Twin identification over viewpoint change: A deep convolutional neural network surpasses humans

Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) have achieved human-level accuracy in face identification (Phillips et al., 2018), though it is unclear how accurately they discriminate highly-similar faces. Here, humans and a DCNN performed a challenging face-identity matching task that included identical twins. Participants (N=87) viewed pairs of face images of three types: same-identity, general imposter pairs (different identities from similar demographic groups), and twin imposter pairs (identical twin siblings). The task was to determine whether the pairs showed the same person or different people. Identity comparisons were tested in three viewpoint-disparity conditions: frontal to frontal, frontal to 45-degree profile, and frontal to 90-degree profile. Accuracy for discriminating matched-identity pairs from twin-imposters and general imposters was assessed in each viewpoint-disparity condition. Humans were more accurate for general-imposter pairs than twin-imposter pairs, and accuracy declined with increased viewpoint disparity between the images in a pair. A DCNN trained for face identification (Ranjan et al., 2018) was tested on the same image pairs presented to humans. Machine performance mirrored the pattern of human accuracy, but with performance at or above all humans in all but one condition. Human and machine similarity scores were compared across all image-pair types. This item-level analysis showed that human and machine similarity ratings correlated significantly in six of nine image-pair types [range r=0.38 to r=0.63], suggesting general accord between the perception of face similarity by humans and the DCNN. These findings also contribute to our understanding of DCNN performance for discriminating high-resemblance faces, demonstrate that the DCNN performs at a level at or above humans, and suggest a degree of parity between the features used by humans and the DCNN.

A Graph Isomorphism Network with Weighted Multiple Aggregators for Speech Emotion Recognition

Speech emotion recognition (SER) is an essential part of human-computer interaction. In this paper, we propose an SER network based on a Graph Isomorphism Network with Weighted Multiple Aggregators (WMA-GIN), which can effectively handle the problem of information confusion when neighbour nodes' features are aggregated together in GIN structure. Moreover, a Full-Adjacent (FA) layer is adopted for alleviating the over-squashing problem, which is existed in all Graph Neural Network (GNN) structures, including GIN. Furthermore, a multi-phase attention mechanism and multi-loss training strategy are employed to avoid missing the useful emotional information in the stacked WMA-GIN layers. We evaluated the performance of our proposed WMA-GIN on the popular IEMOCAP dataset. The experimental results show that WMA-GIN outperforms other GNN-based methods and is comparable to some advanced non-graph-based methods by achieving 72.48% of weighted accuracy (WA) and 67.72% of unweighted accuracy (UA).

A Multi-grained based Attention Network for Semi-supervised Sound Event Detection

Sound event detection (SED) is an interesting but challenging task due to the scarcity of data and diverse sound events in real life. This paper presents a multi-grained based attention network (MGA-Net) for semi-supervised sound event detection. To obtain the feature representations related to sound events, a residual hybrid convolution (RH-Conv) block is designed to boost the vanilla convolution's ability to extract the time-frequency features. Moreover, a multi-grained attention (MGA) module is designed to learn temporal resolution features from coarse-level to fine-level. With the MGA module, the network could capture the characteristics of target events with short- or long-duration, resulting in more accurately determining the onset and offset of sound events. Furthermore, to effectively boost the performance of the Mean Teacher (MT) method, a spatial shift (SS) module as a data perturbation mechanism is introduced to increase the diversity of data. Experimental results show that the MGA-Net outperforms the published state-of-the-art competitors, achieving 53.27% and 56.96% event-based macro F1 (EB-F1) score, 0.709 and 0.739 polyphonic sound detection score (PSDS) on the validation and public set respectively.

A Self-Guided Framework for Radiology Report Generation

Automatic radiology report generation is essential to computer-aided diagnosis. Through the success of image captioning, medical report generation has been achievable. However, the lack of annotated disease labels is still the bottleneck of this area. In addition, the image-text data bias problem and complex sentences make it more difficult to generate accurate reports. To address these gaps, we pre-sent a self-guided framework (SGF), a suite of unsupervised and supervised deep learning methods to mimic the process of human learning and writing. In detail, our framework obtains the domain knowledge from medical reports with-out extra disease labels and guides itself to extract fined-grain visual features as-sociated with the text. Moreover, SGF successfully improves the accuracy and length of medical report generation by incorporating a similarity comparison mechanism that imitates the process of human self-improvement through compar-ative practice. Extensive experiments demonstrate the utility of our SGF in the majority of cases, showing its superior performance over state-of-the-art meth-ods. Our results highlight the capacity of the proposed framework to distinguish fined-grained visual details between words and verify its advantage in generating medical reports.

Backward doubly stochastic differential equations and SPDEs with quadratic growth

In this paper, we initiate the study of backward doubly stochastic differential equations (BDSDEs, for short) with quadratic growth. The existence, comparison, and stability results for one-dimensional BDSDEs are proved when the generator $f(t,Y,Z)$ grows in $Z$ quadratically and the terminal value is bounded, by introducing some new ideas. Moreover, in this framework, we use BDSDEs to give a probabilistic representation for the solutions of semilinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs, for short) in Sobolev spaces, and use it to prove the existence and uniqueness of such SPDEs, thus extending the nonlinear Feynman-Kac formula.

Observation of interaction-induced mobility edge in a disordered atomic wire

Mobility edge, a critical energy separating localized and extended excitations, is a key concept for understanding quantum localization. Aubry-André (AA) model, a paradigm for exploring quantum localization, does not naturally allow mobility edges due to self-duality. Using the momentum-state lattice of quantum gas of Cs atoms to synthesize a nonlinear AA model, we provide experimental evidence for mobility edge induced by interactions. By identifying the extended-to-localized transition of different energy eigenstates, we construct a mobility-edge phase diagram. The location of mobility edge in the low- or high-energy region is tunable via repulsive or attractive interactions. Our observation is in good agreement with the theory, and supports an interpretation of such interaction-induced mobility edge via a generalized AA model. Our work also offers new possibilities to engineer quantum transport and phase transitions in disordered systems.

Quadratic Mean-Field Reflected BSDEs

In this paper, we analyze mean-field reflected backward stochastic differential equations when the driver has quadratic growth in the second unknown $z$. Using linearization technique and BMO martingale theory, we first apply fixed point argument to establish uniqueness and existence result for the case with bounded terminal condition and obstacle. Then, with the help of a $θ$-method, we develop a successive approximation procedure to remove the boundedness condition on the terminal condition and obstacle when the generator is concave (or convex) with respect to the 2nd unknown $z$

Khovanov homology and the cinquefoil

We prove that Khovanov homology with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ detects the $(2,5)$ torus knot. Our proof makes use of a wide range of deep tools in Floer homology, Khovanov homology, and Khovanov homotopy. We combine these tools with classical results on the dynamics of surface homeomorphisms to reduce the detection question to a problem about mutually braided unknots, which we then solve with computer assistance.

Euler class of taut foliations and Dehn filling

In this article, we study the Euler class of taut foliations on the Dehn fillings of a $\mathbb{Q}$-homology solid torus. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the Euler class of a foliation transverse to the core of the filling solid torus to vanish. We apply this condition to taut foliations on Dehn fillings of hyperbolic fibered manifolds and obtain many new left-orderable Dehn filling slopes on these manifolds. For instance, we show that when $X$ is the exterior of a pretzel knot $P(-2,3,2r+1)$, $r\geq 3$, $π_1(X(α_n))$ is left-orderable for a sequence of positive slopes $α_n$ with $α_0 =2g-2$ and $α_n\to 2g-1$. Lastly, we prove that given any $\mathbb{Q}$-homology solid torus, the set of slopes for which the corresponding Dehn fillings admit a taut foliation transverse to the core with zero Euler class is nowhere dense in $\mathbb{R}\cup \{\frac{1}{0}\}$.

Stochastic linear-quadratic control with a jump and regime switching on a random horizon

In this paper, we study a stochastic linear-quadratic control problem with random coefficients and regime switching on a horizon $[0,T\wedgeτ]$, where $τ$ is a given random jump time for the underlying state process and $T$ is a constant. We obtain an explicit optimal state feedback control and explicit optimal cost value by solving a system of stochastic Riccati equations (SREs) with jumps on $[0,T\wedgeτ]$. By the decomposition approach stemming from filtration enlargement theory, we express the solution of the system of SREs with jumps in terms of another system of SREs involving only Brownian filtration on the deterministic horizon $[0,T]$. Solving the latter system is the key theoretical contribution of this paper and we establish this for three different cases, one of which seems to be new in the literature. These results are then applied to study a mean-variance hedging problem with random parameters that depend on both Brownian motion and Markov chain. The optimal portfolio and optimal value are presented in closed forms with the aid of a system of linear backward stochastic differential equations with jumps and unbounded coefficients in addition to the SREs with jumps.

Constrained stochastic LQ control on infinite time horizon with regime switching

This paper is concerned with a stochastic linear-quadratic (LQ) optimal control problem on infinite time horizon, with regime switching, random coefficients, and cone control constraint. To tackle the problem, two new extended stochastic Riccati equations (ESREs) on infinite time horizon are introduced. The existence of the nonnegative solutions, in both standard and singular cases, is proved through a sequence of ESREs on finite time horizon. Based on this result and some approximation techniques, we obtain the optimal state feedback control and optimal value for the stochastic LQ problem explicitly. Finally, we apply these results to solve a lifetime portfolio selection problem of tracking a given wealth level with regime switching and portfolio constraint.

Constrained stochastic LQ control with regime switching and application to portfolio selection

This paper is concerned with a stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problem with regime switching, random coefficients, and cone control constraint. The randomness of the coefficients comes from two aspects: the Brownian motion and the Markov chain. Using Itô's lemma for Markov chain, we obtain the optimal state feedback control and optimal cost value explicitly via two new systems of extended stochastic Riccati equations (ESREs). We prove the existence and uniqueness of the two ESREs using tools including multidimensional comparison theorem, truncation function technique, log transformation and the John-Nirenberg inequality. These results are then applied to study mean-variance portfolio selection problems with and without short-selling prohibition with random parameters depending on both the Brownian motion and the Markov chain. Finally, the efficient portfolios and efficient frontiers are presented in closed forms.

Existence, uniqueness and comparison theorem on unbounded solutions of scalar super-linear BSDEs

This paper is devoted to the existence, uniqueness and comparison theorem on unbounded solutions of a scalar backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) whose generator grows (with respect to both unknown variables $y$ and $z$) in a super-linear way like $|y||\ln |y||^{(λ+1/2)\wedge 1}+|z||\ln |z||^λ$ for some $λ\geq 0$. For the following four different ranges of the growth power parameter $λ$: $λ=0$, $λ\in (0,1/2)$, $λ=1/2$ and $λ>1/2$, we give reasonably weakest possible different integrability conditions of the terminal value for the existence of an unbounded solution to the BSDE. In the first two cases, they are stronger than the $L\ln L$-integrability and weaker than any $L^p$-integrability with $p>1$; in the third case, the integrability condition is just some $L^p$-integrability for $p>1$; and in the last case, the integrability condition is stronger than any $L^p$-integrability with $p>1$ and weaker than any $\exp(L^ε)$-integrability with $ε\in (0,1)$. We also establish the comparison theorem, which yields naturally the uniqueness, when either generator of both BSDEs is convex (concave) in both unknown variables $(y,z)$, or satisfies a one-sided Osgood condition in the first unknown variable $y$ and a uniform continuity condition in the second unknown variable $z$.

A unified approach to mean-field team: homogeneity, heterogeneity and quasi-exchangeability

This paper aims to systematically solve stochastic team optimization of large-scale system, in a rather general framework. Concretely, the underlying large-scale system involves considerable weakly-coupled cooperative agents for which the individual admissible controls: (\textbf{i}) enter the diffusion terms, (\textbf{ii}) are constrained in some closed-convex subsets, and (\textbf{iii}) subject to a general \emph{partial decentralized information} structure. A more important but serious feature: (\textbf{iv}) all agents are heterogenous with \emph{continuum} instead \emph{finite} diversity. Combination of (\textbf{i})-(\textbf{iv}) yields a quite general modeling of stochastic team-optimization, but on the other hand, also fails current existing techniques of team analysis. In particular, classical team consistency with continuum heterogeneity collapses because of (\textbf{i}). As the resolution, a novel \emph{unified approach} is proposed under which the intractable \emph{continuum} \emph{heterogeneity} can be converted to a more tractable \emph{homogeneity}. As a trade-off, the underlying randomness is augmented, and all agents become (quasi) weakly-exchangeable. Such approach essentially involves a subtle balance between homogeneity v.s. heterogeneity, and left (prior-sampling)- v.s. right (posterior-sampling) information filtration. Subsequently, the consistency condition (CC) system takes a new type of forward-backward stochastic system with \emph{double-projections} (due to (\textbf{ii}), (\textbf{iii})), along with \emph{spatial mean} on continuum heterogenous index (due to (\textbf{iv})). Such system is new in team literature and its well-posedness is also challenging. We address this issue under mild conditions. Related asymptotic optimality is also established.

Backward Stackelberg Differential Game with Constraints: a Mixed Terminal-Perturbation and Linear-Quadratic Approach

We discuss an open-loop backward Stackelberg differential game involving single leader and single follower. Unlike most Stackelberg game literature, the state to be controlled is characterized by a backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) for which the terminal- instead initial-condition is specified as a priori; the decisions of leader consist of a static terminal-perturbation and a dynamic linear-quadratic control. In addition, the terminal control is subject to (convex-closed) pointwise and (affine) expectation constraints. Both constraints are arising from real applications such as mathematical finance. For information pattern: the leader announces both terminal and open-loop dynamic decisions at the initial time while takes account the best response of follower. Then, two interrelated optimization problems are sequentially solved by the follower (a backward linear-quadratic (BLQ) problem) and the leader (a mixed terminal-perturbation and backward-forward LQ (BFLQ) problem). Our open-loop Stackelberg equilibrium is represented by some coupled backward-forward stochastic differential equations (BFSDEs) with mixed initial-terminal conditions. Our BFSDEs also involve nonlinear projection operator (due to pointwise constraint) combining with a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) system (due to expectation constraint) via Lagrange multiplier. The global solvability of such BFSDEs is also discussed in some nontrivial cases. Our results are applied to one financial example.

Quadratic $G$-BSDEs with convex generators and unbounded terminal conditions

In this paper, we first study one-dimensional quadratic backward stochastic differential equations driven by $G$-Brownian motions ($G$-BSDEs) with unbounded terminal values. With the help of a $θ$-method of Briand and Hu [4] and nonlinear stochastic analysis techniques, we propose an approximation procedure to prove existence and uniqueness result when the generator is convex (or concave) and terminal value is of exponential moments of arbitrary order. Finally, we also establish the well-posedness of multi-dimensional G-BSDEs with diagonally quadratic generators.

Dynamic sensitivity of quantum Rabi model with quantum criticality

We study the dynamic sensitivity of the quantum Rabi model, which exhibits quantum criticality in the finite-component-system case. This dynamic sensitivity can be detected by introducing an auxiliary two-level atom far-off-resonantly coupled to the cavity field of the quantum Rabi model. We find that when the quantum Rabi model goes through the critical point, the auxiliary atom experiences a sudden decoherence, which can be characterised by a sharp decay of the Loschmidt echo. Our scheme will provide a reliable way to observe quantum phase transition in ultrastrongly coupled quantum systems.

Multi-dimensional backward stochastic differential equations of diagonally quadratic generators: the general result

This paper is devoted to a general solvability of a multi-dimensional backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) of a diagonally quadratic generator $g(t,y,z)$, by relaxing the assumptions of \citet{HuTang2016SPA} on the generator and terminal value. More precisely, the generator $g(t,y,z)$ can have more general growth and continuity in $y$ in the local solution; while in the global solution, the generator $g(t,y,z)$ can have a skew sub-quadratic but in addition "strictly and diagonally" quadratic growth in the second unknown variable $z$, or the terminal value can be unbounded but the generator $g(t,y,z)$ is "diagonally dependent" on the second unknown variable $z$ (i.e., the $i$-th component $g^i$ of the generator $g$ only depends on the $i$-th row $z^i$ of the variable $z$ for each $i=1,\cdots,n$ ). Three new results are established on the local and global solutions when the terminal value is bounded and the generator $g$ is subject to some general assumptions. When the terminal value is unbounded but is of exponential moments of arbitrary order, an existence and uniqueness result is given under the assumptions that the generator $g(t,y,z)$ is Lipschitz continuous in the first unknown variable $y$, and varies with the second unknown variable $z$ in a "diagonal" , "component-wisely convex or concave", and "quadratically growing" way, which seems to be the first general solvability of systems of quadratic BSDEs with unbounded terminal values. This generalizes and strengthens some existing results via some new ideas.
