Optimal Multicast of Tiled 360 VR Video in OFDMA Systems

In this letter, we study optimal multicast of tiled 360 virtual reality (VR) video from one server (base station or access point) to multiple users in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system. For given video quality, we optimize the subcarrier, transmission power and transmission rate allocation to minimize the total transmission power. For given transmission power budget, we optimize the subcarrier, transmission power and transmission rate allocation to maximize the received video quality. These two optimization problems are non-convex problems. We obtain a globally optimal closed-form solution and a near optimal solution of the two problems, separately, both revealing important design insights for multicast of tiled 360 VR video in OFDMA systems.

Optimal Multicast of Tiled 360 VR Video

In this letter, we study optimal multicast of tiled 360 virtual reality (VR) video from one server (base station or access point) to multiple users. We consider random viewing directions and random channel conditions, and adopt time division multiple access (TDMA). For given video quality, we optimize the transmission time and power allocation to minimize the average transmission energy. For given transmission energy budget, we optimize the transmission time and power allocation as well as the encoding rate of each tile to maximize the received video quality. These two optimization problems are challenging non-convex problems. We obtain globally optimal closed-form solutions of the two non-convex problems, which reveal important design insights for multicast of tiled 360 VR video. Finally, numerical results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed solutions.

Energy-Efficient Multi-View Video Transmission with View Synthesis-Enabled Multicast

Multi-view videos (MVVs) provide immersive viewing experience, at the cost of heavy load to wireless networks. Except for further improving viewing experience, view synthesis can create multicast opportunities for efficient transmission of MVVs in multiuser wireless networks, which has not been recognized in existing literature. In this paper, we would like to exploit view synthesis-enabled multicast opportunities for energy-efficient MVV transmission in a multiuser wireless network. Specifically, we first establish a mathematical model to characterize the impact of view synthesis on multicast opportunities and energy consumption. Then, we consider the optimization of view selection, transmission time and power allocation to minimize the weighted sum energy consumption for view transmission and synthesis, which is a challenging mixed discrete-continuous optimization problem. We propose an algorithm to obtain an optimal solution with reduced computational complexity by exploiting optimality properties. To further reduce computational complexity, we also propose two low-complexity algorithms to obtain two suboptimal solutions, based on continuous relaxation and Difference of Convex (DC) programming, respectively. Finally, numerical results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed solutions.

A Study of Piecewise Linear-Quadratic Programs

Motivated by a growing list of nontraditional statistical estimation problems of the piecewise kind, this paper provides a survey of known results supplemented with new results for the class of piecewise linear-quadratic programs. These are linearly constrained optimization problems with piecewise linear-quadratic (PLQ) objective functions. Starting from a study of the representation of such a function in terms of a family of elementary functions consisting of squared affine functions, squared plus-composite-affine functions, and affine functions themselves, we summarize some local properties of a PLQ function in terms of their first and second-order directional derivatives. We extend some well-known necessary and sufficient second-order conditions for local optimality of a quadratic program to a PLQ program and provide a dozen such equivalent conditions for strong, strict, and isolated local optimality, showing in particular that a PLQ program has the same characterizations for local minimality as a standard quadratic program. As a consequence of one such condition, we show that the number of strong, strict, or isolated local minima of a PLQ program is finite; this result supplements a recent result about the finite number of directional stationary objective values. Interestingly, these finiteness results can be uncovered by invoking a very powerful property of subanalytic functions; our proof is fairly elementary, however. We discuss applications of PLQ programs in some modern statistical estimation problems. These problems lead to a special class of unconstrained composite programs involving the non-differentiable $\ell_1$-function, for which we show that the task of verifying the second-order stationary condition can be converted to the problem of checking the copositivity of certain Schur complement on the nonnegative orthant.

Uncoded Placement Optimization for Coded Delivery

We consider the classical coded caching problem as defined by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, where a server with a library of $N$ files of equal size is connected to $K$ users via a shared error-free link. Each user is equipped with a cache with capacity of $M$ files. The goal is to design a static content placement and delivery scheme such that the average load over the shared link is minimized. We first present a class of centralized coded caching schemes consisting of a general content placement strategy specified by a file partition parameter, enabling efficient and flexible content placement, and a specific content delivery strategy, enabling load reduction by exploiting common requests of different users. For the proposed class of schemes, we consider two cases for the optimization of the file partition parameter, depending on whether a large subpacketization level is allowed or not. In the case of an unrestricted subpacketization level, we formulate the coded caching optimization in order to minimize the average load under an arbitrary file popularity. A direct formulation of the problem involves $N2^K$ variables. By imposing some additional conditions, the problem is reduced to a linear program with $N(K+1)$ variables under an arbitrary file popularity and with $K+1$ variables under the uniform file popularity. We can recover Yu {\em et al.}'s optimal scheme for the uniform file popularity as an optimal solution of our problem. When a low subpacketization level is desired, we introduce a subpacketization level constraint involving the $\ell_0$ norm for each file. Again, by imposing the same additional conditions, we can simplify the problem to a difference of two convex functions (DC) problem with $N(K+1)$ variables that can be efficiently solved.

Impact parameter smearing effects on isospin sensitive observables in heavy ion collisions

The validity of impact parameter estimation from the multiplicity of charged particles at low-intermediate energies is checked within the framework of ImQMD model. The simulations show that the multiplicity of charged particles cannot estimate the impact parameter of heavy ion collisions very well, especially for central collisions at the beam energies lower than $\sim$70 MeV/u due to the large fluctuations of the multiplicity of charged particles. The simulation results for the central collisions defined by the charged particle multiplicity are compared to those by using impact parameter b=2 fm and it shows that the charge distribution for $^{112}$Sn +$^{112}$Sn at 50 MeV/u is different evidently for two cases; and the chosen isospin sensitive observable, the coalescence invariant single neutron to proton yield ratio, reduces less than 15\% for neutron-rich systems $^{124,132}$Sn +$^{124}$Sn at $E_{beam}$=50 MeV/u, while the coalescence invariant double neutron to proton yield ratio does not have obvious difference. The sensitivity of the chosen isospin sensitive observables to effective mass splitting is studied for central collisions defined by the multiplicity of charged particles. Our results show that the sensitivity is enhanced for $^{132}$Sn+$^{124}$Sn relative to that for $^{124}$Sn+$^{124}$Sn, and this reaction system should be measured in future experiments to study the effective mass splitting by heavy ion collisions.

Computing the Best Approximation Over the Intersection of a Polyhedral Set and the Doubly Nonnegative Cone

This paper introduces an efficient algorithm for computing the best approximation of a given matrix onto the intersection of linear equalities, inequalities and the doubly nonnegative cone (the cone of all positive semidefinite matrices whose elements are nonnegative). In contrast to directly applying the block coordinate descent type methods, we propose an inexact accelerated (two-)block coordinate descent algorithm to tackle the four-block unconstrained nonsmooth dual program. The proposed algorithm hinges on the efficient semismooth Newton method to solve the subproblems, which have no closed form solutions since the original four blocks are merged into two larger blocks. The $O(1/k^2)$ iteration complexity of the proposed algorithm is established. Extensive numerical results over various large scale semidefinite programming instances from relaxations of combinatorial problems demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

On the Finite Number of Directional Stationary Values of Piecewise Programs

Extending a fundamental result for (indefinite) quadratic programs, this paper shows that certain non-convex piecewise programs have only a finite number of directional stationary values, and thus, possess only finitely many locally minimum values. We present various special cases of our main results, in particular, an application to a least-squares piecewise affine regression problem for which every directional stationary point is locally minimizing.

The Connectivity of Millimeter-Wave Networks in Urban Environments Modeled Using Random Lattices

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication opens up tens of giga-hertz (GHz) spectrum in the mmWave band for use by next-generation wireless systems, thereby solving the problem of spectrum scarcity. Maintaining connectivity stands out to be a key design challenge for mmWave networks deployed in urban regions due to the blockage effect characterizing mmWave propagation. Specifically, mmWave signals can be blocked by buildings and other large urban objects. In this paper, we set out to investigate the blockage effect on the connectivity of mmWave networks in a Manhattan-type urban region modeled using a random regular lattice while base stations (BSs) are Poisson distributed in the plane. In particular, we analyze the connectivity probability that a typical user is within the transmission range of a BS and connected by a line-of-sight. Using random lattice and stochastic geometry theories, different lower bounds on the connectivity probability are derived as functions of the buildings' size and probability of a lattice cell being occupied by a building as well as BS density and transmission range. The asymptotic connectivity probability is also derived for cases of dense buildings. Last, the results are extended to heterogeneous networks. Our study yields closed-form relations between the parameters of the building process and the BS process, providing useful guidelines for practical mmWave network deployment.

Enhancing Performance of Random Caching in Large-Scale Heterogeneous Wireless Networks with Random Discontinuous Transmission

To make better use of file diversity provided by random caching and improve the successful transmission probability (STP) of a file, we consider retransmissions with random discontinuous transmission (DTX) in a large-scale cache-enabled heterogeneous wireless network (HetNet) employing random caching. We analyze and optimize the STP in two mobility scenarios, i.e., the high mobility scenario and the static scenario. First, in each scenario, by using tools from stochastic geometry, we obtain the closed-form expressions for the STP in the general and low signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) threshold regimes, respectively. The analysis shows that a larger caching probability corresponds to a higher STP in both scenarios; random DTX can improve the STP in the static scenario and its benefit gradually diminishes when mobility increases. Then, in each scenario, we consider the maximization of the STP with respect to the caching probability and the BS activity probability, which is a challenging non-convex optimization problem. In particular, in the high mobility scenario, we obtain a globally optimal solution using interior point method. In the static scenario, we develop a low-complexity iterative algorithm to obtain a stationary point using alternating optimization. Finally, numerical results show that the proposed solutions achieve significant gains over existing baseline schemes and can well adapt to the changes of the system parameters to wisely utilize storage resources and transmission opportunities.

Enhancing Performance of Random Caching in Large-Scale Wireless Networks with Multiple Receive Antennas

To improve signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) and make better use of file diversity provided by random caching, we consider two types of linear receivers, i.e., maximal ratio combining (MRC) receiver and partial zero forcing (PZF) receiver, at users in a large-scale cache-enabled single-input multi-output (SIMO) network. First, for each receiver, by utilizing tools from stochastic geometry, we derive a tractable expression and a tight upper bound for the successful transmission probability (STP). In the case of the MRC receiver, we also derive a closed-form expression for the asymptotic outage probability in the low SIR threshold regime. Then, for each receiver, we maximize the STP. In the case of the MRC receiver, we consider the maximization of the tight upper bound on the STP by optimizing the caching distribution, which is a non-convex problem. We obtain a stationary point, by solving an equivalent difference of convex (DC) programming problem using concave-convex procedure (CCCP). We also obtain a closed-form asymptotically optimal solution in the low SIR threshold regime. In the case of the PZF receiver, we consider the maximization of the tight upper bound on the STP by optimizing the caching distribution and the degrees of freedom (DoF) allocation (for boosting the signal power), which is a mixed discrete-continuous problem. Based on structural properties, we obtain a low-complexity near optimal solution by using an alternating optimization approach. The analysis and optimization results reveal the impact of antenna resource at users on random caching. Finally, by numerical results, we show that the random caching design with the PZF receiver achieves significant performance gains over the random caching design with the MRC receiver and some baseline caching designs.

Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation for Cache-Assisted Mobile Edge Computing

In this paper, we jointly consider communication, caching and computation in a multi-user cache-assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) system, consisting of one base station (BS) of caching and computing capabilities and multiple users with computation-intensive and latency-sensitive applications. We propose a joint caching and offloading mechanism which involves task uploading and executing for tasks with uncached computation results as well as computation result downloading for all tasks at the BS, and efficiently utilizes multi-user diversity and multicasting opportunities. Then, we formulate the average total energy minimization problem subject to the caching and deadline constraints to optimally allocate the storage resource at the BS for caching computation results as well as the uploading and downloading time durations. The problem is a challenging mixed discrete-continuous optimization problem. We show that strong duality holds, and obtain an optimal solution using a dual method. To reduce the computational complexity, we further propose a low-complexity suboptimal solution. Finally, numerical results show that the proposed suboptimal solution outperforms existing comparison schemes.

Structural Properties of Uncoded Placement Optimization for Coded Delivery

A centralized coded caching scheme has been proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen to reduce the worst-case load of a network consisting of a server with access to N files and connected through a shared link to K users, each equipped with a cache of size M. However, this centralized coded caching scheme is not able to take advantage of a non-uniform, possibly very skewed, file popularity distribution. In this work, we consider the same network setting but aim to reduce the average load under an arbitrary (known) file popularity distribution. First, we consider a class of centralized coded caching schemes utilizing general uncoded placement and a specific coded delivery strategy, which are specified by a general file partition parameter. Then, we formulate the coded caching design optimization problem over the considered class of schemes with 2^K2^N variables to minimize the average load by optimizing the file partition parameter under an arbitrary file popularity. Furthermore, we show that the optimization problem is convex, and the resulting optimal solution generally improves upon known schemes. Next, we analyze structural properties of the optimization problem to obtain design insights and reduce the complexity. Specifically, we obtain an equivalent linear optimization problem with (K+1)N variables under an arbitrary file popularity and an equivalent linear optimization problem with K+1 variables under the uniform file popularity. Under the uniform file popularity, we also obtain the closed form optimal solution, which corresponds to Maddah-Ali-Niesen's centralized coded caching scheme. Finally, we present an information-theoretic converse bound on the average load under an arbitrary file popularity.

Multi-Quality Multicast Beamforming based on Scalable Video Coding

In this paper, we consider multi-quality multicast beamforming of a video stream from a multi-antenna base station (BS) to multiple single-antenna users receiving different qualities of the same video stream, via scalable video coding (SVC). Leveraging the layered structure of SVC and exploiting superposition coding (SC) as well as successive interference cancelation (SIC), we propose a layer-based multi-quality multicast beamforming scheme. To reduce the complexity, we also propose a quality-based multi-quality multicast beamforming scheme, which further utilizes the layered structure of SVC and quality information of all users. Under each scheme, for given quality requirements of all users, we formulate the corresponding optimal beamforming design as a non-convex power minimization problem, and obtain a globally optimal solution for a class of special cases as well as a locally optimal solution for the general case. Then, we show that the minimum total transmission power of the quality-based power minimization problem is the same as that of the layer-based power minimization problem, although the former incurs a lower computational complexity. Next, we consider the optimal joint layer selection and quality-based multi quality multicast beamforming design to maximize the total utility representing the satisfaction with the received video quality for all users under a given maximum transmission power budget, which is NP-hard in general. By exploiting the optimal solution of the quality-based power minimization problem, we develop a greedy algorithm to obtain a near optimal solution. Finally, numerical results show that the proposed solutions achieve better performance than existing solutions.

Joint Pushing and Caching for Bandwidth Utilization Maximization in Wireless Networks

Joint pushing and caching is recognized as an efficient remedy to the problem of spectrum scarcity incurred by tremendous mobile data traffic. In this paper, by exploiting storage resources at end users and predictability of user demand processes, we design the optimal joint pushing and caching policy to maximize bandwidth utilization, which is of fundamental importance to mobile telecom carriers. In particular, we formulate the stochastic optimization problem as an infinite horizon average cost Markov Decision Process (MDP), for which there generally exist only numerical solutions without many insights. By structural analysis, we show how the optimal policy achieves a balance between the current transmission cost and the future average transmission cost. In addition, we show that the optimal average transmission cost decreases with the cache size, revealing a tradeoff between the cache size and the bandwidth utilization. Then, due to the fact that obtaining a numerical optimal solution suffers the curse of dimensionality and implementing it requires a centralized controller and global system information, we develop a decentralized policy with polynomial complexity w.r.t. the numbers of users and files as well as cache size, by a linear approximation of the value function and optimization relaxation techniques. Next, we propose an online decentralized algorithm to implement the proposed low-complexity decentralized policy using the technique of Q-learning, when priori knowledge of user demand processes is not available. Finally, using numerical results, we demonstrate the advantage of the proposed solutions over some existing designs. The results in this paper offer useful guidelines for designing practical cache-enabled content-centric wireless networks.

On the R-superlinear convergence of the KKT residues generated by the augmented Lagrangian method for convex composite conic programming

Due to the possible lack of primal-dual-type error bounds, the superlinear convergence for the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) residues of the sequence generated by augmented Lagrangian method (ALM) for solving convex composite conic programming (CCCP) has long been an outstanding open question. In this paper, we aim to resolve this issue by first conducting convergence rate analysis for the ALM with Rockafellar's stopping criteria under only a mild quadratic growth condition on the dual of CCCP. More importantly, by further assuming that the Robinson constraint qualification holds, we establish the R-superlinear convergence of the KKT residues of the iterative sequence under easy-to-implement stopping criteria {for} the augmented Lagrangian subproblems. Equipped with this discovery, we gain insightful interpretations on the impressive numerical performance of several recently developed semismooth Newton-CG based ALM solvers for solving linear and convex quadratic semidefinite programming.

Joint and Competitive Caching Designs in Large-Scale Multi-Tier Wireless Multicasting Networks

Caching and multicasting are two promising methods to support massive content delivery in multi-tier wireless networks. In this paper, we consider a random caching and multicasting scheme with caching distributions in the two tiers as design parameters, to achieve efficient content dissemination in a two-tier large-scale cache-enabled wireless multicasting network. First, we derive tractable expressions for the successful transmission probabilities in the general region as well as the high SNR and high user density region, respectively, utilizing tools from stochastic geometry. Then, for the case of a single operator for the two tiers, we formulate the optimal joint caching design problem to maximize the successful transmission probability in the asymptotic region, which is nonconvex in general. By using the block successive approximate optimization technique, we develop an iterative algorithm, which is shown to converge to a stationary point. Next, for the case of two different operators, one for each tier, we formulate the competitive caching design game where each tier maximizes its successful transmission probability in the asymptotic region. We show that the game has a unique Nash equilibrium (NE) and develop an iterative algorithm, which is shown to converge to the NE under a mild condition. Finally, by numerical simulations, we show that the proposed designs achieve significant gains over existing schemes.

Quadratic growth conditions for convex matrix optimization problems associated with spectral functions

In this paper, we provide two types of sufficient conditions for ensuring the quadratic growth conditions of a class of constrained convex symmetric and non-symmetric matrix optimization problems regularized by nonsmooth spectral functions. These sufficient conditions are derived via the study of the $\mathcal{C}^2$-cone reducibility of spectral functions and the metric subregularity of their subdifferentials, respectively. As an application, we demonstrate how quadratic growth conditions are used to guarantee the desirable fast convergence rates of the augmented Lagrangian methods (ALM) for solving convex matrix optimization problems. Numerical experiments on an easy-to-implement ALM applied to the fastest mixing Markov chain problem are also presented to illustrate the significance of the obtained results.
