Short-wave infrared broadband up-conversion imaging by using a noncritical phase matched bulk KTiOPO$_4$ crystal

Compared to cryogenically cooled conventional detectors, up-conversion detection enables efficient room-temperature short-wave infrared (SWIR) imaging. Although quasi-phase-matching (QPM) in periodically poled crystals offers advantages, the small crystal aperture (typically 1 mm$\times$3 mm) limits resolution. Non-poled crystals enable larger apertures but suffer walk-off aberrations. This work overcomes these limitations by using a noncritical phase matched (NCPM) KTiOPO$_4$ crystal (6 mm$\times$7 mm aperture, 0.5 mm length). Results show resolutions 6$\times$ and 2$\times$ higher than periodically poled crystals in orthogonal directions, with broad conversion band (1.3-2.2 $\mu$m) covering biological and atmospheric windows. The absence of walk-off ensures better image fidelity in up-conversion process. This study presents the first comprehensive characterization of NCPM-based broadband up-conversion imaging, demonstrating performance at the theoretical resolution limit while circumventing drawbacks inherent in alternative up-conversion schemes and conventional detectors.

Creating multi-beam interference from two-beam interference with assistant of harmonics generation

Linear optics-based multi-beam interference (MBI), like the Fabry-Perot interferometer, plays an important role in precision optical metrology applications such as laser stabilization in optical clocks, precision spectroscopy, and gravitational wave detection. Here, we propose and experimentally verify a nonlinear optics-based MBI principle with the assistance of cascading and recycling harmonics generation of two-beam interference. By cascading and recycling the harmonics processes, in combining with optical power amplification (OPA) to compensate for power losses arising from limited nonlinear conversion efficiency, a total 16th harmonic is achieved, and the observed interference fringes gradually evolve from a sinusoidal curve to a Lorentz-like curve. In principle, there is no limitation on the number of cascading and recycling nonlinear processes with the assistance of OPAs and sharp interference fringes, analogous to those in a high-finesse cavity, can be obtained. The nonlinear optics-based MBI mechanism revealed here will find promising applications in precision optical metrology.

Increasing two-photon entangled dimensions by shaping input beam profiles

Photon pair entangled in high dimensional orbital angular momentum (OAM) degree of freedom (DOF) has been widely regarded as a possible source in improving the capacity of quantum information processing. The need for the generation of a high dimensional maximally entangled state in the OAM DOF is therefore much desired. In this work, we demonstrate a simple method to generate a broader and flatter OAM spectrum, i.e. a larger spiral bandwidth (SB), of entangled photon pairs generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion by modifying the pump beam profile. By investigating both experimentally and theoretically, we have found that an exponential pump profile that is roughly the inverse of the mode profiles of the single-mode fibers used for OAM detection will provide a much larger SB when compared to a Gaussian shaped pump.

A high-dimensional quantum frequency converter

In high dimensional quantum communication networks, quantum frequency convertor (QFC) is indispensable as an interface in the frequency domain. For example, many QFCs have been built to link atomic memories and fiber channels. However, almost all of QFCs work in a two-dimensional space. It is still a pivotal challenge to construct a high-quality QFC for some complex quantum states, e.g., a high dimensional single-photon state that refers to a qudit. Here, we firstly propose a high-dimensional QFC for an orbital angular momentum qudit via sum frequency conversion with a flat top beam pump. As a proof-of-principle demonstration, we realize quantum frequency conversions for a qudit from infrared to visible range. Based on the qudit quantum state tomography, the fidelities of converted state are 98.29(95.02)\%, 97.42(91.74)\%, and 86.75(67.04)\% for a qudit without (with) dark counts in 2,3, and 5 dimensions, respectively. The demonstration is very promising for constructing a high capacity quantum communication network.

Multiplexing heralded single-photon in orbital angular momentum space

Heralded single-photon source (HSPS) with competitive single photon purity and indistinguishability has become an essential resource for photonic quantum information processing. Here, for the first time, we proposed a theoretical regime to enhance heralded single-photons generation by multiplexing the degree of the freedom of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of down-converted entangled photon pairs emitted from a nonlinear crystal. Experimentally, a proof-of-principle experiment has been performed through multiplexing three OAM modes. We achieve a 47$\%$ enhancement in single photon rate. A second-order autocorrelation function $g^{(2)}(0)<0.5$ ensures our multiplexed heralded single photons with good single photon purity. We further indicate that an OAM-multiplexed HSPS with high quality can be constructed by generating higher dimensional entangled state and sorting them with high efficiency in OAM space. Our avenue may approach a good HSPS with the deterministic property.

Efficient 525nm laser generation in single or double resonant cavity

This paper reports the results of a study into highly efficient sum frequency generation from 792 and 1556 nm wavelength light to 525 nm wavelength light using either a single or double resonant ring cavity based on a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate crystal (PPKTP). By optimizing the cavity$'$s parameters, the maximum power achieved for the resultant 525 nm laser was 263 and 373 mW for the single and double resonant cavity, respectively. The corresponding quantum conversion efficiencies were 8 and 77\% for converting 1556 nm photons to 525 nm photons with the single and double resonant cavity, respectively. The measured intra-cavity single pass conversion efficiency for both configurations was about 5\%. The performances of the sum frequency generation in these two configurations were studied and compared in detail. This work will provide guidelines for optimizing the generation of sum frequency generated laser light for a variety of configurations. The high conversion efficiency achieved in this work will help pave the way for frequency up-conversion of non-classical quantum states, such as the squeezed vacuum and single photon states. The proposed green laser source will be used in our future experiments, which includes a plan to generate two-colour entangled photon pairs and achieve the frequency down-conversion of single photons carrying orbital angular momentum.
