Mixed-Valence-Driven Heavy-Fermion Behavior and Superconductivity in KNi$_2$Se$_2$

Based on specific heat and magnetoresistance measurements, we report that a "heavy" electronic state exists below $T \approx$ 20 K in KNi$_2$Se$_2$, with an increased carrier mobility and enhanced effective electronic band mass, $m$* = 6$m_b$ to 18$m_b$. This "heavy" state evolves into superconductivity at $T_c$ = 0.80(1) K. These properties resemble that of a many-body heavy-fermion state, which derives from the hybridization between localized magnetic states and conduction electrons. Yet, no evidence for localized magnetism or magnetic order is found in KNi$_2$Se$_2$ from magnetization measurements or neutron diffraction. Instead, neutron pair-distribution-function analysis reveals the presence of local charge-density-wave distortions that disappear on cooling, an effect opposite to what is typically observed, suggesting that the low-temperature electronic state of KNi$_2$Se$_2$ arises from cooperative Coulomb interactions and proximity to, but avoidance of, charge order.

Experimental Study of Resistive Bistability in Metal Oxide Junctions

We have studied resistive bistability (memory) effects in junctions based on metal oxides, with a focus on sample-to-sample reproducibility which is necessary for the use of such junctions as crosspoint devices of hybrid CMOS/nanoelectronic circuits. Few-nm-thick layers of NbOx, CuOx and TiOx have been formed by thermal and plasma oxidation, at various deposition and oxidation conditions, both with or without rapid thermal post-annealing (RTA). The resistive bistability effect has been observed for all these materials, with particularly high endurance (over 1000 switching cycles) obtained for single-layer TiO2 junctions, and the best reproducibility reached for multi-layer junctions of the same material. Fabrication optimization has allowed us to improve the OFF/ON resistance ratio to about 1000, but the sample-to-sample reproducibility is so far lower than that required for large scale integration.

Switchable collective pinning of flux quanta using magnetic vortex arrays

We constructed a superconducting/ferromagnetic hybrid system in which the ordering of the pinning potential landscape for flux quanta can be manipulated. Flux pinning is induced by an array of magnetic nanodots in the magnetic vortex state, and controlled by the magnetic history. This allows switching on and off the collective pinning of the flux-lattice. In addition, we observed field-induced superconductivity that originates from the annihilation of flux quanta induced by the stray fields from the magnetic vortices.

Scaled frequency-dependent transport in the mesoscopically phase-separated colossal magnetoresistive manganite La_{0.625-y}Pr_yCa_{0.375}MnO_3

We address the issue of massive phase separation (PS) in manganite family of doped Mott insulators through ac conductivity measurements on La$_{0.625-y}$Pr$_{y}$Ca$_{0.375}$MnO$_{3}$ (0.375 $\leq$ y $\leq$ 0.275), and establish applicability of the scaling theory of percolation in the critical regime of the PS. Measurements of dc resistivity, magnetization (M(T)) and electron diffraction show incomplete growth of a ferromagnetic (FM) metallic component on cooling the high temperature charge ordered (CO) phase well below Curie temperature. The impedance $\mid$Z(T,f)$\mid$ measured over a frequency (f) range of 10 Hz to 10 MHz in the critical regime follows a universal scaling of the form $\approx$ R(T,0)g(f$ξ^{2+θ}$) with $θ$ $\approx$ 0.86 and the normalized correlation length varying from 1 to 4, suggesting anomalous diffusion of holes in percolating FM clusters.

Microstructure of strained La2CuO4+delta thin films on varied sub-strates

Layered perovskite La2CuO4+delta(LCO) thin films were epitaxially grown on SrTiO3 (STO) and LaSrAlO4 (LSAO) substrates by atomic-layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy. The lattice de-fects and residual strain in these films were investigated by means of transmission electron mi-croscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy. The LCO films showed a high epitaxial quality with flat interfaces and top surfaces. Misfit dislocations with Burgers vector a<010> and shear defects were frequently observed at or near the film/substrate interfaces and in the films, respec-tively, for all the LCO films. In one LCO film, grown on STO at the highest temperature, 700 oC, was a two layered structure. The top layer was identified as rhombohedral LaCuO2 by electron energy loss spectroscopy combined with electron diffraction. In addition, stacking faults were observed in plane-view micrographs of one LCO film grown on the STO substrate. The residual strains were evaluated from the spacing of misfit dislocations at the film/substrate interface and from the split electron diffraction patterns. Possible mechanisms of strain relaxations are dis-cussed based on the observed defects.

Inversion of two-band superconductivity at the critical electron doping of (Mg,Al)B$_2$

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) was combined with heat capacity measurements to follow the change of superconductivity with systematic Al doping of MgB$_2$. By using x-ray diffraction and Vegard's law to assess the actual Al content in the samples, changes in behavior were found to be much more in agreement with theoretical predictions than in earlier studies. EELS data show that $σ$-band hole states disappear above 33% Al, approximately the composition at which the $σ$ band Fermi surface is predicted to lose its cylindrical shape in reciprocal space and break apart into ellipsoidal pockets. At this composition, the $σ$ gap obtained from the heat capacity data falls to the level of the $π$ gap, implying that band filling results in the loss of strong superconductivity on the $σ$ band. However, superconductivity is not quenched completely, but persists with $T_c < 7$ K up to about 55% Al, the Al concentration at which the entire $σ$ band is predicted to fall below the Fermi surface. Since, in the region $0.33 \alt x \alt 0.55$, only the $π$ band has appreciable density of states, it becomes the stronger of the 2 bands, thus inverting the 2-band hierarchy of MgB$_2$.

Measuring the Hole State Anisotropy in MgB2 by Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy

We have examined polycrystalline MgB2 by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and density of state calculations. In particular, we have studied two different crystal orientations, [110] and [001] with respect to the incident electron beam direction, and found significant changes in the near-edge fine-structure of the B K-edge. Density functional theory suggests that the pre-peak of the B K-edge core loss is composed of a mixture of pxy and pz hole states and we will show that these contributions can be distinguished only with an experimental energy resolution better than 0.5 eV. For conventional TEM/STEM instruments with an energy resolution of ~1.0 eV the pre-peak still contains valuable information about the local charge carrier concentration that can be probed by core-loss EELS. By considering the scattering momentum transfer for different crystal orientations, it is possible to analytically separate pxy and pz components from of the experimental spectra With careful experiments and analysis, EELS can be a unique tool measuring the superconducting properties of MgB2, doped with various elements for improved transport properties on a sub-nanometer scale.

Valence electron distribution in MgB2 studied by accurate diffraction measurements and first principle calculations

We use synchrotron x-ray and precision electron diffraction techniques to determine accurately the structure factors of selected reflections that are sensitive to the valence electron distribution in the superconductor MgB2. These values deviate significantly from calculated structure factors using the scattering factors of free atoms, but agree well with our calculated structure factors based on density functional theory. Having experimentally established the reliability of our firstprinciple calculated structure factors, we present electron density maps of the redistribution of the valence electrons that takes place when hypothetical free atoms of Mg and B in MgB2 interact to form the real crystal.

Transmission-electron-microscopy study of charge-stripe order in La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4)

We characterize the local structure and correlations of charge stripes in La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4) using transmission-electron microscopy. We present direct evidence that the stripe modulation is indeed one-dimensional within each NiO(2) plane. Furthermore, we show that individual stripes tend to be either site-centered or bond-centered, with a bias towards the former. The spacing between stripes often fluctuates about the mean, contributing to a certain degree of frustration of the approximate body-centered stacking along the c-axis. These results confirm ideas inferred from previous neutron-diffraction measurements on doped nickelates, and demonstrate that charge-stripe order is quite different from the conventional concept of charge-density-wave order.
