A Quasi-deterministic Channel Model for Underwater Acoustic Communication Systems

In this paper, a quasi-deterministic (Q-D) model for non-stationary underwater acoustic (UWA) channels is proposed. This model combines the BELLHOP deterministic model and geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM), which provides higher accuracy and flexibility. Different propagation components in shallow water are classified as D-rays, R-rays and F-rays in the proposed model, where D-rays are modeled by BELLHOP while both R-rays and F-rays are modeled by GBSM. Some important channel statistical properties, including time-frequency correlation function (TF-CF), Doppler power spectrum density (PSD), average Doppler shift, and RMS Doppler spread are derived and simulated. Finally, simulation results illustrate the correctness of the proposed model.

Second microlocalization and Fredholm theory for the three-body problem

This paper studies quantum three-body scattering within a modern microlocal framework. We show that the three-body Helmholtz operator at positive energy gives rise to a pair of Fredholm maps between suitable anisotropic Hilbert spaces. Notably, we consider decay at various faces of spatial infinity separately, made precise via a compactification. Despite the problem's extensive history, new phenomena arise under this perspective, particularly regarding diffraction. Treating these phenomena requires the method of 'second microlocalization' introduced by Vasy in [arXiv:1808.06123] for the uniform Fredholm analysis of two-body Helmholtz operators at low energy, which does not directly extend to the three-body setting. This paper clarifies this structure. We construct the conormal three-cone algebra, which serves as a 'converse perspective' to the second microlocalization in question. This algebra exhibits a scattering structure at one spatial infinity face and a specific fibered structure at another, connected by a fibered cone. We show that by introducing suitable microlocal blow-ups at fiber infinity, the conormal three-cone algebra can be modified at the symbolic level to construct the desired second microlocalized algebra, which can be further promoted to a calculus. Incorporating variable orders, we use this calculus to prove microlocal propagation estimates with respect to a new flow in phase space. This flow has several radial sets (i.e., equilibria) which behave like saddles, so radial point estimates are required. By combining these estimates with elliptic regularity, and applying the result of Vasy in [arXiv:1808.06123] as a black box, we show that the refined Fredholm maps can indeed be constructed.

Design of a Variable Stiffness Quasi-Direct Drive Cable-Actuated Tensegrity Robot

Tensegrity robots excel in tasks requiring extreme levels of deformability and robustness. However, there are challenges in state estimation and payload versatility due to their high number of degrees of freedom and unconventional shape. This paper introduces a modular three-bar tensegrity robot featuring a customizable payload design. Our tensegrity robot employs a novel Quasi-Direct Drive (QDD) cable actuator paired with low-stretch polymer cables to achieve accurate proprioception without the need for external force or torque sensors. The design allows for on-the-fly stiffness tuning for better environment and payload adaptability. In this paper, we present the design, fabrication, assembly, and experimental results of the robot. Experimental data demonstrates the high accuracy cable length estimation (<1% error relative to bar length) and variable stiffness control of the cable actuator up to 7 times the minimum stiffness for self support. The presented tensegrity robot serves as a platform for future advancements in autonomous operation and open-source module design.

Super-concentrated alkali hydroxide electrolytes for rechargeable Zn batteries

Rechargeable Zn batteries offer safe, inexpensive energy storage, but when deeply discharged to compete with lithium-ion batteries, they are plagued by parasitic reactions at the Zn anodes. We apply super-concentrated alkaline electrolytes to suppress two key parasitic reactions, hydrogen evolution and ZnO passivation. An electrolyte with 15 M KOH displays a broad electrochemical window (>2.5 V on Au), a high ZnO solubility (>1.5 M), and an exceptionally high ionic conductivity (>0.27 S/cm at 25 C). Spectroscopies and ab-initio molecular dynamics simulation suggest K+-OH- pairs and a tightened water network to underpin the stability. The simulation further reveals unique triggered proton hopping that offsets the lack of water wires to sustain the conductivity. Low hydrogen evolution, confirmed via online mass spectroscopy, and slow passivation enable a NiOOH||Zn battery to deliver a cumulative capacity of 8.4 Ah cm-2 and a Zn-air battery to last for over 110 hours.

The Calderón problem in the $L^p$ framework on Riemann surfaces

The purpose of this article is to extend the uniqueness results for the two dimensional Calderón problem to unbounded potentials on general geometric settings. We prove that the Cauchy data sets for Schrödinger equations uniquely determines potentials in $L^{p}$ for $p> 4/3$. In doing so, we first recover singularities of the potential, from which point a $L^2$-based method of stationary phase can be applied. Both steps are done via constructions of complex geometric optic solutions and Carleman estimates.
