A central tidal disruption event candidate in high redshift quasar SDSS J000118.70+003314.0

We report a high-redshift ($z=1.404$) tidal disruption event (TDE) candidate in SDSS J000118.70+003314.0 (SDSS J0001), which is a quasar with apparent broad Mg~{\sc ii} emission line. The long-term variability in its nine-year photometric $ugriz$-band light curves, obtained from the SDSS Stripe82 and the PHOTOOBJALL databases, can be described by the conventional TDE model. Our results suggest that the TDE is a main-sequence star with mass of $1.905_{-0.009}^{+0.023}{\rm M_\odot}$ tidally disrupted by a black hole (BH) with mass {$6.5_{-2.6}^{+3.5}\times10^7{\rm M_\odot}$}. The BH mass is about 7.5 times smaller than the virial BH mass derived from the broad Mg~{\sc ii} emission line, which can be explained by non-virial dynamic properties of broad emission lines from TDEs debris. Furthermore, we examine the probability that the event results from intrinsic variability of quasars, which is about $0.009\%$, through applications of the DRW/CAR process. Alternative explanations for the event are also discussed, such as the scenarios of dust obscurations, microlensing and accretion. Our results provide clues to support that TDEs could be detectable in broad line quasars as well as in quiescent galaxies, and to indicate the variability of some active galactic nuclei may be partly attributed to central TDEs.

Double-Shot 3D Shape Measurement with a Dual-Branch Network for Structured Light Projection Profilometry

The structured light (SL)-based three-dimensional (3D) measurement techniques with deep learning have been widely studied to improve measurement efficiency, among which fringe projection profilometry (FPP) and speckle projection profilometry (SPP) are two popular methods. However, they generally use a single projection pattern for reconstruction, resulting in fringe order ambiguity or poor reconstruction accuracy. To alleviate these problems, we propose a parallel dual-branch Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-Transformer network (PDCNet), to take advantage of convolutional operations and self-attention mechanisms for processing different SL modalities. Within PDCNet, a Transformer branch is used to capture global perception in the fringe images, while a CNN branch is designed to collect local details in the speckle images. To fully integrate complementary features, we design a double-stream attention aggregation module (DAAM) that consists of a parallel attention subnetwork for aggregating multi-scale spatial structure information. This module can dynamically retain local and global representations to the maximum extent. Moreover, an adaptive mixture density head with bimodal Gaussian distribution is proposed for learning a representation that is precise near discontinuities. Compared to the standard disparity regression strategy, this adaptive mixture head can effectively improve performance at object boundaries. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method can reduce fringe order ambiguity while producing high-accuracy results on self-made datasets.

Wavepacket interference of two photons through a beam splitter: from temporal entanglement to wavepacket shaping

Quantum interferences based on beam splitting are widely used for entanglement. However, the quantitative measurement of the entanglement in terms of temporal modes and wavepacket shaping facilitated by this entanglement remain unexplored. Here we analytically study the interference of two photons with different temporal shapes through a beam splitter (BS), then propose its application in temporal entanglement and shaping of photons. The temporal entanglement described by Von Neumann entropy is determined by the splitting ratio of BS and temporal indistinguishability of input photons. We found that maximum mode entanglement can be achieved with a 50/50 BS configuration, enabling the generation of a Bell state encoded in temporal modes, independent of the exact form of the input photons. Then, detecting one of the entangled photons at a specific time enables the probabilistic shaping of the other photon. This process can shape the exponentially decaying (ED) wavepacket into the ED sine shapes, which can be further shaped into Gaussian shapes with fidelity exceeding 99\%. The temporal entanglement and shaping of photons based on interference may solve the shape mismatch issues in large-scale optical quantum networks.

Near-symmetric multiport beam splitting for high-NOON state preparation on nonlocal metasurface

Polarization beam splitting (BS) has been implemented on gradient metasurface with local response for entanglement manipulation and state reconstruction. To realize more degrees of light modulation, nonlocal modes, manifested as wavelength and momentum selectivity, should be applied into metasurface BS. Here, we demonstrate that single nonlocal phase gradient metasurface(NPGM) can function as a series of independent near-symmetric multiport BS,constructed by its momentum-polarization mode subspaces. Then, using any of above BS with simultaneous multiphoton interference, high-photon NOON states are prepared with high success probability and fidelity. For example,four-mode four-photon NOON state is obtained with 34.8% success probability and fidelity of 99.9%, greatly higher than those previously reported. With unique capability of multiphoton interference, this multiport BS on single NPGM can be directly used in the on-chip quantum photonics. Also, the efficient generation of high-photon NOON states with above BS has potential applications in quantum precision measurement.

Topological-Vacuum-Induced Strong Photon-Exciton Coupling

The electromagnetic vacuum construction based on micro-nano photonic structures is able to engineer the photon-exciton interaction at the single quantum level. Here, through engineering the electromagnetic vacuum background formed by edge states, we demonstrate a strong photon-exciton coupling in topological photonic crystal containing a dielectric nanoantenna. By guiding the scattering photons into the edge states, the linewidth of nanoantenna with more than hundred nanometers in air can be reduced into only several nanometers due to topological robustness, so that both strong coupling condition and high photon collection efficiency can be achieved. Electromagnetic vacuum background under topological protection holds great promise for controlling the light-matter interaction in quantum optics and on-chip quantum information.

Cascade enhancement and efficient collection of single photon emission under topological protection

High emission rate, high collection efficiency, and immunity to the defects are the requirements of implementing on-chip single photon sources. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that both cascade enhancement and high collection efficiency of emitted photons from single emitter can be achieved simultaneously in topological photonic crystal containing a resonant dielectric nanodisk. The nanodisk excited by a magnetic emitter can be regarded as a large equivalent magnetic dipole. The near-field overlapping between this equivalent magnetic dipole and edge state enables to achieve a cascade enhancement of single photon emission with Purcell factor exceeding 4*10^3. These emitted photons are guided into edge states with collection efficiency of more than 90%, which is also corresponding to quantum yield due to topological anti-scattering and the absence of absorption. The proposed mechanism under topological protection has potential applications in on-chip light-matter interaction, quantum light sources, and nanolasers.

Breeding the Cat Through Superposition of Two Schrodinger Kittens Based on Coupled Waveguides

Optical Schrodinger's cat (SC) is highly anticipated because of the potential of realizing fault-tolerant quantum computing, but the practical merit is only shown when the amplitude is larger than 2. However, such high-amplitude cats have not been prepared due to the limitations rooted in the existing method. Here, we demonstrate a principle that a large SC-like state can be generated by the superposition of two kittens in which two nearby coherent states interfere and grow to an enlarged coherent-like state. Further, we propose a scheme to breed the cat beyond the limitation in the former works with a high probability by realizing the superposition of two SCs in coupled waveguides. The principle and scheme demonstrated here provide a new perspective on understanding quantum superposition in phase space and a better solution for the efficient generation of SCs on chips.

Quantum CZ Gate based on Single Gradient Metasurface

We propose a scheme to realize quantum controlled-Z (CZ) gates through single gradient metasurface. Using its unique parallel beam-splitting feature, i.e., a series of connected beam splitters with the same splitting ratio, one metasurface can support a CZ gate, several independent CZ gates, or a cascaded CZ gates. Taking advantage of the input polarization determined output path-locking feature, both polarization-encoded and path-encoded CZ gates can be demonstrated on the same metasurface, which further improves the integration level of quantum devices. Our research paves the way for integrating quantum logical function through the metasurface.

Effectiveness of Self-Assessment Software to Evaluate Preclinical Operative Procedures

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of digital scanning techniques for self-assessment and of preparations and restorations in preclinical dental education when compared to traditional faculty grading. Methods: Forty-four separate Class I (#30-O), Class II (#30-MO) preparations, and class II amalgam restorations (#31-MO) were generated respectively under preclinical assessment setting. Calibrated faculty evaluated the preparations and restorations using a standard rubric from preclinical operative class. The same teeth were scanned using Planmeca PlanScan intraoral scanner and graded using the Romexis E4D Compare Software. Each tooth was compared against a corresponding gold standard tooth with tolerance intervals ranging from 100μm to 500μm. These scores were compared to traditional faculty grades using a linear mixed model to estimate the mean differences at 95% confidence interval for each tolerance level. Results: The average Compare Software grade of Class I preparation at 300μm tolerance had the smallest mean difference of 1.64 points on a 100 points scale compared to the average faculty grade. Class II preparation at 400μm tolerance had the smallest mean difference of 0.41 points. Finally, Class II Restoration at 300μm tolerance had the smallest mean difference at 0.20 points. Conclusion: In this study, tolerance levels that best correlated the Compare Software grades with the faculty grades were determined for three operative procedures: class I preparation, class II preparation and class II restoration. This Compare Software can be used as a useful adjunct method for more objective grading. It also can be used by students as a great self-assessment tool.

A Parallel Beam Splitting Based on Gradient Metasurface: Preparation and Fusion of Quantum Entanglement

Gradient metasurface, formed by a set of subwavelength unit cells with different phase modulation, is widely used in polarized beam splitting (BS) in the classical and quantum optics. Specifically, its phase gradient allows the path and polarization of multiple output lights to be locked by corresponding inputs.Using this unique path-polarization locked property, we demonstrate that the single metasurface can function as sequentially linked beamsplitters, enabling the parallelization of a series of BS processes. Such a parallel BS metasurface provides a multi-beam interference capability for both classical and quantum light manipulation. Taking this advantage, we first prepare path and polarization hybrid entangled states of two, three, and multi photons from unentangled photon sources. Then, the ability of parallel BS-facilitated entanglement is applied to demonstrate entanglement fusion among entangled photon pairs, which can greatly enlarge the entanglement dimension. The principle of parallel BS through the metasurface opens up a versatile way to manipulate the quantum state at the micro/nano scale, which will have potential applications in on-chip quantum optics and quantum information processing.

Lobe-dominated gamma-ray Emission of Compact Symmetric Objects

The $γ$-ray emitting compact symmetric objects (CSOs) PKS 1718--649, NGC 3894, and TXS 0128+554 are lobe-dominated in the radio emission. In order to investigate their $γ$-ray radiation properties, we analyze the $\sim$14-yr Fermi/LAT observation data of the three CSOs. They all show the low luminosity ($10^{41}-10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$) and no significant variability in the $γ$-ray band. Their $γ$-ray average spectra can be well fitted by a power-law function. These properties of $γ$-rays are clearly different from the $γ$-ray emitting CSOs CTD 135 and PKS 1413+135, for which the $γ$-rays are produced by a restarted aligned jet. In the $L_γ-Γ_γ$ plane, the three CSOs are also located at the region occupied by radio galaxies (RGs) while CTD 135 and PKS 1413+135 display the similar feature to blazars. Together with the similar radio emission property to $γ$-ray emitting RGs Cen A and Fornax A, we speculate that the $γ$-rays of the three CSOs stem from their extended mini-lobes. The broadband spectral energy distributions of the three CSOs can be well explained by the two-zone leptonic model, where their $γ$-rays are produced by the inverse Compton process of the relativistic electrons in extended region. By extrapolating the observed Fermi/LAT spectra to the very high energy band, we find that TXS 0128+554 among the three CSOs may be detected by the Cherenkov Telescope Array in future.

Theoretical and experimental study of attenuation in cancellous bone

Photoacoustic (PA) technology can provide information on both the physical structure and chemical composition of bone, showing great potential in bone assessment. However, due to the complex composition and porous structure of cancellous bone, the PA signals generated and propagated in cancellous bone are complex and difficult to be directly used in cancellous bone analysis. In this paper, a photoacoustic differential attenuation spectrum (PA-DAS) method is proposed. By eliminating the PA spectrum of the optical absorption sources, the propagation attenuation characteristics of cancellous bone are studied theoretically and experimentally. An analytical solution for the propagation attenuation of broadband ultrasound waves in cancellous bone is given by applying high-frequency and viscous corrections to Biot's theory. An experimental system of PA-DAS with an eccentric excitation differential detection system is established to obtain the PA-DAS of cancellous bone and its acoustic propagation characteristic on the rabbit osteoporosis model. The PA-DAS quantization parameter slope is further extracted to quantify the attenuation of high and low frequency components. The results show that the PA-DAS can distinguish osteoporotic bone from normal bone, enabling quantitative assessment of bone mineral density and the diagnosis of osteoporosis.

Quantum PT-Phase Diagram in a Non-Hermitian Photonic Structure

Photonic structures have an inherent advantage to realize PT-phase transition through modulating the refractive index or gain-loss. However, quantum PT properties of these photonic systems have not been comprehensively studied yet. Here, in a bi-photonic structure with loss and gain simultaneously existing, we analytically obtained the quantum PT-phase diagram under the steady state condition. To characterize the PT-symmetry or -broken phase, we define an Hermitian exchange operator expressing the exchange between quadrature variables of two modes. If inputting several-photon Fock states into a PT-broken bi-waveguide splitting system, most photons will concentrate in the dominant waveguide with some state distributions. Quantum PT-phase diagram paves the way to the quantum state engineering, quantum interferences, and logic operations in non-Hermitian photonic systems.

Directional emission of nanoscale chiral sources modified by gap plasmons

Efficient manipulation of the emission direction of a chiral nanoscale light source is significant for information transmission and on-chip information processing. Here, we propose a scheme to control the directionality of nanoscale chiral light sources based on gap plasmons. The gap plasmon mode formed by a gold nanorod and a silver nanowire realizes the highly directional emission of chiral light sources. Based on the optical spin-locked light propagation, the hybrid structure enables the directional coupling of chiral emission to achieve a contrast ratio of 99.5%. The emission direction can be manipulated by tailoring the configuration of the structure, such as the positions, aspect ratios, and orientation of the nanorod. Besides, a great local field enhancement exists for highly enhanced emission rates within the nanogap. This chiral nanoscale light source manipulation scheme provides a way for chiral valleytronics and integrated photonics.

Simultaneous magnetic and electric Purcell enhancement in a hybrid metal-dielectric nanostructure

Hybrid metal-dielectric structures, which combine the advantages of both metal and dielectric materials, support high-confined but low-loss magnetic and electric resonances under deliberate arrangements. However, their potential for enhancing magnetic emission has not been explored. Here, we study the simultaneous magnetic and electric Purcell enhancement supported by a hybrid structure consisting of a dielectric nanoring and a silver nanorod Such a structure enables low Ohmic loss and highly-confined field under the mode hybridization of magnetic resonances on nanoring and electric resonances on nanorod in the optical communication band. So, the 60-fold magnetic Purcell enhancement and 45-fold electric Purcell enhancement can be achieved simultaneously with $>95\%$ of the radiation transmitted to far field. The position of emitter has a several-ten-nanometer tolerance for sufficiently large Purcell enhancement, which brings convenience to experimental fabrications. Moreover, an array formed by this hybrid nanostructure can further enhance the magnetic Purcell factors. The findings provide a possibility to selectively excite the magnetic and electric emission in integrated photon circuits. It may also facilitate brighter magnetic emission sources and light-emitting metasurfaces in a simpler arrangement.

Gain-gain and gain-lossless PT-symmetry broken from PT-phase diagram

Parity-time (PT) symmetry and broken in micro/nano photonic structures have been investigated extensively as they bring new opportunities to control the flow of light based on non-Hermitian optics. Previous studies have focused on the situations of PT-symmetry broken in loss-loss or gain-loss coupling systems. Here, we theoretically predict the gain-gain and gain-lossless PT-broken from phase diagram, where the boundaries between PT-symmetry and PT-broken can be clearly defined in the full-parameter space including gain, lossless and loss. For specific micro/nano photonic structures, such as coupled waveguides, we give the transmission matrices of each phase space, which can be used for beam splitting. Taking coupled waveguides as an example, we obtain periodic energy exchange in PT-symmetry phase and exponential gain or loss in PT-broken phase, which are consistent with the phase diagram. The scenario giving a full view of PT-symmetry or broken, will not only deepen the understanding of fundamental physics, but also will promote the breakthrough of photonic applications like optical routers and beam splitters.

GeV $γ$-ray Emission of Compact Steep-Spectrum Source 4C +39.23B

Thirteen yr observation data of 4FGL J0824.9+3915 with the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma Ray Space Telescope (Fermi/LAT) are analyzed for revisiting whether 4C +39.23B, a compact steep-spectrum (CSS) source closed to a flat-spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) 4C +39.23A in the $γ$-ray emitting region of 4FGL J0824.9+3915, is a $γ$-ray emitter. We find that the time-integrated $γ$-ray emission of 4FGL J0824.9+3915 is overwhelmingly dominated by 4C +39.23A. It shows significant variability at a 6.7$σ$ confidence level and the average $γ$-ray flux in the 0.1--300 GeV energy band is $(1.60\pm 0.15)\times10^{-8}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ with a power-law photon spectral index of $2.48\pm0.05$. During MJD 57500--58500, 4FGL J0824.9+3915 is in a low state with a steady $γ$-ray flux. Analyzed the Fermi/LAT observation data in this time interval, it is found that the TS values of the $γ$-ray emission from 4C +39.23A and 4C +39.23B are $\sim5$ and $\sim 31$, respectively, indicating that the $γ$-ray emission in this time interval is dominated by the CSS 4C +39.23B. The derived average flux in this time interval for 4C +39.23B is $(9.40\pm4.10)\times 10^{-9}$ ph cm $^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ with $Γ_γ=2.45\pm0.17$. Attributing the spectral energy distribution (SED) of 4C +39.23B to the radiations from its core and extended region, we show that the SED can be represented with a two-zone leptonic model. Its $γ$-ray emission is contributed by the core region. The derived magnetic field strength and Doppler boosting factor of the core are 0.13 G and 6.5. Comparing 4C +39.23B with other $γ$-emitting CSSs and compact symmetric objects (CSOs) in the $Γ_γ-L_γ$ plane, it resembles CSSs.
