Article's Scientific Prestige: measuring the impact of individual articles in the Web of Science

We performed a citation analysis on the Web of Science publications consisting of more than 63 million articles and 1.45 billion citations on 254 subjects from 1981 to 2020. We proposed the Article's Scientific Prestige (ASP) metric and compared this metric to number of citations (#Cit) and journal grade in measuring the scientific impact of individual articles in the large-scale hierarchical and multi-disciplined citation network. In contrast to #Cit, ASP, that is computed based on the eigenvector centrality, considers both direct and indirect citations, and provides steady-state evaluation cross different disciplines. We found that ASP and #Cit are not aligned for most articles, with a growing mismatch amongst the less cited articles. While both metrics are reliable for evaluating the prestige of articles such as Nobel Prize winning articles, ASP tends to provide more persuasive rankings than #Cit when the articles are not highly cited. The journal grade, that is eventually determined by a few highly cited articles, is unable to properly reflect the scientific impact of individual articles. The number of references and coauthors are less relevant to scientific impact, but subjects do make a difference.

VR Viewport Pose Model for Quantifying and Exploiting Frame Correlations

The importance of the dynamics of the viewport pose, i.e., the location and the orientation of users' points of view, for virtual reality (VR) experiences calls for the development of VR viewport pose models. In this paper, informed by our experimental measurements of viewport trajectories across 3 different types of VR interfaces, we first develop a statistical model of viewport poses in VR environments. Based on the developed model, we examine the correlations between pixels in VR frames that correspond to different viewport poses, and obtain an analytical expression for the visibility similarity (ViS) of the pixels across different VR frames. We then propose a lightweight ViS-based ALG-ViS algorithm that adaptively splits VR frames into the background and the foreground, reusing the background across different frames. Our implementation of ALG-ViS in two Oculus Quest 2 rendering systems demonstrates ALG-ViS running in real time, supporting the full VR frame rate, and outperforming baselines on measures of frame quality and bandwidth consumption.

p-orbital disclination states in non-Euclidean geometries

Disclinations are ubiquitous lattice defects existing in almost all crystalline materials. In two-dimensional nanomaterials, disclinations lead to the warping and deformation of the hosting material, yielding non-Euclidean geometries. However, such geometries have never been investigated experimentally in the context of topological phenomena. Here, by creating the physical realization of disclinations in conical and saddle-shaped acoustic systems, we demonstrate that disclinations can lead to topologically protected bound modes in non-Euclidean surfaces. In the designed honeycomb sonic crystal for p-orbital acoustic waves, non-Euclidean geometry interplay with the p-orbital physics and the band topology, showing intriguing emergent features as confirmed by consistent experiments and simulations. Our study opens a pathway towards topological phenomena in non-Euclidean geometries that may inspire future studies on, e.g., electrons and phonons in nanomaterials with curved surfaces.

Semiquantum Private Comparison of Size Relationship Based on d-level Single-Particle States

In this paper, we propose a novel semiquantum private comparison (SQPC) protocol of size relationship based on d-level single-particle states. The designed protocol can compare the size relationship of different privacy messages from two classical users with the help of a semi-honest third party (TP), who is permitted to misbehave on her own but cannot be in collusion with anyone else. The correctness analysis shows that this protocol can gain correct comparison results. The security analysis turns out that this protocol can resist famous outside attacks and participant attacks. Moreover, this protocol can guarantee that TP does not know the accurate comparison results. Compared with the only existing SQPC protocol of size relationship (Quantum Inf. Process. 20:124 (2021)), this protocol takes advantage over it on the aspects of initial quantum resource, TP's measurement operations and TP's knowledge about the comparison results.

Refining Language Models with Compositional Explanations

Pre-trained language models have been successful on text classification tasks, but are prone to learning spurious correlations from biased datasets, and are thus vulnerable when making inferences in a new domain. Prior work reveals such spurious patterns via post-hoc explanation algorithms which compute the importance of input features. Further, the model is regularized to align the importance scores with human knowledge, so that the unintended model behaviors are eliminated. However, such a regularization technique lacks flexibility and coverage, since only importance scores towards a pre-defined list of features are adjusted, while more complex human knowledge such as feature interaction and pattern generalization can hardly be incorporated. In this work, we propose to refine a learned language model for a target domain by collecting human-provided compositional explanations regarding observed biases. By parsing these explanations into executable logic rules, the human-specified refinement advice from a small set of explanations can be generalized to more training examples. We additionally introduce a regularization term allowing adjustments for both importance and interaction of features to better rectify model behavior. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach on two text classification tasks by showing improved performance in target domain as well as improved model fairness after refinement.

Glueballs at Physical Pion Mass

We study glueballs on two $N_f=2+1$ RBC/UKQCD gauge ensembles with physical quark masses at two lattice spacings. The statistical uncertainties of the glueball correlation functions are considerably reduced through the cluster decomposition error reduction (CDER) method. The Bethe-Salpeter wave functions are obtained for the scalar, tensor and pseudoscalar glueballs by using spatially extended glueball operators defined through the gauge potential $A_μ(x)$ in the Coulomb gauge. These wave functions show similar features of non-relativistic two-gluon systems, and they are used to optimize the signals of the related correlation functions at the early time regions. Consequently, the ground state masses can be extracted precisely. To the extent that the excited state contamination is not important, our calculation gives glueball masses at the physical pion mass for the first time.

MANGO: A Mask Attention Guided One-Stage Scene Text Spotter

Recently end-to-end scene text spotting has become a popular research topic due to its advantages of global optimization and high maintainability in real applications. Most methods attempt to develop various region of interest (RoI) operations to concatenate the detection part and the sequence recognition part into a two-stage text spotting framework. However, in such framework, the recognition part is highly sensitive to the detected results (e.g.), the compactness of text contours). To address this problem, in this paper, we propose a novel Mask AttentioN Guided One-stage text spotting framework named MANGO, in which character sequences can be directly recognized without RoI operation. Concretely, a position-aware mask attention module is developed to generate attention weights on each text instance and its characters. It allows different text instances in an image to be allocated on different feature map channels which are further grouped as a batch of instance features. Finally, a lightweight sequence decoder is applied to generate the character sequences. It is worth noting that MANGO inherently adapts to arbitrary-shaped text spotting and can be trained end-to-end with only coarse position information (e.g.), rectangular bounding box) and text annotations. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves competitive and even new state-of-the-art performance on both regular and irregular text spotting benchmarks, i.e., ICDAR 2013, ICDAR 2015, Total-Text, and SCUT-CTW1500.

Semi-supervised Domain Adaptation for Semantic Segmentation

Deep learning approaches for semantic segmentation rely primarily on supervised learning approaches and require substantial efforts in producing pixel-level annotations. Further, such approaches may perform poorly when applied to unseen image domains. To cope with these limitations, both unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) with full source supervision but without target supervision and semi-supervised learning (SSL) with partial supervision have been proposed. While such methods are effective at aligning different feature distributions, there is still a need to efficiently exploit unlabeled data to address the performance gap with respect to fully-supervised methods. In this paper we address semi-supervised domain adaptation (SSDA) for semantic segmentation, where a large amount of labeled source data as well as a small amount of labeled target data are available. We propose a novel and effective two-step semi-supervised dual-domain adaptation (SSDDA) approach to address both cross- and intra-domain gaps in semantic segmentation. The proposed framework is comprised of two mixing modules. First, we conduct a cross-domain adaptation via an image-level mixing strategy, which learns to align the distribution shift of features between the source data and target data. Second, intra-domain adaptation is achieved using a separate student-teacher network which is built to generate category-level data augmentation by mixing unlabeled target data in a way that respects predicted object boundaries. We demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods on two common synthetic-to-real semantic segmentation benchmarks. An extensive ablation study is provided to further validate the effectiveness of our approach.

Multi-institutional Validation of Two-Streamed Deep Learning Method for Automated Delineation of Esophageal Gross Tumor Volume using planning-CT and FDG-PETCT

Background: The current clinical workflow for esophageal gross tumor volume (GTV) contouring relies on manual delineation of high labor-costs and interuser variability. Purpose: To validate the clinical applicability of a deep learning (DL) multi-modality esophageal GTV contouring model, developed at 1 institution whereas tested at multiple ones. Methods and Materials: We collected 606 esophageal cancer patients from four institutions. 252 institution-1 patients had a treatment planning-CT (pCT) and a pair of diagnostic FDG-PETCT; 354 patients from other 3 institutions had only pCT. A two-streamed DL model for GTV segmentation was developed using pCT and PETCT scans of a 148 patient institution-1 subset. This built model had the flexibility of segmenting GTVs via only pCT or pCT+PETCT combined. For independent evaluation, the rest 104 institution-1 patients behaved as unseen internal testing, and 354 institutions 2-4 patients were used for external testing. We evaluated manual revision degrees by human experts to assess the contour-editing effort. The performance of the deep model was compared against 4 radiation oncologists in a multiuser study with 20 random external patients. Contouring accuracy and time were recorded for the pre-and post-DL assisted delineation process. Results: Our model achieved high segmentation accuracy in internal testing (mean Dice score: 0.81 using pCT and 0.83 using pCT+PET) and generalized well to external evaluation (mean DSC: 0.80). Expert assessment showed that the predicted contours of 88% patients need only minor or no revision. In multi-user evaluation, with the assistance of a deep model, inter-observer variation and required contouring time were reduced by 37.6% and 48.0%, respectively. Conclusions: Deep learning predicted GTV contours were in close agreement with the ground truth and could be adopted clinically with mostly minor or no changes.

Multi-Modal Sarcasm Detection Based on Contrastive Attention Mechanism

In the past decade, sarcasm detection has been intensively conducted in a textual scenario. With the popularization of video communication, the analysis in multi-modal scenarios has received much attention in recent years. Therefore, multi-modal sarcasm detection, which aims at detecting sarcasm in video conversations, becomes increasingly hot in both the natural language processing community and the multi-modal analysis community. In this paper, considering that sarcasm is often conveyed through incongruity between modalities (e.g., text expressing a compliment while acoustic tone indicating a grumble), we construct a Contras-tive-Attention-based Sarcasm Detection (ConAttSD) model, which uses an inter-modality contrastive attention mechanism to extract several contrastive features for an utterance. A contrastive feature represents the incongruity of information between two modalities. Our experiments on MUStARD, a benchmark multi-modal sarcasm dataset, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed ConAttSD model.

Temporal-Coded Deep Spiking Neural Network with Easy Training and Robust Performance

Spiking neural network (SNN) is interesting both theoretically and practically because of its strong bio-inspiration nature and potentially outstanding energy efficiency. Unfortunately, its development has fallen far behind the conventional deep neural network (DNN), mainly because of difficult training and lack of widely accepted hardware experiment platforms. In this paper, we show that a deep temporal-coded SNN can be trained easily and directly over the benchmark datasets CIFAR10 and ImageNet, with testing accuracy within 1% of the DNN of equivalent size and architecture. Training becomes similar to DNN thanks to the closed-form solution to the spiking waveform dynamics. Considering that SNNs should be implemented in practical neuromorphic hardwares, we train the deep SNN with weights quantized to 8, 4, 2 bits and with weights perturbed by random noise to demonstrate its robustness in practical applications. In addition, we develop a phase-domain signal processing circuit schematic to implement our spiking neuron with 90% gain of energy efficiency over existing work. This paper demonstrates that the temporal-coded deep SNN is feasible for applications with high performance and high energy efficient.

DuTrust: A Sentiment Analysis Dataset for Trustworthiness Evaluation

While deep learning models have greatly improved the performance of most artificial intelligence tasks, they are often criticized to be untrustworthy due to the black-box problem. Consequently, many works have been proposed to study the trustworthiness of deep learning. However, as most open datasets are designed for evaluating the accuracy of model outputs, there is still a lack of appropriate datasets for evaluating the inner workings of neural networks. The lack of datasets obviously hinders the development of trustworthiness research. Therefore, in order to systematically evaluate the factors for building trustworthy systems, we propose a novel and well-annotated sentiment analysis dataset to evaluate robustness and interpretability. To evaluate these factors, our dataset contains diverse annotations about the challenging distribution of instances, manual adversarial instances and sentiment explanations. Several evaluation metrics are further proposed for interpretability and robustness. Based on the dataset and metrics, we conduct comprehensive comparisons for the trustworthiness of three typical models, and also study the relations between accuracy, robustness and interpretability. We release this trustworthiness evaluation dataset at \url{https://github/xyz} and hope our work can facilitate the progress on building more trustworthy systems for real-world applications.

Color halo scenario of charmonium-like hybrids

The internal structures of $J^{PC}=1^{--}, (0,1,2)^{-+}$ charmonium-like hybrids are investigated under lattice QCD in the quenched approximation. We define the Bethe-Salpeter wave function $Φ_n(r)$ in the Coulomb gauge as the matrix element of a spatially extended hybrid-like operator $\bar{c}{c}g$ between the vacuum and $n$-th state for each $J^{PC}$ with $r$ being the spatial separation between a localized $\bar{c}c$ component and the chromomagnetic strength tensor. These wave functions exhibit some similarities for states with the aforementioned different quantum numbers, and their $r$-behaviors (no node for the ground states and one node for the first excited states) imply that $r$ can be a meaningful dynamical variable for these states. Additionally, the mass splittings of the ground states and first excited states of charmonium-like hybrids in these channels are obtained for the first time to be approximately 1.2-1.4 GeV. These results do not support the flux-tube description of heavy-quarkonium-like hybrids in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. In contrast, a charmonium-like hybrid can be viewed as a "color halo" charmonium for which a relatively localized color octet $\bar{c}c$ is surrounded by gluonic degrees of freedom, which can readily decay into a charmonium state along with one or more light hadrons. The color halo picture is compatible with the decay properties of $Y(4260)$ and suggests LHCb and BelleII to search for $(0,1,2)^{-+}$ charmonium-like hybrids in $χ_{c0,1,2}η$ and $J/ψω(ϕ)$ final states.

Multi-granularity for knowledge distillation

Considering the fact that students have different abilities to understand the knowledge imparted by teachers, a multi-granularity distillation mechanism is proposed for transferring more understandable knowledge for student networks. A multi-granularity self-analyzing module of the teacher network is designed, which enables the student network to learn knowledge from different teaching patterns. Furthermore, a stable excitation scheme is proposed for robust supervision for the student training. The proposed distillation mechanism can be embedded into different distillation frameworks, which are taken as baselines. Experiments show the mechanism improves the accuracy by 0.58% on average and by 1.08% in the best over the baselines, which makes its performance superior to the state-of-the-arts. It is also exploited that the student's ability of fine-tuning and robustness to noisy inputs can be improved via the proposed mechanism. The code is available at https://github.com/shaoeric/multi-granularity-distillation.

Ideal type-II Weyl points in twisted one-dimensional dielectric photonic crystals

Weyl points are the degenerate points in three-dimensional momentum space with nontrivial topological phase, which are usually realized in classical system with structure and symmetry designs. Here we proposed a one-dimensional layer-stacked photonic crystal using anisotropic materials to realize ideal type-II Weyl points without structure designs. The topological transition from two Dirac points to four Weyl points can be clearly observed by tuning the twist angle between layers. Besides, on the interface between the photonic type-II Weyl material and air, gappless surface states have also been demonstrated in an incomplete bulk bandgap. By breaking parameter symmetry, these ideal type-II Weyl points at the same frequency would transform into the non-ideal ones, and exhibit topological surface states with single group velocity. Our work may provide a new idea for the realization of photonic Weyl points or other semimetal phases by utilizing naturally anisotropic materials.

Two-stage short-term wind power forecasting algorithm using different feature-learning models

Two-stage ensemble-based forecasting methods have been studied extensively in the wind power forecasting field. However, deep learning-based wind power forecasting studies have not investigated two aspects. In the first stage, different learning structures considering multiple inputs and multiple outputs have not been discussed. In the second stage, the model extrapolation issue has not been investigated. Therefore, we develop four deep neural networks for the first stage to learn data features considering the input-and-output structure. We then explore the model extrapolation issue in the second stage using different modeling methods. Considering the overfitting issue, we propose a new moving window-based algorithm using a validation set in the first stage to update the training data in both stages with two different moving window processes.Experiments were conducted at three wind farms, and the results demonstrate that the model with single input multiple output structure obtains better forecasting accuracy compared to existing models. In addition, the ridge regression method results in a better ensemble model that can further improve forecasting accuracy compared to existing machine learning methods. Finally, the proposed two-stage forecasting algorithm can generate more accurate and stable results than existing algorithms.

DeepQTMT: A Deep Learning Approach for Fast QTMT-based CU Partition of Intra-mode VVC

Versatile Video Coding (VVC), as the latest standard, significantly improves the coding efficiency over its ancestor standard High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), but at the expense of sharply increased complexity. In VVC, the quad-tree plus multi-type tree (QTMT) structure of coding unit (CU) partition accounts for over 97% of the encoding time, due to the brute-force search for recursive rate-distortion (RD) optimization. Instead of the brute-force QTMT search, this paper proposes a deep learning approach to predict the QTMT-based CU partition, for drastically accelerating the encoding process of intra-mode VVC. First, we establish a large-scale database containing sufficient CU partition patterns with diverse video content, which can facilitate the data-driven VVC complexity reduction. Next, we propose a multi-stage exit CNN (MSE-CNN) model with an early-exit mechanism to determine the CU partition, in accord with the flexible QTMT structure at multiple stages. Then, we design an adaptive loss function for training the MSE-CNN model, synthesizing both the uncertain number of split modes and the target on minimized RD cost. Finally, a multi-threshold decision scheme is developed, achieving desirable trade-off between complexity and RD performance. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach can reduce the encoding time of VVC by 44.65%-66.88% with the negligible Bjøntegaard delta bit-rate (BD-BR) of 1.322%-3.188%, which significantly outperforms other state-of-the-art approaches.
