Growth of Outward Propagating Fast-Magnetosonic/Whistler Waves in the Inner Heliosphere Observed by Parker Solar Probe

The solar wind in the inner heliosphere has been observed by Parker Solar Probe (PSP) to exhibit abundant wave activities. The cyclotron wave modes in the sense of ions or electrons are among the most crucial wave components. However, their origin and evolution in the inner heliosphere close to the Sun remain mysteries. Specifically, it remains unknown whether it is an emitted signal from the solar atmosphere or an eigenmode growing locally in the heliosphere due to plasma instability. To address and resolve this controversy, we must investigate the key quantity of the energy change rate of the wave mode. We develop a new technique to measure the energy change rate of plasma waves, and apply this technique to the wave electromagnetic fields measured by PSP. We provide the wave Poynting flux in the solar wind frame, identify the wave nature to be the outward propagating fast-magnetosonic/whistler wave mode instead of the sunward propagating waves. We provide the first evidence for growth of the fast-magnetosonic/whistler wave mode in the inner heliosphere based on the derived spectra of the real and imaginary parts of the wave frequencies. The energy change rate rises and stays at a positive level in the same wavenumber range as the bumps of the electromagnetic field power spectral densities, clearly manifesting that the observed fast-magnetosonic/whistler waves are locally growing to a large amplitude.

On the Scheduling Policy for Multi-process WNCS under Edge Computing

This paper considers a multi-process and multi-controller wireless networked control system (WNCS). There are $N$ independent linear time-invariant processes in the system plant which represent different kinds of physical processes. By considering the edge computing, the controllers are played by edge server and cloud server. Each process is measured by a sensor, and the status updates is sent to controller to generate the control command. The link delay of cloud server is longer than that of edge server. The processing time of status update depends on the characteristic of servers and processes. By taking into account such conditions, we mainly investigate how to choose the destination of status updates to minimize the system's average Mean Square Error (MSE), edge server or cloud server? To address this issue, we formulate an infinite horizon average cost Markov Decision Process (MDP) problem and obtain the optimal scheduling policy. The monotonicity of the value function in MDP is characterized and then used to show the threshold structure properties of the optimal scheduling policy. To overcome the curse of dimensionality, we propose a low-complexity suboptimal policy by using additive separable structure of value function. Furthermore, the processing preemption mechanism is considered to handle the status updates more flexible, and the consistency property is proved. On this basis, a numerical example is provided. The simulation results illustrate that the controller selection is related to the timeliness of process and show the performance of the suboptimal policy. We also find that the optimal policy will become a static policy in which the destination of status update is fixed when the wireless channel is error free.

Accurate and efficient hydrodynamic analysis of structures with sharp edges by the Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM): 2D studies

Achieving accurate numerical results of hydrodynamic loads based on the potential-flow theory is very challenging for structures with sharp edges, due to the singular behavior of the local-flow velocities. In this paper, we introduce the Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) to solve fluid-structure interaction problems involving sharp edges on structures. Four different FEM solvers, including conventional linear and quadratic FEMs as well as their corresponding XFEM versions with local enrichment by singular basis functions at sharp edges, are implemented and compared. To demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the XFEMs, a thin flat plate in an infinite fluid domain and a forced heaving rectangle at the free surface, both in two dimensions, will be studied. For the flat plate, the mesh convergence studies are carried out for both the velocity potential in the fluid domain and the added mass, and the XFEMs show apparent advantages thanks to their local enhancement at the sharp edges. Three different enrichment strategies are also compared, and suggestions will be made for the practical implementation of the XFEM. For the forced heaving rectangle, the linear and 2nd order mean wave loads are studied. Our results confirm the previous conclusion in the literature that it is not difficult for a conventional numerical model to obtain convergent results for added mass and damping coefficients. However, when the 2nd order mean wave loads requiring the computation of velocity components are calculated via direct pressure integration, it takes a tremendously large number of elements for the conventional FEMs to get convergent results. On the contrary, the numerical results of XFEMs converge rapidly even with very coarse meshes, especially for the quadratic XFEM.

A Semantic Indexing Structure for Image Retrieval

In large-scale image retrieval, many indexing methods have been proposed to narrow down the searching scope of retrieval. The features extracted from images usually are of high dimensions or unfixed sizes due to the existence of key points. Most of existing index structures suffer from the dimension curse, the unfixed feature size and/or the loss of semantic similarity. In this paper a new classification-based indexing structure, called Semantic Indexing Structure (SIS), is proposed, in which we utilize the semantic categories rather than clustering centers to create database partitions, such that the proposed index SIS can be combined with feature extractors without the restriction of dimensions. Besides, it is observed that the size of each semantic partition is positively correlated with the semantic distribution of database. Along this way, we found that when the partition number is normalized to five, the proposed algorithm performed very well in all the tests. Compared with state-of-the-art models, SIS achieves outstanding performance.

Applying explicit symplectic integrator to study chaos of charged particles around magnetized Kerr black hole

In a recent work of Wu, Wang, Sun and Liu, a second-order explicit symplectic integrator was proposed for the integrable Kerr spacetime geometry. It is still suited for simulating the nonintegrable dynamics of charged particles moving around the Kerr black hole embedded in an external magnetic field. Its successful construction is due to the contribution of a time transformation. The algorithm exhibits a good long-term numerical performance in stable Hamiltonian errors and computational efficiency. As its application, the dynamics of order and chaos of charged particles is surveyed. In some circumstances, an increase of the dragging effects of the spacetime seems to weaken the extent of chaos from the global phase-space structure on Poincare sections. However, an increase of the magnetic parameter strengthens the chaotic properties. On the other hand, fast Lyapunov indicators show that there is no universal rule for the dependence of the transition between different dynamical regimes on the black hole spin. The dragging effects of the spacetime do not always weaken the extent of chaos from a local point of view.

Taming Process Variations in CNFET for Efficient Last Level Cache Design

Carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNFET) emerge as a promising alternative to CMOS transistors for the much higher speed and energy efficiency, which makes the technology particularly suitable for building the energy-hungry last level cache (LLC). However, the process variations (PVs) in CNFET caused by the imperfect fabrication lead to large timing variation and the worst-case timing dramatically limits the LLC operation speed. Particularly, we observe that the CNFET-based cache latency distribution is closely related to the LLC layouts. For the two typical LLC layouts that have the CNT growth direction aligned to the cache way direction and cache set direction respectively, we proposed variation-aware set aligned (VASA) cache and variation-aware way aligned (VAWA) cache in combination with corresponding cache optimizations such as data shuffling and page mapping to enable low-latency cache for frequently used data. According to our experiments, the optimized LLC reduces the average access latency by 32% and 45% compared to the baseline designs on the two different CNFET layouts respectively while it improves the overall performance by 6\% and 9\% and reduces the energy consumption by 4% and 8% respectively. In addition, with both the architecture induced latency variation and PV incurred latency variation considered in a unified model, we extended the VAWA and VASA cache design for the CNFET-based NUCA and the proposed NUCA achieves both significant performance improvement and energy saving compared to the straightforward variation-aware NUCA.

Scattering theory for 3d cubic inhomogeneous NLS with inverse square potential

In this paper, we study the scattering theory for the cubic inhomogeneous Schrödinger equations with inverse square potential $iu_t+Δu-\frac{a}{|x|^2}u=λ|x|^{-b}|u|^2u$ with $a>-\frac14$ and $0<b<1$ in dimension three. In the defocusing case (i.e. $λ=1$), we establish the global well-posedness and scattering for any initial data in the energy space $H^1_a(\mathbb R^3)$. While for the focusing case(i.e. $λ=-1$), we obtain the scattering for the initial data below the threshold of the ground state, by making use of the virial/Morawetz argument as in Dodson-Murphy [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc.,145(2017), 4859-4867.] and Campos-Cardoso [arXiv: 2101.08770v1.] that avoids the use of interaction Morawetz estimate.

R2F: A Remote Retraining Framework for AIoT Processors with Computing Errors

AIoT processors fabricated with newer technology nodes suffer rising soft errors due to the shrinking transistor sizes and lower power supply. Soft errors on the AIoT processors particularly the deep learning accelerators (DLAs) with massive computing may cause substantial computing errors. These computing errors are difficult to be captured by the conventional training on general purposed processors like CPUs and GPUs in a server. Applying the offline trained neural network models to the edge accelerators with errors directly may lead to considerable prediction accuracy loss. To address the problem, we propose a remote retraining framework (R2F) for remote AIoT processors with computing errors. It takes the remote AIoT processor with soft errors in the training loop such that the on-site computing errors can be learned with the application data on the server and the retrained models can be resilient to the soft errors. Meanwhile, we propose an optimized partial TMR strategy to enhance the retraining. According to our experiments, R2F enables elastic design trade-offs between the model accuracy and the performance penalty. The top-5 model accuracy can be improved by 1.93%-13.73% with 0%-200% performance penalty at high fault error rate. In addition, we notice that the retraining requires massive data transmission and even dominates the training time, and propose a sparse increment compression approach for the data transmission optimization, which reduces the retraining time by 38%-88% on average with negligible accuracy loss over a straightforward remote retraining.

Energy-Efficient Accelerator Design for Deformable Convolution Networks

Deformable convolution networks (DCNs) proposed to address the image recognition with geometric or photometric variations typically involve deformable convolution that convolves on arbitrary locations of input features. The locations change with different inputs and induce considerable dynamic and irregular memory accesses which cannot be handled by classic neural network accelerators (NNAs). Moreover, bilinear interpolation (BLI) operation that is required to obtain deformed features in DCNs also cannot be deployed on existing NNAs directly. Although a general purposed processor (GPP) seated along with classic NNAs can process the deformable convolution, the processing on GPP can be extremely slow due to the lack of parallel computing capability. To address the problem, we develop a DCN accelerator on existing NNAs to support both the standard convolution and deformable convolution. Specifically, for the dynamic and irregular accesses in DCNs, we have both the input and output features divided into tiles and build a tile dependency table (TDT) to track the irregular tile dependency at runtime. With the TDT, we further develop an on-chip tile scheduler to handle the dynamic and irregular accesses efficiently. In addition, we propose a novel mapping strategy to enable parallel BLI processing on NNAs and apply layer fusion techniques for more energy-efficient DCN processing. According to our experiments, the proposed accelerator achieves orders of magnitude higher performance and energy efficiency compared to the typical computing architectures including ARM, ARM+TPU, and GPU with 6.6\% chip area penalty to a classic NNA.

HAN: An Efficient Hierarchical Self-Attention Network for Skeleton-Based Gesture Recognition

Previous methods for skeleton-based gesture recognition mostly arrange the skeleton sequence into a pseudo picture or spatial-temporal graph and apply deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) or Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) for feature extraction. Although achieving superior results, these methods have inherent limitations in dynamically capturing local features of interactive hand parts, and the computing efficiency still remains a serious issue. In this work, the self-attention mechanism is introduced to alleviate this problem. Considering the hierarchical structure of hand joints, we propose an efficient hierarchical self-attention network (HAN) for skeleton-based gesture recognition, which is based on pure self-attention without any CNN, RNN or GCN operators. Specifically, the joint self-attention module is used to capture spatial features of fingers, the finger self-attention module is designed to aggregate features of the whole hand. In terms of temporal features, the temporal self-attention module is utilized to capture the temporal dynamics of the fingers and the entire hand. Finally, these features are fused by the fusion self-attention module for gesture classification. Experiments show that our method achieves competitive results on three gesture recognition datasets with much lower computational complexity.

Runtime Permission Issues in Android Apps: Taxonomy, Practices, and Ways Forward

Android introduces a new permission model that allows apps to request permissions at runtime rather than at the installation time since 6.0 (Marshmallow, API level 23). While this runtime permission model provides users with greater flexibility in controlling an app's access to sensitive data and system features, it brings new challenges to app development. First, as users may grant or revoke permissions at any time while they are using an app, developers need to ensure that the app properly checks and requests required permissions before invoking any permission-protected APIs. Second, Android's permission mechanism keeps evolving and getting customized by device manufacturers. Developers are expected to comprehensively test their apps on different Android versions and device models to make sure permissions are properly requested in all situations. Unfortunately, these requirements are often impractical for developers. In practice, many Android apps suffer from various runtime permission issues (ARP issues). While existing studies have explored ARP issues, the understanding of such issues is still preliminary. To better characterize ARP issues, we performed an empirical study using 135 Stack Overflow posts that discuss ARP issues and 199 real ARP issues archived in popular open-source Android projects on GitHub. Via analyzing the data, we observed 11 types of ARP issues that commonly occur in Android apps. Furthermore, we conducted a field survey and in-depth interviews among practitioners, to gain insights from industrial practices and learn practitioners' requirements of tools that can help combat ARP issues. We hope that our findings can shed light on future research and provide useful guidance to practitioners.

Construction of explicit symplectic integrators in general relativity. IV. Kerr black holes

In previous papers, explicit symplectic integrators were designed for nonrotating black holes, such as a Schwarzschild black hole. However, they fail to work in the Kerr spacetime because not all variables can be separable, or not all splitting parts have analytical solutions as explicit functions of proper time. To cope with this difficulty, we introduce a time transformation function to the Hamiltonian of Kerr geometry so as to obtain a time-transformed Hamiltonian consisting of five splitting parts, whose analytical solutions are explicit functions of the new coordinate time. The chosen time transformation function can cause time steps to be adaptive, but it is mainly used to implement the desired splitting of the time transformed Hamiltonian. In this manner, new explicit symplectic algorithms are easily available. Unlike Runge Kutta integrators, the newly proposed algorithms exhibit good long term behavior in the conservation of Hamiltonian quantities when appropriate fixed coordinate time steps are considered. They are better than same order implicit and explicit mixed symplectic algorithms and extended phase space explicit symplectic like methods in computational efficiency. The proposed idea on the construction of explicit symplectic integrators is suitable for not only the Kerr metric but also many other relativistic problems, such as a Kerr black hole immersed in a magnetic field, a Kerr Newman black hole with an external magnetic field, axially symmetric core shell systems, and five dimensional black ring metrics.

Epitaxial growth and magnetic characterization of EuSe thin films with various crystalline orientations

We report different growth modes and corresponding magnetic properties of thin EuSe films grown by molecular beam epitaxy on BaF2, Pb1-xEuxSe, GaAs, and Bi2Se3 substrates. We show that EuSe growth predominantly in (001) orientation on GaAs(111) and Bi2Se3, but along (111) crystallographic direction on BaF2 (111) and Pb1-xEuxSe (111). High-resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements reveal an abrupt and highly crystalline interface for both (001) and (111) EuSe films. In agreement with previous studies, ordered magnetic phases include antiferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, and ferromagnetic phases. In contrast to previous studies, we found strong hysteresis for the antiferromagnetic-ferrimagnetic transition. An ability to grow epitaxial films of EuSe on Bi2Se3 and of Bi2Se3 on EuSe enables further investigation of interfacial exchange interactions between various phases of an insulating metamagnetic material and a topological insulator.

Possible Generation Mechanism for Compressional Alfvénic Spikes as Observed by Parker Solar Probe

The solar wind is found by Parker Solar Probe (PSP) to be abundant with Alfvénic velocity spikes and magnetic field kinks. Temperature enhancement is another remarkable feature associated with the Alfvénic spikes. How the prototype of these coincident phenomena is generated intermittently in the source region becomes a hot topic of wide concerns. Here we propose a new model introducing guide-field discontinuity into the interchange magnetic reconnection between open funnels and closed loops with different magnetic helicities. The modified interchange reconnection model not only can accelerate jet flows from the newly opening closed loop but also excite and launch Alfvénic wave pulses along the newly-reconnected and post-reconnected open flux tubes. We find that the modeling results can reproduce the following observational features: (1) Alfvén disturbance is pulsive in time and asymmetric in space; (2) Alfvénic pulse is compressible with temperature enhancement and density variation inside the pulse. We point out that three physical processes co-happening with Alfvén wave propagation can be responsible for the temperature enhancement: (a) convection of heated jet flow plasmas (decrease in density), (b) propagation of compressed slow-mode waves (increase in density), and (c) conduction of heat flux (weak change in density). We also suggest that the radial nonlinear evolution of the Alfvénic pulses should be taken into account to explain the formation of magnetic switchback geometry.

Realization of quasicrystalline quadrupole topological insulators in electrical circuits

Quadrupole topological insulators are a new class of topological insulators with quantized quadrupole moments, which support protected gapless corner states. The experimental demonstrations of quadrupole-topological insulators were reported in a series of artificial materials, such as photonic crystals, acoustic crystals, and electrical circuits. In all these cases, the underlying structures have discrete translational symmetry and thus are periodic. Here we experimentally realize two-dimensional aperiodic-quasicrystalline quadrupole-topological insulators by constructing them in electrical circuits, and observe the spectrally and spatially localized corner modes. In measurement, the modes appear as topological boundary resonances in the corner impedance spectra. Additionally, we demonstrate the robustness of corner modes on the circuit. Our circuit design may be extended to study topological phases in higher-dimensional aperiodic structures.

InverseForm: A Loss Function for Structured Boundary-Aware Segmentation

We present a novel boundary-aware loss term for semantic segmentation using an inverse-transformation network, which efficiently learns the degree of parametric transformations between estimated and target boundaries. This plug-in loss term complements the cross-entropy loss in capturing boundary transformations and allows consistent and significant performance improvement on segmentation backbone models without increasing their size and computational complexity. We analyze the quantitative and qualitative effects of our loss function on three indoor and outdoor segmentation benchmarks, including Cityscapes, NYU-Depth-v2, and PASCAL, integrating it into the training phase of several backbone networks in both single-task and multi-task settings. Our extensive experiments show that the proposed method consistently outperforms baselines, and even sets the new state-of-the-art on two datasets.

Differentiable Joint Pruning and Quantization for Hardware Efficiency

We present a differentiable joint pruning and quantization (DJPQ) scheme. We frame neural network compression as a joint gradient-based optimization problem, trading off between model pruning and quantization automatically for hardware efficiency. DJPQ incorporates variational information bottleneck based structured pruning and mixed-bit precision quantization into a single differentiable loss function. In contrast to previous works which consider pruning and quantization separately, our method enables users to find the optimal trade-off between both in a single training procedure. To utilize the method for more efficient hardware inference, we extend DJPQ to integrate structured pruning with power-of-two bit-restricted quantization. We show that DJPQ significantly reduces the number of Bit-Operations (BOPs) for several networks while maintaining the top-1 accuracy of original floating-point models (e.g., 53x BOPs reduction in ResNet18 on ImageNet, 43x in MobileNetV2). Compared to the conventional two-stage approach, which optimizes pruning and quantization independently, our scheme outperforms in terms of both accuracy and BOPs. Even when considering bit-restricted quantization, DJPQ achieves larger compression ratios and better accuracy than the two-stage approach.

Construction of explicit symplectic integrators in general relativity. III. Reissner-Nordstrom-(anti)-de Sitter black holes

We give a possible splitting method to a Hamiltonian for the description of charged particles moving around the Reissner-Nordstrom-(anti)-de Sitter black hole with an external magnetic field. This Hamiltonian can be separated into six analytical solvable pieces, whose solutions are explicit functions of proper time. In this case, second- and fourth-order explicit symplectic integrators are easily available. They exhibit excellent long-term behavior in maintaining the boundness of Hamiltonian errors regardless of ordered or chaotic orbits if appropriate step-sizes are chosen. Under some circumstances, an increase of positive cosmological constant gives rise to strengthening the extent of chaos from the global phase space; namely, chaos of charged particles occurs easily for the accelerated expansion of the universe. However, an increase of the magnitude of negative cosmological constant does not. The different contributions on chaos are because the cosmological constant acts as a repulsive force in the Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black hole, but an attractive force in the Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black hole.
