An Interpretable and Stable Framework for Sparse Principal Component Analysis

Sparse principal component analysis (SPCA) addresses the poor interpretability and variable redundancy often encountered by principal component analysis (PCA) in high-dimensional data. However, SPCA typically imposes uniform penalties on variables and does not account for differences in variable importance, which may lead to unstable performance in highly noisy or structurally complex settings. We propose SP-SPCA, a method that introduces a single equilibrium parameter into the regularization framework to adaptively adjust variable penalties. This modification of the L2 penalty provides flexible control over the trade-off between sparsity and explained variance while maintaining computational efficiency. Simulation studies show that the proposed method consistently outperforms standard sparse principal component methods in identifying sparse loading patterns, filtering noise variables, and preserving cumulative variance, especially in high-dimensional and noisy settings. Empirical applications to crime and financial market data further demonstrate its practical utility. In real data analyses, the method selects fewer but more relevant variables, thereby reducing model complexity while maintaining explanatory power. Overall, the proposed approach offers a robust and efficient alternative for sparse modeling in complex high-dimensional data, with clear advantages in stability, feature selection, and interpretability

Solvability of BSDEs with possibly unbounded stochastic coefficients on a general weighted $L^p$ space

This paper is devoted to solving a multidimensional backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE for short) with a general random terminal time $τ$ taking values in $[0,+\infty]$. The generator $g$ of such BSDE satisfies a stochastic monotonicity condition in the state variable $y$ and a stochastic Lipschitz condition in the state variable $z$ with possibly unbounded stochastic coefficients $μ_\cdot\in\R$ and $ν_\cdot\in\R_+$ satisfying $\int_0^τ(|μ_t|+ν^2_t) {\rm d}t<+\infty$, along with a very general growth in $y$ that is more easily verified and weaker than existing ones. Let $p>1$ be a given constant and $ρ_\cdot\geq μ_\cdot+\fracθ{2[1\wedge(p-1)]}ν_\cdot^2$ be a given real-valued process for some constant $θ>1$ such that $\int_0^τ|ρ_t|{\rm d}t<+\infty$. In a general weighted $L^p$ space with a weighted factor $e^{\int_0^t ρ_r{\rm d}r}$, we establish an existence and uniqueness result for the adapted solution of previous BSDE when the terminal value satisfies an associated weighted integrability condition, broadening the scope of the process $ρ_\cdot$ in the weighted factor and thereby unifying and strengthening some corresponding existing results obtained in \citet{DarlingandPardoux1997}, \citet{Briand2003}, \citet{LiFan2024SD} and \citet{Li2025}. Some innovative ideas are presented in order to address the general weighted space and the very general growth condition. As applications, we prove the existence of viscosity solutions for parabolic and elliptic PDEs linked with previous BSDEs under some general assumptions on their nonlinear terms, and establish a dual representation of an unbounded dynamic concave utility defined on a general weighted $L^p$ space via the weighted $L^p$ solutions of previous BSDEs.

SPPCSO: Adaptive Penalized Estimation Method for High-Dimensional Correlated Data

With the rise of high-dimensional correlated data, multicollinearity poses a significant challenge to model stability, often leading to unstable estimation and reduced predictive accuracy. This work proposes the Single-Parametric Principal Component Selection Operator (SPPCSO), an innovative penalized estimation method that integrates single-parametric principal component regression and $L_{1}$ regularization to adaptively adjust the shrinkage factor by incorporating principal component information. This approach achieves a balance between variable selection and coefficient estimation, ensuring model stability and robust estimation even in high-dimensional, high-noise environments. The primary contribution lies in addressing the instability of traditional variable selection methods when applied to high-noise, high-dimensional correlated data. Theoretically, our method exhibits selection consistency and achieves a smaller estimation error bound compared to traditional penalized estimation approaches. Extensive numerical experiments demonstrate that SPPCSO not only delivers stable and reliable estimation in high-noise settings but also accurately distinguishes signal variables from noise variables in group-effect structured data with highly correlated noise variables, effectively eliminating redundant variables and achieving more stable variable selection. Furthermore, SPPCSO successfully identifies disease-associated genes in gene expression data analysis, showcasing strong practical value. The results indicate that SPPCSO serves as an ideal tool for high-dimensional variable selection, offering an efficient and interpretable solution for modeling correlated data.

1D nonlinear backward stochastic differential equations: a unified theory and applications

Since the celebrated paper by El Karoui, Peng and Quenez [Mathematical Finance, 7 (1997), 1--71], backward stochastic differential equations have found wide applications in stochastic control, financial technology and machine learning. In this paper, we present a comprehensive theory on the existence and uniqueness of adapted solutions to a one-dimensional nonlinear backward stochastic differential equation (1D BSDE for short), and assume that the generator $g$ has a unilateral linear or super-linear growth in the first unknown variable $y$, and has an at most quadratic growth in the second unknown variable $z$. We develop a unified methodology, featured by the test function method and the a priori estimate technique, to establish several existence theorems and comparison theorems, which immediately yield corresponding existence and uniqueness results. We also overview relevant known results and give some practical applications of our theoretical results. Finally, we list some open problems on the well-posedness of 1D BSDEs.

On 3-manifolds admitting co-orientable taut foliations, but none with vanishing Euler class

In this article, we construct infinitely many (small Seifert fibred, hyperbolic and toroidal) rational homology $3$-spheres that admit co-orientable taut foliations, but none with vanishing Euler class. In the context of the $L$-space conjecture, these examples provide rational homology $3$-spheres that admit co-orientable taut foliations (and hence are not $L$-spaces) and have left-orderable fundamental groups, yet none of the left orders arise directly from the universal circle actions associated to co-orientable taut foliations. The hyperbolic and non-Seifert toroidal examples are obtained from Dehn surgeries on knots in the $3$-sphere and use Heegaard Floer homology to obstruct the existence of a co-orientable foliation with vanishing Euler class. For the Seifert fibred case, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the Euler class of the normal bundle of the Seifert fibration to vanish. Moreover, when the base orbifold is hyperbolic, we also provide a second proof of this condition from the viewpoint of discrete faithful representations of Fuchsian groups.

Relationship between maximum principle and dynamic programming principle for recursive optimal control problem of stochastic evolution equations

This paper aims to study the relationship between the maximum principle and the dynamic programming principle for recursive optimal control problem of stochastic evolution equations, where the control domain is not necessarily convex and the value function may be nonsmooth. By making use of the notion of conditionally expected operator-valued backward stochastic integral equations, we establish a connection between the first and second-order adjoint processes in MP and the general derivatives of the value function. Under certain additional assumptions, the value function is shown to be $C^{1,1}$-regular. Furthermore, we discuss the smooth case and present several applications of our results.

Training Together, Diagnosing Better: Federated Learning for Collagen VI-Related Dystrophies

The application of Machine Learning (ML) to the diagnosis of rare diseases, such as collagen VI-related dystrophies (COL6-RD), is fundamentally limited by the scarcity and fragmentation of available data. Attempts to expand sampling across hospitals, institutions, or countries with differing regulations face severe privacy, regulatory, and logistical obstacles that are often difficult to overcome. The Federated Learning (FL) provides a promising solution by enabling collaborative model training across decentralized datasets while keeping patient data local and private. Here, we report a novel global FL initiative using the Sherpa.ai FL platform, which leverages FL across distributed datasets in two international organizations for the diagnosis of COL6-RD, using collagen VI immunofluorescence microscopy images from patient-derived fibroblast cultures. Our solution resulted in an ML model capable of classifying collagen VI patient images into the three primary pathogenic mechanism groups associated with COL6-RD: exon skipping, glycine substitution, and pseudoexon insertion. This new approach achieved an F1-score of 0.82, outperforming single-organization models (0.57-0.75). These results demonstrate that FL substantially improves diagnostic utility and generalizability compared to isolated institutional models. Beyond enabling more accurate diagnosis, we anticipate that this approach will support the interpretation of variants of uncertain significance and guide the prioritization of sequencing strategies to identify novel pathogenic variants.

On-Demand Microwave Single-Photon Source Based on Tantalum Thin Film

Single-photon sources are crucial for quantum information technologies. Here, we demonstrate a microwave single-photon source fabricated using a tantalum-based thin film, whose favorable material properties enable high-quality and stable photon emission. The antibunching behavior of the emitted radiation is revealed by second-order correlation measurements. Furthermore, traveling-wave parametric amplifiers are used as the pre-amplifier in the detection chains, we substantially improve the signal-to-noise ratio and thereby greatly reduce the acquisition time required for second-order correlation measurements. These results demonstrate the viability of tantalum-based superconducting devices as reliable platforms for microwave quantum photonics.

Anomalous Point-Gap Interactions Unveil the Mirage Bath

Non-Hermitian topology has revolutionized our understanding of energy gaps and band topology, unveiling phases that do not exist within the Hermitian framework. Nonetheless, its fundamental implications for quantum interactions in open quantum systems remain largely unexplored. Here, we uncover a novel interaction mechanism by examining a quantum-optical system where quantum emitters interact through the photonic band-gap of a dissipative photon bath with periodic boundaries, described by a nonreciprocal Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Although localized photons within the gap should inhibit interactions between emitters in certain regimes, we find that long-range interactions emerge, defying conventional expectations. These anomalous interactions are mediated by a ``mirage bath" - a virtual bath that unfolds onto a distinct layer of the Riemann surface. This mirage bath generates emitter dynamics identical to those produced by the physical bath but possesses distinct band topology. Crucially, the interactions inherit the topology of the mirage bath, not the physical one. This bath duality is inherent to any dissipative bath with spectral topology, leading to a fundamentally new mechanism for long-range interactions and correlations across the multi-layered Riemann surface, unseen in traditional settings. Our findings open new avenues in quantum optics, many-body quantum simulations, and offer fresh insights into non-Hermitian topology.

Efficient Convex Optimization for Bosonic State Tomography

Quantum states encoded in electromagnetic fields, also known as bosonic states, have been widely applied in quantum sensing, quantum communication, and quantum error correction. Accurate characterization is therefore essential yet difficult when states cannot be reconstructed with sparse Pauli measurements. Tomography must work with dense measurement bases, high-dimensional Hilbert spaces, and often sample-based data. However, existing convex optimization-based techniques are not efficient enough and scale poorly when extended to large and multi-mode systems. In this work, we explore convex optimization as an effective framework to address problems in bosonic state tomography, introducing three techniques to enhance efficiency and scalability: efficient displacement operator computation, Hilbert space truncation, and stochastic convex optimization, which mitigate common limitations of existing approaches. Then we propose a sample-based, convex maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE) method specifically designed for flying mode tomography. Numerical simulations of flying four-mode and nine-mode problems demonstrate the accuracy and practicality of our methods. This method provides practical tools for reliable bosonic mode quantum state reconstruction in high-dimensional and multi-mode systems.

Mean-field backward stochastic Volterra integral equations: well-posedness and related particle system

This paper studies the mean-field backward stochastic Volterra integral equations (mean-field BSVIEs) and associated particle systems. We establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions to mean-field BSVIEs when the generator $g$ is of linear growth or quadratic growth with respect to $Z$, respectively. Moreover, the propagation of chaos is analyzed for the corresponding particle systems under two conditions. When $g$ is of linear growth in $Z$, the convergence rate is proven to be of order $\mathscr{Q}(N)$. When $g$ is of quadratic growth in $Z$ and is independent of the law of $Z$, we not only establish the convergence of the particle systems but also derive a convergence rate of order $\mathscr{O}(N^{-\frac{1}{2λ}})$, where $λ>1$.

Uniqueness of adapted solutions to scalar BSDEs with Peano-type generators

A Backward Stochastic Differential Equation (BSDE) with a Peano-type generator, is known to have infinitely many solutions when the terminal value is vanishing, and is shown to have possibly multiple solutions even when the terminal value is not vanishing but nonnegative. In this paper, we study the uniqueness of adapted solutions of such a BSDE when the terminal value is almost surely positive. Two methods are developed. The first one is to connect the BSDE to an optimal stochastic control problem: under suitable integrability of the terminal values, with a verification argument, we prove that the first component of the adapted solution pair is the value process for the optimal stochastic control problem. The second one appeals to a change of variables, and is more inclined to analysis: by a change of variables, the original BSDE is reduced to a convex quadratic BSDE, and then using the $θ$-difference method, we give a sharp result in some special case, which includes the BSDE governing the well-known Kreps-Porteus utility.

Med-2E3: A 2D-Enhanced 3D Medical Multimodal Large Language Model

3D medical image analysis is essential for modern healthcare, yet traditional task-specific models are inadequate due to limited generalizability across diverse clinical scenarios. Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) offer a promising solution to these challenges. However, existing MLLMs have limitations in fully leveraging the rich, hierarchical information embedded in 3D medical images. Inspired by clinical practice, where radiologists focus on both 3D spatial structure and 2D planar content, we propose Med-2E3, a 3D medical MLLM that integrates a dual 3D-2D encoder architecture. To aggregate 2D features effectively, we design a Text-Guided Inter-Slice (TG-IS) scoring module, which scores the attention of each 2D slice based on slice contents and task instructions. To the best of our knowledge, Med-2E3 is the first MLLM to integrate both 3D and 2D features for 3D medical image analysis. Experiments on large-scale, open-source 3D medical multimodal datasets demonstrate that TG-IS exhibits task-specific attention distribution and significantly outperforms current state-of-the-art models. The code is available at: https://github.com/MSIIP/Med-2E3

Slope detection, taut foliations, and the relative L-space conjecture

The $L$-space conjecture asserts the equivalence, for prime $3$-manifolds, of three properties: not being an $L$-space ($NLS$), having a left-orderable fundamental group ($LO$), and admitting a co-orientable taut foliation ($CTF$). In this paper we introduce a relative version of the $L$-space conjecture for knot manifolds $M$, stated in terms of sets of slopes on $\partial M$ characterised (i.e. detected) by Heegaard Floer homology, left-orders, and foliations, respectively. We give a unified characterisation of slope detection, and conjecture that the relative $L$-space conjecture is equivalent to the $L$-space conjecture for toroidal manifolds. We confirm this equivalence for the properties $CTF$ and $NLS$. Much of our technical work lies in proving that the set of $CTF$-detected slopes on $\partial M$ is a finite union of possibly degenerate closed intervals with rational endpoints; in particular, it is closed in the space of slopes. This involves generalizing results of Tao Li on laminar branched surfaces to the setting of manifolds with boundary. Within the slopes detected by co-orientable taut foliations, we identify a special subset, which we call exceptional $CTF$-detected slopes. This set includes $CTF$-detected slopes whose associated Dehn fillings don't admit co-orientable taut foliations. We believe this exceptional set is important to understand. In this article, we show that the set of exceptional slopes is finite. However, many questions remain open. Finally, in the last section of the article we provide a structured synthesis of previous work in the area.

Optimal control of stochastic homogenous systems

This paper investigates a new class of homogeneous stochastic control problems with cone control constraints, extending the classical homogeneous stochastic linear-quadratic (LQ) framework to encompass nonlinear system dynamics and non-quadratic cost functionals. We demonstrate that, analogous to the LQ case, the optimal controls and value functions for these generalized problems are intimately connected to a novel class of highly nonlinear backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs). We establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions to these BSDEs under three distinct sets of conditions, employing techniques such as truncation functions and logarithmic transformations. Furthermore, we derive explicit feedback representations for the optimal controls and value functions in terms of the solutions to these BSDEs, supported by rigorous verification arguments. Our general solvability conditions allow us to recover many known results for homogeneous LQ problems, including both standard and singular cases, as special instances of our framework.

VS-Singer: Vision-Guided Stereo Singing Voice Synthesis with Consistency Schrödinger Bridge

To explore the potential advantages of utilizing spatial cues from images for generating stereo singing voices with room reverberation, we introduce VS-Singer, a vision-guided model designed to produce stereo singing voices with room reverberation from scene images. VS-Singer comprises three modules: firstly, a modal interaction network integrates spatial features into text encoding to create a linguistic representation enriched with spatial information. Secondly, the decoder employs a consistency Schrödinger bridge to facilitate one-step sample generation. Moreover, we utilize the SFE module to improve the consistency of audio-visual matching. To our knowledge, this study is the first to combine stereo singing voice synthesis with visual acoustic matching within a unified framework. Experimental results demonstrate that VS-Singer can effectively generate stereo singing voices that align with the scene perspective in a single step.

Multi-dimensional anticipated backward stochastic differential equations with quadratic growth

This paper is devoted to the general solvability of anticipated backward stochastic differential equations with quadratic growth by relaxing the assumptions made by Hu, Li, and Wen \cite[Journal of Differential Equations, 270 (2021), 1298--1311]{hu2021anticipated} from the one-dimensional case with bounded terminal values to the multi-dimensional situation with bounded/unbounded terminal values. Three new results regarding the existence and uniqueness of local and global solutions are established. More precisely, for the local solution with bounded terminal values, the generator $f(t, Y_t, Z_t, Y_{t+δ_t},Z_{t+ζ_t})$ is of general growth with respect to $Y_t$ and $Y_{t+δ_{t}}$. For the global solution with bounded terminal values, the generator $f(t, Y_t, Z_t, Y_{t+δ_t},Z_{t+ζ_t})$ is of skew sub-quadratic but also ``strictly and diagonally" quadratic growth in $Z_t$. For the global solution with unbounded terminal values, the generator $f(t, Y_t, Z_t, Y_{t+δ_t})$ is of diagonal quadratic growth in $Z_t$ in the first case; and in the second case, the generator $f(t, Z_t)$+$E[g(t, Y_t,Z_t, Y_{t+δ_t},Z_{t+ζ_t})]$ is of diagonal quadratic growth in $Z_t$ and linear growth in $Z_{t+ζ_t}$.

Ultrasound Report Generation with Multimodal Large Language Models for Standardized Texts

Ultrasound (US) report generation is a challenging task due to the variability of US images, operator dependence, and the need for standardized text. Unlike X-ray and CT, US imaging lacks consistent datasets, making automation difficult. In this study, we propose a unified framework for multi-organ and multilingual US report generation, integrating fragment-based multilingual training and leveraging the standardized nature of US reports. By aligning modular text fragments with diverse imaging data and curating a bilingual English-Chinese dataset, the method achieves consistent and clinically accurate text generation across organ sites and languages. Fine-tuning with selective unfreezing of the vision transformer (ViT) further improves text-image alignment. Compared to the previous state-of-the-art KMVE method, our approach achieves relative gains of about 2\% in BLEU scores, approximately 3\% in ROUGE-L, and about 15\% in CIDEr, while significantly reducing errors such as missing or incorrect content. By unifying multi-organ and multi-language report generation into a single, scalable framework, this work demonstrates strong potential for real-world clinical workflows.
