Geodesic photon coupling and non-Hermitian exceptional point of microcavities on topologically curved space

Asymmetric microcavities supporting Whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) are of great significance for on-chip optical information processing. We define asymmetric microcavities on topologically curved surfaces, where the geodesic light trajectories completely reconstruct the cavity mode features. The quality factors of the lossy chaotic and island modes in flat cavities can be increased by up to ~200 times by the space curvature. Strong and weak coupling between modes of very different origins occur when the space curvature brings them into resonance, leading to a fine tailoring of the cavity photon energy and lifetime. Finally, we prove that by varying the overall loss, an exceptional point can be clearly observed at which both the cavity photon energy and lifetime become degenerate. Our work is at the crosspoint of optical chaotic dynamics, non-Hermitian physics and geodesic optical devices, and would open the novel area of geodesic microcavity photonics.

Hierarchy of Nonlinear Entanglement Dynamics for Continuous Variables

The entanglement produced by a bilinear Hamiltonian in continuous variables has been thoroughly studied and widely used. In contrast, the physics of entanglement resulting from nonlinear interaction described by partially degenerate high-order Hamiltonians remains unclear. Here, we derive a hierarchy of sufficient and necessary conditions for the positive-partial-transposition separability of bipartite nonlinear quantum states. The proposed criteria detect the nonpositive-partial-transposition inseparability of higher-order moments of states, which provides a systematic framework for the characterization of this kind of entanglement. Through numerical simulation of cubic and quartic Hamiltonians, we demonstrate the existence and competition of a hierarchy of entanglement witnesses, revealing the mechanism underlying such entanglement. Our results may provide a new direction in continuous variable quantum information processing.

Frequency multiplexed entanglement for continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Quantum key distribution with continuous variables already uses advantageous high-speed single-mode homodyne detection with low electronic noise at room temperature. Together with continuous-variable information encoding to nonclassical states, the distance for secure key transmission through lossy channels can approach 300 km in current optical fibers. Such protocols tolerate higher channel noise and also limited data processing efficiency compared to coherent-state protocols. The secret key rate can be further increased by increasing the system clock rates, and, further, by a suitable frequency-mode-multiplexing of optical transmission channels. However, the multiplexed modes couple together in the source or any other part of the protocol. Therefore, multiplexed communication will experience crosstalk and the gain can be minuscule. Advantageously, homodyne detectors allow solving this crosstalk problem by proper data processing. It is a potential advantage over protocols with single-photon detectors, which do not enable similar data processing techniques. We demonstrate the positive outcome of this methodology on the experimentally characterized frequency-multiplexed entangled source of femtosecond optical pulses with natural crosstalk between eight entangled pairs of modes. As the main result, we predict almost 15-fold higher secret key rate. This experimental test and analysis of frequency-multiplexed entanglement source opens the way for the field implementation of high-capacity quantum key distribution with continuous variables.

Ray dynamics of whispering-gallery modes in curved space

Microcavities supporting Whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) are of great significance for on-chip optical information processing, which is frequently analyzed using ray dynamics that conventionally involves straight light trajectories in flat space. We develop a novel mathematical model of ray dynamics that allows investigating photon movement in WGM-microcavities defined on curved surfaces, which consists of curved or twisted light trajectories following the geodesic lines of the space. We show that the resulting ray dynamics differs dramatically from those in flat microcavities, and in various manners depending on whether the curved surface can be unfolded to flat. Our methods suggest a redefinition of the WGM symmetry in curved space and provides a universal tool for analyzing three-dimensional (3D) photonic circuits containing curved structures with boundaries.

Laguerre-Gaussian transform for rotating image processing

Rotation is a common motional form in nature, existing from atoms and molecules, industrial turbines to astronomical objects. However, it still lacks an efficient and reliable method for real-time image processing of a fast-rotating object. Since the Fourier spectrum of a rotating object changes rapidly, the traditional Fourier transform (FT) techniques become extremely complicated and time consuming. Here, we propose a Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) transform to analyze the rotating object with LG-mode basis. The rotation operation provides a feasible way to acquire LG spectrum, which is similar to the function of lens in FT. Particularly, the obtained LG spectrum does not change even the object working at a high rotating speed. By analyzing the LG spectrum, one can perform image processing such as reconstruction, edge enhancement, and pattern replication. Such LG transform provides an efficient and convenient way to real-time monitor and analyze a fast-rotating object in scientific research and industry.

Versatile Multipartite Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Steering via a Quantum Frequency Comb

Multipartite Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering is an essential resource for quantum communication networks where the reliability of equipment at all of the nodes cannot be fully trusted. Here, we present experimental generation of a highly versatile and flexible repository of multipartite steering using an optical frequency comb and ultrafast pulse shaping. Simply modulating the optical spectral resolution of the detection system using the pulse shaper, this scheme is able to produce on-demand 4, 8 and 16-mode Gaussian steering without changing the photonics architecture. We find that the steerability increases with higher spectral resolution. For 16-mode state, we identify as many as 65534 possible bipartition steering existing in this intrinsic multimode quantum resource, and demonstrate that the prepared state steerability is robust to mode losses. Moreover, we verify four types of monogamy relations of Gaussian steering and demonstrate strong violation for one of them. Our method offers a powerful foundation for constructing quantum networks in real-world scenario.

Quantum networks generation based on four-wave mixing

We present a scheme to realize versatile quantum networks by cascading several four-wave mixing (FWM) processes in warm rubidium vapors. FWM is an efficient $χ^{(3)}$ nonlinear process, already used as a resource for multimode quantum state generation and which has been proved to be a promising candidate for applications to quantum information processing. We analyze theoretically the multimode output of cascaded FWM systems, derive its independent squeezed modes and show how, with phase controlled homodyne detection and digital post-processing, they can be turned into a versatile source of continuous variable cluster states.

Full characterization of a highly multimode entangled state embedded in an optical frequency comb using pulse shaping

We present a detailed analysis of the multimode quantum state embedded in an optical frequency comb generated by a Synchronously Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillator (SPOPO). The full covariance matrix of the state is obtained with homodyne detection where the local oscillator is spectrally controlled with pulse shaping techniques. The resulting matrix reveals genuine multipartite entanglement. Additionally, the beam is comprised of several independent eigenmodes that correspond to specific pulse shapes. The experimental data is confirmed with numerical simulations. Finally, the potential to create continuous-variable cluster states from the quantum comb is analyzed. Multiple cluster states are shown to be simultaneously embedded in the SPOPO state, and these states can be revealed by a suitable basis change applied to the measured covariance matrix.
