Fermion Mass Hierarchies and Flavour Mixing from a Minimal Discrete Symmetry

We construct a simple model of fermion masses based on a spontaneously broken S3 X Z3 flavour group. At the leading order, in the neutrino sector S3 is broken down to a ν_μ-ν_τparity subgroup that enforces a maximal atmospheric mixing angle and a vanishing θ_{13}. In the charged lepton sector the ν_μ-ν_τparity is maximally broken and the resulting mass matrix is nearly diagonal. The charged lepton mass hierarchy is automatically reproduced by the S3 symmetry breaking parameter alone. A careful analysis shows that, after the inclusion of all relevant subleading effects, the model predicts θ_{23}=π/4+O(λ_c^2) and θ_{13}=O(λ_c^2), λ_c denoting the Cabibbo angle. A simple extension to the quark sector is also illustrated, where the mass spectrum and the mixing angles are naturally reproduced, with the exception of the mixing angle between the first two generations, that requires a small accidental enhancement.

Tri-bimaximal Neutrino Mixing from Orbifolding

We show that the A4 discrete symmetry that naturally leads to tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing can be simply obtained as a result of an orbifolding starting from a model in 6 dimensions. This particular orbifolding has four fixed points where 4 dimensional branes are located and the tetrahedral symmetry of A4 connects these branes. In this approach A4 appears after the reduction from six to four dimensions as a remnant of the 6D space-time symmetry. A previously discussed supersymmetric version of A4 is reinterpreted along these lines.

Fermion masses and proton decay in a minimal five-dimensional SO(10) model

We propose a minimal SO(10) model in 5 space-time dimensions. The single extra spatial dimension is compactified on the orbifold S^1/(Z_2 x Z_2') reducing the gauge group to that of Pati-Salam. The breaking down to the standard model group is obtained through an ordinary Higgs mechanism taking place at the Pati-Salam brane, giving rise to a proper gauge coupling unification. We achieve a correct description of fermion masses and mixing angles by describing first and second generations as bulk fields, and by embedding the third generation into four multiplets located at the Pati-Salam brane. The Yukawa sector is simple and compact and predicts a neutrino spectrum of normal hierarchy type. Concerning proton decay, dimension five operators are absent and the essentially unique localization of matter multiplets implies that the minimal couplings between the super-heavy gauge bosons and matter fields are vanishing. Non-minimal interactions are allowed but the resulting dimension six operators describing proton decay are too suppressed to produce observable effects, even in future, super-massive detectors.

Gauge coupling Unification and SO(10) in 5D

We analyze the gauge unification in minimal supersymmetric SO(10) grand unified theories in 5 dimensions. The single extra spatial dimension is compactified on the orbifold S^1/(Z_2 x Z_2') reducing the gauge group to that of Pati-Salam SU(4)_c x SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R. The Standard Model gauge group is achieved by the further brane-localized Higgs mechanism on one of the fixed points. There are two main different approaches developed in literature. Higgs mechanism can take place on the Pati Salam brane, or on the SO(10) preserving brane. We show, both analytically and numerically, that in the first case a natural and succesfull gauge coupling unification can be achieved, while the second case is highly disfavoured. For completeness, we consider either the case in which the brane breaking scale is near the cutoff scale or the case in which it is lower than the compactification scale.

Proton Lifetime from SU(5) Unification in Extra Dimensions

We provide detailed estimates of the proton lifetime in the context of simple supersymmetric SU(5) grand unified models with an extra compact spatial dimension, described by the orbifold S/(Z_2 x Z_2') and by a large compactification scale Mc. We focus on a class of models where the grand unified symmetry is broken by the compactification mechanism and where baryon violation proceeds mainly through gauge vector boson exchange so that the proton lifetime scales as the fourth power of Mc. We carefully compute Mc from a next-to-leading analysis of gauge coupling unification and we find that Mc can only be predicted up to an overall factor one hundred. The simplest model, where the dominant decay mode is (pi^0 e+) and has no flavour suppression, is strongly constrained by existing data, but not totally ruled out. We also analyze models where some of the matter fields are localized in the extra space and proton decay is flavour suppressed. In models associated to anarchy in the neutrino sector the preferred decay channel is (K+ {\bar ν}) and the lifetime can be within the reach of the next generation of experiments.

Constraints on neutrino masses from leptogenesis models

Upper bounds on the CP asymmetry relevant for leptogenesis are reexamined and found weaker than in previous literature, both for hierarchical and for quasi-degenerate right-handed neutrinos. Successful leptogenesis implies the usual lower bound on right-handed neutrino masses, and an upper bound on left-handed neutrino masses (which we obtain to be 0.15eV at 3sigma) only if right-handed neutrinos are assumed to be much more hierarchical than left-handed neutrinos. Otherwise both bounds can be considerably relaxed. The constraint on light neutrino masses varies assuming different interpretations of why neutrinos should be quasi-degenerate. With conservative assumptions, we find that a mild quasi-degeneracy allows neutrinos heavier than an eV compatibly with leptogenesis. We also extend computations of thermal leptogenesis to an alternative model of neutrino mass mediated by fermion triplets which was never considered so far for leptogenesis. Leptogenesis can be successful despite the effect of gauge interactions, resulting in only slightly stronger constraints on neutrino masses.

On orbifold theory and N=2, D=5 gauged supergravity

We have studied the most general N=2 supergravity in five dimensions in context with the orbifold theory based on $M_4 \times S^1/Z_2$. Various ways to treat the supersymmetry with singular sources placed in orbifold fixed points were proposed in past. Supersymmetric branes were consistently introduced in a bulk where a gauged supergravity was present. In this paper we find that in the $N=2,D=5$ supergravity with general gauging, the possibility to obtain a supersymmetric brane world is constrained. Imposing the compatibility of supersymmetry transformation rules with the orbifold condition, we find the necessary and sufficient condition to obtain supersymmetric branes and bulk independently. We comment that the same condition guarantees naturally the presence of singular BPS solutions.
