum filed theory. Despite their impressive versatility in modelling real-world phenomena, adaptive information processing techniques specifically designed for quaternion-valued signals have only recently come to the attention of the machine learning, signal processing, and control communities. The most important development in this direction is introduction of the HR-calculus, which provides the required mathematical foundation for deriving adaptive information processing techniques directly in the quaternion domain. In this article, the foundations of the HR-calculus are revised and the required tools for deriving adaptive learning techniques suitable for dealing with quaternion-valued signals, such as the gradient operator, chain and product derivative rules, and Taylor series expansion are presented. This serves to establish the most important applications of adaptive information processing in the quaternion domain for both single-node and multi-node formulations. The article is supported by Supplementary Material, which will be referred to as SM.

Optimality of the Proper Gaussian Signal in Complex MIMO Wiretap Channels

The multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channel (WTC), which has a transmitter, a legitimate user and an eavesdropper, is a classic model for studying information theoretic secrecy. In this paper, the fundamental problem for the complex WTC is whether the proper signal is optimal has yet to be given explicit proof, though previous work implicitly assumed the complex signal was proper. Thus, a determinant inequality is proposed to prove that the secrecy rate of a complex Gaussian signal with a fixed covariance matrix in a degraded complex WTC is maximized if and only if the signal is proper, i.e., the pseudo-covariance matrix is a zero matrix. Moreover, based on the result of the degraded complex WTC and the min-max reformulation of the secrecy capacity, the optimality of the proper signal in the general complex WTC is also revealed. The results of this research complement the current research on complex WTC. To be more specific, we have shown it is sufficient to focus on the proper signal when studying the secrecy capacity of the complex WTC.

ASFD: Automatic and Scalable Face Detector

Along with current multi-scale based detectors, Feature Aggregation and Enhancement (FAE) modules have shown superior performance gains for cutting-edge object detection. However, these hand-crafted FAE modules show inconsistent improvements on face detection, which is mainly due to the significant distribution difference between its training and applying corpus, COCO vs. WIDER Face. To tackle this problem, we essentially analyse the effect of data distribution, and consequently propose to search an effective FAE architecture, termed AutoFAE by a differentiable architecture search, which outperforms all existing FAE modules in face detection with a considerable margin. Upon the found AutoFAE and existing backbones, a supernet is further built and trained, which automatically obtains a family of detectors under the different complexity constraints. Extensive experiments conducted on popular benchmarks, WIDER Face and FDDB, demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance-efficiency trade-off for the proposed automatic and scalable face detector (ASFD) family. In particular, our strong ASFD-D6 outperforms the best competitor with AP 96.7/96.2/92.1 on WIDER Face test, and the lightweight ASFD-D0 costs about 3.1 ms, more than 320 FPS, on the V100 GPU with VGA-resolution images.

On the Distribution of SINR for Widely Linear MMSE MIMO Systems with Rectilinear or Quasi-Rectilinear Signals

Although the widely linear least mean square error (WLMMSE) receiver has been an appealing option for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems, a statistical understanding on its pose-detection signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in detail is still missing. To this end, we consider a WLMMSE MIMO transmission system with rectilinear or quasi-rectilinear (QR) signals over the uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channel and investigate the statistical properties of its SINR for an arbitrary antenna configuration with $N_t$ transmit antennas and $N_r$ receive ones. We first derive an analytic probability density function (PDF) of the SINR in terms of the confluent hypergeometric function of the second kind, for WLMMSE MIMO systems with an arbitrary $N_r$ and $N_t=2, 3$. For a more general case in practice, i.e., $N_t>3$, we resort to the moment generating function to obtain an approximate but closed form PDF under some mild conditions, which, as expected, is more Gaussian-like as $2N_r-N_t$ increases. The so-derived PDFs are able to provide key insights into the WLMMSE MIMO receiver in terms of the outage probability, the symbol error rate, and the diversity gain, all presented in closed form. In particular, its diversity gain and the gain improvement over the conventional LMMSE one are explicitly quantified as $N_r-(N_t-1)/2$ and $(N_t-1)/2$, respectively. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations support the analysis.

A Full Second-Order Analysis of the Widely Linear MVDR Beamformer for Noncircular Signals

A full performance analysis of the widely linear (WL) minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamformer is introduced. While the WL MVDR is known to outperform its strictly linear counterpart, the Capon beamformer, for noncircular complex signals, the existing approaches provide limited physical insights, since they explicitly or implicitly omit the complementary second-order (SO) statistics of the output interferences and noise (IN). To this end, we exploit the full SO statistics of the output IN to introduce a full SO performance analysis framework for the WL MVDR beamformer. This makes it possible to separate the overall signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) gain of the WL MVDR beamformer w.r.t. the Capon one into the individual contributions along the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) channels. Next, by considering the reception of the unknown signal of interest (SOI) corrupted by an arbitrary number of orthogonal noncircular interferences, we further unveil the distribution of SINR gains in both the I and Q channels, and show that in almost all the spatial cases, these performance advantages are more pronounced when the SO noncircularity rate of the interferences increases. Illustrative numerical simulations are provided to support the theoretical results.

ACFD: Asymmetric Cartoon Face Detector

Cartoon face detection is a more challenging task than human face detection due to many difficult scenarios is involved. Aiming at the characteristics of cartoon faces, such as huge differences within the intra-faces, in this paper, we propose an asymmetric cartoon face detector, named ACFD. Specifically, it consists of the following modules: a novel backbone VoVNetV3 comprised of several asymmetric one-shot aggregation modules (AOSA), asymmetric bi-directional feature pyramid network (ABi-FPN), dynamic anchor match strategy (DAM) and the corresponding margin binary classification loss (MBC). In particular, to generate features with diverse receptive fields, multi-scale pyramid features are extracted by VoVNetV3, and then fused and enhanced simultaneously by ABi-FPN for handling the faces in some extreme poses and have disparate aspect ratios. Besides, DAM is used to match enough high-quality anchors for each face, and MBC is for the strong power of discrimination. With the effectiveness of these modules, our ACFD achieves the 1st place on the detection track of 2020 iCartoon Face Challenge under the constraints of model size 200MB, inference time 50ms per image, and without any pretrained models.

ASFD: Automatic and Scalable Face Detector

In this paper, we propose a novel Automatic and Scalable Face Detector (ASFD), which is based on a combination of neural architecture search techniques as well as a new loss design. First, we propose an automatic feature enhance module named Auto-FEM by improved differential architecture search, which allows efficient multi-scale feature fusion and context enhancement. Second, we use Distance-based Regression and Margin-based Classification (DRMC) multi-task loss to predict accurate bounding boxes and learn highly discriminative deep features. Third, we adopt compound scaling methods and uniformly scale the backbone, feature modules, and head networks to develop a family of ASFD, which are consistently more efficient than the state-of-the-art face detectors. Extensive experiments conducted on popular benchmarks, e.g. WIDER FACE and FDDB, demonstrate that our ASFD-D6 outperforms the prior strong competitors, and our lightweight ASFD-D0 runs at more than 120 FPS with Mobilenet for VGA-resolution images.

Attention Mechanism Enhanced Kernel Prediction Networks for Denoising of Burst Images

Deep learning based image denoising methods have been extensively investigated. In this paper, attention mechanism enhanced kernel prediction networks (AME-KPNs) are proposed for burst image denoising, in which, nearly cost-free attention modules are adopted to first refine the feature maps and to further make a full use of the inter-frame and intra-frame redundancies within the whole image burst. The proposed AME-KPNs output per-pixel spatially-adaptive kernels, residual maps and corresponding weight maps, in which, the predicted kernels roughly restore clean pixels at their corresponding locations via an adaptive convolution operation, and subsequently, residuals are weighted and summed to compensate the limited receptive field of predicted kernels. Simulations and real-world experiments are conducted to illustrate the robustness of the proposed AME-KPNs in burst image denoising.

A Data Analytics Perspective of the Clarke and Related Transforms in Power Grid Analysis

Affordable and reliable electric power is fundamental to modern society and economy, with the Smart Grid becoming an increasingly important factor in power generation and distribution. In order to fully exploit it advantages, the analysis of modern Smart Grid requires close collaboration and convergence between power engineers and signal processing and machine learning experts. Current analysis techniques are typically derived from a Circuit Theory perspective; such an approach is adequate for only fully balanced systems operating at nominal conditions and non-obvious for data scientists - this is prohibitive for the analysis of dynamically unbalanced smart grids, where Data Analytics is not only well suited but also necessary. A common language that bridges the gap between Circuit Theory and Data Analytics, and the respective community of experts, would be a natural step forward. To this end, we revisit the Clarke and related transforms from a subspace, latent component, and spatial frequency analysis frameworks, to establish fundamental relationships between the standard three-phase transforms and modern Data Analytics. We show that the Clarke transform admits a physical interpretation as a "spatial dimensionality" reduction technique which is equivalent to Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for balanced systems, but is sub-optimal for dynamically unbalanced systems, such as the Smart Grid, while the related Park transform performs further "temporal" dimensionality reduction. Such a perspective opens numerous new avenues for the use Signal Processing and Machine Learning in power grid research, and paves the way for innovative optimisation, transformation, and analysis techniques that are not accessible to arrive at from the standard Circuit Theory principles, as demonstrated in this work through the possibility of simultaneous frequency estimation and fault detection.

An Augmented Nonlinear LMS for Digital Self-Interference Cancellation in Full-Duplex Direct-Conversion Transceivers

In future full-duplex communications, the cancellation of self-interference (SI) arising from hardware non-idealities will play an important role in the design of mobile-scale devices. To this end, we introduce an optimal digital SI cancellation solution for shared-antenna-based direct-conversion transceivers. To establish that the underlying widely linear signal model is not adequate for strong transmit signals, the impact of various circuit imperfections, including power amplifier (PA) distortion, frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance, quantization noise and thermal noise, on the performance of the conventional augmented least mean square (LMS) based SI canceller, is analyzed. In order to achieve a sufficient signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) when the nonlinear SI components are not negligible, we propose an augmented nonlinear LMS based SI canceller for a joint cancellation of both the linear and nonlinear SI components by virtue of a widely nonlinear model fit. A rigorous mean and mean square performance evaluation is conducted to justify the performance advantages of the proposed scheme over the conventional augmented LMS solution. Simulations on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based wireless local area network (WLAN) standard compliant waveforms support the analysis.

Simultaneous diagonalisation of the covariance and complementary covariance matrices in quaternion widely linear signal processing

Recent developments in quaternion-valued widely linear processing have established that the exploitation of complete second-order statistics requires consideration of both the standard covariance and the three complementary covariance matrices. Although such matrices have a tremendous amount of structure and their decomposition is a powerful tool in a variety of applications, the non-commutative nature of the quaternion product has been prohibitive to the development of quaternion uncorrelating transforms. To this end, we introduce novel techniques for a simultaneous decomposition of the covariance and complementary covariance matrices in the quaternion domain, whereby the quaternion version of the Takagi factorisation is explored to diagonalise symmetric quaternion-valued matrices. This gives new insights into the quaternion uncorrelating transform (QUT) and forms a basis for the proposed quaternion approximate uncorrelating transform (QAUT) which simultaneously diagonalises all four covariance matrices associated with improper quaternion signals. The effectiveness of the proposed uncorrelating transforms is validated by simulations on both synthetic and real-world quaternion-valued signals.

Distributed Widely Linear Frequency Estimation in Unbalanced Three Phase Power Systems

A novel method for distributed estimation of the frequency of power systems is introduced based on the cooperation between multiple measurement nodes. The proposed distributed widely linear complex Kalman filter (D-ACKF) and the distributed widely linear extended complex Kalman filter (D-AECKF) employ a widely linear state space and augmented complex statistics to deal with unbalanced system conditions and the generality complex signals, both second order circular (proper) and second order noncircular (improper). It is shown that the current, strictly linear, estimators are inadequate for unbalanced systems, a typical case in smart grids, as they do not account for either the noncircularity of Clarke's αβ-voltage in unbalanced conditions or the correlated nature of nodal disturbances. We illuminate the relationship between the degree of circularity of Clarke's voltage and system imbalance, and prove that the proposed widely linear estimators are optimal for such conditions, while also accounting for the correlated and noncircular nature of real-world nodal disturbances. {Synthetic and real world} case studies over a range of power system conditions illustrate the theoretical and practical advantages of the proposed methodology.
