CRAFTS for HI cosmology: I. data processing pipeline and validation tests

We present the calibration procedures and validation of source measurement with the data of the Commensal Radio Astronomy FAST Survey (CRAFTS) for \HI intensity mapping by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST). Using 70-hour drift-scan observation with the L-band (1.05-1.45GHz) 19-beam receiver, we obtain the data covering $270\,\rm deg^2$ sky area. We employ both the pulsar backend and the spectrum backend to calibrate the spectral time-ordered-data (TOD) before projecting them onto HEALPix maps. We produce calibrated TOD with frequency resolution of 30kHz and time resolution of 1s and the map data-cube with frequency resolution of 30kHz and spatial resolution of $2.95\,\rm arcmin^2$. We examine the pointing errors, noise overflow, RFI contamination and their effect on the data quality. The resulting noise level is $\sim$ 5.7mJy for the calibrated TOD and 1.6mJy for the map, consistent with the theoretical predictions within 5\% at RFI-free channels. We also validate the data by Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and find the residual map looks thermal noise dominated after removing 30 modes. We identify 447 isolated bright continuum sources in our data matching the NRAO-VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) catalog, with relative flux error of 8.3\% for TOD and 6.6\% for the map-level. We also measure the \HI emission of 90 galaxies with redshift $z<0.07$ and compare with \HI-MaNGA spectra, yielding an overall relative \HI integral flux error of 16.7\%. These results provide an important first step in assessing the feasibility of conducting cosmological \HI detection with CRAFTS.

PANCAKE: Python bAsed Numerical Color-magnitude-diagram Analysis pacKagE

Stellar populations serve as a fossil record of galaxy formation and evolution, providing crucial information about the history of star formation and galaxy evolution. The color-magnitude diagram (CMD) stands out as the most accurate tool currently available for inferring the star formation histories (SFHs) of nearby galaxies with stellar-resolved multiband data. The launch of new space telescopes, including JWST, EUCLID, and the upcoming CSST and Roman, will significantly increase the number of stellar-resolved galaxies over the next decade. A user-friendly and customizable CMD fitting package would be valuable for galaxy evolution studies with these data. We develop an open-source Python-based package named \textsc{pancake}, which is fast and accurate in determining SFHs and stellar population parameters in nearby galaxies. We have validated our method via a series of comprehensive tests. First, \textsc{pancake} performs well on mock data, meanwhile the random and systematic uncertainties are quantified. Second, \textsc{pancake} performs well on observational data containing a star cluster and 38 dwarf galaxies (50 fields). Third, the star formation rate (SFR) from \textsc{pancake} is consistent with the SFR from FUV photometry. To ensure compatibility and accuracy, we have included isochrone libraries generated using PARSEC for most of the optical and near-infrared filters used in space telescopes such as HST, JWST, and the upcoming CSST.

Automated Identification and Segmentation of Hi Sources in CRAFTS Using Deep Learning Method

Identifying neutral hydrogen (\hi) galaxies from observational data is a significant challenge in \hi\ galaxy surveys. With the advancement of observational technology, especially with the advent of large-scale telescope projects such as FAST and SKA, the significant increase in data volume presents new challenges for the efficiency and accuracy of data processing. To address this challenge, in this study, we present a machine learning-based method for extracting \hi\ sources from the three-dimensional (3D) spectral data obtained from the Commensal Radio Astronomy FAST Survey (CRAFTS). We have carefully assembled a specialized dataset, HISF, rich in \hi\ sources, specifically designed to enhance the detection process. Our model, Unet-LK, utilizes the advanced 3D-Unet segmentation architecture and employs an elongated convolution kernel to effectively capture the intricate structures of \hi\ sources. This strategy ensures a reliable identification and segmentation of \hi\ sources, achieving notable performance metrics with a recall rate of 91.6\% and an accuracy of 95.7\%. These results substantiate the robustness of our dataset and the effectiveness of our proposed network architecture in the precise identification of \hi\ sources. Our code and dataset is publicly available at \url{https://github.com/fishszh/HISF}.

The ALMaQUEST Survey XV: The Dependence of the Molecular-to-Atomic Gas Ratios on Resolved Optical Diagnostics

The atomic-to-molecular gas conversion is a critical step in the baryon cycle of galaxies, which sets the initial conditions for subsequent star formation and influences the multi-phase interstellar medium. We compiled a sample of 94 nearby galaxies with observations of multi-phase gas contents by utilizing public H I, CO, and optical IFU data from the MaNGA survey together with new FAST H I observations. In agreement with previous results, our sample shows that the global molecular-to-atomic gas ratio ($R_{\rm mol} \equiv$ log $M_{\rm H_2}/M_{\rm H\ I}$) is correlated with the global stellar mass surface density $μ_*$ with a Kendall's $τ$ coefficient of 0.25 and $p < 10^{-3}$, less tightly but still correlated with stellar mass and NUV$-$ r color, and not related to the specific star formation rate (sSFR). The cold gas distribution and kinematics inferred from the H I and CO global profile asymmetry and shape do not significantly rely on $R_{\rm mol}$. Thanks to the availability of kpc-scale observations of MaNGA, we decompose galaxies into H II, composite, and AGN-dominated regions by using the BPT diagrams. With increasing $R_{\rm mol}$, the fraction of H II regions within 1.5 effective radius decreases slightly; the density distribution in the spatially resolved BPT diagram also changes significantly, suggesting changes in metallicity and ionization states. Galaxies with high $R_{\rm mol}$ tend to have high oxygen abundance, both at one effective radius with a Kendall's $τ$ coefficient of 0.37 ($p < 10^{-3}$) and their central regions. Among all parameters investigated here, the oxygen abundance at one effective radius has the strongest relation with global $R_{\rm mol}$, but the dependence of gas conversion on gas distribution and galaxy ionization states is weak.

Detections of 21-cm absorption with a blind FAST survey at z $\leqslant$ 0.09

We present the early science results from a blind search of the extragalactic HI 21-cm absorption lines at z $\leqslant$ 0.09 with the drift-scan observation of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). We carried out the search using the data collected in 643.8 hours by the ongoing Commensal Radio Astronomy FasT Survey (CRAFTS), which spans a sky area of 3155 deg$^{2}$ and covers 44827 radio sources with a flux density greater than 12 mJy. Due to the radio frequency interference (RFI), only the relatively clean data in the frequency range of 1.3-1.45 GHz are used in the present work. Under the assumption of $T_{s}/c_{f}$ = 100 K, the total completeness-corrected comoving absorption path length spanned by our data and sensitive to Damped Lyman $α$ Absorbers (DLAs) are $ΔX^{inv}$ = 8.33$\times10^3$ ($Δz^{inv} = 7.81\times10^{3}$) for intervening absorption. For associated absorption, the corresponding values are $ΔX^{asc}$ = 12.8 ($Δz^{asc} = 11.9$). Three known HI absorbers (UGC 00613, 3C 293 and 4C +27.14) and two new HI absorbers (towards NVSS J231240-052547 and NVSS J053118+315412) are detected blindly. We fit the HI profiles with multi-components Gaussian functions and calculate the redshift (0.063, 0.066), width, flux density, optical depth and HI column densities for each absorption. Our results demonstrate the power of FAST in blindly searching HI absorbers. For absorption towards NVSS J231240-052547, the optical counterparts are faint and currently lack existing spectra. The most likely interpretation is that a radio-loud active galactic nucleus (AGN) is faint in the optical as the background source, with a faint optical absorber in between. NVSS J053118+315412 exhibits an associated absorption with a complex profile, which may suggest unsettled gas structures or gas accretion onto the supermassive black hole (SMBH).

High-order harmonic generation in X-ray range from laser induced noble gas multivalent ions

Sub-femtosecond x-ray burst is powerful tool for probing and imaging electronic and concomitant atomic motion in attosecond physics. For years, x-ray source (above 2 keV) had mainly been obtained from X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) or synchrotron radiation, which are high energy consumption, high cost and huge volume. Here we propose a low-cost and small-size method to generate X-ray source. We experimentally obtained high photon energy spectrum (~ 5.2 keV) through both atom and multiple valence state ions using a near-infrared 1.45 μm driving laser interacting with krypton gas, according to our knowledge, which is the highest photon energy generated through high-order harmonic generation up to now. In our scheme, multi-keV photon energy can be achieved with a relaxed requirement on experimental conditions, and make time-resolved studies more accessible to many laboratories that are capable of producing high energy photon extending to hard x-ray region. Furthermore, our scheme minimizes the influence of X-ray fluorescence process on detection, and can also be utilized to study the quantum-optical nature of high-order harmonic generation.

Intense keV isolated attosecond pulse generation by orthogonally polarized multicycle midinfrared two-color laser field

We theoretically investigate the generation of intense keV attosecond pulses in an orthogonally polarized multicycle midinfrared two-color laser field. It is demonstrated that multiple continuum-like humps, which have a spectral width of about twenty orders of harmonics and an intensity of about one order higher than adjacent normal harmonic peaks, are generated under proper two-color delays, owing to the reduction of the number of electron-ion recollisions and suppression of inter-half-cycle interference effect of multiple electron trajectories when the long wavelength midinfrared driving field is used. Using the semiclassical trajectory model, we have revealed the two-dimensional manipulation of the electron-ion recollision process, which agrees well with the time frequency analysis. By filtering these humps, intense isolated attosecond pulses are directly generated without any phase compensation. Our proposal provides a simple technique to generate intense isolated attosecond pulses with various central photon energies covering the multi-keV spectral regime by using multicycle driving pulses with high pump energy in experiment.
