A general fourth-order mesoscopic multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model and equivalent macroscopic finite-difference scheme for two-dimensional diffusion equations

In this work, we first develop a general mesoscopic multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann (MRT-LB) model for the two-dimensional diffusion equation with the constant diffusion coefficient and source term, where the D2Q5 (five discrete velocities in two-dimensional space) lattice structure is considered. Then we exactly derive the equivalent macroscopic finite-difference scheme of the MRT-LB model. Additionally, we also propose a proper MRT-LB model for the diffusion equation with a linear source term, and obtain an equivalent macroscopic six-level finite-difference scheme. After that, we conduct the accuracy and stability analysis of the finite-difference scheme and the mesoscopic MRT-LB model. It is found that at the diffusive scaling, both of them can achieve a fourth-order accuracy in space based on the Taylor expansion. The stability analysis also shows that they are both unconditionally stable. Finally, some numerical experiments are conducted, and the numerical results are also consistent with our theoretical analysis.

Deep learning-based quantum algorithms for solving nonlinear partial differential equations

Partial differential equations frequently appear in the natural sciences and related disciplines. Solving them is often challenging, particularly in high dimensions, due to the "curse of dimensionality". In this work, we explore the potential for enhancing a classical deep learning-based method for solving high-dimensional nonlinear partial differential equations with suitable quantum subroutines. First, with near-term noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers in mind, we construct architectures employing variational quantum circuits and classical neural networks in conjunction. While the hybrid architectures show equal or worse performance than their fully classical counterparts in simulations, they may still be of use in very high-dimensional cases or if the problem is of a quantum mechanical nature. Next, we identify the bottlenecks imposed by Monte Carlo sampling and the training of the neural networks. We find that quantum-accelerated Monte Carlo methods offer the potential to speed up the estimation of the loss function. In addition, we identify and analyse the trade-offs when using quantum-accelerated Monte Carlo methods to estimate the gradients with different methods, including a recently developed backpropagation-free forward gradient method. Finally, we discuss the usage of a suitable quantum algorithm for accelerating the training of feed-forward neural networks. Hence, this work provides different avenues with the potential for polynomial speedups for deep learning-based methods for nonlinear partial differential equations.

Lightweight network towards real-time image denoising on mobile devices

Deep convolutional neural networks have achieved great progress in image denoising tasks. However, their complicated architectures and heavy computational cost hinder their deployments on mobile devices. Some recent efforts in designing lightweight denoising networks focus on reducing either FLOPs (floating-point operations) or the number of parameters. However, these metrics are not directly correlated with the on-device latency. In this paper, we identify the real bottlenecks that affect the CNN-based models' run-time performance on mobile devices: memory access cost and NPU-incompatible operations, and build the model based on these. To further improve the denoising performance, the mobile-friendly attention module MFA and the model reparameterization module RepConv are proposed, which enjoy both low latency and excellent denoising performance. To this end, we propose a mobile-friendly denoising network, namely MFDNet. The experiments show that MFDNet achieves state-of-the-art performance on real-world denoising benchmarks SIDD and DND under real-time latency on mobile devices. The code and pre-trained models will be released.

$η$-glueball mixing from $N_f=2$ lattice QCD

We perform the first lattice study on the mixing of the isoscalar pseudoscalar meson $η$ and the pseudoscalar glueball $G$ in the $N_f=2$ QCD at the pion mass $m_π\approx 350$ MeV. The $η$ mass is determined to be $m_η=714(6)(16)$ MeV. Through the Witten-Veneziano relation, this value can be matched to a mass value of $\sim 981$ MeV for the $\mathrm{SU(3)}$ counterpart of $η$. Based on a large gauge ensemble, the $η-G$ mixing energy and the mixing angle are determined to be $|x|=107(15)(2)$ MeV and $|θ|=3.46(46)^\circ$ from the $η-G$ correlators that are calculated using the distillation method. We conclude that the $η-G$ mixing is tiny and the topology induced interaction contributes most of $η$ mass owing to the QCD $\mathrm{U_A(1)}$ anomaly.

Frequency-aware Dimension Selection for Static Word Embedding by Mixed Product Distance

Static word embedding is still useful, particularly for context-unavailable tasks, because in the case of no context available, pre-trained language models often perform worse than static word embeddings. Although dimension is a key factor determining the quality of static word embeddings, automatic dimension selection is rarely discussed. In this paper, we investigate the impact of word frequency on the dimension selection, and empirically find that word frequency is so vital that it needs to be taken into account during dimension selection. Based on such an empirical finding, this paper proposes a dimension selection method that uses a metric (Mixed Product Distance, MPD) to select a proper dimension for word embedding algorithms without training any word embedding. Through applying a post-processing function to oracle matrices, the MPD-based method can de-emphasize the impact of word frequency. Experiments on both context-unavailable and context-available tasks demonstrate the better efficiency-performance trade-off of our MPD-based dimension selection method over baselines.

FusionDepth: Complement Self-Supervised Monocular Depth Estimation with Cost Volume

Multi-view stereo depth estimation based on cost volume usually works better than self-supervised monocular depth estimation except for moving objects and low-textured surfaces. So in this paper, we propose a multi-frame depth estimation framework which monocular depth can be refined continuously by multi-frame sequential constraints, leveraging a Bayesian fusion layer within several iterations. Both monocular and multi-view networks can be trained with no depth supervision. Our method also enhances the interpretability when combining monocular estimation with multi-view cost volume. Detailed experiments show that our method surpasses state-of-the-art unsupervised methods utilizing single or multiple frames at test time on KITTI benchmark.

MD-VQA: Multi-Dimensional Quality Assessment for UGC Live Videos

User-generated content (UGC) live videos are often bothered by various distortions during capture procedures and thus exhibit diverse visual qualities. Such source videos are further compressed and transcoded by media server providers before being distributed to end-users. Because of the flourishing of UGC live videos, effective video quality assessment (VQA) tools are needed to monitor and perceptually optimize live streaming videos in the distributing process. In this paper, we address \textbf{UGC Live VQA} problems by constructing a first-of-a-kind subjective UGC Live VQA database and developing an effective evaluation tool. Concretely, 418 source UGC videos are collected in real live streaming scenarios and 3,762 compressed ones at different bit rates are generated for the subsequent subjective VQA experiments. Based on the built database, we develop a \underline{M}ulti-\underline{D}imensional \underline{VQA} (\textbf{MD-VQA}) evaluator to measure the visual quality of UGC live videos from semantic, distortion, and motion aspects respectively. Extensive experimental results show that MD-VQA achieves state-of-the-art performance on both our UGC Live VQA database and existing compressed UGC VQA databases.

EWT: Efficient Wavelet-Transformer for Single Image Denoising

Transformer-based image denoising methods have achieved encouraging results in the past year. However, it must uses linear operations to model long-range dependencies, which greatly increases model inference time and consumes GPU storage space. Compared with convolutional neural network-based methods, current Transformer-based image denoising methods cannot achieve a balance between performance improvement and resource consumption. In this paper, we propose an Efficient Wavelet Transformer (EWT) for image denoising. Specifically, we use Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Inverse Wavelet Transform (IWT) for downsampling and upsampling, respectively. This method can fully preserve the image features while reducing the image resolution, thereby greatly reducing the device resource consumption of the Transformer model. Furthermore, we propose a novel Dual-stream Feature Extraction Block (DFEB) to extract image features at different levels, which can further reduce model inference time and GPU memory usage. Experiments show that our method speeds up the original Transformer by more than 80%, reduces GPU memory usage by more than 60%, and achieves excellent denoising results. All code will be public.

$1^{-+}$ Hybrid in $J/ψ$ Radiative Decays from Lattice QCD

We present the first theoretical prediction of the production rate of $1^{-+}$ light hybrid meson $η_1$ in $J/ψ$ radiative decays. In the $N_f=2$ lattice QCD formalism with the pion mass $m_π\approx 350$ MeV, the related electromagnetic multipole form factors are extracted from the three-point functions that involve necessarily quark annihilation diagrams, which are calculated through the distillation method. The partial width of $J/ψ\to γη_1$ is determined to be $2.29(77)~\mathrm{eV}$ at the $η_1$ mass $m_{η_1}=2.23(4)$ GeV. If $η_1$ corresponds to the recently observed $η_1(1855)$ in the process $J/ψ\to γη_1(1855)\to γηη'$ by BESIII, then the branching fraction $\mathrm{Br}(J/ψ\to γη_1(1855))$ is estimated to be $6.2(2.2)\times 10^{-5}$, which implies $\mathrm{Br}(η_1(1855)\to ηη')\sim 4.3\%$.

Adaptive Assignment for Geometry Aware Local Feature Matching

The detector-free feature matching approaches are currently attracting great attention thanks to their excellent performance. However, these methods still struggle at large-scale and viewpoint variations, due to the geometric inconsistency resulting from the application of the mutual nearest neighbour criterion (\ie, one-to-one assignment) in patch-level matching.Accordingly, we introduce AdaMatcher, which first accomplishes the feature correlation and co-visible area estimation through an elaborate feature interaction module, then performs adaptive assignment on patch-level matching while estimating the scales between images, and finally refines the co-visible matches through scale alignment and sub-pixel regression module.Extensive experiments show that AdaMatcher outperforms solid baselines and achieves state-of-the-art results on many downstream tasks. Additionally, the adaptive assignment and sub-pixel refinement module can be used as a refinement network for other matching methods, such as SuperGlue, to boost their performance further. The code will be publicly available at https://github.com/AbyssGaze/AdaMatcher.

Prediction of novel final phases in aged uranium-niobium alloys

Ordered intermetallics are long believed to be the final products of the aging of U-Nb solid solutions at low temperatures, a crucial property for the practical applications of this alloy in engineering and industry. However, such conjectured ordered compounds have not been experimentally or theoretically established. Herein, numerical evidence for ordered intermetallic U-Nb compounds is presented using thorough first-principles structure predictions up to 500 GPa. Two stable U2Nb compounds and one metastable U2Nb and one metastable U3Nb were discovered. A unique hybridized transition driven by pressure was observed in U2Nb, which is a superposition of one first-order transition and another second-order transition, leading to striking features near the transition pressure of 21.6 GPa. The decomposition limit of these compounds at high temperature was also investigated. The strong stability of U2Nb in the region of low pressure and high temperature was revealed. This discovery of ordered U2Nb and its strong stability over a wide pressure range completely changed the phase diagram of U-Nb alloys and shed new light on the dynamic response and aging mechanism of U-Nb alloys.

Ambient Intelligence for Next-Generation AR

Next-generation augmented reality (AR) promises a high degree of context-awareness - a detailed knowledge of the environmental, user, social and system conditions in which an AR experience takes place. This will facilitate both the closer integration of the real and virtual worlds, and the provision of context-specific content or adaptations. However, environmental awareness in particular is challenging to achieve using AR devices alone; not only are these mobile devices' view of an environment spatially and temporally limited, but the data obtained by onboard sensors is frequently inaccurate and incomplete. This, combined with the fact that many aspects of core AR functionality and user experiences are impacted by properties of the real environment, motivates the use of ambient IoT devices, wireless sensors and actuators placed in the surrounding environment, for the measurement and optimization of environment properties. In this book chapter we categorize and examine the wide variety of ways in which these IoT sensors and actuators can support or enhance AR experiences, including quantitative insights and proof-of-concept systems that will inform the development of future solutions. We outline the challenges and opportunities associated with several important research directions which must be addressed to realize the full potential of next-generation AR.

Radiative Decay Width of $J/ψ\to γη_{(2)}$ from $N_f=2$ Lattice QCD

The large radiative production rate for pseudoscalar mesons in the $J/ψ$ radiative decay remains elusive. We present the first lattice QCD calculation of partial decay width of $J/ψ$ radiatively decaying into $η_{(2)}$, the $\mathrm{SU(2)}$ flavor singlet pseudoscalar meson, which confirms QCD $\mathrm{U_A(1)}$ anomaly enhancement to the coupling of gluons with flavor singlet pseudoscalar mesons. The lattice simulation is carried out using $N_f=2$ lattice QCD gauge configurations at the pion mass $m_π \approx 350$ MeV. In particular, the distillation method has been utilized to calculate light quark loops. The results are reported here with the mass $m_{η_{(2)}}= 718(8)$ MeV and the decay width $Γ(J/ψ\toγη_{(2)})=0.385(45)$ keV. By assuming the dominance of $\mathrm{U_A(1)}$ anomaly and flavor singlet-octet mixing angle $θ=-24.5^\circ$, the production rates for the physical $η$ and $η'$ in $J/ψ$ radiative decay are predicted to be $1.15(14)\times 10^{-3}$ and $4.49(53)\times 10^{-3}$, respectively, which agree well with the experimental measurement data. Our study manifests the potential of lattice QCD studies on the light hadron production in $J/ψ$ radiative decays.

Progressive Training of A Two-Stage Framework for Video Restoration

As a widely studied task, video restoration aims to enhance the quality of the videos with multiple potential degradations, such as noises, blurs and compression artifacts. Among video restorations, compressed video quality enhancement and video super-resolution are two of the main tacks with significant values in practical scenarios. Recently, recurrent neural networks and transformers attract increasing research interests in this field, due to their impressive capability in sequence-to-sequence modeling. However, the training of these models is not only costly but also relatively hard to converge, with gradient exploding and vanishing problems. To cope with these problems, we proposed a two-stage framework including a multi-frame recurrent network and a single-frame transformer. Besides, multiple training strategies, such as transfer learning and progressive training, are developed to shorten the training time and improve the model performance. Benefiting from the above technical contributions, our solution wins two champions and a runner-up in the NTIRE 2022 super-resolution and quality enhancement of compressed video challenges. TextShield: Beyond Successfully Detecting Adversarial Sentences in Text Classification

Adversarial attack serves as a major challenge for neural network models in NLP, which precludes the model's deployment in safety-critical applications. A recent line of work, detection-based defense, aims to distinguish adversarial sentences from benign ones. However, {the core limitation of previous detection methods is being incapable of giving correct predictions on adversarial sentences unlike defense methods from other paradigms.} To solve this issue, this paper proposes TextShield: (1) we discover a link between text attack and saliency information, and then we propose a saliency-based detector, which can effectively detect whether an input sentence is adversarial or not. (2) We design a saliency-based corrector, which converts the detected adversary sentences to benign ones. By combining the saliency-based detector and corrector, TextShield extends the detection-only paradigm to a detection-correction paradigm, thus filling the gap in the existing detection-based defense. Comprehensive experiments show that (a) TextShield consistently achieves higher or comparable performance than state-of-the-art defense methods across various attacks on different benchmarks. (b) our saliency-based detector outperforms existing detectors for detecting adversarial sentences.
