Invariance principle for wave propagation inside inhomogeneously disordered materials

Disorder is more the rule than the exception in natural and synthetic materials. Nonetheless, wave propagation within inhomogeneously disordered materials has received scant attention. We combine microwave experiments and theory to find the spatial variation of generic wave propagation quantities in inhomogeneously disordered materials. We demonstrate that wave statistics within samples of any dimension are independent of the detailed structure of a material and depend only on the net strengths of distributed scattering and reflection between the observation point and each of the boundaries.

Time delay in a disordered topological system

The discovery of topological insulators has opened new prospects for robust signal transport for electronic, phononic, and photonic devices. Though transport of topological protected edge states is robust to disorder, large fluctuations and lengthened average delay time are observed. Here, we consider a quasi-1d system following the Haldane model and generalize the idea of eigenchannel time delay to the topological system. Eigenchannel time delay indicates the excited density of states for the configuration and relates to the intensity integral inside the system. Taking advantage of this property, we point out a practical way to extract the central frequency and linewidth of localized modes excited in the topological system. This work links the fluctuation of time delay to the strength of disorder and discusses the scaling of time delay.

Quantum Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Networks

The study of quantum generative models is well-motivated, not only because of its importance in quantum machine learning and quantum chemistry but also because of the perspective of its implementation on near-term quantum machines. Inspired by previous studies on the adversarial training of classical and quantum generative models, we propose the first design of quantum Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Networks (WGANs), which has been shown to improve the robustness and the scalability of the adversarial training of quantum generative models even on noisy quantum hardware. Specifically, we propose a definition of the Wasserstein semimetric between quantum data, which inherits a few key theoretical merits of its classical counterpart. We also demonstrate how to turn the quantum Wasserstein semimetric into a concrete design of quantum WGANs that can be efficiently implemented on quantum machines. Our numerical study, via classical simulation of quantum systems, shows the more robust and scalable numerical performance of our quantum WGANs over other quantum GAN proposals. As a surprising application, our quantum WGAN has been used to generate a 3-qubit quantum circuit of ~50 gates that well approximates a 3-qubit 1-d Hamiltonian simulation circuit that requires over 10k gates using standard techniques.

Quantum Laplacian Eigenmap

Laplacian eigenmap algorithm is a typical nonlinear model for dimensionality reduction in classical machine learning. We propose an efficient quantum Laplacian eigenmap algorithm to exponentially speed up the original counterparts. In our work, we demonstrate that the Hermitian chain product proposed in quantum linear discriminant analysis (arXiv:1510.00113,2015) can be applied to implement quantum Laplacian eigenmap algorithm. While classical Laplacian eigenmap algorithm requires polynomial time to solve the eigenvector problem, our algorithm is able to exponentially speed up nonlinear dimensionality reduction.
