Filter-free high-performance single photon emission from a quantum dot in a Fabry-Perot microcavity

Combining resonant excitation with Purcell-enhanced single quantum dots (QDs) stands out as a prominent strategy for realizing high performance solid-state single photon sources. However, optimizing photon efficiency requires addressing challenges associated with effectively separating the excitation laser from QDs' emission. Traditionally, this involves polarization filtering, which limits the achievable polarization directions and the scalability of photonic states. In this study, we have successfully tackled this challenge by employing spatially-orthogonal resonant excitation of QDs, deterministically coupled to monolithic Fabry-Perot microcavities. Leveraging the membrane cavity structures, we have achieved filter-free single photon resonant fluorescence. The resulting source produces single photons with a simultaneous high extraction efficiency of 0.87, purity of 0.9045(4), and indistinguishability of 0.963(4).

Telecom band quantum dot technologies for long-distance quantum networks

A future quantum internet is expected to generate, distribute, store and process quantum bits (qubits) over the globe by linking different quantum nodes via quantum states of light. To facilitate the long-haul operations, quantum repeaters, the building blocks for a long-distance quantum network, have to be operated in the telecom wavelengths to take advantage of both the low-loss fiber network and the well-established technologies for optical communications. Semiconductors quantum dots (QDs) so far have exhibited exceptional performances as key elements, i.e., quantum light sources and spin-photon interfaces, for quantum repeaters, but only in the near-infrared (NIR) regime. Therefore, the development of high-performance telecom-band QD devices is highly desirable for a future solid-state quantum internet based on fiber networks. In this review, we present the physics and the technological developments towards epitaxial QD devices emitting at the telecom O- and C-bands for quantum networks by using advanced epitaxial growth for direct telecom emission, and quantum frequency conversion (QFC) for telecom-band down-conversion. We also discuss the challenges and opportunities in the future to realize telecom QD devices with improved performances and expanded functionalities by taking advantage of hybrid integrations.

Tunable quantum dots in monolithic Fabry-Perot microcavities for high-performance single-photon sources

Cavity-enhanced single quantum dots (QDs) are the main approach towards ultra-high-performance solid-state quantum light sources for scalable photonic quantum technologies. Nevertheless, harnessing the Purcell effect requires precise spectral and spatial alignment of the QDs' emission with the cavity mode, which is challenging for most cavities. Here we have successfully integrated miniaturized Fabry-Perot microcavities with a piezoelectric actuator, and demonstrated a bright single photon source derived from a deterministically coupled QD within this microcavity. Leveraging the cavity-membrane structures, we have achieved large spectral-tunability via strain tuning. On resonance, we have obtained a high Purcell factor of approximately 9. The source delivers single photons with simultaneous high extraction efficiency of 0.58, high purity of 0.956(2) and high indistinguishability of 0.922(4). Together with a small footprint, our scheme facilitates the scalable integration of indistinguishable quantum light sources on-chip, and therefore removes a major barrier to the solid-state quantum information platforms based on QDs.

MHLAT: Multi-hop Label-wise Attention Model for Automatic ICD Coding

International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding is the task of assigning ICD diagnosis codes to clinical notes. This can be challenging given the large quantity of labels (nearly 9,000) and lengthy texts (up to 8,000 tokens). However, unlike the single-pass reading process in previous works, humans tend to read the text and label definitions again to get more confident answers. Moreover, although pretrained language models have been used to address these problems, they suffer from huge memory usage. To address the above problems, we propose a simple but effective model called the Multi-Hop Label-wise ATtention (MHLAT), in which multi-hop label-wise attention is deployed to get more precise and informative representations. Extensive experiments on three benchmark MIMIC datasets indicate that our method achieves significantly better or competitive performance on all seven metrics, with much fewer parameters to optimize.

Cubic C$_{20}$: An intrinsic superconducting carbon allotrope

Finding intrinsic carbon superconductor is an interesting topic. Based on density functional first-principles calculations, we first study the phonon-mediated superconductivity in a cubic metallic carbon allotrope, namely sc-C$_{20}$, which has been synthesized in experiment. The electron-phonon coupling is accurately computed with Wannier interpolation method. By solving the Eliashberg equations, we predict that sc-C$_{20}$ is an intrinsic carbon superconductor, without introducing any guest atoms or doping, whose transition temperature is determined to be about 24 K. Our findings enrich the family of carbon-based superconductors.

Dynamic resonance fluorescence in solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics

The coherent interaction between a two-level system and electromagnetic fields serves as a foundation for fundamental quantum physics and modern photonic quantum technology. A profound example is resonance fluorescence, where the non-classical photon emission appears in the form of a Mollow-triplet when a two-level system is continuously driven by a resonant laser. Pushing resonance fluorescence from a static to dynamic regime by using short optical pulses generates on-demand emissions of highly coherent single photons. Further increasing the driving strength in the dynamical regime enables the pursuit of exotic non-classical light emission in photon number superposition, photon number entanglement, and photon bundle states. However, the long-sought-after spectrum beyond the Mollow-triplet, a characteristic of dynamic resonance fluorescence under strong driving strength, has not been observed yet. Here we report the direct observation and systematic investigations of dynamic resonance fluorescence spectra beyond the Mollow-triplet in a solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamic system. The dynamic resonance fluorescence spectra with up to five pairs of side peaks, excitation detuning induced spectral asymmetry, and cavity filtering effect are observed and quantitatively modeled by a full quantum model with phonon scattering included. Time-resolved measurements further reveal that the multiple side peaks originate from interference of the emission associated with different temporal positions of the excitation pulses. Our work facilitates the generation of a variety of exotic quantum states of light with dynamic driving of two-level systems.

Bright Semiconductor Single-Photon Sources Pumped by Heterogeneously Integrated Micropillar lasers with Electrical Injections

The emerging hybrid integrated quantum photonics combines advantages of different functional components into a single chip to meet the stringent requirements for quantum information processing. Despite the tremendous progress in hybrid integrations of III-V quantum emitters with silicon-based photonic circuits and superconducting single-photon detectors, on-chip optical excitations of quantum emitters via miniaturized lasers towards single-photon sources (SPSs) with low power consumptions, small device footprints and excellent coherence properties is highly desirable yet illusive. In this work, we present realizations of bright semiconductor singe-photon sources heterogeneously integrated with on-chip electrically-injected microlasers. Different from previous one-by-one transfer printing technique implemented in hybrid quantum dot (QD) photonic devices, multiple deterministically coupled QD-circular Bragg Grating (CBG) SPSs were integrated with electrically-injected micropillar lasers at one time via a potentially scalable transfer printing process assisted by the wide-field photoluminescence (PL) imaging technique. Optically pumped by electrically-injected microlasers, pure single photons are generated with a high-brightness of a count rate of 3.8 M/s and an extraction efficiency of 25.44%. Such a high-brightness is due to the enhancement by the cavity mode of the CBG, which is confirmed by a Purcell factor of 2.5. Our work provides a powerful tool for advancing hybrid integrated quantum photonics in general and boosts the developments for realizing highly-compact, energy-efficient and coherent SPSs in particular.

Near-real-time global gridded daily CO$_2$ emissions 2021

We present a near-real-time global gridded daily CO$_2$ emissions dataset (GRACED) throughout 2021. GRACED provides gridded CO$_2$ emissions at a 0.1degree*0.1degree spatial resolution and 1-day temporal resolution from cement production and fossil fuel combustion over seven sectors, including industry, power, residential consumption, ground transportation, international aviation, domestic aviation, and international shipping. GRACED is prepared from a near-real-time daily national CO$_2$ emissions estimates (Carbon Monitor), multi-source spatial activity data emissions and satellite NO$_2$ data for time variations of those spatial activity data. GRACED provides the most timely overview of emissions distribution changes, which enables more accurate and timely identification of when and where fossil CO$_2$ emissions have rebounded and decreased. Uncertainty analysis of GRACED gives a grid-level two-sigma uncertainty of value of 19.9% in 2021, indicating the reliability of GRACED was not sacrificed for the sake of higher spatiotemporal resolution that GRACED provides. Continuing to update GRACED in a timely manner could help policymakers monitor energy and climate policies' effectiveness and make adjustments quickly.

Jacobian Methods for Dynamic Polarization Control in Optical Applications

Dynamic polarization control (DPC) is beneficial for many optical applications. It uses adjustable waveplates to perform automatic polarization tracking and manipulation. Efficient algorithms are essential to realizing an endless polarization control process at high speed. However, the standard gradientbased algorithm is not well analyzed. Here we model the DPC with a Jacobian-based control theory framework that finds a lot in common with robot kinematics. We then give a detailed analysis of the condition of the Stokes vector gradient as a Jacobian matrix. We identify the multi-stage DPC as a redundant system enabling control algorithms with null-space operations. An efficient, reset-free algorithm can be found. We anticipate more customized DPC algorithms to follow the same framework in various optical systems.

Ultra-low threshold continuous-wave quantum dot mini-BIC lasers

Highly compact lasers with ultra-low threshold and single-mode continuous wave (CW) operation have been a long sought-after component for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs), due to their excellent ability of trapping light and enhancing light-matter interaction, have been investigated in lasing configurations combining various BIC cavities and optical gain materials. However, the realization of BIC laser with a highly compact size and an ultra-low CW threshold has remained elusive. We demonstrate room temperature CW BIC lasers in the 1310 nm O-band wavelength range, by fabricating a miniaturized BIC cavity in an InAs/GaAs epitaxial quantum dot (QD) gain membrane. By enabling effective trapping of both light and carriers in all three dimensions, ultra-low threshold of 12 μW (0.052 kW/cm^2) is achieved. Single-mode lasing is also realized in cavities as small as only 5*5 unit-cells (~2.5*2.5 μm^2 cavity size) with a mode volume of 1.16(λ/n)^3. With its advantages in terms of a small footprint, ultralow power consumption, robustness of fabrication and adaptability for integration, the mini-BIC lasers offer a perspective light source for future PICs aimed at high-capacity optical communications, sensing and quantum information.

Tailoring solid-state single-photon sources with stimulated emissions

The coherent interaction of electromagnetic fields with solid-state two-level systems can yield deterministic quantum light sources for photonic quantum technologies. To date, the performance of semiconductor single-photon sources based on three-level systems is limited mainly due to a lack of high photon indistinguishability. Here, we tailor the cavity-enhanced spontaneous emission from a ladder-type three-level system in a single epitaxial quantum dot (QD) through stimulated emission. After populating the biexciton (XX) of the QD through two-photon resonant excitation (TPE), we use another laser pulse to selectively depopulate the XX state into an exciton (X) state with a predefined polarization. The stimulated XX-X emission modifies the X decay dynamics and yields improved polarized single-photon source characteristics such as a source brightness of 0.030(2), a single-photon purity of 0.998(1), and an indistinguishability of 0.926(4). Our method can be readily applied to existing QD single-photon sources and expands the capabilities of three-level systems for advanced quantum photonic functionalities.

Double-Pulse Generation of Indistinguishable Single Photons with Optically Controlled Polarization

Single-photon sources play a key role in photonic quantum technologies. Semiconductor quantum dots can emit indistinguishable single photons under resonant excitation. However, the resonance fluorescence technique typically requires cross-polarization filtering which causes a loss of the unpolarized quantum dot emission by 50%. To solve this problem, we demonstrate a method to generate indistinguishable single photons with optically controlled polarization by two laser pulses off-resonant with neutral exciton states. This scheme is realized by exciting the quantum dot to the biexciton state and subsequently driving the quantum dot to an exciton eigenstate. Combining with magnetic field, we demonstrated the generation of photons with optically controlled polarization (polarization degree of 101(2)%), laser-neutral exciton detuning up to 0.81 meV, high single-photon purity (99.6(1)%) and indistinguishability (85(4)%). Laser pulses can be blocked using polarization and spectral filtering. Our work makes an important step towards indistinguishable single-photon sources with near-unity collection efficiency.

High performance distributed feedback quantum dot lasers with laterally coupled dielectric grating

The combination of grating-based frequency-selective optical feedback mechanisms, such as distributed feedback (DFB) or distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) structures, with quantum dot (QD) gain materials is a main approach towards ultra-high-performance semiconductor lasers for many key novel applications, either as stand-alone sources or as on-chip sources in photonic integrated circuits. However, the fabrication of conventional buried Bragg grating structures on GaAs, GaAs/Si, GaSb and other material platforms have been met with major material regrowth difficulties. We report a novel and universal approach of introducing laterally coupled dielectric Bragg gratings to semiconductor lasers that allows highly controllable, reliable and strong coupling between the grating and the optical mode. We implement such a grating structure in a low-loss amorphous silicon material alongside GaAs lasers with InAs/GaAs QD gain layers. The resulting DFB laser arrays emit at pre-designed 0.8 THz LWDM frequency intervals in the 1300 nm band with record performance parameters, including side mode suppression ratios as high as 52.7 dB, continuous-wave output power of 27.7 mW (room-temperature) and 10 mW (at 70°C), and ultra-low relative intensity noise (RIN) of < -165 dB/Hz (2.5-25 GHz). The devices are also capable of operating isolator-free under very high external reflection levels of up to -12.3 dB whilst maintaining the high spectral and ultra-low RIN qualities. These results validate the novel laterally coupled dielectric grating as a technologically superior and potentially cost-effective approach for fabricating DFB and DBR lasers free of their semiconductor material constraints, thus universally applicable across different material platforms and wavelength bands.

A Pseudo Label-wise Attention Network for Automatic ICD Coding

Automatic International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding is defined as a kind of text multi-label classification problem, which is difficult because the number of labels is very large and the distribution of labels is unbalanced. The label-wise attention mechanism is widely used in automatic ICD coding because it can assign weights to every word in full Electronic Medical Records (EMR) for different ICD codes. However, the label-wise attention mechanism is computational redundant and costly. In this paper, we propose a pseudo label-wise attention mechanism to tackle the problem. Instead of computing different attention modes for different ICD codes, the pseudo label-wise attention mechanism automatically merges similar ICD codes and computes only one attention mode for the similar ICD codes, which greatly compresses the number of attention modes and improves the predicted accuracy. In addition, we apply a more convenient and effective way to obtain the ICD vectors, and thus our model can predict new ICD codes by calculating the similarities between EMR vectors and ICD vectors. Extensive experiments show the superior performance of our model. On the public MIMIC-III dataset and private Xiangya dataset, our model achieves micro f1 of 0.583 and 0.806, respectively, which outperforms other competing models. Furthermore, we verify the ability of our model in predicting new ICD codes. The case study shows how pseudo label-wise attention works, and demonstrates the effectiveness of pseudo label-wise attention mechanism.

Dielectric metasurface for independent complex-amplitude control of arbitrary two orthogonal states of polarization

Metasurfaces are planar structures that can manipulate the amplitude, phase and polarization (APP) of light at subwavelength scale. Although various functionalities have been proposed based on metasurface, a most general optical control, i.e., independent complex-amplitude (amplitude and phase) control of arbitrary two orthogonal states of polarizations, has not yet been realized. Such level of optical control can not only cover the various functionalities realized previously, but also enable new functionalities that are not feasible before. Here, we propose a single-layer dielectric metasurface to realize this goal and experimentally demonstrate several advanced functionalities, such as two independent full-color printing images under arbitrary elliptically orthogonal polarizations and dual sets of printing-hologram integrations. Our work opens the way for a wide range of applications in advanced image display, information encoding, and polarization optics.

Dual-Resonance Enhanced Quantum Light-Matter Interactions In Deterministically Coupled Quantum-Dot-Micopillars

Optical microcavities have widely been employed to enhance either the optical excitation or the photon emission processes for boosting light matter interactions at nanoscale. When both the excitation and emission processes are simultaneously facilitated by the optical resonances provided by the microcavities, as referred to the dual-resonance condition in this article, the performances of many nanophotonic devices approach to the optima. In this work, we present versatile accessing of dual-resonance conditions in deterministically coupled quantum-dot(QD)-micopillars, which enables emission from exciton (X) - charged exciton (CX) transition with improved single-photon purity. In addition, the rarely observed up-converted single-photon emission process is achieved under dual-resonance condition. We further exploit the vectorial nature of the high-order cavity modes to significantly improve the excitation efficiency under the dual-resonance condition. The dual-resonance enhanced light-matter interactions in the quantum regime provides a viable path for developing integrated quantum photonic devices based on cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) effect e.g., highly-efficient quantum light sources and quantum logical gates.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: Enhanced Star Formation in Galactic-scale Outflows

Using the integral field unit (IFU) data from Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, we collect a sample of 36 star forming galaxies that host galactic-scale outflows in ionized gas phase. The control sample is matched in the three dimensional parameter space of stellar mass, star formation rate and inclination angle. Concerning the global properties, the outflows host galaxies tend to have smaller size, more asymmetric gas disk, more active star formation in the center and older stellar population than the control galaxies. Comparing the stellar population properties along axes, we conclude that the star formation in the outflows host galaxies can be divided into two branches. One branch evolves following the inside-out formation scenario. The other locating in the galactic center is triggered by gas accretion or galaxy interaction, and further drives the galactic-scale outflows. Besides, the enhanced star formation and metallicity along minor axis of outflows host galaxies uncover the positive feedback and metal entrainment in the galactic-scale outflows. Observational data in different phases with higher spatial resolution are needed to reveal the influence of galactic-scale outflows on the star formation progress in detail.

Giant nonlinear response of 2D materials induced by optimal field-enhancement gain mode in hyperbolic meta-structure

Resonant modes in metamaterials have been widely utilized to amplify the optical response of 2D materials for practical device applications. However, the high loss at the resonant mode severely hinders metamaterial applications. Here, we introduce a field-enhancement gain (FEG) factor to find the FEG mode for significantly improving light-matter interaction. As a demonstration, we experimentally compared the second harmonic generation enhancement of monolayer MoS2 induced by the optimal FEG and resonant modes in hyperbolic meta-structures. With the optimal FEG mode, we obtained an enhancement of 22145-fold and a conversion efficiency of 1.1*10-6 W-1, which are respectively one and two orders of magnitude higher than that previously reported of monolayer MoS2. A broadband high-FEG region over ~80 nm where the nonlinear enhancement is larger than that induced by the resonant mode is achieved. The concept of FEG factor is general to metamaterials, opening a new way for advancing their applications.
