Cross-MPI: Cross-scale Stereo for Image Super-Resolution using Multiplane Images

Various combinations of cameras enrich computational photography, among which reference-based superresolution (RefSR) plays a critical role in multiscale imaging systems. However, existing RefSR approaches fail to accomplish high-fidelity super-resolution under a large resolution gap, e.g., 8x upscaling, due to the lower consideration of the underlying scene structure. In this paper, we aim to solve the RefSR problem in actual multiscale camera systems inspired by multiplane image (MPI) representation. Specifically, we propose Cross-MPI, an end-to-end RefSR network composed of a novel plane-aware attention-based MPI mechanism, a multiscale guided upsampling module as well as a super-resolution (SR) synthesis and fusion module. Instead of using a direct and exhaustive matching between the cross-scale stereo, the proposed plane-aware attention mechanism fully utilizes the concealed scene structure for efficient attention-based correspondence searching. Further combined with a gentle coarse-to-fine guided upsampling strategy, the proposed Cross-MPI can achieve a robust and accurate detail transmission. Experimental results on both digitally synthesized and optical zoom cross-scale data show that the Cross-MPI framework can achieve superior performance against the existing RefSR methods and is a real fit for actual multiscale camera systems even with large-scale differences.

V-Gas: Generating High Gas Consumption Inputs to Avoid Out-of-Gas Vulnerability

The out-of-gas error occurs when smart contract programs are provided with inputs that cause excessive gas consumption, and would be easily exploited to make the DoS attack. Multiple approaches have been proposed to estimate the gas limit of a function in smart contracts to avoid such error. However, under estimation often happens when the contract is complicated. In this work, we propose V-Gas, which could automatically generate inputs that maximizes the gas cost and reduce the under estimation cases. V-Gas is designed based on feedback-directed mutational fuzz testing. First, V-Gas builds the gas weighted control flow graph (CFG) of functions in smart contracts. Then, V-Gas develops gas consumption guided selection and mutation strategies to generate the input that maximize the gas consumption. For evaluation, we implement V-Gas based on js-evm, a widely used ethereum virtual machine written in javascript, and conduct experiments on 736 real-world transactions recorded on Ethereum. 44.02\% of the transactions would have out-of-gas errors under the estimation results given by solc, means that the recorded real gas consumption for those recorded transactions is larger than the gas limit value estimated by solc. While V-Gas could reduce the under estimation ratio to 13.86\%. Furthermore, V-Gas has exposed 25 previously unknown out-of-gas vulnerabilities in those widely-used smart contracts, 5 of which have been assigned unique CVE identifiers in the US National Vulnerability Database.

Probing quasi-long-range ordering by magnetostriction in monolayer CoPS3

Mermin-Wagner-Coleman theorem predicts no long-range magnetic order at finite temperature in the two-dimensional (2D) isotropic systems, but a quasi-long-range order with a divergent correlation length at the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition for planar magnets. As a representative of two-dimensional planar antiferromagnets, single-layer CoPS3 carries the promise of monolayer antiferromagnetic platforms for the ultimately thin spintronics. Here, with the aid of magnetostriction which is sensitive to the local magnetic order, we observe the signatured phonon mode splitting of below TKT in monolayer CoPS3, revealing the presence of quasi-long-range ordering in XY-type antiferromagnet. Moreover, the ratio (J'/J) between the interlayer and intralayer interactions, which characterizes the 2D behaviors, is evaluated to be around 0.03 for the first time. Our results provide an efficient method to detect the quasi-long-range antiferromagnetic ordering in the two-dimensional magnets down to monolayer limit.

Tuning-free Plug-and-Play Proximal Algorithm for Inverse Imaging Problems

Plug-and-play (PnP) is a non-convex framework that combines ADMM or other proximal algorithms with advanced denoiser priors. Recently, PnP has achieved great empirical success, especially with the integration of deep learning-based denoisers. However, a key problem of PnP based approaches is that they require manual parameter tweaking. It is necessary to obtain high-quality results across the high discrepancy in terms of imaging conditions and varying scene content. In this work, we present a tuning-free PnP proximal algorithm, which can automatically determine the internal parameters including the penalty parameter, the denoising strength and the terminal time. A key part of our approach is to develop a policy network for automatic search of parameters, which can be effectively learned via mixed model-free and model-based deep reinforcement learning. We demonstrate, through numerical and visual experiments, that the learned policy can customize different parameters for different states, and often more efficient and effective than existing handcrafted criteria. Moreover, we discuss the practical considerations of the plugged denoisers, which together with our learned policy yield state-of-the-art results. This is prevalent on both linear and nonlinear exemplary inverse imaging problems, and in particular, we show promising results on Compressed Sensing MRI and phase retrieval.

Enhanced magnetocaloric effect and magnetic phase diagrams of single-crystal GdCrO$_3$

The crystalline structure, magnetism, and magnetocaloric effect of a GdCrO$_3$ single crystal grown with the laser-diode-heated floating-zone technique have been studied. The GdCrO$_3$ single crystal crystallizes into an orthorhombic structure with the space group $Pmnb$ at room temperature. Upon cooling, under a magnetic field of 0.1 T, it undergoes a magnetic phase transition at $T_{\textrm{N-Cr}} =$ 169.28(2) K with Cr$^{3+}$ ions forming a canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure, accompanied by a weak ferromagnetism. Subsequently, a spin reorientation takes place at $T_{\textrm{SR}} =$ 5.18(2) K due to Gd$^{3+}$-Cr$^{3+}$ magnetic couplings. Finally, the long-range AFM order of Gd$^{3+}$ ions establishes at $T_{\textrm{N-Gd}} =$ 2.10(2) K. Taking into account the temperature-(in)dependent components of Cr$^{3+}$ moments, we obtained an ideal model for describing the paramagnetic behavior of Gd$^{3+}$ ions within 30--140 K. We observed a magnetic reversal (positive $\rightarrow$ negative $\rightarrow$ positive) at 50 Oe with a minimum centering around 162 K. In the studied temperature range of 1.8-300 K, there exists a strong competition between magnetic susceptibilities of Gd$^{3+}$ and Cr$^{3+}$ ions, leading to puzzling magnetic phenomena. We have built the magnetic-field-dependent phase diagrams of $T_{\textrm{N-Gd}}$, $T_{\textrm{SR}}$, and $T_{\textrm{N-Cr}}$, shedding light on the nature of the intriguing magnetism. Moreover, we calculated the magnetic entropy change and obtained a maximum value at 6 K and $Δμ_0H$ = 14 T, i.e., -$ΔS_{\textrm{M}} \approx$ 57.5 J/kg K. Among all RCrO$_3$ (R = $4f^n$ rare earths, $n =$ 7-14) compounds, the single-crystal GdCrO$_3$ compound exhibits the highest magnetic entropy change, as well as an enhanced adiabatic temperature, creating a prominent magnetocaloric effect for potential application in magnetic refrigeration.

Dynamic fingerprint of fractionalized excitations in single-crystalline Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr

Quantum spin liquid (QSL) represents a new class of condensed matter states characterized by the long-range many-body entanglement of topological orders. The most prominent feature of the elusive QSL state is the existence of fractionalized spin excitations. Subject to the strong quantum fluctuations, the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic system on a kagome lattice is the promising candidate for hosting a QSL ground state, but the structurally ideal realization is rare. Here, we report Raman scattering on the single crystalline Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr, and confirm that the ideal kagome structure remains down to low temperatures without any lattice distortion by the angle-resolved polarized Raman responses and second-harmonic-generation measurements. Furthermore, at low temperatures the Raman scattering reveals a continuum of the spin excitations in Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr, in contrast to the sharp magnon peak in the ordered kagome antiferromagnet EuCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$. Such magnetic Raman continuum, in particular, the substantial low-energy one-pair spinon excitation serves as strong evidence for fractionalized spin excitations in Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr.

Crystalline and magnetic structures, magnetization, heat capacity and anisotropic magnetostriction effect in a yttrium-chromium oxide

We have studied a nearly stoichiometric insulating Y$_{0.97(2)}$Cr$_{0.98(2)}$O$_{3.00(2)}$ single crystal by performing measurements of magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction. Albeit that the YCrO$_3$ compound behaviors like a soft ferromagnet with a coersive force of $\sim$ 0.05 T, there exist strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between Cr$^{3+}$ spins due to a strongly negative paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature, i.e., -433.2(6) K. The coexistence of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism may indicate a canted AFM structure. The AFM phase transition occurs at $T_\textrm{N} =$ 141.5(1) K, which increases to $T_\textrm{N}$(5T) = 144.5(1) K at 5 T. Within the accuracy of the present neuron-diffraction studies, we determine a G-type AFM structure with a propagation vector \textbf{k} = (1 1 0) and Cr$^{3+}$ spin directions along the crystallographic \emph{c} axis of the orthorhombic structure with space group \emph{Pnma} below $T_\textrm{N}$. At 12 K, the refined moment size is 2.45(6) $μ_\textrm{B}$, $\sim$ 82\% of the theoretical saturation value 3 $μ_\textrm{B}$. The Cr$^{3+}$ spin interactions are probably two-dimensional Ising like within the reciprocal (1 1 0) scattering plane. Below $T_\textrm{N}$, the lattice configuration (\emph{a}, \emph{b}, \emph{c}, and \emph{V}) deviates largely downward from the Gr$\ddot{\textrm{u}}$neisen law, displaying an anisotropic magnetostriction effect and a magnetoelastic effect. Especially, the sample contraction upon cooling is enhanced below the AFM transition temperature. There is evidence to suggest that the actual crystalline symmetry of YCrO$_3$ compound is probably lower than the currently assumed one. Additionally, we compared the $t_{2\textrm{g}}$ YCrO$_3$ and the $e_\textrm{g}$ La$_{7/8}$Sr$_{1/8}$MnO$_3$ single crystals for a further understanding of the reason for the possible symmetry lowering.

EasyQuant: Post-training Quantization via Scale Optimization

The 8 bits quantization has been widely applied to accelerate network inference in various deep learning applications. There are two kinds of quantization methods, training-based quantization and post-training quantization. Training-based approach suffers from a cumbersome training process, while post-training quantization may lead to unacceptable accuracy drop. In this paper, we present an efficient and simple post-training method via scale optimization, named EasyQuant (EQ),that could obtain comparable accuracy with the training-based method.Specifically, we first alternately optimize scales of weights and activations for all layers target at convolutional outputs to further obtain the high quantization precision. Then, we lower down bit width to INT7 both for weights and activations, and adopt INT16 intermediate storage and integer Winograd convolution implementation to accelerate inference.Experimental results on various computer vision tasks show that EQ outperforms the TensorRT method and can achieve near INT8 accuracy in 7 bits width post-training.

A Physics-based Noise Formation Model for Extreme Low-light Raw Denoising

Lacking rich and realistic data, learned single image denoising algorithms generalize poorly to real raw images that do not resemble the data used for training. Although the problem can be alleviated by the heteroscedastic Gaussian model for noise synthesis, the noise sources caused by digital camera electronics are still largely overlooked, despite their significant effect on raw measurement, especially under extremely low-light condition. To address this issue, we present a highly accurate noise formation model based on the characteristics of CMOS photosensors, thereby enabling us to synthesize realistic samples that better match the physics of image formation process. Given the proposed noise model, we additionally propose a method to calibrate the noise parameters for available modern digital cameras, which is simple and reproducible for any new device. We systematically study the generalizability of a neural network trained with existing schemes, by introducing a new low-light denoising dataset that covers many modern digital cameras from diverse brands. Extensive empirical results collectively show that by utilizing our proposed noise formation model, a network can reach the capability as if it had been trained with rich real data, which demonstrates the effectiveness of our noise formation model.

Core-level x-ray photoemission and Raman spectroscopy studies on electronic structures in Mott-Hubbard type nickelate oxide NdNiO$_2$

We perform core-level X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and electronic Raman scattering studies of electronic structures and spin fluctuations in the bulk samples of the nickelate oxide NdNiO$_2$. According to Nd $3d$ and O $1s$ XPS spectra, we conclude that NdNiO$_2$ has a large transfer energy. From the analysis of the main line of the Ni $2p_{3/2}$ XPS, we confirm the NiO$_2$ planes in NdNiO$_2$ are of Mott-Hubbard type in the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen scheme. The two-magnon peak in the Raman scattering provides direct evidence for the strong spin-fluctuation in NdNiO$_2$. The peak position determines the antiferromagnetic exchange $J=25$~meV. Our experimental results agree well with our previous theoretical results.

3D Quasi-Recurrent Neural Network for Hyperspectral Image Denoising

In this paper, we propose an alternating directional 3D quasi-recurrent neural network for hyperspectral image (HSI) denoising, which can effectively embed the domain knowledge -- structural spatio-spectral correlation and global correlation along spectrum. Specifically, 3D convolution is utilized to extract structural spatio-spectral correlation in an HSI, while a quasi-recurrent pooling function is employed to capture the global correlation along spectrum. Moreover, alternating directional structure is introduced to eliminate the causal dependency with no additional computation cost. The proposed model is capable of modeling spatio-spectral dependency while preserving the flexibility towards HSIs with arbitrary number of bands. Extensive experiments on HSI denoising demonstrate significant improvement over state-of-the-arts under various noise settings, in terms of both restoration accuracy and computation time. Our code is available at https://github.com/Vandermode/QRNN3D.

EVMFuzz: Differential Fuzz Testing of Ethereum Virtual Machine

Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is the run-time environment for smart contracts and its vulnerabilities may lead to serious problems to the Ethereum ecology. With lots of techniques being developed for the validation of smart contracts, the security problems of EVM have not been well-studied. In this paper, we propose EVMFuzz, aiming to detect vulnerabilities of EVMs with differential fuzz testing. The core idea of EVMFuzz is to continuously generate seed contracts for different EVMs' execution, so as to find as many inconsistencies among execution results as possible, eventually discover vulnerabilities with output cross-referencing. First, we present the evaluation metric for the internal inconsistency indicator, such as the opcode sequence executed and gas used. Then, we construct seed contracts via a set of predefined mutators and employ dynamic priority scheduling algorithm to guide seed contracts selection and maximize the inconsistency. Finally, we leverage different EVMs as crossreferencing oracles to avoid manual checking of the execution output. For evaluation, we conducted large-scale mutation on 36,295 real-world smart contracts and generated 253,153 smart contracts. Among them, 66.2% showed differential performance, including 1,596 variant contracts triggered inconsistent output among EVMs. Accompanied by manual root cause analysis, we found 5 previously unknown security bugs in four widely used EVMs, and all had been included in Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database.

Single Image Reflection Removal Exploiting Misaligned Training Data and Network Enhancements

Removing undesirable reflections from a single image captured through a glass window is of practical importance to visual computing systems. Although state-of-the-art methods can obtain decent results in certain situations, performance declines significantly when tackling more general real-world cases. These failures stem from the intrinsic difficulty of single image reflection removal -- the fundamental ill-posedness of the problem, and the insufficiency of densely-labeled training data needed for resolving this ambiguity within learning-based neural network pipelines. In this paper, we address these issues by exploiting targeted network enhancements and the novel use of misaligned data. For the former, we augment a baseline network architecture by embedding context encoding modules that are capable of leveraging high-level contextual clues to reduce indeterminacy within areas containing strong reflections. For the latter, we introduce an alignment-invariant loss function that facilitates exploiting misaligned real-world training data that is much easier to collect. Experimental results collectively show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art with aligned data, and that significant improvements are possible when using additional misaligned data.

Intersubband Quantum Disc-in-Nanowire Photodetectors with Normal-incidence Response in the Long-wavelength Infrared

Semiconductor nanowires offer great potential for realizing broadband photodetectors that are compatible with silicon technology. However, the spectral range of such detectors has so far been limited to selected regions in the ultraviolet, visible and near infrared. Here, we report on broadband nanowire heterostructure array photodetectors exhibiting a photoresponse from the visible to long-wavelength infrared. In particular, the infrared response from 3-20 um is enabled by normal incidence excitation of intersubband transitions in low-bandgap InAsP quantum discs synthesized axially within InP nanowires. The optical characteristics are explained by the excitation of the longitudinal component of optical modes in the photonic crystal formed by the nanostructured portion of the detectors, combined with a non-symmetric potential profile of the discs resulting from synthesis. Our results provide a generalizable insight into how broadband nanowire photodetectors may be designed, and how engineered nanowire heterostructures open up new fascinating opportunities for optoelectronics.

Image Restoration from Patch-based Compressed Sensing Measurement

A series of methods have been proposed to reconstruct an image from compressively sensed random measurement, but most of them have high time complexity and are inappropriate for patch-based compressed sensing capture, because of their serious blocky artifacts in the restoration results. In this paper, we present a non-iterative image reconstruction method from patch-based compressively sensed random measurement. Our method features two cascaded networks based on residual convolution neural network to learn the end-to-end full image restoration, which is capable of reconstructing image patches and removing the blocky effect with low time cost. Experimental results on synthetic and real data show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art compressive sensing (CS) reconstruction methods with patch-based CS measurement. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in more general setting, we apply the de-block process in our method to JPEG compression artifacts removal and achieve outstanding performance as well.

Blow-up solutions and peakons to a generalized $μ$-Camassa-Holm integrable equation

Consideration here is a generalized $μ$-type integrable equation, which can be regarded as a generalization to both the $μ$-Camassa-Holm and modified $μ$-Camassa-Holm equations. It is shown that the proposed equation is formally integrable with the Lax-pair and the bi-Hamiltonian structure and its scale limit is an integrable model of hydrodynamical systems describing short capillary-gravity waves. Local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem in the suitable Sobolev space is established by the viscosity method. Existence of peaked traveling-wave solutions and formation of singularities of solutions for the equation are investigated. It is found that the equation admits a single peaked soliton and multi-peakon solutions. The effects of varying $μ$-Camassa-Holm and modified $μ$-Camassa-Holm nonlocal nonlinearities on blow-up criteria and wave breaking are illustrated in detail. Our analysis relies on the method of characteristics and conserved quantities and is proceeded with a priori differential estimates.

On the Cauchy problem for the integrable Camassa-Holm type equation with cubic nonlinearity

Considered in this paper is the modified Camassa-Holm equation with cubic nonlinearity, which is integrable and admits the single peaked solitons and multi-peakon solutions. The short-wave limit of this equation is known as the short-pulse equation. The main investigation is the Cauchy problem of the modified Camassa-Holm equation with qualitative properties of its solutions. It is firstly shown that the equation is locally well-posed in a range of the Besov spaces. The blow-up scenario and the lower bound of the maximal time of existence are then determined. A blow-up mechanism for solutions with certain initial profiles is described in detail and nonexistence of the smooth traveling wave solutions is also demonstrated. In addition, the persistence properties of the strong solutions for the equation are obtained.
