Symbiotic Brain-Machine Drawing via Visual Brain-Computer Interfaces

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are evolving from research prototypes into clinical, assistive, and performance enhancement technologies. Despite the rapid rise and promise of implantable technologies, there is a need for better and more capable wearable and non-invasive approaches whilst also minimising hardware requirements. We present a non-invasive BCI for mind-drawing that iteratively infers a subject's internal visual intent by adaptively presenting visual stimuli (probes) on a screen encoded at different flicker-frequencies and analyses the steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs). A Gabor-inspired or machine-learned policies dynamically update the spatial placement of the visual probes on the screen to explore the image space and reconstruct simple imagined shapes within approximately two minutes or less using just single-channel EEG data. Additionally, by leveraging stable diffusion models, reconstructed mental images can be transformed into realistic and detailed visual representations. Whilst we expect that similar results might be achievable with e.g. eye-tracking techniques, our work shows that symbiotic human-AI interaction can significantly increase BCI bit-rates by more than a factor 5x, providing a platform for future development of AI-augmented BCI.

Visionary Co-Driver: Enhancing Driver Perception of Potential Risks with LLM and HUD

Drivers' perception of risky situations has always been a challenge in driving. Existing risk-detection methods excel at identifying collisions but face challenges in assessing the behavior of road users in non-collision situations. This paper introduces Visionary Co-Driver, a system that leverages large language models to identify non-collision roadside risks and alert drivers based on their eye movements. Specifically, the system combines video processing algorithms and LLMs to identify potentially risky road users. These risks are dynamically indicated on an adaptive heads-up display interface to enhance drivers' attention. A user study with 41 drivers confirms that Visionary Co-Driver improves drivers' risk perception and supports their recognition of roadside risks.

EFKAN: A KAN-Integrated Neural Operator For Efficient Magnetotelluric Forward Modeling

Magnetotelluric (MT) forward modeling is fundamental for improving the accuracy and efficiency of MT inversion. Neural operators (NOs) have been effectively used for rapid MT forward modeling, demonstrating their promising performance in solving the MT forward modeling-related partial differential equations (PDEs). Particularly, they can obtain the electromagnetic field at arbitrary locations and frequencies. In these NOs, the projection layers have been dominated by multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs), which may potentially reduce the accuracy of solution due to they usually suffer from the disadvantages of MLPs, such as lack of interpretability, overfitting, and so on. Therefore, to improve the accuracy of MT forward modeling with NOs and explore the potential alternatives to MLPs, we propose a novel neural operator by extending the Fourier neural operator (FNO) with Kolmogorov-Arnold network (EFKAN). Within the EFKAN framework, the FNO serves as the branch network to calculate the apparent resistivity and phase from the resistivity model in the frequency domain. Meanwhile, the KAN acts as the trunk network to project the resistivity and phase, determined by the FNO, to the desired locations and frequencies. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method not only achieves higher accuracy in obtaining apparent resistivity and phase compared to the NO equipped with MLPs at the desired frequencies and locations but also outperforms traditional numerical methods in terms of computational speed.

Ultrasensitive piezoelectric sensor based on two-dimensional Na2Cl crystals with periodic atom vacancies

Pursuing ultrasensitivity of pressure sensors has been a long-standing goal. Here, we report a piezoelectric sensor that exhibits supreme pressure-sensing performance, including a peak sensitivity up to 3.5*10^6 kPa^-1 in the pressure range of 1-100 mPa and a detection limit of less than 1 mPa, superior to the current state-of-the-art pressure sensors. These properties are attributed to the high percentage of periodic atom vacancies in the two-dimensional Na2Cl crystals formed within multilayered graphene oxide membrane in the sensor, which provides giant polarization with high stability. The sensor can even clearly detect the airflow fluctuations surrounding a flapping butterfly, which have long been the elusive tiny signals in the famous "butterfly effect". The finding represents a step towards next-generation pressure sensors for various precision applications.

A Knowledge-Driven Cross-view Contrastive Learning for EEG Representation

Due to the abundant neurophysiological information in the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal, EEG signals integrated with deep learning methods have gained substantial traction across numerous real-world tasks. However, the development of supervised learning methods based on EEG signals has been hindered by the high cost and significant label discrepancies to manually label large-scale EEG datasets. Self-supervised frameworks are adopted in vision and language fields to solve this issue, but the lack of EEG-specific theoretical foundations hampers their applicability across various tasks. To solve these challenges, this paper proposes a knowledge-driven cross-view contrastive learning framework (KDC2), which integrates neurological theory to extract effective representations from EEG with limited labels. The KDC2 method creates scalp and neural views of EEG signals, simulating the internal and external representation of brain activity. Sequentially, inter-view and cross-view contrastive learning pipelines in combination with various augmentation methods are applied to capture neural features from different views. By modeling prior neural knowledge based on homologous neural information consistency theory, the proposed method extracts invariant and complementary neural knowledge to generate combined representations. Experimental results on different downstream tasks demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods, highlighting the superior generalization of neural knowledge-supported EEG representations across various brain tasks.

Enhanced contact angle hysteresis of salt aqueous solution on graphite surface by a tiny amount of cation

We experimentally observed the enhanced contact angle hysteresis (CAH) of dilute aqueous salt solution on graphite surface, i.e., 40.6$^\circ$, 34.6$^\circ$, and 27.8$^\circ$, for LiCl, NaCl, and KCl, indicating the effective tuning of the CAHs by cations. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the preferential adsorption of cations on the HOPG surface due to the cation-π interaction pins the water at the backward liquid-gas-solid interfaces, reducing the receding contact angle and hence enhancing the CAH. This finding provides a simple method to control the contact angle and the CAH of aqueous drops on graphitic surfaces such as graphene, carbon nanotube, biomolecules, and airborne pollutants.

Corner singularity and its application in regular parameters optimization: technique renovation for Grad-Shafranov reconstruction

Further studies on the corner singularity of GS reconstruction are are compiled in this paper. It's focused on solution of the Data Completion (DC) problem with the Extended Hilbert Transform (EHT) over plane rectangular region. Optimal selections of the regular parameters in{\it Tikhonov} solution of corresponding DC problem are developed in this study. The 6-parameter regular solutions and the {\it Jacobian} matrix and one {\it Hessian} tensor to the regular parameters are derived in this work. A concise formula for EHT in the near field of corners, which shows property for EHT near the corner, are also provided. It serves as the additional constraints for our parameter optimization problem (OP). Third, a nonlinear convex function defined by the regular solution and the corner constraints is introduced and is taken as the object function for the OP of the 6 regular parameters on half-space $(\mathbf{p}>0)$. Given an initial guess of $\mathbf{p}_0$, the optimal parameters are solved from the OP through a well known constrained nonlinear optimization method. Last, the benchmark tests to the proposed solution approach are carried out, and detailed results from totally 9 different bench-cases are tabulated. In contrast to solutions with given regular parameters, our bench results demonstrate that an objective way for selection of the optimal $\mathbf{p}$ is successfully laid out here. Robustness and efficiency of the suggested new approach are also highlighted in this study.

Consecutive Insulator-Metal-Insulator Phase Transitions of Vanadium Dioxide by Hydrogen Doping

We report modulation of a reversible phase transition in VO2 films by hydrogen doping. A metallic phase and a new insulating phase are successively observed at room temperature as the doping concentration increases. It is suggested that the polarized charges from doped hydrogens play an important role. These charges gradually occupy V3d-O2p hybridized orbitals and consequently modulate the filling of the VO2 crystal conduction band-edge states, which eventually evolve into new valence band-edge states. This demonstrates the exceptional sensitivity of VO2 electronic properties to electron concentration and orbital occupancy, providing key information for the phase transition mechanism.
