Probing nuclear structure with mean transverse momentum in relativistic isobar collisions

Transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) generation in relativistic heavy ion collisions is sensitive to the initial geometry and the final-state bulk evolution. We demonstrate with hydrodynamic calculations that the mean $p_T$ ratio ($R_{\langle p_{T}\rangle}$) between the highly similar isobar $^{96}_{44}$Ru+$^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr+$^{96}_{40}$Zr collisions is insensitive to the bulk evolution and remains sensitive to the small difference in the initial nuclear structure (neutron skin and deformation) between the Ru and Zr nuclei. We further find that nuclear deformation can produce an anticorrelation between $R_{\langle p_{T}\rangle}$ and eccentricity (or elliptic flow) in central collisions. These findings suggest that the $R_{\langle p_{T}\rangle}$ between the isobar systems can be used to measure the neutron skin thickness and deformation parameters, which can in turn constrain the nuclear symmetry energy slope parameter.

Directed exfoliating and ordered stacking of transition-metal-dichalcogenides

Two-dimensional van der Waals crystals arise limitless scope for designing novel combinations of physical properties via controlling the stacking order or twist angle of individual layers. Lattice orientation between stacked monolayers is significant not only for the engineering symmetry breaking but also for the study of many-body quantum phases and band topology. So far the state-of-art exfoliation approaches focusing on achievements of quality, size, yield, and scalability while lacking sufficient information on lattice orientation. Consequently, interlayer alignment is usually determined by later experiments, such as second harmonic generation spectroscopy, which increased the number of trials and errors for a designed artificial ordering and hampered the efficiency of systematic study. Herein, we report a lattice orientation distinguishable exfoliation method via gold favor epitaxy along the specific atomic step edges, meanwhile, fulfill requirements of high-quality, large-size, and high-yield of monolayers. Hexagonal- and rhombohedral-stacking configurations of bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides are built directly at once result of foreseeing the lattice orientation. Optical spectroscopy, electron diffraction, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy are used to study crystals quality, symmetric breaking, and band tuning, which supports the exfoliating mechanism we proposed. This strategy shows the ability for facilitates the development of ordering stacking especially for multilayers assembling in the future.

Automatic Identification of the End-Diastolic and End-Systolic Cardiac Frames from Invasive Coronary Angiography Videos

Automatic identification of proper image frames at the end-diastolic (ED) and end-systolic (ES) frames during the review of invasive coronary angiograms (ICA) is important to assess blood flow during a cardiac cycle, reconstruct the 3D arterial anatomy from bi-planar views, and generate the complementary fusion map with myocardial images. The current identification method primarily relies on visual interpretation, making it not only time-consuming but also less reproducible. In this paper, we propose a new method to automatically identify angiographic image frames associated with the ED and ES cardiac phases by using the trajectories of key vessel points (i.e. landmarks). More specifically, a detection algorithm is first used to detect the key points of coronary arteries, and then an optical flow method is employed to track the trajectories of the selected key points. The ED and ES frames are identified based on all these trajectories. Our method was tested with 62 ICA videos from two separate medical centers (22 and 9 patients in sites 1 and 2, respectively). Comparing consensus interpretations by two human expert readers, excellent agreement was achieved by the proposed algorithm: the agreement rates within a one-frame range were 92.99% and 92.73% for the automatic identification of the ED and ES image frames, respectively. In conclusion, the proposed automated method showed great potential for being an integral part of automated ICA image analysis.

PP-LCNet: A Lightweight CPU Convolutional Neural Network

We propose a lightweight CPU network based on the MKLDNN acceleration strategy, named PP-LCNet, which improves the performance of lightweight models on multiple tasks. This paper lists technologies which can improve network accuracy while the latency is almost constant. With these improvements, the accuracy of PP-LCNet can greatly surpass the previous network structure with the same inference time for classification. As shown in Figure 1, it outperforms the most state-of-the-art models. And for downstream tasks of computer vision, it also performs very well, such as object detection, semantic segmentation, etc. All our experiments are implemented based on PaddlePaddle. Code and pretrained models are available at PaddleClas.

Pressure-induced Reemergence of Superconductivity in Topological Kagome Metal CsV3Sb5

Quasi-two-dimensional kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) have attracted much recent interest due to exotic quantum phenomena such as unconventional superconductivity, topological charge order and giant anomalous Hall effect. Here we report pressure-induced reemergent superconductivity in CsV3Sb5 by electrical transport measurements under high pressures up to 47.9 GPa. We show that the superconducting critical temperature Tc is first enhanced by pressure and reaches its first maximum ~ 8.9 K at 0.8 GPa, then the Tc is suppressed by pressure and cannot be detected above 7.5 GPa, forming a dome-shaped superconducting phase diagram. Remarkably, upon further compression above 16.5 GPa, a new superconducting state arises, of which Tc is enhanced by pressure to a second maximum ~ 5.0 K and the reemergent superconductivity keeps robust up to 47.9 GPa. Combined with high-pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements that demonstrate the stability of the pristine hexagonal phase up to 43.1 GPa, we suggest that the reemergence of superconductivity in the V-based superconductor could be attributed to a pressure-induced Lifshitz transition.

GitHub-OSS Fixit: Fixing bugs at scale in a Software Engineering Course

Many studies have shown the benefits of introducing open-source projects into teaching Software Engineering (SE) courses. However, there are several limitations of existing studies that limit the wide adaptation of open-source projects in a classroom setting, including (1) the selected project is limited to one particular project, (2) most studies only investigated on its effect on teaching a specific SE concept, and (3) students may make mistakes in their contribution which leads to poor quality code. Meanwhile, software companies have successfully launched programs like Google Summer of Code (GSoC) and FindBugs "fixit" to contribute to open-source projects. Inspired by the success of these programs, we propose GitHub-OSS Fixit, a course project where students are taught to contribute to open-source Java projects by fixing bugs reported in GitHub. We described our course outline to teach students SE concepts by encouraging the usages of several automated program analysis tools. We also included the carefully designed instructions that we gave to students for participating in GitHub-OSS Fixit. As all lectures and labs are conducted online, we think that our course design could help in guiding future online SE courses. Overall, our survey results show that students think that GitHub-OSS Fixit could help them to improve many skills and apply the knowledge taught in class. In total, 154 students have submitted 214 pull requests to 24 different Java projects, in which 59 of them have been merged, and 82 have been closed by developers.

Multi-Classifier Interactive Learning for Ambiguous Speech Emotion Recognition

In recent years, speech emotion recognition technology is of great significance in industrial applications such as call centers, social robots and health care. The combination of speech recognition and speech emotion recognition can improve the feedback efficiency and the quality of service. Thus, the speech emotion recognition has been attracted much attention in both industry and academic. Since emotions existing in an entire utterance may have varied probabilities, speech emotion is likely to be ambiguous, which poses great challenges to recognition tasks. However, previous studies commonly assigned a single-label or multi-label to each utterance in certain. Therefore, their algorithms result in low accuracies because of the inappropriate representation. Inspired by the optimally interacting theory, we address the ambiguous speech emotions by proposing a novel multi-classifier interactive learning (MCIL) method. In MCIL, multiple different classifiers first mimic several individuals, who have inconsistent cognitions of ambiguous emotions, and construct new ambiguous labels (the emotion probability distribution). Then, they are retrained with the new labels to interact with their cognitions. This procedure enables each classifier to learn better representations of ambiguous data from others, and further improves the recognition ability. The experiments on three benchmark corpora (MAS, IEMOCAP, and FAU-AIBO) demonstrate that MCIL does not only improve each classifier's performance, but also raises their recognition consistency from moderate to substantial.

Probing the neutron skin with ultrarelativistic isobaric collisions

Particle production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions depends on the details of the nucleon density distributions in the colliding nuclei. We demonstrate that the charged hadron multiplicity distributions in isobaric collisions at ultrarelativistic energies provide a novel approach to determine the poorly known neutron density distributions and thus the neutron skin thickness in finite nuclei, which can in turn put stringent constraints on the nuclear symmetry energy.

Inferring the unknown parameters in Differential Equation by Gaussian Process Regression with Constraint

Differential Equation (DE) is a commonly used modeling method in various scientific subjects such as finance and biology. The parameters in DE models often have interesting scientific interpretations, but their values are often unknown and need to be estimated from the measurements of the DE. In this work, we propose a Bayesian inference framework to solve the problem of estimating the parameters of the DE model, from the given noisy and scarce observations of the solution only. A key issue in this problem is to robustly estimate the derivatives of a function from noisy observations of only the function values at given location points, under the assumption of a physical model in the form of differential equation governing the function and its derivatives. To address the key issue, we use the Gaussian Process Regression with Constraint (GPRC) method which jointly model the solution, the derivatives, and the parametric differential equation, to estimate the solution and its derivatives. For nonlinear differential equations, a Picard-iteration-like approximation of linearization method is used so that the GPRC can be still iteratively applicable. A new potential which combines the data and equation information, is proposed and used in the likelihood for our inference. With numerical examples, we illustrate that the proposed method has competitive performance against existing approaches for estimating the unknown parameters in DEs.

Range-Doppler Information and Doppler Scattering Information in Multipulse Radar

In this paper, the general radar measurement probfilems of determining range, Doppler frequency and scatteringproperties parameters are investigated from the viewpoint of Shannons information theory. We adopt the mutual information to evaluate the accuracy of the classification and estimation. The range-Doppler information is examined under the condition that the target is of radial velocity. Its asymptotic upper bound and the corresponding entropy error (EE) are further formulated theoretically. Additionally, the Doppler scattering information induced by targets random motion characteristics is discussed. From the derivation, it is concluded that the Doppler scattering information depends on the eigenvalues of the target scattering correlation matrix. Especially in the case where the pulse interval is larger than targets coherence time, we can find that the formula of the Doppler scattering information is similar to Shannons channel capacity equation, indicating the inherent consistency between the communication theory and radar field. Numerical simulations of these information contents are presented to confirm our theoretical observations. The relationship between the information content and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) reflects the changes in information acquisition efficiency of a radar system, providing guidance for system designers.

Persistent Insulator: Avoidance of Metallization at Megabar Pressures in Strongly Spin-Orbit-Coupled Sr2IrO4

It is commonly anticipated that an insulating state collapses in favor of an emergent metallic state at high pressures as the unit cell shrinks and the electronic bandwidth broadens to fill the insulating energy band gap. Here we report a rare insulating state that persists up to at least 185 GPa in the antiferromagnetic iridate Sr2IrO4, which is the archetypical spin-orbit-driven Jeff = 1/2 insulator. This study shows the electrical resistance of single-crystal Sr2IrO4 initially decreases with applied pressure, reaches a minimum in the range, 32 - 38 GPa, then abruptly rises to fully recover the insulating state with further pressure increases up to 185 GPa. Our synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman scattering data show the onset of the rapid increase in resistance is accompanied by a structural phase transition from the native tetragonal I41/acd phase to an orthorhombic Pbca phase (with much reduced symmetry) at 40.6 GPa. The clear-cut correspondence of these two anomalies is key to understanding the stability of the insulating state at megabar pressures: Pressure-induced, severe structural distortions prevent the expected metallization, despite the 26% volume compression attained at the highest pressure accessed in this study. Moreover, the resistance of Sr2IrO4 remains stable while the applied pressure is tripled from 61 GPa to 185 GPa. These results suggest that a novel type of electronic Coulomb correlation compensates the anticipated band broadening in strongly spin-orbit-coupled materials at megabar pressures.

Ruling out the supersoft high-density symmetry energy from the discovery of PSR J0740+6620 with mass $2.14^{+0.10}_{-0.09}M_\odot$

Using the very recently reported mass $2.14^{+0.10}_{-0.09}M_\odot$ of PSR J0740+6620 together with the data of finite nuclei and the constraints on the equation of state of symmetric nuclear matter at suprasaturation densities from flow data in heavy-ion collisions, we show that the symmetry energy $E_{\rm sym}(n)$ cannot be supersoft so that it becomes negative at suprasaturation densities in neutron stars (NSs) and thus may make the NS have a pure neutron matter core. This is in contrast to the fact that using the mass $2.01 \pm 0.04 M_\odot$ of PSR J0348+0432 as the NS maximum mass cannot rule out the supersoft high-density $E_{\rm sym}(n)$. Furthermore, we find the stiffer high-density $E_{\rm sym}(n)$ based on the existence of $2.14M_\odot$ NSs leads to a strong constraint of $Λ_{1.4} \ge 348^{+88}_{-51}$ for the dimensionless tidal deformability of the canonical $1.4M_\odot$ NS.

Pressure-tunable large anomalous Hall effect of the ferromagnetic kagome-lattice Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2

We investigate the pressure evolution of the anomalous Hall effect in magnetic topological semimetal Co3Sn2S2 in diamond anvil cells with pressures up to 44.9-50.9 GPa. No evident trace of structural phase transition is detected through synchrotron x-ray diffraction over the measured pressure range of 0.2-50.9 GPa. We find that the anomalous Hall resistivity and the ferromagnetism are monotonically suppressed as increasing pressure and almost vanish around 22 GPa. The anomalous Hall conductivity varies non-monotonically against pressure at low temperatures, involving competition between original and emergent Weyl nodes. Combined with first-principle calculations, we reveal that the intrinsic mechanism due to the Berry curvature dominates the anomalous Hall effect under high pressure.

Equation of state of dense matter in the multimessenger era

While the equation of state (EOS) of symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) at suprasaturation densities has been relatively well constrained from heavy-ion collisions, the EOS of high-density neutron-rich matter is still largely uncertain due to the poorly known high-density behavior of the symmetry energy. Using the constraints on the EOS of SNM at suprasaturation densities from heavy-ion collisions together with the data of finite nuclei and the existence of $2M_\odot$ neutron stars from electromagnetic (EM) observations, we show that the high-density symmetry energy cannot be too soft, which leads to lower bounds on dimensionless tidal deformability of $Λ_{1.4} \ge 193$ and radius of $R_{1.4} \ge 11.1$ km for $1.4M_\odot$ neutron star. Furthermore, we find that the recent constraint of $Λ_{1.4} \le 580$ from the gravitational wave signal GW170817 detected from the binary neutron star merger by the LIGO and Virgo Collaborations rules out too stiff high-density symmetry energy, leading to an upper limit of $R_{1.4} \le 13.3$ km. All these terrestrial nuclear experiments and astrophysical observations based on strong, EM and gravitational measurements together put stringent constraints on the high-density symmetry energy and the EOS of SNM, pure neutron matter and neutron star matter.

Maximal green sequences of quivers with multiple edges

In this paper we completely describe maximal green sequences (MGS) of acyclic quivers with multiple edges in terms of maximal green sequences of their multiple edge-free (ME-free) versions. In particular we establish that any MGS of a quiver must be an ME-free MGS of its ME-free version. For quivers with oriented cycles our results for acyclic quivers do not apply. However a weaker result is available under certain conditions.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in topological semimetal NbAs2

Topological superconductivity with Majorana bound states, which are critical to implement nonabelian quantum computation, may be realized in three-dimensional semimetals with nontrivial topological feature, when superconducting transition occurs in the bulk. Here, we report pressure-induced superconductivity in a transition-metal dipnictide NbAs2. The emergence of superconductivity is not accompanied by any structural phase transition up to the maximum experimental pressure of 29.8 GPa, as supported by pressure-dependent synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Intriguingly, the Raman study reveals rapid phonon mode hardening and broadening above 10 GPa, in coincident with the superconducting transition. Using first principle calculations, we determine Fermi surface change induced by pressure, which steadily increases the density of states without breaking the electron-hole compensation. Noticeably, the main hole pocket of NbAs2 encloses one time-reversal-invariant momenta of the monoclinic lattice, suggesting NbAs2 as a candidate of topological superconductors.

Extended Skyrme interactions for transport model simulations of heavy-ion collisions

Based on an extended Skyrme interaction that includes the terms in relative momenta up to sixth order, corresponding to the so-called Skyrme pseudopotential up to next-to-next-to-next-to leading order (N3LO), we derive the expressions of Hamiltonian density and single nucleon potential under general non-equilibrium conditions which can be applied in transport model simulations of heavy-ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei. While the conventional Skyrme interactions, which include the terms in relative momenta up to second order, predict an incorrect behavior as a function of energy for nucleon optical potential in nuclear matter, the present extended N3LO Skyrme interaction can give a nice description for the empirical nucleon optical potential. We also construct three interaction sets with different high-density behaviors of the symmetry energy, by fitting both the empirical nucleon optical potential up to energy of $1$ GeV and the empirical properties of isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. These extended N3LO Skyrme interactions will be useful in transport model simulations of heavy-ion collisions induced by neutron-rich nuclei at intermediate and high energies, and they can also be useful in nuclear structure studies within the mean-field model.

Pressure induced superconductivity bordering a charge-density-wave state in NbTe4 with strong spinorbit coupling

Transition-metal chalcogenides host various phases of matter, such as charge-density wave (CDW), superconductors, and topological insulators or semimetals. Superconductivity and its competition with CDW in low-dimensional compounds have attracted much interest and stimulated considerable research. Here we report pressure induced superconductivity in a strong spin-orbit (SO) coupled quasi-one-dimensional (1D) transition-metal chalcogenide NbTe$_4$, which is a CDW material under ambient pressure. With increasing pressure, the CDW transition temperature is gradually suppressed, and superconducting transition, which is fingerprinted by a steep resistivity drop, emerges at pressures above 12.4 GPa. Under pressure $p$ = 69 GPa, zero resistance is detected with a transition temperature $T_c$ = 2.2 K and an upper critical field $H_{c2}$= 2 T. We also find large magnetoresistance (MR) up to 102\% at low temperatures, which is a distinct feature differentiating NbTe$_4$ from other conventional CDW materials.
