From Spatial Semantics to Temporal Context: Leveraging Gaze Trajectory for Weakly Supervised Medical Image Segmentation

Medical image segmentation heavily depends on labor-intensive and time-consuming pixel-level annotations. Eye tracking offers a cost-effective solution that can be naturally integrated into clinical workflows. Recorded by eye trackers, gaze conveys the spatial regions of clinicians' attention through fixations and the temporal context of clinicians' progressive visual perception from trajectories. Nevertheless, effective modeling of temporal trajectories remains challenging, and noise in gaze caused by exploratory fixations greatly limits segmentation performance. To overcome these limitations, we propose the Trajectory-guided Uncertainty-aware Network (TrailNet), which exploits gaze-supervised medical image segmentation from spatial semantics modeling to temporal context by jointly leveraging fixations and trajectories. Specifically, the proposed trajectory-guided spatio-temporal encoder models temporal context and establishes complementary interactions with image spatial semantics to strengthen target perception. Furthermore, the multi-scale uncertainty decoder leverages category mutual-exclusivity constraints to produce deterministic predictions and mitigate supervision uncertainty induced by noise. To enable gaze-free inference, we further introduce a cycle distillation strategy that transfers feature-level knowledge via teacher-student networks. Experimental results on two public datasets demonstrate that TrailNet outperforms state-of-the-art methods, achieving Dice scores of 81.25% and 81.85%, respectively.

VirtualCrime: Evaluating the Criminal Potential and Agentic Behaviors of Large Language Models via Sandbox Simulation

Large language models (LLMs) have shown strong capabilities in multi-step decision-making, and are increasingly integrated into real-world agentic applications. While existing safety evaluations focus on static interactions or refusal rates, it remains largely underexplored what level of threat these models pose once an adversary successfully assigns them a malicious role. To evaluate this agentic misuse risk, we propose VirtualCrime, a dynamic multi-agent sandbox framework that elicits and measures multi-step criminal behavior from LLMs. We design 40 diverse crime tasks within this framework, covering 11 realistic maps and 14 objectives such as theft, robbery, and kidnapping. We evaluate 8 strong LLMs and find that: (1) even with robust safety alignment, all evaluated models exhibit alarming agentic capabilities to generate and execute detailed multi-step criminal plans when placed in an adversarial red-teaming setting; (2) models frequently suffer from behavioral alignment failures, exhibiting a high propensity for over-harm by escalating to violent means far beyond what the task requires; (3) their most sophisticated criminal behaviors concentrate in social deception and team coordination rather than technical exploitation. Our work highlights a critical gap in current safety paradigms, emphasizing the urgent need for behavioral alignment in autonomous agent deployments.

Enhanced photon-pair generation from a van der Waals metasurface

Quantum photon pairs play a pivotal role in many quantum applications. Metasurfaces, two-dimensional arrays of nanostructures, have been studied intensively to enhance and control pair generation via spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC). Van der Waals (VdW) layered materials have emerged as promising candidates for nonlinear materials in quantum light sources, owing to their high nonlinear susceptibility and compatibility with on-chip integration. In this work, we present the first demonstration of SPDC from a metasurface composed of the VdW material 3R-MoS2. The nanoresonators support quasi-bound states in the continuum (qBIC) with a quality factor of up to 120, enhancing light-matter interactions. This design achieves a 20-fold increase in SPDC rate compared to an unstructured film and significantly higher brightness, resulting in enhanced quantum photon-pair generation. This work establishes a new approach for utilizing van der Waals metasurfaces in the generation of quantum photon pairs, opening avenues for advanced quantum applications.

Can LLMs Generate Reliable Test Case Generators? A Study on Competition-Level Programming Problems

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in code generation, capable of tackling complex tasks during inference. However, the extent to which LLMs can be utilized for code checking or debugging through test case generation remains largely unexplored. We investigate this problem from the perspective of competition-level programming (CP) programs and propose TCGBench, a Benchmark for (LLM generation of) Test Case Generators. This benchmark comprises two tasks, aimed at studying the capabilities of LLMs in (1) generating valid test case generators for a given CP problem, and further (2) generating targeted test case generators that expose bugs in human-written code. Experimental results indicate that while state-of-the-art LLMs can generate valid test case generators in most cases, most LLMs struggle to generate targeted test cases that reveal flaws in human code effectively. Especially, even advanced reasoning models (e.g., o3-mini) fall significantly short of human performance in the task of generating targeted generators. Furthermore, we construct a high-quality, manually curated dataset of instructions for generating targeted generators. Analysis demonstrates that the performance of LLMs can be enhanced with the aid of this dataset, by both prompting and fine-tuning.

Giant Second Harmonic Generation from 3R-MoS$_2$ Metasurfaces

Metasurfaces have long served as a cornerstone technique to enhance nonlinear processes, enabling frequency conversion, efficient light manipulation and integrated photonic devices. However, traditional bulk materials often suffer from high absorption losses, hindering the second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency. Here, we develop a novel approach exploiting quasi-bound state in continuum (qBIC) to achieve giant SHG efficiency in metasurfaces utilizing 3R-MoS$_2$, with high index, superior damage threshold and inherent nonlinearity. The high refractive index of 3R-MoS$_2$, facilitates the high-quality factor (Q) metasurfaces, leading to reduced radiation leakage and localized light confinement within qBIC resonances, with which a remarkable 2000-fold enhancement in SHG intensity has been experimentally demonstrated. Additionally, the twist angle between the lattice orientation and the metasurface unit geometry exhibits a 120$^\circ$ periodicity in its influence on SHG behaviour. By strategically designing to realize the qBIC and exciton dual resonances and optimized twist angle (30$^\circ$), SHG conversion efficiency was boosted to ~1%, which is around 2 orders of magnitude higher than those of the best metasurfaces on traditional bulk materials. This approach enables potential applications in various areas of nonlinear optics, including frequency conversion, light manipulation, integrated photonics, and quantum communications.

Quasi-Phase-Matching Enabled by van der Waals Stacking

Quasi-phase matching (QPM) is a technique extensively utilized in nonlinear optics for enhancing the efficiency and stability of frequency conversion processes. However, the conventional QPM relies on periodically poled ferroelectric crystals, which are limited in availability. The 3R phase of molybdenum disulfide (3R-MoS2), a transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDc) with the broken inversion symmetry, stands out as a promising candidate for QPM, enabling efficient nonlinear process. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the QPM at nanoscale, utilizing van der Waals stacking of 3R-MoS2 layers with specific orientation to realize second harmonic generation (SHG) enhancement beyond the non QPM limit. We have also demonstrated enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) via QPM of 3R-MoS2 homo-structure, enabling more efficient generation of entangled photon pairs. The tunable capacity of 3R-MoS2 van der Waals stacking provides a platform for tuning phase-matching condition. This technique opens interesting possibilities for potential applications in nonlinear process and quantum technology.

A Tunable Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Entangled Photon-Pair Source

Entangled photon-pair sources are at the core of quantum applications like quantum key distribution, sensing, and imaging. Operation in space-limited and adverse environments such as in satellite-based and mobile communication requires robust entanglement sources with minimal size and weight requirements. Here, we meet this challenge by realizing a cubic micrometer scale entangled photon-pair source in a 3R-stacked transition metal dichalcogenide crystal. Its crystal symmetry enables the generation of polarization-entangled Bell states without additional components and provides tunability by simple control of the pump polarization. Remarkably, generation rate and state tuning are decoupled, leading to equal generation efficiency and no loss of entanglement. Combining transition metal dichalcogenides with monolithic cavities and integrated photonic circuitry or using quasi-phasematching opens the gate towards ultrasmall and scalable quantum devices.
