Goal-Oriented Learning at the Edge: Graph Neural Networks Over-the-Air for Blockage Prediction

Sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks evolve from connecting devices to connecting intelligence. The focus turns to Goal-Oriented Communications, where the effectiveness of communication is assessed through task-level objectives over traditional throughput-centric metrics. As communication intertwines with learning at the edge, distributed inference over wireless networks faces a critical trade-off between task accuracy and efficient radio resource use. Traditional communication schemes (e.g., OFDMA) are not designed for this trade-off, often facing challenges related to scalability and latency. Therefore, we propose a novel goal-oriented framework that integrates over-the-air computation with spatio-temporal graph learning. Leveraging the wireless channel as an analog aggregation layer, the proposed framework enables low-latency message passing while efficiently aggregating semantically relevant features from distributed nodes. Theoretical analysis confirms that our analog architecture converges to the expressive power of digital message passing, while offering decisive scalability advantages. We assess the framework in proactive line-of-sight blockage prediction for millimeter-wave networks. Through high-fidelity ray-tracing simulations, the framework exhibits strong inductive generalization to unseen networks and adapts to domain shifts via lightweight transfer learning, matching or even outperforming digital baselines with significantly reduced communication overhead.

Dissecting the Dental Lung Cancer Axis via Mendelian Randomization and Mediation Analysis

Periodontitis and dental caries are common oral diseases affecting billions globally. While observational studies suggest links between these conditions and lung cancer, causality remains uncertain. This study used two sample Mendelian randomization (MR) to explore causal relationships between dental traits (periodontitis, dental caries) and lung cancer subtypes, and to assess mediation by pulmonary function. Genetic instruments were derived from the largest available genome wide association studies, including data from 487,823 dental caries and 506,594 periodontitis cases, as well as lung cancer data from the Transdisciplinary Research of Cancer in Lung consortium. Inverse variance weighting was the main analytical method; lung function mediation was assessed using the delta method. The results showed a significant positive causal effect of dental caries on overall lung cancer and its subtypes. Specifically, a one standard deviation increase in dental caries incidence was associated with a 188.0% higher risk of squamous cell lung carcinoma (OR = 2.880, 95% CI = 1.236--6.713, p = 0.014), partially mediated by declines in forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), accounting for 5.124% and 5.890% of the total effect. No causal effect was found for periodontitis. These findings highlight a causal role of dental caries in lung cancer risk and support integrating dental care and pulmonary function monitoring into cancer prevention strategies.

Coexistence of Real-Time Source Reconstruction and Broadband Services Over Wireless Networks

Achieving a flexible and efficient sharing of wireless resources among a wide range of novel applications and services is one of the major goals of the sixth-generation of mobile systems (6G). Accordingly, this work investigates the performance of a real-time system that coexists with a broadband service in a frame-based wireless channel. Specifically, we consider real-time remote tracking of an information source, where a device monitors its evolution and sends updates to a base station (BS), which is responsible for real-time source reconstruction and, potentially, remote actuation. To achieve this, the BS employs a grant-free access mechanism to serve the monitoring device together with a broadband user, which share the available wireless resources through orthogonal or non-orthogonal multiple access schemes. We analyse the performance of the system with time-averaged reconstruction error, time-averaged cost of actuation error, and update-delivery cost as performance metrics. Furthermore, we analyse the performance of the broadband user in terms of throughput and energy efficiency. Our results show that an orthogonal resource sharing between the users is beneficial in most cases where the broadband user requires maximum throughput. However, sharing the resources in a non-orthogonal manner leads to a far greater energy efficiency.

Learning to Communicate with Intent: An Introduction

We propose a novel framework to learn how to communicate with intent, i.e., to transmit messages over a wireless communication channel based on the end-goal of the communication. This stays in stark contrast to classical communication systems where the objective is to reproduce at the receiver side either exactly or approximately the message sent by the transmitter, regardless of the end-goal. Our procedure is general enough that can be adapted to any type of goal or task, so long as the said task is a (almost-everywhere) differentiable function over which gradients can be propagated. We focus on supervised learning and reinforcement learning (RL) tasks, and propose algorithms to learn the communication system and the task jointly in an end-to-end manner. We then delve deeper into the transmission of images and propose two systems, one for the classification of images and a second one to play an Atari game based on RL. The performance is compared with a joint source and channel coding (JSCC) communication system designed to minimize the reconstruction error of messages at the receiver side, and results show overall great improvement. Further, for the RL task, we show that while a JSCC strategy is not better than a random action selection strategy even at high SNRs, with our approach we get close to the upper bound even for low SNRs.

Deep Learning Based Equalizer for MIMO-OFDM Systems with Insufficient Cyclic Prefix

In this paper, we study the equalization design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with insufficient cyclic prefix (CP). In particular, the signal detection performance is severely impaired by inter-carrier interference (ICI) and inter-symbol interference (ISI) when the multipath delay spread exceeding the length of CP. To tackle this problem, a deep learning-based equalizer is proposed for approximating the maximum likelihood detection. Inspired by the dependency between the adjacent subcarriers, a computationally efficient joint detection scheme is developed. Employing the proposed equalizer, an iterative receiver is also constructed and the detection performance is evaluated through simulations over measured multipath channels. Our results reveal that the proposed receiver can achieve significant performance improvement compared to two traditional baseline schemes.

A Universal Receiver for Uplink NOMA Systems

Given its capability in efficient radio resource sharing, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been identified as a promising technology in 5G to improve the system capacity, user connectivity, and scheduling latency. A dozen of uplink NOMA schemes have been proposed recently and this paper considers the design of a universal receiver suitable for all potential designs of NOMA schemes. Firstly, a general turbo-like iterative receiver structure is introduced, under which, a universal expectation propagation algorithm (EPA) detector with hybrid parallel interference cancellation (PIC) is proposed (EPA in short). Link-level simulations show that the proposed EPA receiver can achieve superior block error rate (BLER) performance with implementation friendly complexity and fast convergence, and is always better than the traditional codeword level MMSE-PIC receiver for various kinds of NOMA schemes.

Turbo-like Iterative Multi-user Receiver Design for 5G Non-orthogonal Multiple Access

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NoMA) as an efficient way of radio resource sharing has been identified as a promising technology in 5G to help improving system capacity, user connectivity, and service latency in 5G communications. This paper provides a brief overview of the progress of NoMA transceiver study in 3GPP, with special focus on the design of turbo-like iterative multi-user (MU) receivers. There are various types of MU receivers depending on the combinations of MU detectors and interference cancellation (IC) schemes. Link-level simulations show that expectation propagation algorithm (EPA) with hybrid parallel interference cancellation (PIC) is a promising MU receiver, which can achieve fast convergence and similar performance as message passing algorithm (MPA) with much lower complexity.

Towards the Standardization of Non-orthogonal Multiple Access for Next Generation Wireless Networks

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NoMA) as an efficient way of radio resource sharing can root back to the network information theory. For generations of wireless communication systems design, orthogonal multiple access (OMA) schemes in time, frequency, or code domain have been the main choices due to the limited processing capability in the transceiver hardware, as well as the modest traffic demands in both latency and connectivity. However, for the next generation radio systems, given its vision to connect everything and the much evolved hardware capability, NoMA has been identified as a promising technology to help achieve all the targets in system capacity, user connectivity, and service latency. This article will provide a systematic overview of the state-of-the-art design of the NoMA transmission based on a unified transceiver design framework, the related standardization progress, and some promising use cases in future cellular networks, based on which the interested researchers can get a quick start in this area.

Low Complexity Receiver for Uplink SCMA System via Expectation Propagation

Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) scheme is considered to be one promising non-orthogonal multiple access technology for the future fifth generation (5G) communications. Due to the sparse nature, message passing algorithm (MPA) has been used as the receiver to achieve close to maximum likelihood (ML) detection performance with much lower complexity. However, the complexity order of MPA is still exponential with the size of codebook and the degree of signal superposition on a given resource element. In this paper, we propose a novel low complexity iterative receiver based on expectation propagation algorithm (EPA), which reduces the complexity order from exponential to linear. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed EPA receiver achieves nearly the same block error rate (BLER) performance as the conventional message passing algorithm (MPA) receiver with orders less complexity.

Femtosecond Laser-induced Crystallization of Amorphous Sb2Te3 film and Coherent Phonon Spectroscopy Characterization and Optical Injection of Electron Spins

A femtosecond laser-irradiated crystallizing technique is tried to convert amorphous Sb2Te3 film into crystalline film. Sensitive coherent phonon spectroscopy (CPS) is used to monitor the crystallization of amorphous Sb2Te3 film at the original irradiation site. The CPS reveals that the vibration strength of two phonon modes that correspond to the characteristic phonon modes of crystalline Sb2Te3, enhances with increasing laser irradiation fluence (LIF), showing the rise of the degree of crystallization with LIF and that femtosecond laser irradiation is a good post-treatment technique. Time-resolved circularly polarized pump-probe spectroscopy is used to investigate electron spin relaxation dynamics of the laser-induced crystallized Sb2Te3 film. Spin relaxation process indeed is observed, confirming the theoretical predictions on the validity of spin-dependent optical transition selection rule and the feasibility of transient spin-grating-based optical detection scheme of spin-plasmon collective modes in Sb2Te3-like topological insulators.
