Inverse problems for quadratic derivative nonlinear wave equations

For semilinear wave equations on Lorentzian manifolds with quadratic derivative non-linear terms, we study the inverse problem of determining the background Lorentzian metric. Under some conditions on the nonlinear term, we show that from the source-to-solution map, one can determine the Lorentzian metric up to diffeomorphisms.

Reducing Streaking Artifacts in Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping

It is well-known that reconstruction algorithms in quantitative susceptibility mapping often contain streaking artifacts. In [1], the cause of the artifacts is identified as propagation of singularities. In this work, we analyze such singularities carefully and propose some strategies to reduce the artifacts.

The scattering operator on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds

We obtain a formula for the Schwartz kernel of the scattering operator in terms of the Schwartz kernel of the fundamental solution of the wave operator on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. If there are no trapped geodesics, this formula is used to show that the scattering operator is a Fourier integral operator that quantizes the scattering relation.

Galaxy-Galaxy Weak Lensing Measurements from SDSS: I. Image Processing and Lensing signals

As the first paper in a series on the study of the galaxy-galaxy lensing from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7), we present our image processing pipeline that corrects the systematics primarily introduced by the Point Spread Function (PSF). Using this pipeline, we processed SDSS DR7 imaging data in $r$ band and generated a background galaxy catalog containing the shape information of each galaxy. Based on our own shape measurements of the galaxy images from SDSS DR7, we extract the galaxy-galaxy (GG) lensing signals around foreground spectroscopic galaxies binned in different luminosity and stellar mass. The overall signals are in good agreement with those obtained by \citet{Mandelbaum2005, Mandelbaum2006} from the SDSS DR4. The results in this paper with higher signal to noise ratio is due to the larger survey area than SDSS DR4, confirm that more luminous/massive galaxies bear stronger GG lensing signal. We also divide the foreground galaxies into red/blue and star forming/quenched subsamples and measured their GG lensing signals, respectively. We find that, at a specific stellar mass/luminosity, the red/quenched galaxies have relatively stronger GG lensing signals than their counterparts especially at large radii. These GG lensing signals can be used to probe the galaxy-halo mass relations and their environmental dependences in the halo occupation or conditional luminosity function framework.

Inverse problems for semilinear wave equations on Lorentzian manifolds

We consider inverse problems in space-time $(M, g)$, a $4$-dimensional Lorentzian manifold. For semilinear wave equations $\square_g u + H(x, u) = f$, where $\square_g$ denotes the usual Laplace-Beltrami operator, we prove that the source-to-solution map $L: f \rightarrow u|_V$, where $V$ is a neighborhood of a time-like geodesic $μ$, determines the topological, differentiable structure and the conformal class of the metric of the space-time in the maximal set where waves can propagate from $μ$ and return back. Moreover, on a given space-time $(M, g)$, the source-to-solution map determines some coefficients of the Taylor expansion of $H$ in $u$.

High Energy Resolvent Estimates on Conformally Compact Manifolds with Variable Curvature at Infinity

We construct a semiclassical parametrix for the resolvent of the Laplacian acing on functions on non-trapping conformally compact manifolds with variable sectional curvature at infinity, we use it to prove high energy resolvent estimates and to show existence of resonance free strips of arbitrary height away from the imaginary axis. We then use the results of Datchev and Vasy on gluing semiclassical resolvent estimates to extend these results to conformally compact manifolds with normal hyperbolic trapping.

Resolvent and Radiation Fields on Non-trapping Asymptotically Hyperbolic Manifolds

We construct a semi-classical parametrix for the Laplacian on non-trapping asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds, which generalizes the construction of Melrose, Sa Barreto and Vasy. As applications, we obtain high energy resolvent estimates and resonance free strips. Also, we prove that the Friedlander radiation field decays exponentially for initial data in proper spaces.

On the Clustering of Compact Galaxy Pairs in Dark Matter Haloes

We analyze the clustering of photometrically selected galaxy pairs by using the halo-occupation distribution (HOD) model. We measure the angular two-point auto-correlation function, $ω(θ)$, for galaxies and galaxy pairs in three volume-limited samples and develop an HOD to model their clustering. Our results are successfully fit by these HOD models, and we see the separation of "1-halo" and "2-halo" clustering terms for both single galaxies and galaxy pairs. Our clustering measurements and HOD model fits for the single galaxy samples are consistent with previous results. We find that the galaxy pairs generally have larger clustering amplitudes than single galaxies, and the quantities computed during the HOD fitting, e.g., effective halo mass, $M_{eff}$, and linear bias, $b_{g}$, are also larger for galaxy pairs. We find that the central fractions for galaxy pairs are significantly higher than single galaxies, which confirms that galaxy pairs are formed at the center of more massive dark matter haloes. We also model the clustering dependence of the galaxy pair correlation function on redshift, galaxy type, and luminosity. We find early-early pairs (bright galaxy pairs) cluster more strongly than late-late pairs (dim galaxy pairs), and that the clustering does not depend on the luminosity contrast between the two galaxies in the compact group.
