Hear, Invoke, and Understand: A Skill-Calling Multimodal Agent for Large Audio Language Models

Complex acoustic problems may require models to perform acoustic operations, interact with external tools and reason over the resulting textual or processed-audio observations rather than answer directly from a fixed audio input. We study such problems as tool-interactive audio reasoning and develop SpeechAgent-R, an audio agent that coordinates its intrinsic multimodal understanding with external skills and tools. To support this capability, we construct HIU-Corpus, comprising 65,492 interaction trajectories and 507.6 hours of audio across 24 tasks, 8 skills and 9 tools. SpeechAgent-R first learns structured interaction behaviors through trajectory-based supervised fine-tuning and then improves its decisions through multi-turn reinforcement learning. We further introduce HIU-Bench to jointly evaluate task performance, interaction quality and generalization to diverse task settings. It contains 1,395 samples across 56 tasks, including in-distribution (ID) and out-of-distribution (OOD) splits with substantial shifts in tool usage and workflow composition. SpeechAgent-R achieves 84.17 on ID tasks and 70.94 on OOD tasks, improving over the base model under the same agent harness by 15.40 and 14.23 points. These results demonstrate that learning skill and tool coordination improves audio agents' ability to handle diverse task settings and adaptive tool interactions.

Epistemic Stance Flexibility Probing: Measuring Prompt-Conditioned Register Shift in Large Language Models

A language model may be asked either what experts believe about a contested claim or what it believes about the claim itself. A trustworthy conversational agent should distinguish these two requests and respond in different epistemic registers: neutral attribution in the first case and stance expression in the second. Whether such a shift occurs-and whether it occurs coherently-is not directly assessed by existing benchmarks for accuracy, instruction following, or safety. We introduce ESFP, a behavioral benchmark that treats the contrast between externally attributed and self-attributed prompts as the fundamental unit of measurement. ESFP consists of 104 carefully controlled items spanning six epistemic categories and five phrasing templates, and evaluates model responses along four complementary dimensions: lexical self-attribution, representation-level responsiveness to role framing, sentence-level stance content density assessed by an LLM judge panel, and cross-condition stance consistency. Evaluating eight frontier models from five vendors, we find that epistemic flexibility is largely orthogonal to general model capability: a 27B open-weight model matches the strongest proprietary systems, the flagship model of one family underperforms its lightweight counterpart, and reasoning-optimized models do not consistently exhibit higher flexibility. Stance content density provides the strongest signal, while surface-level lexical markers such as 'I think' can change substantially without corresponding changes in expressed stance. We provide item-level bootstrap confidence intervals, weight-sensitivity analyses, and an explicit discussion of the interpretation limits of the composite score. ESFP measures a model's propensity to adapt its epistemic stance under changing attribution conditions, rather than a general competence measure.

NVV-SuperBench: Beyond Words, Beyond Quality-Benchmarking Nonverbal Vocalizations in Speech Generation

Nonverbal vocalizations (NVVs), such as laughing, sighing, and sobbing, are essential for human-like speech, yet standardized evaluation rarely jointly assesses whether systems generate the intended NVVs, place them correctly, and keep them salient without harming speech. We present NVV-SuperBench, a bilingual English/Chinese benchmark for speech generation with NVVs. It provides a unified 45-type taxonomy and a multi-axis protocol beyond conventional speech quality assessment, evaluating NVV-specific controllability, placement, and perceptual salience. We benchmark 15 speech generation systems spanning prompt-based and tag-based control paradigms, using objective metrics, human listening tests, and LLM-based multi-rater evaluation. Results show that NVV controllability often decouples from speech quality, while low-SNR oral cues and long-duration affective NVVs remain bottlenecks. NVV-SuperBench highlights current gaps and supports progress toward more human-like speech generation.
