Lattices of strongly reflexive masa-bimodules

We characterise the density of the positive rank one subspace of a masa-bimodule in terms of its support. We prove that strongly reflexive masa-bimodules form a Boolean lattice under naturally defined operations. We examine the lattice-theoretic properties of the class of strongly reflexive masa-bimodules that are also operator systems and some natural subclasses thereof, and provide a topological description of the lattice operations in the case the masa-bimodules arise from closed subsets of a locally compact group.

Relating insplittings of 2-graphs and of textile systems

The graphical operation of insplitting is key to understanding conjugacy of shifts of finite type (SFTs) in both one and two dimensions. In this paper, we consider two approaches to studying 2-dimensional SFTs: textile systems and rank-2 graphs. Nasu's textile systems describe all two-sided 2D SFTs up to conjugacy, whereas the 2-graphs (higher-rank graphs of rank 2) introduced by Kumjian and Pask yield associated C*-algebras. Both models have a naturally-associated notion of insplitting. We show that these notions do not coincide, raising the question of whether insplitting a 2-graph induces a conjugacy of the associated one-sided 2-dimensional SFTs. Our first main result shows how to reconstruct 2-graph insplitting using textile-system insplits and inversions, and consequently proves that 2-graph insplitting induces a conjugacy of dynamical systems. We also present several other facets of the relationship between 2-graph insplitting and textile-system insplitting. Incorporating an insplit of the bottom graph of the textile system turns out to be key to this relationship. By articulating the connection between operator-algebraic and dynamical notions of insplitting in two dimensions, this article lays the groundwork for a C*-algebraic framework for classifying one-sided conjugacy in higher-dimensional SFTs.

Cartan semigroups and twisted groupoid C*-algebras

We prove that twisted groupoid C*-algebras are characterised, up to isomorphism, by having Cartan semigroups, a natural generalisation of normaliser semigroups of Cartan subalgebras. This extends the classic Kumjian-Renault theory to general twisted \'etale groupoid C*-algebras, even non-reduced C*-algebras of non-effective groupoids.

The local bisection hypothesis for twisted groupoid C*-algebras

In this note, we present criteria that are equivalent to a locally compact Hausdorff groupoid $G$ being effective. One of these conditions is that $G$ satisfies the "C*-algebraic local bisection hypothesis"; that is, that every normaliser in the reduced twisted groupoid C*-algebra is supported on an open bisection. The semigroup of normalisers plays a fundamental role in our proof, as does the semigroup of normalisers in cyclic group C*-algebras.

Linear preservers on idempotents of Fourier algebras

In this article, we give a representation of bounded complex linear operators which preserve idempotent elements on the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group. When such an operator is moreover positive or contractive, we show that the operator is induced by either a continuous group homomorphism or a continuous group anti-homomorphism. If the groups are totally disconnected, bounded homomorphisms on the Fourier algebra can be realised by the idempotent preserving operators.

Reconstruction of twisted Steinberg algebras

We show how to recover a discrete twist over an ample Hausdorff groupoid from a pair consisting of an algebra and what we call a quasi-Cartan subalgebra. We identify precisely which twists arise in this way (namely, those that satisfy the local bisection hypothesis), and we prove that the assignment of twisted Steinberg algebras to such twists and our construction of a twist from a quasi-Cartan pair are mutually inverse. We identify the algebraic pairs that correspond to effective groupoids and to principal groupoids. We also indicate the scope of our results by identifying large classes of twists for which the local bisection hypothesis holds automatically.

Filtering germs: Groupoids associated to inverse semigroups

We investigate various groupoids associated to an arbitrary inverse semigroup with zero. We show that the groupoid of filters with respect to the natural partial order is isomorphic to the groupoid of germs arising from the standard action of the inverse semigroup on the space of idempotent filters. We also investigate the restriction of this isomorphism to the groupoid of tight filters and to the groupoid of ultrafilters.

The C*-algebra of the Boidol group

The Boidol group is the smallest non-*-regular exponential Lie group. It is of dimension 4 and its Lie algebra is an extension of the Heisenberg Lie algebra by the reals with the roots 1 and -1. We describe the C*-algebra of the Boidol group as an algebra of operator fields defined over the spectrum of the group. It is the only connected solvable Lie group of dimension less than or equal to 4 whose group C*-algebra had not yet been determined.

Twisted Steinberg algebras

We introduce twisted Steinberg algebras over a commutative unital ring $R$. These generalise Steinberg algebras and are a purely algebraic analogue of Renault's twisted groupoid C*-algebras. In particular, for each ample Hausdorff groupoid $G$ and each locally constant $2$-cocycle $\sigma$ on $G$ taking values in the units $R^\times$, we study the algebra $A_R(G,\sigma)$ consisting of locally constant compactly supported $R$-valued functions on $G$, with convolution and involution "twisted" by $\sigma$. We also introduce a "discretised" analogue of a twist $\Sigma$ over a Hausdorff \'etale groupoid $G$, and we show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between locally constant $2$-cocycles on $G$ and discrete twists over $G$ admitting a continuous global section. Given a discrete twist $\Sigma$ arising from a locally constant $2$-cocycle $\sigma$ on an ample Hausdorff groupoid $G$, we construct an associated twisted Steinberg algebra $A_R(G;\Sigma)$, and we show that it coincides with $A_R(G,\sigma^{-1})$. Given any discrete field $\mathbb{F}_d$, we prove a graded uniqueness theorem for $A_{\mathbb{F}_d}(G,\sigma)$, and under the additional hypothesis that $G$ is effective, we prove a Cuntz--Krieger uniqueness theorem and show that simplicity of $A_{\mathbb{F}_d}(G,\sigma)$ is equivalent to minimality of $G$.

Schur null preserving maps

We provide a characterisation of Schur multiplicative maps on both finite and infinite dimensional matrix spaces, and show that every surjective Schur multiplicative contraction is automatically an isometry. We also generalise this result and provide a characterisation of Schur null preserving maps on $m\times n$ matrices and on Schur multipliers.

Operator system structures and extensions of Schur multipliers

For a given C*-algebra $\mathcal{A}$, we establish the existence of maximal and minimal operator $\mathcal{A}$-system structures on an AOU $\mathcal{A}$-space. In the case $\mathcal{A}$ is a W*-algebra, we provide an abstract characterisation of dual operator $\mathcal{A}$-systems, and study the maximal and minimal dual operator $\mathcal{A}$-system structures on a dual AOU $\mathcal{A}$-space. We introduce operator-valued Schur multipliers, and provide a Grothendieck-type characterisation. We study the positive extension problem for a partially defined operator-valued Schur multiplier $φ$ and, under some richness conditions, characterise its affirmative solution in terms of the equality between the canonical and the maximal dual operator $\mathcal{A}$-system structures on an operator system naturally associated with the domain of $φ$.

Positive extensions of Schur multipliers

We introduce partially defined Schur multipliers and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of extensions to fully defined positive Schur multipliers, in terms of operator systems canonically associated with their domains. We use these results to study the problem of extending a positive definite function defined on a symmetric subset of a locally compact group to a positive definite function defined on the whole group.

A retract theorem for nilpotent Lie groups

Let $G= \exp(\g)$ be a connected, simply connected nilpotent Lie group. We show that for every $G$-invariant smooth sub-manifold $M$ of $g^*$, there exists an open relatively compact subset $\mathcal{M}$ of $M$ such that for any smooth adapted field of operators $(F(l))_{l\in M}$ supported in $G\cdot \mathcal{M}$ there exists a Schwartz function $f$ on $G$ such that $π_l(f)= \op_{F(l)}$ for all $l\in M$. This retract theorem can then be used to show that for every Lie group $\G$ of automorphisms of $G$ containing the inner automorphisms of $G$ with locally closed $\G$-orbits in $\g^*$, the proper $\G$-prime two-sided closed ideals of $L^1(G)$ are the kernels of $\G$-orbits in $\hat{G}$.

The solvable Lie group $N_{6,28}$: an example of an almost $C_0(\mathcal{K})$-C*-algebra

Motivated by the description of the C*-algebra of the affine automorphism group $N_{6,28}$ of the Siegel upper half-plane of degree 2 as an algebra of operator fields defined over the unitary dual $\widehat{N_{6,28}}$ of the group, we introduce a family of C*-algebras, which we call almost $C_0(\mathcal{K})$, and we show that the C*-algebra of the group $N_{6,28}$ belongs to this class.
