Primitive tuning for non-hyperbolic polynomials

Let $f_0$ be a polynomial of degree $d_1+d_2$ with a periodic critical point $0$ of multiplicity $d_1-1$ and a Julia critical point of multiplicity $d_2$. We show that if $f_0$ is primitive, free of neutral periodic points and non-renormalizable at the Julia critical point, then the straightening map $χ_{f_0}:\mathcal C(λ_{f_0}) \to \mathcal C_{d_1}$ is a bijection. More precisely, $f^{m_0}$ has a polynomial-like restriction which is hybrid equivalent to some polynomial in $\mathcal C_{d_1}$ for each map $f \in \mathcal C(λ_{f_0})$, where $m_0$ is the period of $0$ under $f_0$. On the other hand, $f_0$ can be tuned with any polynomial $g\in \mathcal C_{d_1}$. As a consequence, we conclude that the straightening map $χ_{f_0}$ is a homeomorphism from $\mathcal C(λ_{f_0})$ onto the Mandelbrot set when $d_1=2$. This together with the main result in [SW] solve the problem for primitive tuning for cubic polynomials with connected Julia sets thoroughly.

The full renormalization horseshoe for multimodal maps

In this paper, we consider the renormalization operator $\mathcal R$ for multimodal maps. We prove the renormalization operator $\mathcal R$ is a self-homeomorphism on any totally $\mathcal R$-invariant set. As a corollary, we prove the existence of the full renormalization horseshoe for multimodal maps.

Primitive tuning via quasiconformal surgery

Using quasiconformal surgery, we prove that any primitive, postcritically-finite hyperbolic polynomial can be tuned with an arbitrary generalized polynomial with non-escaping critical points, generalizing a result of Douady-Hubbard for quadratic polynomials to the case of higher degree polynomials. This solves affirmatively a conjecture by Inou and Kiwi on surjectivity of the renormalization operator on higher degree polynomials in one complex variable.

Photon-Dressed Bloch-Siegert Shift in an Ultrastrongly Coupled Circuit Quantum Electrodynamical System

A cavity quantum electrodynamical (QED) system beyond the strong-coupling regime is expected to exhibit intriguing quantum phenomena. Here we report a direct measurement of the photon-dressed qubit transition frequencies up to four photons by harnessing the same type of state transitions in an ultrastrongly coupled circuit-QED system realized by inductively coupling a superconducting flux qubit to a coplanar-waveguide resonator. This demonstrates a convincing observation of the photon-dressed Bloch-Siegert shift in the ultrastrongly coupled quantum system. Moreover, our results show that the photon-dressed Bloch-Siegert shift becomes more pronounced as the photon number increases, which is a characteristic of the quantum Rabi model.

Resilience of the superradiant phase against $\mathbf {A^2}$ effects in the quantum Rabi dimer

We explore the quantum criticality of a two-site model combining quantum Rabi models with hopping interaction. Through a combination of analytical and numerical approaches, we find that the model allows the appearance of a superradiant quantum phase transition (QPT) even in the presence of strong $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms, preventing single-site superradiance. In the two-site model the effect of $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms can be surmounted by the photon delocalization from hopping, and a reversed superradiant QPT occurs as a consequence of the competition between $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms and the hopping interaction. We characterize the phase diagram and scaling functions, and extract the critical exponents in the vicinity of the critical point, thus establishing the universal behavior of the second-order phase transition. Remarkably the effective hopping strength will be enhanced if more cavities are cascaded. We also prove that the multi-qubit counterpart of the quantum Rabi dimer, i.e., the Dicke dimer, has the same properties in beating the $\mathbf{A}^2$ effect. Our work provides a way to the study of phase transitions in presence of the $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms and offers the prospect of investigating quantum-criticality physics and quantum devices in many-body systems.

Variational generalized rotating-wave approximation in the two-qubit quantum Rabi model

We present an analytical method for the two-qubit quantum Rabi model. While still operating in the frame of the generalized rotating-wave approximation (GRWA), our method further embraces the idea of introducing variational parameters. The optimal value of the variational parameter is determined by minimizing the energy function of the ground state. Comparing with numerical exact results, we show that our method evidently improves the accuracy of the conventional GRWA in calculating fundamental physical quantities, such as energy spectra, mean photon number, and dynamics. Interestingly, the accuracy of our method allows us to reproduce the asymptotic behavior of mean photon number in large frequency ratio for the ground state and investigate the quasi-periodical structure of the time evolution, which are incapable of being predicted by the GRWA. The applicable parameter ranges cover the ultrastrong coupling regime, which will be helpful to recent experiments.

A helical-shape scintillating fiber trigger and tracker system for the DarkLight experiment and beyond

The search for new physics beyond the Standard Model has interesting possibilities at low energies. For example, the recent 6.8$σ$ anomaly reported in the invariant mass of $e^+e^-$ pairs from $^8\text{Be}$ nuclear transitions and the discrepancy between predicted and measured values of muon g-2 give strong motivations for a protophobic fifth-force model. At low energies, the electromagnetic interaction is well understood and produces straightforward final states, making it an excellent probe of such models. However, to achieve the required precision, an experiment must address the substantially higher rate of electromagnetic backgrounds. In this paper, we present the results of simulation studies of a trigger system, motivated by the DarkLight experiment, using helical-shape scintillating fibers in a solenoidal magnetic field to veto electron-proton elastic scattering and the associated radiative processes. We also assess the performance of a tracking detector for lepton final states using scintillating fibers in the same setup.

Quantum coherence in a compass chain under an alternating magnetic field

We investigate quantum phase transitions and quantum coherence in a quantum compass chain under an alternating transverse magnetic field. The model can be analytically solved by the Jordan-Wigner transformation and this solution shows that it is equivalent to a two-component one-dimensional (1D) Fermi gas on a lattice. We explore mutual effects of the staggered magnetic interaction and multi-site interactions on the energy spectra and analyze the ground state phase diagram. We use quantum coherence measures to identify the quantum phase transitions. Our results show that $l_1$ norm of coherence fails to detect faithfully the quantum critical points separating a gapped phase from a gapless phase, which can be pinpointed exactly by relative entropy of coherence. Jensen-Shannon divergence is somewhat obscure at exception points. We also propose an experimental realization of such a 1D system using superconducting quantum circuits.

Quantum criticality and state engineering in the simulated anisotropic quantum Rabi model

Promising applications of the anisotropic quantum Rabi model (AQRM) in broad parameter ranges are explored, which is realized with superconducting flux qubits simultaneously driven by two-tone time-dependent magnetic fields. Regarding the quantum phase transitions (QPTs), with assistant of fidelity susceptibility, we extract the scaling functions and the critical exponents, with which the universal scaling of the cumulant ratio is captured with rescaling of the parameters due to the anisotropy. Moreover, a fixed point of the cumulant ratio is predicted at the critical point of the AQRM. In respect to quantum information tasks, the generation of the macroscopic Schrödinger cat states and quantum controlled phase gates are investigated in the degenerate case of the AQRM, whose performance is also investigated by numerical calculation with practical parameters. Therefore, our results pave a way to explore distinct features of the AQRM in circuit QED systems for QPTs, quantum simulations and quantum information processings.

Quantum phase transitions in spin-1 XXZ chains with rhombic single-ion anisotropy

We explore the fidelity susceptibility and the quantum coherence along with the entanglement entropy in the ground-state of one-dimensional spin-1 XXZ chains with the rhombic single-ion anisotropy. By using the techniques of density matrix renormalization group, effects of the rhombic single-ion anisotropy on a few information theoretical measures are investigated, such as the fidelity susceptibility, the quantum coherence and the entanglement entropy. Their relations with the quantum phase transitions are also analyzed. The phase transitions from the Y-Néel phase to the Large-$E_x$ or the Haldane phase can be well characterized by the fidelity susceptibility. The second-order derivative of the ground-state energy indicates all the transitions are of second order. We also find that the quantum coherence, the entanglement entropy, the Schmidt gap can be used to detect the critical points of quantum phase transitions. Conclusions drawn from these quantum information observables agree well with each other. Finally we provide a ground-state phase diagram as functions of the exchange anisotropy $Δ$ and the rhombic single-ion anisotropy $E$.

Spectral analyses of trans- and cis-DOCO transients via comb spectroscopy

We use time-resolved direct frequency comb spectroscopy in the mid-infrared to obtain high-resolution rovibrational spectra of products produced from the OD+CO reaction. In this work, we present spectral analyses for isotopologues of the transient DOCO radicals from this reaction in the OD stretch region. The analyses were performed with aid of two different theoretical approaches based on both perturbation theory and variational calculations used for prediction of rovibrational spectra of polyatomic molecules. We discuss the advantages and challenges of our current approach for studying spectroscopy and dynamics of transient molecules.

Conditional displacement interaction in ultrastrong-coupling regime

We investigate the realization of conditional displacement interaction in the transversal direction in ultrastrongly coupled circuit quantum electrodynamics by adjusting parameters of external magnetic fields. The special interaction is derived in the system of charge qubit(s) coupled to a LC resonator. We consolidate the implementation of quantum gates and the generation of superposed coherent states based on the transversal conditional displacement interaction numerically. The conditional displacement interaction in the ultrastrong coupling regime enhances quantum process to operate at the time scale of nanoseconds.

Single-photon-driven high-order sideband transitions in an ultrastrongly coupled circuit quantum electrodynamics system

We report the experimental observation of high-order sideband transitions at the single-photon level in a quantum circuit system of a flux qubit ultrastrongly coupled to a coplanar waveguide resonator. With the coupling strength reaching 10% of the resonator's fundamental frequency, we obtain clear signatures of higher-order red and first-order blue-sideband transitions, which are mainly due to the ultrastrong Rabi coupling. Our observation advances the understanding of ultrastrongly-coupled systems and paves the way to study high-order processes in the quantum Rabi model at the single-photon level.

Holonomic quantum computation in the ultrastrong-coupling regime of circuit QED

We present an experimentally feasible scheme to implement holonomic quantum computation in the ultrastrong-coupling regime of light-matter interaction. The large anharmonicity and the Z2 symmetry of the quantum Rabi model allow us to build an effective three-level Λ-structured artificial atom for quantum computation. The proposed physical implementation includes two gradiometric flux qubits and two microwave resonators where single-qubit gates are realized by a two-tone driving on one physical qubit, and a two-qubit gate is achieved with a time-dependent coupling between the field quadratures of both resonators. Our work paves the way for scalable holonomic quantum computation in ultrastrongly coupled systems.

Bridging the gap between the Jaynes-Cummings and Rabi models using an intermediate rotating wave approximation

We present a novel approach called the intermediate rotating wave approximation (IRWA), which employs a time-averaging method to encapsulate the dynamics of light-matter interaction from strong to ultrastrong coupling regime. In contrast to the ordinary rotating wave approximation, this method addresses the co-rotating and counter-rotating terms separately to trace their physical consequences individually, and thus establishes the continuity between the Jaynes-Cummings model and the quantum Rabi model. We investigate IRWA in near resonance and large detuning cases. Our IRWA not only agrees well with both models in their respective coupling strengths, but also offers a good explanation for their differences.

Excitation of two atoms by a propagating single photon pulse

We describe the interaction of two two-level atoms in free space with propagating modes of the quantized electromagnetic field, using the time-dependent Heisenberg-Langevin method. For single- photon pulses, we consider the effect of the pulse's spatial and temporal profiles on the atomic excitation. In particular, we find the ideal shape for a pulse to put exactly one excitation in any desired state of the bi-atomic system. Furthermore, we analyze the differences in the atomic dynamics between the cases of Fock state pulses and coherent state pulses.

Excitation of a single atom with exponentially rising light pulses

We investigate the interaction between a single atom and optical pulses in a coherent state with a controlled temporal envelope. In a comparison between a rising exponential and a square envelope, we show that the rising exponential envelope leads to a higher excitation probability for fixed low average photon numbers, in accordance to a time-reversed Weisskopf-Wigner model. We characterize the atomic transition dynamics for a wide range of the average photon numbers, and are able to saturate the optical transition of a single atom with ~50 photons in a pulse by a strong focusing technique. For photon numbers of ~1000 in a 15ns long pulse, we clearly observe Rabi oscillations.
