Two-photon blockade in a cascaded cavity-quantum-electrodynamics system

We investigate theoretically the model of a cavity-quantum-electrodynamics (QED) system that consists of two two-level atoms coupled to a single-mode cavity in the weak coupling regime, where the system is driven by quantum light. The dynamics behavior of the entire system is tackled in the framework of a cascaded quantum system. We find that the two-photon blockade with two-photon bunching and three-photon antibunching can be obtained even when the strong system dissipation is included. This result shows that our work has potential for realizing entangled photon pairs in a weakly coupled cavity. Moreover, we also analyze the photon statistics of the system in the case of out-of-resonance coupling between cavity and two nonidentical atoms. Here, an unconventional photon blockade effect with the suppression of two-photon correlation and enhancement of three-photon correlation can be realized, which shows many quantum statistical characteristics of cavity QED system in weak coupling.

A Modulation Module for Multi-task Learning with Applications in Image Retrieval

Multi-task learning has been widely adopted in many computer vision tasks to improve overall computation efficiency or boost the performance of individual tasks, under the assumption that those tasks are correlated and complementary to each other. However, the relationships between the tasks are complicated in practice, especially when the number of involved tasks scales up. When two tasks are of weak relevance, they may compete or even distract each other during joint training of shared parameters, and as a consequence undermine the learning of all the tasks. This will raise destructive interference which decreases learning efficiency of shared parameters and lead to low quality loss local optimum w.r.t. shared parameters. To address the this problem, we propose a general modulation module, which can be inserted into any convolutional neural network architecture, to encourage the coupling and feature sharing of relevant tasks while disentangling the learning of irrelevant tasks with minor parameters addition. Equipped with this module, gradient directions from different tasks can be enforced to be consistent for those shared parameters, which benefits multi-task joint training. The module is end-to-end learnable without ad-hoc design for specific tasks, and can naturally handle many tasks at the same time. We apply our approach on two retrieval tasks, face retrieval on the CelebA dataset [1] and product retrieval on the UT-Zappos50K dataset [2, 3], and demonstrate its advantage over other multi-task learning methods in both accuracy and storage efficiency.

Magnon-induced high-order sideband generation

Magnon Kerr nonlinearity plays crucial roles in the study of cavity optomagnonics system and may bring many novel physical phenomena and important applications. In this work, we report the investigation of high- order sideband generation induced by magnon Kerr nonlinearity in a cavity-magnon system, which is critically lacking in this emerging research field. We uncover that the driving field plays a significant role in controlling the generation and amplification of the higher-order sidebands and the sideband spacing can be adjusted by regulating the beat frequency between the pump laser and the probe laser, which is extremely eventful for the spacing modulation of the sideband spectrum. Based on the recent experimental progress, our results deepen our cognition into optomagnonics nonlinearity and may find interesting applications in optical frequency metrology and optical communications.

Fictitious GAN: Training GANs with Historical Models

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are powerful tools for learning generative models. In practice, the training may suffer from lack of convergence. GANs are commonly viewed as a two-player zero-sum game between two neural networks. Here, we leverage this game theoretic view to study the convergence behavior of the training process. Inspired by the fictitious play learning process, a novel training method, referred to as Fictitious GAN, is introduced. Fictitious GAN trains the deep neural networks using a mixture of historical models. Specifically, the discriminator (resp. generator) is updated according to the best-response to the mixture outputs from a sequence of previously trained generators (resp. discriminators). It is shown that Fictitious GAN can effectively resolve some convergence issues that cannot be resolved by the standard training approach. It is proved that asymptotically the average of the generator outputs has the same distribution as the data samples.

Topological spin-Hall edge states of flexural wave in perforated metamaterial plates

This paper investigates the pseudo-spin based edge states for flexural waves in a honeycomb perforated phononic plate, which behaves an elastic analogue of the quantum spin Hall effect. We utilize finite element method to analyse the dispersion for flexural waves based on Mindlin's plate theory. Topological transition takes place around a double Dirac cone at $Γ$ point by adjusting the sizes of perforated holes. We develop an effective Hamiltonian to describe the bands around the two doubly degenerated states and analyse the topological invariants. This further leads us to observe the topologically protected edge states localized at the interface between two lattices. We demonstrate the unidirectional propagation of the edge waves along topological interface, as well as their robustness against defects and sharp bends.

Unconventional phonon blockade via atom-photon-phonon interaction in hybrid optomechanical systems

Phonon nonlinearities play an important role in hybrid quantum networks and on-chip quantum devices. We investigate the phonon statistics of a mechanical oscillator in hybrid systems composed of an atom and one or two standard optomechanical cavities. An efficiently enhanced atom-phonon interaction can be derived via a tripartite atom-photon-phonon interaction, where the atom-photon coupling depends on the mechanical displacement without practically changing a cavity frequency. This novel mechanism of optomechanical interactions, as predicted recently by Cotrufo et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 133603 (2017)], is fundamentally different from standard ones. In the enhanced atom-phonon coupling, the strong phonon nonlinearity at a single-excitation level is obtained in the originally weak-coupling regime, which leads to the appearance of phonon blockade. Moreover, the optimal parameter regimes are presented both for the cases of one- and two- cavities. We compared phonon-number correlation functions of different orders for mechanical steady states generated in the one-cavity hybrid system, revealing the occurrence of phonon-induced tunneling and different types of phonon blockade. Our approach offers an alternative method to generate and control a single phonon in the quantum regime, and has potential applications in single-phonon quantum technologies.

Here we introduce optomechanical arrays as a novel and integrated platform to observe both photonic and phononic Akhmediev breather, with remarkable functionality for readout and control complementing existing research on hydrodynamic and plasma systems. Our results pave a path toward reconfigurable nano- photonic and phononic networks, and may enable a new class of devices in signal processing and on-chip nonlinear dynamical systems.

Detection of light-matter interaction in the weak coupling regime by quantum light

Mollow spectroscopy is a photon statistics spectroscopy, obtained by scanning the quantum light scattered from a source system. Here, we apply this technique to detect the weak light-matter interaction between the cavity and atom (or a mechanical oscillator) when the strong system dissipation is included. We find that the weak interaction can be measured with high accuracy when exciting the target cavity by quantum light scattered from the source in the halfway between the central peak and each side peak. This originally comes from the strong correlation of the injected quantum photons. In principle, our proposal can be applied into the normal cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) system described by JC model and optomechanical system. Furthermore, it is state-of-the-art for experiment even when the interaction strength is downed to a very small value.

Entanglement and quantum superposition induced by a single photon

We predict the occurrence of single-photon-induced entanglement and quantum superposition in a hybrid quantum model, introducing an optomechanical coupling into the Rabi model. Originally, it comes from the photon-dependent quantum property of ground state featured by the proposed hybrid model. It associates with a single-photon-induced quantum phase transition, and is immune to the $A^2$ term of the spin-field interaction. Moreover, the obtained quantum superposition state is actual a squeezed cat state, which can give a significant precision enhancement in quantum metrology. This work offers an approach to manipulate entanglement and quantum superposition with a single photon, which might has potential applications in the engineering of new single-photon quantum devices, and also fundamentally broaden the regime of cavity QED.

Controllable nonlinearity in a dual-coupling optomechanical system under a weak-coupling regime

Strong quantum nonlinearity gives rise to many interesting quantum effects and has wide applications in quantum physics. Herewe investigate the quantum nonlinear effect of an optomechanical system (OMS) consisting of both linear and quadratic coupling. Interestingly, a controllable optomechanical nonlinearity is obtained by applying a driving laser into the cavity. This controllable optomechanical nonlinearity can be enhanced into a strong coupling regime, even if the system is initially in the weak-coupling regime. Moreover, the system dissipation can be suppressed effectively, which allows the appearance of phonon sideband and photon blockade effects in the weak-coupling regime. This work may inspire the exploration of a dual-coupling optomechanical system as well as its applications in modern quantum science.

Single-Photon-Triggered Quantum Phase Transition

We propose a hybrid quantum model combining cavity QED and optomechanics, which allows the occurrence of equilibrium superradiant quantum phase transition (QPT) triggered by a single photon. This single-photon-triggered QPT exists both in the cases of ignoring and including the so-called $A^2$ term, i.e., it is immune to the no-go theorem. It originally comes from the photon-dependent quantum criticality featured by the proposed hybrid quantum model. Moreover, a reversed superradiant QPT is induced by the competition between the introduced $A^2$ term and the optomechanical interaction. This work offers an approach to manipulate QPT with a single photon, which should inspire the exploration of single-photon quantum-criticality physics and the engineering of new single-photon quantum devices.

Elastic Wannier-Stark Ladders and Bloch Oscillations in 1D Granular Crystals

We report the numerical and experimental study of elastic Wannier-Stark Ladders and Bloch Oscillations in a tunable one-dimensional granular chain consisting of cylindrical particles. The Wannier-Stark Ladders are obtained by tuning the contact angles to introduce a gradient in the contact stiffness along the granular chain. These ladders manifest as resonant modes localized in the space. When excited at the corresponding resonant frequencies, we demonstrate the existence of time-resolved Bloch Oscillations. The direct velocity measurements using Laser Doppler Vibrometry agree well with the numerical simulation results. We also show the possibility of further tailoring these Bloch Oscillations by numerical simulations. Such tunable systems could be useful for applications involving the spatial localization of elastic energy.

Hybrid Interference Induced Flat Band Localization in Bipartite Optomechanical Lattices

The flat band localization, as an important phenomenon in solid state physics, is fundamentally interesting in the exploration of exotic ground property of many-body system. Here we demonstrate the appearance of a flat band in a general bipartite optomechanical lattice, which could have one or two dimensional framework. Physically, it is induced by the hybrid interference between the photon and phonon modes in optomechanical lattice, which is quite different from the destructive interference resulted from the special geometry structure in the normal lattice (e.g., Lieb lattice). Moreover, this novel flat band is controllable and features a special local density of states (LDOS) pattern, which makes it is detectable in experiments. This work offers an alternative approach to control the flat band localization with optomechanical interaction, which may substantially advance the fields of cavity optomechanics and solid state physics.

Single-photon-induced two qubits excitation without breaking parity symmetry

We investigate theoretically the model of two \qubits" system (one qubit having an auxiliary level) interacting with a single-mode resonator in the ultrastrong coupling regime. We show that a single photon could simultaneously excite two qubits without breaking the parity symmetry of system by properly encoding the excited states of qubits. The optimal parameter regime for achieving high probability approaching one is identified in the case of ignoring the system dissipation. Moreover, using experimentally feasible parameters, we also analyze the dissipation dynamics of the system, and present the realization of two-qubit excitation induced by single-photon. This work offers an alternative approach to realize the single-photon-induced two qubits excitation, which should advance the development of single-photon quantum technologies and have potential applications in quantum information science.

Nonlinear effects in modulated quantum optomechanics

The nonlinear quantum regime is crucial for implementing interesting quantum effects, which have wide applications in modern quantum science. Here we propose an effective method to reach the nonlinear quantum regime in a modulated optomechanical system (OMS), which is originally in the weak-coupling regime. The mechanical spring constant and optomechanical interaction are modulated periodically. This leads to the result that the resonant optomechanical interaction can be effectively enhanced into the single-photon strong-coupling regime by the modulation-induced mechanical parametric amplification. Moreover, the amplified phonon noise can be suppressed completely by introducing a squeezed vacuum reservoir, which ultimately leads to the realization of photon blockade in a weakly coupled OMS. The reached nonlinear quantum regime also allows us to engineer the nonclassical states (e.g., Schrödinger cat states) of cavity field, which are robust against the phonon noise. This work offers an alternative approach to enhance the quantum nonlinearity of an OMS, which should expand the applications of cavity optomechanics in the quantum realm.

Generation and amplification of high-order sideband induced by two-level atoms in a hybrid optomechanical system

It is quite important to enhance and control the optomechanically induced high-order sideband generation to achieve low-power optical comb and high-sensitivity sensing with an integratable structure. Here we present and analyze a proposal for enhancement and manipulation of optical nonlinearity and high-order sideband generation in a hybrid atom-cavity optomechanical system that is coherently driven by a bichromatic input field consisting of a control field and a probe field and works beyond the perturbative regime. Our numerical analysis with experimentally achievable parameters confirms that robust high-order sideband generation and typical spectral structures with non-perturbative features can be created even under weak driven fields. The dependence of the high-order sideband generation on the atomic parameters are also discussed in detail, including the decay rate of the atoms and the coupling parameter between the atoms and the cavity field. We show that the cutoff order as well as the amplitude of the higher order sidebands can be well tuned by the atomic coupling strength and the atomic decay rate. The proposed mechanism of enhancing optical nonlinearity is quite general and can be adopted to optomechanical systems with different types of cavity.

Dial-in Topological Metamaterials Based on Bistable Stewart Platform

Recently, there have been significant efforts to guide mechanical energy in structures by relying on a novel topological framework popularized by the discovery of topological insulators. Here, we propose a topological metamaterial system based on the design of the Stewart Platform, which can not only guide mechanical waves robustly in a desired path, but also can be tuned in situ to change this wave path at will. Without resorting to any active materials, the current system harnesses bistablilty in its unit cells, such that tuning can be performed simply by a dial-in action. Consequently, a topological transition mechanism inspired by the quantum valley Hall effect can be achieved. We show the possibility of tuning in a variety of topological and traditional waveguides in the same system, and numerically investigate key qualitative and quantitative differences between them. We observe that even though both types of waveguides can lead to significant wave transmission for a certain frequency range, topological waveguides are distinctive as they support robust, back scattering immune, one-way wave propagation.

Highly sensitive optical sensor for precision measurement of electrical charges based on optomechanically induced difference-sideband generation

Difference-sideband generation in an optomechanical system coupled to a charged object is investigated beyond the conventional linearized description of optomechanical interactions. An exponential decay law for difference-sideband generation in the presence of electric interaction is identified which exhibits more sensitivity to electrical charges than the conventional linearized effects. Using exact the same parameters with previous work based on the linearized dynamics of the optomechanical interactions, we show that optomechanically induced difference-sideband generation may enable an all-optical sensor for precision measurement of electrical charges with higher precision and lower power. The proposed mechanism is especially suited for on-chip optomechanical devices, where nonlinear optomechanical interaction in the weak coupling regime is within current experimental reach.
