Exploring Driving Behavior for Autonomous Vehicles Based on Gramian Angular Field Vision Transformer

Effective classification of autonomous vehicle (AV) driving behavior emerges as a critical area for diagnosing AV operation faults, enhancing autonomous driving algorithms, and reducing accident rates. This paper presents the Gramian Angular Field Vision Transformer (GAF-ViT) model, designed to analyze AV driving behavior. The proposed GAF-ViT model consists of three key components: GAF Transformer Module, Channel Attention Module, and Multi-Channel ViT Module. These modules collectively convert representative sequences of multivariate behavior into multi-channel images and employ image recognition techniques for behavior classification. A channel attention mechanism is applied to multi-channel images to discern the impact of various driving behavior features. Experimental evaluation on the Waymo Open Dataset of trajectories demonstrates that the proposed model achieves state-of-the-art performance. Furthermore, an ablation study effectively substantiates the efficacy of individual modules within the model.

An Interface Method for Co-simulation of EMT Model and Shifted Frequency EMT Model Based on Rotational Invariance Techniques

The shifted frequency-based electromagnetic transient (SFEMT) simulation has greatly improved the computational efficiency of traditional electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation for the ac grid. This letter proposes a novel interface for the co-simulation of the SFEMT model and the traditional EMT model. The general form of SFEMT modeling and the principle of analytical signal construction are first derived. Then, an interface for the co-simulation of EMT and SFEMT simulation is proposed based on rotational invariance techniques. Theoretical analyses and test results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

$X(3872)$ Relevant $D\bar{D}^*$ Scattering in $N_f=2$ Lattice QCD

We study the $S$-wave $D\bar{D}^*(I=0)$ scattering at four different pion masses $m_π$ ranging from 250 MeV to 417 MeV from $N_f=2$ lattice QCD. Three energy levels $E_{2,3,4}$ are extracted at each $m_π$. The analysis of $E_{2,3}$ using the effective range expansion (ERE) comes out with a shallow bound state below the $D\bar{D}^*$ threshold, and the phase shifts at $E_{3,4}$ indicate the possible existence of a resonance near 4.0 GeV. We also perform a joint analysis to $E_{2,3,4}$ through the $K$-matrix parameterization of the scattering amplitude. In this way, we observe a $D\bar{D}^*$ bound state whose properties are almost the same as that from the ERE analysis. At each $m_π$, this joint analysis also results in a resonance pole with a mass slightly above 4.0 GeV and a width around 40-60 MeV, which are compatible with the properties of the newly observed $χ_{c1}(4010)$ by LHCb. More scrutinized lattice QCD calculations are desired to check the existence of this resonance.

SAM2-UNet: Segment Anything 2 Makes Strong Encoder for Natural and Medical Image Segmentation

Image segmentation plays an important role in vision understanding. Recently, the emerging vision foundation models continuously achieved superior performance on various tasks. Following such success, in this paper, we prove that the Segment Anything Model 2 (SAM2) can be a strong encoder for U-shaped segmentation models. We propose a simple but effective framework, termed SAM2-UNet, for versatile image segmentation. Specifically, SAM2-UNet adopts the Hiera backbone of SAM2 as the encoder, while the decoder uses the classic U-shaped design. Additionally, adapters are inserted into the encoder to allow parameter-efficient fine-tuning. Preliminary experiments on various downstream tasks, such as camouflaged object detection, salient object detection, marine animal segmentation, mirror detection, and polyp segmentation, demonstrate that our SAM2-UNet can simply beat existing specialized state-of-the-art methods without bells and whistles. Dynamics of Nanoscale Phase Decomposition in Laser Ablation

Femtosecond laser ablation is a process that bears both fundamental physics interest and has wide industrial applications. For decades, the lack of probes on the relevant time and length scales has prevented access to the highly nonequilibrium phase decomposition processes triggered by laser excitation. Enabled by the unprecedented intense femtosecond X-ray pulses delivered by an X-ray free electron laser, we report here results of time-resolved small angle scattering measurements on the dynamics of nanoscale phase decomposition in thin gold films upon femtosecond laser-induced ablation. By analyzing the features imprinted onto the small angle diffraction patterns, the transient heterogeneous density distributions within the ablation plume as obtained from molecular dynamics simulations get direct experimental confirmation.

Rest-Frame Optical Spectroscopy of Ten z $\sim$ 2 Weak Emission-Line Quasars

We present near-infrared spectroscopy of ten weak emission-line quasars (WLQs) at redshifts of $z\sim2$, obtained with the Palomar 200-inch Hale Telescope. WLQs are an exceptional population of type 1 quasars that exhibit weak or no broad emission lines in the ultraviolet (e.g., the C IV $λ1549$ line), and they display remarkable X-ray properties. We derive H$β$-based single-epoch virial black-hole masses (median value $\rm 1.7 \times 10^{9} M_{\odot}$) and Eddington ratios (median value $0.5)$ for our sources. We confirm the previous finding that WLQ H$β$ lines, as a major low-ionization line, are not significantly weak compared to typical quasars. The most prominent feature of the WLQ optical spectra is the universally weak/absent [O III] $λ5007$ emission. They also display stronger optical Fe II emission than typical quasars. Our results favor the super-Eddington accretion scenario for WLQs, where the weak lines are a result of a soft ionizing continuum; the geometrically thick inner accretion disk and/or its associated outflow is responsible for obscuring the nuclear high-energy radiation and producing the soft ionizing continuum. We also report candidate extreme [O III] outflows (blueshifts of $\approx 500$ and $\rm 4900 km s^{-1}$) in one object.

Learning to Adapt Foundation Model DINOv2 for Capsule Endoscopy Diagnosis

Foundation models have become prominent in computer vision, achieving notable success in various tasks. However, their effectiveness largely depends on pre-training with extensive datasets. Applying foundation models directly to small datasets of capsule endoscopy images from scratch is challenging. Pre-training on broad, general vision datasets is crucial for successfully fine-tuning our model for specific tasks. In this work, we introduce a simplified approach called Adapt foundation models with a low-rank adaptation (LoRA) technique for easier customization. Our method, inspired by the DINOv2 foundation model, applies low-rank adaptation learning to tailor foundation models for capsule endoscopy diagnosis effectively. Unlike traditional fine-tuning methods, our strategy includes LoRA layers designed to absorb specific surgical domain knowledge. During the training process, we keep the main model (the backbone encoder) fixed and focus on optimizing the LoRA layers and the disease classification component. We tested our method on two publicly available datasets for capsule endoscopy disease classification. The results were impressive, with our model achieving 97.75% accuracy on the Kvasir-Capsule dataset and 98.81% on the Kvasirv2 dataset. Our solution demonstrates that foundation models can be adeptly adapted for capsule endoscopy diagnosis, highlighting that mere reliance on straightforward fine-tuning or pre-trained models from general computer vision tasks is inadequate for such specific applications.

surveygenmod2: A SAS macro for estimating complex survey adjusted generalized linear models and Wald-type tests

surveygenmod2 builds on the macro written by da Silva (2017) for generalized linear models under complex survey designs. The updated macro fixed several minor bugs we encountered while updating the macro for use in SAS\textregistered. We added additional features for conducting basic Wald-type tests on groups of parameters based on the estimated regression coefficients and parameter variance-covariance matrix.

Directly observing atomic-scale relaxations of a glass forming liquid using femtosecond X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy

Glass forming liquids exhibit structural relaxation behaviors, reflecting underlying atomic rearrangements on a wide range of timescales. These behaviors play a crucial role in determining many material properties. However, the relaxation processes on the atomic scale are not well understood due to the experimental difficulties in directly characterizing the evolving correlations of atomic order in disordered systems. Here, taking the model system Ge15Te85, we demonstrate an experimental approach that probes the relaxation dynamics by scattering the coherent X-ray pulses with femtosecond duration produced by X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs). By collecting the summed speckle patterns from two rapidly successive, nearly identical X-ray pulses generated using a split-delay system, we can extract the contrast decay of speckle patterns originating from sample dynamics and observe the full decorrelation of local order on the sub-picosecond timescale. This provides the direct atomic-level evidence of fragile liquid behavior of Ge15Te85. Our results demonstrate the strategy for XFEL-based X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS), attaining femtosecond temporal and atomic-scale spatial resolutions. This twelve orders of magnitude extension from the millisecond regime of synchrotron-based XPCS opens a new avenue of experimental studies of relaxation dynamics in liquids, glasses, and other highly disordered systems.

An Intelligent End-to-End Neural Architecture Search Framework for Electricity Forecasting Model Development

Recent years have witnessed exponential growth in developing deep learning (DL) models for time-series electricity forecasting in power systems. However, most of the proposed models are designed based on the designers' inherent knowledge and experience without elaborating on the suitability of the proposed neural architectures. Moreover, these models cannot be self-adjusted to dynamically changed data patterns due to the inflexible design of their structures. Although several recent studies have considered the application of the neural architecture search (NAS) technique for obtaining a network with an optimized structure in the electricity forecasting sector, their training process is computationally expensive and their search strategies are not flexible, indicating that the NAS application in this area is still at an infancy stage. In this study, we propose an intelligent automated architecture search (IAAS) framework for the development of time-series electricity forecasting models. The proposed framework contains three primary components, i.e., network function-preserving transformation operation, reinforcement learning (RL)-based network transformation control, and heuristic network screening, which aim to improve the search quality of a network structure. After conducting comprehensive experiments on two publicly-available electricity load datasets and two wind power datasets, we demonstrate that the proposed IAAS framework significantly outperforms the ten existing models or methods in terms of forecasting accuracy and stability. Finally, we perform an ablation experiment to showcase the importance of critical components in the proposed IAAS framework in improving forecasting accuracy.

Neural Proto-Language Reconstruction

Proto-form reconstruction has been a painstaking process for linguists. Recently, computational models such as RNN and Transformers have been proposed to automate this process. We take three different approaches to improve upon previous methods, including data augmentation to recover missing reflexes, adding a VAE structure to the Transformer model for proto-to-language prediction, and using a neural machine translation model for the reconstruction task. We find that with the additional VAE structure, the Transformer model has a better performance on the WikiHan dataset, and the data augmentation step stabilizes the training.

Resolve Domain Conflicts for Generalizable Remote Physiological Measurement

Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) technology has become increasingly popular due to its non-invasive monitoring of various physiological indicators, making it widely applicable in multimedia interaction, healthcare, and emotion analysis. Existing rPPG methods utilize multiple datasets for training to enhance the generalizability of models. However, they often overlook the underlying conflict issues across different datasets, such as (1) label conflict resulting from different phase delays between physiological signal labels and face videos at the instance level, and (2) attribute conflict stemming from distribution shifts caused by head movements, illumination changes, skin types, etc. To address this, we introduce the DOmain-HArmonious framework (DOHA). Specifically, we first propose a harmonious phase strategy to eliminate uncertain phase delays and preserve the temporal variation of physiological signals. Next, we design a harmonious hyperplane optimization that reduces irrelevant attribute shifts and encourages the model's optimization towards a global solution that fits more valid scenarios. Our experiments demonstrate that DOHA significantly improves the performance of existing methods under multiple protocols. Our code is available at https://github.com/SWY666/rPPG-DOHA.

Low-energy spin dynamics in a Kitaev material Na3Ni2BiO6 investigated by NMR

We performed 23Na NMR and magnetization measurements on an S = 1, quasi-2D honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet Na3Ni2BiO6. A large positive Curie-Weiss constant of 22.9 K is observed. The NMR spectra at low fields are consistent with a "zigzag" magnetic order, indicating a large easy-axis anisotropy. With field applied along the c* axis, the NMR spectra confirm the existence of a 1/3-magnetization plateau phase between 5.1 T and 7.1 T. The transition from the zigzag order to the 1/3-magnetization plateau phase is also found to be a first-order type. A monotonic decrease of the spin gap is revealed in the 1/3-magnetization plateau phase, which reaches zero at a quantum critical field Hc = 8.35 T before entering the fully polarized phase. These data suggest the existence of exchange frustration in the system along with strong ferromagnetic interactions, hosting the possibility for Kitaev physics. Besides, well below the ordered phase, the 1/T1 at high fields shows either a level off or an enhancement upon cooling below 3 K, which suggests the existence of low-energy fluctuations.

Self-supervised Monocular Depth Estimation on Water Scenes via Specular Reflection Prior

Monocular depth estimation from a single image is an ill-posed problem for computer vision due to insufficient reliable cues as the prior knowledge. Besides the inter-frame supervision, namely stereo and adjacent frames, extensive prior information is available in the same frame. Reflections from specular surfaces, informative intra-frame priors, enable us to reformulate the ill-posed depth estimation task as a multi-view synthesis. This paper proposes the first self-supervision for deep-learning depth estimation on water scenes via intra-frame priors, known as reflection supervision and geometrical constraints. In the first stage, a water segmentation network is performed to separate the reflection components from the entire image. Next, we construct a self-supervised framework to predict the target appearance from reflections, perceived as other perspectives. The photometric re-projection error, incorporating SmoothL1 and a novel photometric adaptive SSIM, is formulated to optimize pose and depth estimation by aligning the transformed virtual depths and source ones. As a supplement, the water surface is determined from real and virtual camera positions, which complement the depth of the water area. Furthermore, to alleviate these laborious ground truth annotations, we introduce a large-scale water reflection scene (WRS) dataset rendered from Unreal Engine 4. Extensive experiments on the WRS dataset prove the feasibility of the proposed method compared to state-of-the-art depth estimation techniques.

Rediscovery of Numerical Lüscher's Formula from the Neural Network

We present that by predicting the spectrum in discrete space from the phase shift in continuous space, the neural network can remarkably reproduce the numerical Lüscher's formula to a high precision. The model-independent property of the Lüscher's formula is naturally realized by the generalizability of the neural network. This exhibits the great potential of the neural network to extract model-independent relation between model-dependent quantities, and this data-driven approach could greatly facilitate the discovery of the physical principles underneath the intricate data.

Generalizable Whole Slide Image Classification with Fine-Grained Visual-Semantic Interaction

Whole Slide Image (WSI) classification is often formulated as a Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) problem. Recently, Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have demonstrated remarkable performance in WSI classification. However, existing methods leverage coarse-grained pathogenetic descriptions for visual representation supervision, which are insufficient to capture the complex visual appearance of pathogenetic images, hindering the generalizability of models on diverse downstream tasks. Additionally, processing high-resolution WSIs can be computationally expensive. In this paper, we propose a novel "Fine-grained Visual-Semantic Interaction" (FiVE) framework for WSI classification. It is designed to enhance the model's generalizability by leveraging the interaction between localized visual patterns and fine-grained pathological semantics. Specifically, with meticulously designed queries, we start by utilizing a large language model to extract fine-grained pathological descriptions from various non-standardized raw reports. The output descriptions are then reconstructed into fine-grained labels used for training. By introducing a Task-specific Fine-grained Semantics (TFS) module, we enable prompts to capture crucial visual information in WSIs, which enhances representation learning and augments generalization capabilities significantly. Furthermore, given that pathological visual patterns are redundantly distributed across tissue slices, we sample a subset of visual instances during training. Our method demonstrates robust generalizability and strong transferability, dominantly outperforming the counterparts on the TCGA Lung Cancer dataset with at least 9.19% higher accuracy in few-shot experiments. The code is available at: https://github.com/ls1rius/WSI_FiVE.

Chart2Vec: A Universal Embedding of Context-Aware Visualizations

The advances in AI-enabled techniques have accelerated the creation and automation of visualizations in the past decade. However, presenting visualizations in a descriptive and generative format remains a challenge. Moreover, current visualization embedding methods focus on standalone visualizations, neglecting the importance of contextual information for multi-view visualizations. To address this issue, we propose a new representation model, Chart2Vec, to learn a universal embedding of visualizations with context-aware information. Chart2Vec aims to support a wide range of downstream visualization tasks such as recommendation and storytelling. Our model considers both structural and semantic information of visualizations in declarative specifications. To enhance the context-aware capability, Chart2Vec employs multi-task learning on both supervised and unsupervised tasks concerning the cooccurrence of visualizations. We evaluate our method through an ablation study, a user study, and a quantitative comparison. The results verified the consistency of our embedding method with human cognition and showed its advantages over existing methods.
