TWIGMA: A dataset of AI-Generated Images with Metadata From Twitter

Recent progress in generative artificial intelligence (gen-AI) has enabled the generation of photo-realistic and artistically-inspiring photos at a single click, catering to millions of users online. To explore how people use gen-AI models such as DALLE and StableDiffusion, it is critical to understand the themes, contents, and variations present in the AI-generated photos. In this work, we introduce TWIGMA (TWItter Generative-ai images with MetadatA), a comprehensive dataset encompassing over 800,000 gen-AI images collected from Jan 2021 to March 2023 on Twitter, with associated metadata (e.g., tweet text, creation date, number of likes), available at https://zenodo.org/records/8031785. Through a comparative analysis of TWIGMA with natural images and human artwork, we find that gen-AI images possess distinctive characteristics and exhibit, on average, lower variability when compared to their non-gen-AI counterparts. Additionally, we find that the similarity between a gen-AI image and natural images is inversely correlated with the number of likes. Finally, we observe a longitudinal shift in the themes of AI-generated images on Twitter, with users increasingly sharing artistically sophisticated content such as intricate human portraits, whereas their interest in simple subjects such as natural scenes and animals has decreased. Our findings underscore the significance of TWIGMA as a unique data resource for studying AI-generated images.

Enhancing Your Trained DETRs with Box Refinement

We present a conceptually simple, efficient, and general framework for localization problems in DETR-like models. We add plugins to well-trained models instead of inefficiently designing new models and training them from scratch. The method, called RefineBox, refines the outputs of DETR-like detectors by lightweight refinement networks. RefineBox is easy to implement and train as it only leverages the features and predicted boxes from the well-trained detection models. Our method is also efficient as we freeze the trained detectors during training. In addition, we can easily generalize RefineBox to various trained detection models without any modification. We conduct experiments on COCO and LVIS $1.0$. Experimental results indicate the effectiveness of our RefineBox for DETR and its representative variants (Figure 1). For example, the performance gains for DETR, Conditinal-DETR, DAB-DETR, and DN-DETR are 2.4 AP, 2.5 AP, 1.9 AP, and 1.6 AP, respectively. We hope our work will bring the attention of the detection community to the localization bottleneck of current DETR-like models and highlight the potential of the RefineBox framework. Code and models will be publicly available at: \href{https://github.com/YiqunChen1999/RefineBox}{https://github.com/YiqunChen1999/RefineBox}.

Quantifying the risk of workplace COVID-19 clusters in terms of commuter, workplace, and population characteristics

Objectives: To identify and quantify risk factors that contribute to clusters of COVID-19 in the workplace. Methods: We identified clusters of COVID-19 cases in the workplace and investigated the characteristics of the individuals, the workplaces, the areas they work, and the methods of commute to work, through data linkages based on Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs) in England between 20/06/2021 and 20/02/2022. We estimated associations between potential risk factors and workplace clusters, adjusting for plausible confounders identified using a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). Results: For most industries, increased physical proximity in the workplace was associated with increased risk of COVID-19 clusters, while increased vaccination was associated with reduced risk. Commuter demographic risk factors varied across industry, but for the majority of industries, a higher proportion of black/african/caribbean ethnicities, and living in deprived areas, was associated with increased cluster risk. A higher proportion of commuters in the 60-64 age group was associated with reduced cluster risk. There were significant associations between gender, work commute methods, and staff contract type with cluster risk, but these were highly variable across industries. Conclusions: This study has used novel national data linkages to identify potential risk factors of workplace COVID-19 clusters, including possible protective effects of vaccination and increased physical distance at work. The same methodological approach can be applied to wider occupational and environmental health research.

Transformer in Transformer as Backbone for Deep Reinforcement Learning

Designing better deep networks and better reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms are both important for deep RL. This work focuses on the former. Previous methods build the network with several modules like CNN, LSTM and Attention. Recent methods combine the Transformer with these modules for better performance. However, it requires tedious optimization skills to train a network composed of mixed modules, making these methods inconvenient to be used in practice. In this paper, we propose to design \emph{pure Transformer-based networks} for deep RL, aiming at providing off-the-shelf backbones for both the online and offline settings. Specifically, the Transformer in Transformer (TIT) backbone is proposed, which cascades two Transformers in a very natural way: the inner one is used to process a single observation, while the outer one is responsible for processing the observation history; combining both is expected to extract spatial-temporal representations for good decision-making. Experiments show that TIT can achieve satisfactory performance in different settings consistently.

DATE: Dual Assignment for End-to-End Fully Convolutional Object Detection

Fully convolutional detectors discard the one-to-many assignment and adopt a one-to-one assigning strategy to achieve end-to-end detection but suffer from the slow convergence issue. In this paper, we revisit these two assignment methods and find that bringing one-to-many assignment back to end-to-end fully convolutional detectors helps with model convergence. Based on this observation, we propose {\em \textbf{D}ual \textbf{A}ssignment} for end-to-end fully convolutional de\textbf{TE}ction (DATE). Our method constructs two branches with one-to-many and one-to-one assignment during training and speeds up the convergence of the one-to-one assignment branch by providing more supervision signals. DATE only uses the branch with the one-to-one matching strategy for model inference, which doesn't bring inference overhead. Experimental results show that Dual Assignment gives nontrivial improvements and speeds up model convergence upon OneNet and DeFCN. Code: https://github.com/YiqunChen1999/date.

Boundedness of Calderón--Zygmund operators on ball Campanato-type function spaces

Let $X$ be a ball quasi-Banach function space on ${\mathbb R}^n$ satisfying some mild assumptions. In this article, the authors first find a reasonable version $\widetilde{T}$ of the Calderón--Zygmund operator $T$ on the ball Campanato-type function space $\mathcal{L}_{X,q,s,d}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ with $q\in[1,\infty)$, $s\in\mathbb{Z}_+^n$, and $d\in(0,\infty)$. Then the authors prove that $\widetilde{T}$ is bounded on $\mathcal{L}_{X,q,s,d}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ if and only if, for any $γ\in\mathbb{Z}^n_+$ with $|γ|\leq s$, $T^*(x^γ)=0$, which is hence sharp. Moreover, $\widetilde{T}$ is proved to be the adjoint operator of $T$, which further strengthens the rationality of the definition of $\widetilde{T}$. All these results have a wide range of applications. In particular, even when they are applied, respectively, to weighted Lebesgue spaces, variable Lebesgue spaces, Orlicz spaces, Orlicz-slice spaces, Morrey spaces, mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces, local generalized Herz spaces, and mixed-norm Herz spaces, all the obtained results are new. The proofs of these results strongly depend on the properties of the kernel of $T$ under consideration and also on the dual theorem on $\mathcal{L}_{X,q,s,d}(\mathbb{R}^n)$.

Improving Fine-tuning of Self-supervised Models with Contrastive Initialization

Self-supervised learning (SSL) has achieved remarkable performance in pretraining the models that can be further used in downstream tasks via fine-tuning. However, these self-supervised models may not capture meaningful semantic information since the images belonging to the same class are always regarded as negative pairs in the contrastive loss. Consequently, the images of the same class are often located far away from each other in learned feature space, which would inevitably hamper the fine-tuning process. To address this issue, we seek to provide a better initialization for the self-supervised models by enhancing the semantic information. To this end, we propose a Contrastive Initialization (COIN) method that breaks the standard fine-tuning pipeline by introducing an extra initialization stage before fine-tuning. Extensive experiments show that, with the enriched semantics, our COIN significantly outperforms existing methods without introducing extra training cost and sets new state-of-the-arts on multiple downstream tasks.

Boundedness of Fractional Integrals on Ball Campanato-Type Function Spaces

Let $X$ be a ball quasi-Banach function space on ${\mathbb R}^n$ satisfying some mild assumptions and let $α\in(0,n)$ and $β\in(1,\infty)$. In this article, when $α\in(0,1)$, the authors first find a reasonable version $\widetilde{I}_α$ of the fractional integral $I_α$ on the ball Campanato-type function space $\mathcal{L}_{X,q,s,d}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ with $q\in[1,\infty)$, $s\in\mathbb{Z}_+^n$, and $d\in(0,\infty)$. Then the authors prove that $\widetilde{I}_α$ is bounded from $\mathcal{L}_{X^β,q,s,d}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ to $\mathcal{L}_{X,q,s,d}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ if and only if there exists a positive constant $C$ such that, for any ball $B\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $|B|^{\fracα{n}}\leq C \|\mathbf{1}_B\|_X^{\frac{β-1}β}$, where $X^β$ denotes the $β$-convexification of $X$. Furthermore, the authors extend the range $α\in(0,1)$ in $\widetilde{I}_α$ to the range $α\in(0,n)$ and also obtain the corresponding boundedness in this case. Moreover, $\widetilde{I}_α$ is proved to be the adjoint operator of $I_α$. All these results have a wide range of applications. Particularly, even when they are applied, respectively, to Morrey spaces, mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces, local generalized Herz spaces, and mixed-norm Herz spaces, all the obtained results are new. The proofs of these results strongly depend on the dual theorem on $\mathcal{L}_{X,q,s,d}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and also on the special atomic decomposition of molecules of $H_X(\mathbb{R}^n)$ (the Hardy-type space associated with $X$) which proves the predual space of $\mathcal{L}_{X,q,s,d}(\mathbb{R}^n)$.

Boundedness of Fractional Integrals on Hardy Spaces Associated with Ball Quasi-Banach Function Spaces

Let $X$ be a ball quasi-Banach function space on ${\mathbb R}^n$ and $H_X({\mathbb R}^n)$ the Hardy space associated with $X$, and let $α\in(0,n)$ and $β\in(1,\infty)$. In this article, assuming that the (powered) Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator satisfies the Fefferman--Stein vector-valued maximal inequality on $X$ and is bounded on the associate space of $X$, the authors prove that the fractional integral $I_α$ can be extended to a bounded linear operator from $H_X({\mathbb R}^n)$ to $H_{X^β}({\mathbb R}^n)$ if and only if there exists a positive constant $C$ such that, for any ball $B\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $|B|^{\fracα{n}}\leq C \|\mathbf{1}_B\|_X^{\frac{β-1}β}$, where $X^β$ denotes the $β$-convexification of $X$. Moreover, under some different reasonable assumptions on both $X$ and another ball quasi-Banach function space $Y$, the authors also consider the mapping property of $I_α$ from $H_X({\mathbb R}^n)$ to $H_Y({\mathbb R}^n)$ via using the extrapolation theorem. All these results have a wide range of applications. Particularly, when these are applied, respectively, to Morrey spaces, mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces, local generalized Herz spaces, and mixed-norm Herz spaces, all these results are new. The proofs of these theorems strongly depend on atomic and molecular characterizations of $H_X({\mathbb R}^n)$.

Semi-Supervised Record Linkage for Construction of Large-Scale Sociocentric Networks in Resource-limited Settings: An application to the SEARCH Study in Rural Uganda and Kenya

This paper presents a novel semi-supervised algorithmic approach to creating large scale sociocentric networks in rural East Africa. We describe the construction of 32 large-scale sociocentric social networks in rural Sub-Saharan Africa. Networks were constructed by applying a semi-supervised record-linkage algorithm to data from census-enumerated residents of the 32 communities included in the SEARCH study (NCT01864603), a community-cluster randomized HIV prevention trial in Uganda and Kenya. Contacts were solicited using a five question name generator in the domains of emotional support, food sharing, free time, health issues and money issues. The fully constructed networks include 170; 028 nodes and 362; 965 edges aggregated across communities (ranging from 4449 to 6829 nodes and from 2349 to 31,779 edges per community). Our algorithm matched on average 30% of named contacts in Kenyan communities and 50% of named contacts in Ugandan communities to residents named in census enumeration. Assortative mixing measures for eight different covariates reveal that residents in the network have a very strong tendency to associate with others who are similar to them in age, sex, and especially village. The networks in the SEARCH Study will provide a platform for improved understanding of health outcomes in rural East Africa. The network construction algorithm we present may facilitate future social network research in resource-limited settings.
