Words Can Shift: Dynamically Adjusting Word Representations Using Nonverbal Behaviors

Humans convey their intentions through the usage of both verbal and nonverbal behaviors during face-to-face communication. Speaker intentions often vary dynamically depending on different nonverbal contexts, such as vocal patterns and facial expressions. As a result, when modeling human language, it is essential to not only consider the literal meaning of the words but also the nonverbal contexts in which these words appear. To better model human language, we first model expressive nonverbal representations by analyzing the fine-grained visual and acoustic patterns that occur during word segments. In addition, we seek to capture the dynamic nature of nonverbal intents by shifting word representations based on the accompanying nonverbal behaviors. To this end, we propose the Recurrent Attended Variation Embedding Network (RAVEN) that models the fine-grained structure of nonverbal subword sequences and dynamically shifts word representations based on nonverbal cues. Our proposed model achieves competitive performance on two publicly available datasets for multimodal sentiment analysis and emotion recognition. We also visualize the shifted word representations in different nonverbal contexts and summarize common patterns regarding multimodal variations of word representations.

Efficient Low-rank Multimodal Fusion with Modality-Specific Factors

Multimodal research is an emerging field of artificial intelligence, and one of the main research problems in this field is multimodal fusion. The fusion of multimodal data is the process of integrating multiple unimodal representations into one compact multimodal representation. Previous research in this field has exploited the expressiveness of tensors for multimodal representation. However, these methods often suffer from exponential increase in dimensions and in computational complexity introduced by transformation of input into tensor. In this paper, we propose the Low-rank Multimodal Fusion method, which performs multimodal fusion using low-rank tensors to improve efficiency. We evaluate our model on three different tasks: multimodal sentiment analysis, speaker trait analysis, and emotion recognition. Our model achieves competitive results on all these tasks while drastically reducing computational complexity. Additional experiments also show that our model can perform robustly for a wide range of low-rank settings, and is indeed much more efficient in both training and inference compared to other methods that utilize tensor representations.

The first passage time problem for mixed-exponential jump processes with applications in insurance and finance

This paper stidies the first passage times to constant boundaries for mixed-exponential jump diffusion processes. Explicit solutions of the Laplace transforms of the distribution of the first passage times, the joint distribution of the first passage times and undershoot (overshoot) are obtained. As applications, we present explicit expression of the Gerber-Shiu functions for surplus processes with two-sided jumps, present the analytical solutions for popular path-dependent options such as lookback and barrier options in terms of Laplace transforms and give a closed-form expression on the price of the zero-coupon bond under a structural credit risk model with jumps.

Convexity of ruin probability and optimal dividend strategies for a general Levy process

In this paper, we consider the optimal dividends problem for a company whose cash reserves follow a general Levy process with certain positive jumps and arbitrary negative jumps. The objective is to find a policy which maximizes the expected discounted dividends until the time of ruin. Under appropriate conditions, we appeal to very recent results in the theory of potential analysis of subordinators to obtain the convexity properties of probability of ruin. We present conditions under which the optimal dividend strategy, among all admissible ones, takes the form of a barrier strategy.

Alternative approach to the optimality of the threshold strategy for spectrally negative Levy processes

Consider the optimal dividend problem for an insurance company whose uncontrolled surplus precess evolves as a spectrally negative Levy process. We assume that dividends are paid to the shareholders according to admissible strategies whose dividend rate is bounded by a constant. The objective is to find a dividend policy so as to maximize the expected discounted value of dividends which are paid to the shareholders until the company is ruined. Kyprianou, Loeffen and Perez [28] have shown that a refraction strategy (also called threshold strategy) forms an optimal strategy under the condition that the Levy measure has a completely monotone density. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach to this optimal problem.

A Bernstein theorem for complete spacelike constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in Minkowski space

We obtain a gradient estimate for the Gauss maps from complete spacelike constant mean curvature hypersurfaces in Minkowski space into the hyperbolic space. As applications, we prove a Bernstein theorem which says that if the image of the Gauss map is bounded from one side, then the spacelike constant mean curvature hypersurface must be linear. This result extends the previous theorems obtained by B. Palmer and Y.L. Xin where they assume that the image of the Gauss map is bounded. We also proved a Bernstein theorem for spacelike complete surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector in four-dimensional spaces.

The structure of stable minimal hypersurfaces in R^n

We provide a new topological obstruction for complete stable minimal hypersurfaces in R^n. For $n\geq 4$, we prove that any complete orientable stable hypersurfaces in R^n has only one end. This follows from a more general analytic theorem we prove in the paper.

Ricci curvature, minimal surfaces and sphere theorems

Using an analogue of Myers' theorem for minimal surfaces and three dimensional topology, we prove the diameter sphere theorem for Ricci curvature in dimension three and a corresponding eigenvalue pinching theorem. This settles these two open problems for closed 3 manifolds with positive Ricci curvature since they are both false in dimensions greater than three.

On the geometry and topology of manifolds of positive bi-Ricci curvature

We introduce some new curvature quantities such as conformal Ricci curvature and bi-Ricci curvature and extend the classical Myers theorem under these new curvature conditions. Moreover, we are able to obtain the Myers type theorem for minimal submanifolds in ambient manifolds with positive bi-Ricci curvature. Some topological applications are discussed. We also give examples of manifolds of positive bi-Ricci curvature and prove that the connect sum of manifolds of positive bi-Ricci curvature admits metrics of positive bi-Ricci curvature.
