M2Det: A Single-Shot Object Detector based on Multi-Level Feature Pyramid Network

Feature pyramids are widely exploited by both the state-of-the-art one-stage object detectors (e.g., DSSD, RetinaNet, RefineDet) and the two-stage object detectors (e.g., Mask R-CNN, DetNet) to alleviate the problem arising from scale variation across object instances. Although these object detectors with feature pyramids achieve encouraging results, they have some limitations due to that they only simply construct the feature pyramid according to the inherent multi-scale, pyramidal architecture of the backbones which are actually designed for object classification task. Newly, in this work, we present a method called Multi-Level Feature Pyramid Network (MLFPN) to construct more effective feature pyramids for detecting objects of different scales. First, we fuse multi-level features (i.e. multiple layers) extracted by backbone as the base feature. Second, we feed the base feature into a block of alternating joint Thinned U-shape Modules and Feature Fusion Modules and exploit the decoder layers of each u-shape module as the features for detecting objects. Finally, we gather up the decoder layers with equivalent scales (sizes) to develop a feature pyramid for object detection, in which every feature map consists of the layers (features) from multiple levels. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed MLFPN, we design and train a powerful end-to-end one-stage object detector we call M2Det by integrating it into the architecture of SSD, which gets better detection performance than state-of-the-art one-stage detectors. Specifically, on MS-COCO benchmark, M2Det achieves AP of 41.0 at speed of 11.8 FPS with single-scale inference strategy and AP of 44.2 with multi-scale inference strategy, which is the new state-of-the-art results among one-stage detectors. The code will be made available on \url{https://github.com/qijiezhao/M2Det.

Bifurcation values and monodromy of mixed polynomials

We study the bifurcation values of real polynomial maps $f: \bR^{2n} \to \bR^2$ which reflect the lack of asymptotic regularity at infinity. We formulate real counterparts of some structure results which have been previously proved in case of complex polynomials by Kushnirenko, Némethi and Zaharia and other authors, emphasizing the typical real phenomena that occur.

Outcome-wide longitudinal designs for causal inference: a new template for empirical studies

In this paper we propose a new template for empirical studies intended to assess causal effects: the outcome-wide longitudinal design. The approach is an extension of what is often done to assess the causal effects of a treatment or exposure using confounding control, but now, over numerous outcomes. We discuss the temporal and confounding control principles for such outcome-wide studies, metrics to evaluate robustness or sensitivity to potential unmeasured confounding for each outcome, and approaches to handle multiple testing. We argue that the outcome-wide longitudinal design has numerous advantages over more traditional studies of single exposure-outcome relationships including results that are less subject to investigator bias, greater potential to report null effects, greater capacity to compare effect sizes, a tremendous gain in the efficiency for the research community, a greater policy relevance, and a more rapid advancement of knowledge. We discuss both the practical and theoretical justification for the outcome-wide longitudinal design and also the pragmatic details of its implementation.

MES-P: an Emotional Tonal Speech Dataset in Mandarin Chinese with Distal and Proximal Labels

Emotion shapes all aspects of our interpersonal and intellectual experiences. Its automatic analysis has there-fore many applications, e.g., human-machine interface. In this paper, we propose an emotional tonal speech dataset, namely Mandarin Chinese Emotional Speech Dataset - Portrayed (MES-P), with both distal and proximal labels. In contrast with state of the art emotional speech datasets which are only focused on perceived emotions, the proposed MES-P dataset includes not only perceived emotions with their proximal labels but also intended emotions with distal labels, thereby making it possible to study human emotional intelligence, i.e. people emotion expression ability and their skill of understanding emotions, thus explicitly accounting for perception differences between intended and perceived emotions in speech signals and enabling studies of emotional misunderstandings which often occur in real life. Furthermore, the proposed MES-P dataset also captures a main feature of tonal languages, i.e., tonal variations, and provides recorded emotional speech samples whose tonal variations match the tonal distribution in real life Mandarin Chinese. Besides, the proposed MES-P dataset features emotion intensity variations as well, and includes both moderate and intense versions of recordings for joy, anger, and sadness in addition to neutral speech. Ratings of the collected speech samples are made in valence-arousal space through continuous coordinate locations, resulting in an emotional distribution pattern in 2D VA space. The consistency between the speakers' emotional intentions and the listeners' perceptions is also studied using Cohen's Kappa coefficients. Finally, we also carry out extensive experiments using a baseline on MES-P for automatic emotion recognition and compare the results with human emotion intelligence.

Fundamentals on Base Stations in Cellular Networks: From the Perspective of Algebraic Topology

In recent decades, the deployments of cellular networks have been going through an unprecedented expansion. In this regard, it is beneficial to acquire profound knowledge of cellular networks from the view of topology so that prominent network performances can be achieved by means of appropriate placements of base stations (BSs). In our researches, practical location data of BSs in eight representative cities are processed with classical algebraic geometric instruments, including $ α$-Shapes, Betti numbers, and Euler characteristics. At first, the fractal nature is revealed in the BS topology from both perspectives of the Betti numbers and the Hurst coefficients. Furthermore, log-normal distribution is affirmed to provide the optimal fitness to the Euler characteristics of real BS deployments.

Glueball spectrum from $N_f=2$ lattice QCD study on anisotropic lattices

The lowest-lying glueballs are investigated in lattice QCD using $N_f=2$ clover Wilson fermion on anisotropic lattices. We simulate at two different and relatively heavy quark masses, corresponding to physical pion mass of $m_π\sim 938$ MeV and $650$ MeV. The quark mass dependence of the glueball masses have not been investigated in the present study. Only the gluonic operators built from Wilson loops are utilized in calculating the corresponding correlation functions. In the tensor channel, we obtain the ground state mass to be 2.363(39) GeV and 2.384(67) GeV at $m_π\sim 938$ MeV and $650$ MeV, respectively. In the pseudoscalar channel, when using the gluonic operator whose continuum limit has the form of $ε_{ijk}TrB_iD_jB_k$, we obtain the ground state mass to be 2.573(55) GeV and 2.585(65) GeV at the two pion masses. These results are compatible with the corresponding results in the quenched approximation. In contrast, if we use the topological charge density as field operators for the pseudoscalar, the masses of the lowest state are much lighter (around 1GeV) and compatible with the expected masses of the flavor singlet $q\bar{q}$ meson. This indicates that the operator $ε_{ijk}TrB_iD_jB_k$ and the topological charge density couple rather differently to the glueball states and $q\bar{q}$ mesons. The observation of the light flavor singlet pseudoscalar meson can be viewed as the manifestation of effects of dynamical quarks. In the scalar channel, the ground state masses extracted from the correlation functions of gluonic operators are determined to be around 1.4-1.5 GeV, which is close to the ground state masses from the correlation functions of the quark bilinear operators. In all cases, the mixing between glueballs and conventional mesons remains to be further clarified in the future.

Proton Mass Decomposition from the QCD Energy Momentum Tensor

We report results on the proton mass decomposition and also on related quark and glue momentum fractions. The results are based on overlap valence fermions on four ensembles of $N_f = 2+1$ DWF configurations with three lattice spacings and three volumes, and several pion masses including the physical pion mass. With fully non-perturbative renormalization (and universal normalization on both quark and gluon), we find that the quark energy and glue field energy contribute 33(4)(4)\% and 37(5)(4)\% respectively in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme at $μ= 2$ GeV. A quarter of the trace anomaly gives a 23(1)(1)\% contribution to the proton mass based on the sum rule, given 9(2)(1)\% contribution from the $u, d,$ and $s$ quark scalar condensates. The $u,d,s$ and glue momentum fractions in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme are in good agreement with global analyses at $μ= 2$ GeV.

Contribution of Glottal Waveform in Speech Emotion: A Comparative Pairwise Investigation

In this work, we investigated the contribution of the glottal waveform in human vocal emotion expressing. Seven emotional states including moderate and intense versions of three emotional families as anger, joy, and sadness, plus a neutral state are considered, with speech samples in Mandarin Chinese. The glottal waveform extracted from speech samples of different emotion states are first analyzed in both time domain and frequency domain to discover their differences. Comparative emotion classifications are then taken out based on features extracted from original whole speech signal and only glottal wave signal. In experiments of generation of a performance-driven hierarchical classifier architecture, and pairwise classification on individual emotional states, the low difference between accuracies obtained from speech signal and glottal signal proved that a majority of emotional cues in speech could be conveyed through glottal waveform. The best distinguishable emotional pair by glottal waveform is intense anger against moderate sadness, with the accuracy of 92.45%. It is also concluded in this work that glottal waveform represent better valence cues than arousal cues of emotion.

Study on Base Station Topology in Cellular Networks: Take Advantage of Alpha Shapes, Betti Numbers, and Euler Characteristics

Faced with the ever-increasing trend of the cellular network scale, how to quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of the large-scale deployment of base stations (BSs) has become a challenging topic. To this end, a deeper understanding of the cellular network topology is of fundamental significance to be achieved. In this paper, $ α$-Shape, a powerful algebraic geometric tool, is integrated into the analysis of real BS location data for six Asian countries and six European countries, respectively. Firstly, the BS spatial deployments of both Asian and European countries express fractal features based on two different testifying metrics, namely the Betti numbers and the Hurst coefficients. Secondly, it is found out that the log-normal distribution presents the best match to the cellular network topology when the practical BS deployment is characterized by the Euler characteristics.

On the Capacity of Fractal D2D Social Networks With Hierarchical Communications

The maximum capacity of fractal D2D (device-to-device) social networks with both direct and hierarchical communications is studied in this paper. Specifically, the fractal networks are characterized by the direct social connection and the self-similarity. Firstly, for a fractal D2D social network with direct social communications, it is proved that the maximum capacity is $ Θ\left(\frac{1}{\sqrt{n\log n}}\right) $ if a user communicates with one of his/her direct contacts randomly, where $ n $ denotes the total number of users in the network, and it can reach up to $ Θ\left(\frac{1}{\log n}\right) $ if any pair of social contacts with distance $ d $ communicate according to the probability in proportion to $ d^{-β} $. Secondly, since users might get in touch with others without direct social connections through the inter-connected multiple users, the fractal D2D social network with these hierarchical communications is studied as well, and the related capacity is further derived. Our results show that this capacity is mainly affected by the correlation exponent $ε$ of the fractal structure. The capacity is reduced in proportional to $ \frac{1}{\log n} $ if $ 2<ε<3 $, while the reduction coefficient is $ \frac{1}{n} $ if $ ε=3 $.

The Design of Data Acquisition System for EAST Technical Diagnostic System

EAST (Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak) Technical Diagnostic System (TDS) is used to monitor the outlet temperature of all superconducting coils, in case of temperature anomaly, it will trigger safety interlock system to meet EAST device safety. The data acquisition system of TDS is in charge of continuous data acquisition of the nitrogen and helium temperature signals, TDS security alarm and long-term data storage. It supports continuous data acquisition and pulse data acquisition. The data acquisition of the nitrogen temperature signals is based on the PXI technology while obtaining the helium temperature signals from Lake Shore model 224 temperature monitors with VISA standard. After data conversion, all the data will be stored in MySQL and MDSPlus for long-term storage. It should output TDS fault signal and status signal to trigger the safety interlock system to take actions after threshold evaluation of key temperature signals. It publishes part of real-time TDS data to the cryogenic system and provides an information inquiry service to the TDS administrator. The system has been used in 2018 EAST campaign.

Anatomy of the $ρ$ resonance from lattice QCD at the physical point

We propose a strategy to access the $q\bar{q}$ component of the $ρ$ resonance in lattice QCD. Through a mixed action formalism (overlap valence on domain wall sea), the energy of the $q\bar{q}$ component is derived at different valence quark masses, and shows a linear dependence on $m_π^2$. The slope is determined to be $c_1=0.505(3)\,{\rm GeV}^{-1}$, from which the valence $πρ$ sigma term is extracted to be $σ_{πρ}^{(\rm val)}=9.82(6)$ MeV using the Feynman-Hellman theorem. At the physical pion mass, the mass of the $q\bar{q}$ component is interpolated to be $m_ρ=775.9\pm 6.0\pm 1.8$ MeV, which is close to the $ρ$ resonance mass. We also obtain the leptonic decay constant of the $q\bar{q}$ component to be $f_{ρ^-}=208.5\pm 5.5\pm 0.9$ MeV, which can be compared with the experimental value $f_ρ^{\rm exp}\approx 221$ MeV through the relation $f_ρ^{\rm exp}=\sqrt{Z_ρ}f_{ρ^\pm} $ with $Z_ρ\approx 1.13$ being the on-shell wavefunction renormalization of $ρ$ owing to the $ρ-π$ interaction. We emphasize that $m_ρ$ and $f_ρ$ of the $q\bar{q}$ component, which are obtained for the first time from QCD, can be taken as the input parameters of $ρ$ in effective field theory studies where $ρ$ acts as a fundamental degree of freedom.

Resilience Control of DC Shipboard Power Systems

Direct current (DC) network has been recognized as a promising technique, especially for shipboard power systems (SPSs). Fast resilience control is required for an SPS to survive after faults. Towards this end, this paper proposes the indices of survivability and functionality, based on which a two-phase resilience control method is derived. The on/off status of loads are determined in the first phase to maximize survivability, while the functionality of supplying loads are maximized in the second phase. Based on a comprehensive model of a DC shipboard power systems (DC-SPS), the two-phase method renders two mixed-integer non-convex problems. To make the problems tractable, we develop second-order-cone-based convex relaxations, thus converting the problems into mixed-integer convex problems. Though this approach does not necessarily guarantee feasible, hence global, solutions to the original non-convex formulations, we provide additional mild assumptions, which ensures that the convex relaxations are exact when line constraints are not binding. In the case of inexactness, we provide a simple heuristic approach to ensure feasible solutions. Numerical tests empirically confirm the efficacy of the proposed method.

A review of thermal transport and electronic properties of borophene

In recent years, two-dimensional boron sheets (borophene) have been experimentally synthesized and theoretically observed as promising conductor or transistor with novel thermal and electronic properties. We first give a general survey of some notable electronic properties of borophene, including the superconductivity and topological characters. We then mainly review the basic approaches, thermal transport, as well as the mechanical properties of borophene with different configurations. This review gives a general understanding of some of the crucial thermal transport and electronic properties of borophene, and also calls for further experimental investigations and applications on certain scientific community.

Bias Correction Estimation for Continuous-Time Asset Return Model with Jumps

In this paper, local linear estimators are adapted for the unknown infinitesimal coefficients associated with continuous-time asset return model with jumps, which can correct the bias automatically due to their simple bias representation. The integrated diffusion models with jumps, especially infinite activity jumps are mainly investigated. In addition, under mild conditions, the weak consistency and asymptotic normality is provided through the conditional Lindeberg theorem. Furthermore, our method presents advantages in bias correction through simulation whether jumps belong to the finite activity case or infinite activity case. Finally, the estimators are illustrated empirically through the returns for stock index under five-minute high sampling frequency for real application.

Hunting micrometer-sized graphene flakes on gold substrate

Gold is widely used as the substrate material in many graphene devices, due to its superior optoelectronic properties and chemical stability. However, there has been little experimental investigation on the optical contrast of graphene films on Au substrates. Here we report accurate measurement of the optical contrast spectra of few-layer graphene flakes on bulk Au. We used a high-resolution optical microscopy with a 100x magnification objective, accurately determining the thickness of flakes as small as one micrometer in lateral size, which are highly desired in many applications. The results are in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations and confirmed by Raman and AFM measurements. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the optical contrast spectroscopy is sensitive enough to detect the adsorption of a sub-monolayer airborne hydrocarbon molecules, which can reveal whether graphene is con-taminated and opens the opportunity to develop miniaturized and ultrasensitive molecular sensors.

Parity-Check Polar Coding for 5G and Beyond

In this paper, we propose a comprehensive Polar coding solution that integrates reliability calculation, rate matching and parity-check coding. Judging a channel coding design from the industry's viewpoint, there are two primary concerns: (i) low-complexity implementation in application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), and (ii) superior \& stable performance under a wide range of code lengths and rates. The former provides cost- \& power-efficiency which are vital to any commercial system; the latter ensures flexible and robust services. Our design respects both criteria. It demonstrates better performance than existing schemes in literature, but requires only a fraction of implementation cost. With easily-reproducible code construction for arbitrary code rates and lengths, we are able to report "1-bit" fine-granularity simulation results for thousands of cases. The released results can serve as a baseline for future optimization of Polar codes.

Paving the Way to Smart Micro Energy Internet: Concepts, Design Principles, and Engineering Practices

The energy internet is one of the most promising future energy infrastructures that could both enhance energy efficiency and improve its operating flexibility. Analogous to the micro-grid, the micro energy internet emphasizes the distribution level and demand side. This paper proposes concepts and design principles of a smart micro energy internet for accommodating micro-grids, distributed poly-generation systems, energy storage facilities, and associated energy distribution infrastructures. Since the dispatch and control system of the smart micro energy internet is responsible for external disturbances, it should be able to approach a satisfactory operating point while supporting multiple criteria, such as safety, economy, and environmental protection. To realize the vision of a smart micro energy internet, an engineering game theory based energy management system with self-approaching-optimum capability is investigated. Based on the proposed concepts, design principles, and energy management system, this paper presents a prototype of China's first conceptual solar-based smart micro energy internet, established in Qinghai University.
