RadOnc-GPT: A Large Language Model for Radiation Oncology

This paper presents RadOnc-GPT, a large language model specialized for radiation oncology through advanced tuning methods. RadOnc-GPT was finetuned on a large dataset of radiation oncology patient records from the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. The model employs instruction tuning on three key tasks - generating radiotherapy treatment regimens, determining optimal radiation modalities, and providing diagnostic descriptions/ICD codes based on patient diagnostic details. Evaluations conducted by comparing RadOnc-GPT outputs to general large language model outputs showed higher ROUGE scores in these three tasks. The study demonstrated the potential of using large language models fine-tuned using domain-specific knowledge like RadOnc-GPT to achieve transformational capabilities in highly specialized healthcare fields such as radiation oncology. However, our model's clinical relevance requires confirmation, and it specializes in only the aforementioned three specific tasks and lacks broader applicability. Furthermore, its evaluation through ROUGE scores might not reflect the true semantic and clinical accuracy - challenges we intend to address in future research.

Differentially Private Federated Clustering over Non-IID Data

In this paper, we investigate federated clustering (FedC) problem, that aims to accurately partition unlabeled data samples distributed over massive clients into finite clusters under the orchestration of a parameter server, meanwhile considering data privacy. Though it is an NP-hard optimization problem involving real variables denoting cluster centroids and binary variables denoting the cluster membership of each data sample, we judiciously reformulate the FedC problem into a non-convex optimization problem with only one convex constraint, accordingly yielding a soft clustering solution. Then a novel FedC algorithm using differential privacy (DP) technique, referred to as DP-FedC, is proposed in which partial clients participation and multiple local model updating steps are also considered. Furthermore, various attributes of the proposed DP-FedC are obtained through theoretical analyses of privacy protection and convergence rate, especially for the case of non-identically and independently distributed (non-i.i.d.) data, that ideally serve as the guidelines for the design of the proposed DP-FedC. Then some experimental results on two real datasets are provided to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed DP-FedC together with its much superior performance over some state-of-the-art FedC algorithms, and the consistency with all the presented analytical results.

ChatRadio-Valuer: A Chat Large Language Model for Generalizable Radiology Report Generation Based on Multi-institution and Multi-system Data

Radiology report generation, as a key step in medical image analysis, is critical to the quantitative analysis of clinically informed decision-making levels. However, complex and diverse radiology reports with cross-source heterogeneity pose a huge generalizability challenge to the current methods under massive data volume, mainly because the style and normativity of radiology reports are obviously distinctive among institutions, body regions inspected and radiologists. Recently, the advent of large language models (LLM) offers great potential for recognizing signs of health conditions. To resolve the above problem, we collaborate with the Second Xiangya Hospital in China and propose ChatRadio-Valuer based on the LLM, a tailored model for automatic radiology report generation that learns generalizable representations and provides a basis pattern for model adaptation in sophisticated analysts' cases. Specifically, ChatRadio-Valuer is trained based on the radiology reports from a single institution by means of supervised fine-tuning, and then adapted to disease diagnosis tasks for human multi-system evaluation (i.e., chest, abdomen, muscle-skeleton, head, and maxillofacial $\&$ neck) from six different institutions in clinical-level events. The clinical dataset utilized in this study encompasses a remarkable total of \textbf{332,673} observations. From the comprehensive results on engineering indicators, clinical efficacy and deployment cost metrics, it can be shown that ChatRadio-Valuer consistently outperforms state-of-the-art models, especially ChatGPT (GPT-3.5-Turbo) and GPT-4 et al., in terms of the diseases diagnosis from radiology reports. ChatRadio-Valuer provides an effective avenue to boost model generalization performance and alleviate the annotation workload of experts to enable the promotion of clinical AI applications in radiology reports.

PolicyGPT: Automated Analysis of Privacy Policies with Large Language Models

Privacy policies serve as the primary conduit through which online service providers inform users about their data collection and usage procedures. However, in a bid to be comprehensive and mitigate legal risks, these policy documents are often quite verbose. In practical use, users tend to click the Agree button directly rather than reading them carefully. This practice exposes users to risks of privacy leakage and legal issues. Recently, the advent of Large Language Models (LLM) such as ChatGPT and GPT-4 has opened new possibilities for text analysis, especially for lengthy documents like privacy policies. In this study, we investigate a privacy policy text analysis framework PolicyGPT based on the LLM. This framework was tested using two datasets. The first dataset comprises of privacy policies from 115 websites, which were meticulously annotated by legal experts, categorizing each segment into one of 10 classes. The second dataset consists of privacy policies from 304 popular mobile applications, with each sentence manually annotated and classified into one of another 10 categories. Under zero-shot learning conditions, PolicyGPT demonstrated robust performance. For the first dataset, it achieved an accuracy rate of 97%, while for the second dataset, it attained an 87% accuracy rate, surpassing that of the baseline machine learning and neural network models.

Artificial General Intelligence for Radiation Oncology

The emergence of artificial general intelligence (AGI) is transforming radiation oncology. As prominent vanguards of AGI, large language models (LLMs) such as GPT-4 and PaLM 2 can process extensive texts and large vision models (LVMs) such as the Segment Anything Model (SAM) can process extensive imaging data to enhance the efficiency and precision of radiation therapy. This paper explores full-spectrum applications of AGI across radiation oncology including initial consultation, simulation, treatment planning, treatment delivery, treatment verification, and patient follow-up. The fusion of vision data with LLMs also creates powerful multimodal models that elucidate nuanced clinical patterns. Together, AGI promises to catalyze a shift towards data-driven, personalized radiation therapy. However, these models should complement human expertise and care. This paper provides an overview of how AGI can transform radiation oncology to elevate the standard of patient care in radiation oncology, with the key insight being AGI's ability to exploit multimodal clinical data at scale.

NewsDialogues: Towards Proactive News Grounded Conversation

Hot news is one of the most popular topics in daily conversations. However, news grounded conversation has long been stymied by the lack of well-designed task definition and scarce data. In this paper, we propose a novel task, Proactive News Grounded Conversation, in which a dialogue system can proactively lead the conversation based on some key topics of the news. In addition, both information-seeking and chit-chat scenarios are included realistically, where the user may ask a series of questions about the news details or express their opinions and be eager to chat. To further develop this novel task, we collect a human-to-human Chinese dialogue dataset \ts{NewsDialogues}, which includes 1K conversations with a total of 14.6K utterances and detailed annotations for target topics and knowledge spans. Furthermore, we propose a method named Predict-Generate-Rank, consisting of a generator for grounded knowledge prediction and response generation, and a ranker for the ranking of multiple responses to alleviate the exposure bias. We conduct comprehensive experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and further present several key findings and challenges to prompt future research.

Heterogeneous-Branch Collaborative Learning for Dialogue Generation

With the development of deep learning, advanced dialogue generation methods usually require a greater amount of computational resources. One promising approach to obtaining a high-performance and lightweight model is knowledge distillation, which relies heavily on the pre-trained powerful teacher. Collaborative learning, also known as online knowledge distillation, is an effective way to conduct one-stage group distillation in the absence of a well-trained large teacher model. However, previous work has a severe branch homogeneity problem due to the same training objective and the independent identical training sets. To alleviate this problem, we consider the dialogue attributes in the training of network branches. Each branch learns the attribute-related features based on the selected subset. Furthermore, we propose a dual group-based knowledge distillation method, consisting of positive distillation and negative distillation, to further diversify the features of different branches in a steadily and interpretable way. The proposed approach significantly improves branch heterogeneity and outperforms state-of-the-art collaborative learning methods on two widely used open-domain dialogue datasets.

Topology hierarchy of transition metal dichalcogenides built from quantum spin Hall layers

The evolution of the physical properties of two-dimensional material from monolayer limit to the bulk reveals unique consequences from dimension confinement and provides a distinct tuning knob for applications. Monolayer 1T'-phase transition metal dichalcogenides (1T'-TMDs) with ubiquitous quantum spin Hall (QSH) states are ideal two-dimensional building blocks of various three-dimensional topological phases. However, the stacking geometry was previously limited to the bulk 1T'-WTe2 type. Here, we introduce the novel 2M-TMDs consisting of translationally stacked 1T'-monolayers as promising material platforms with tunable inverted bandgaps and interlayer coupling. By performing advanced polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy as well as first-principles calculations on the electronic structure of 2M-TMDs, we revealed a topology hierarchy: 2M-WSe2, MoS2, and MoSe2 are weak topological insulators (WTIs), whereas 2M-WS2 is a strong topological insulator (STI). Further demonstration of topological phase transitions by tunning interlayer distance indicates that band inversion amplitude and interlayer coupling jointly determine different topological states in 2M-TMDs. We propose that 2M-TMDs are parent compounds of various exotic phases including topological superconductors and promise great application potentials in quantum electronics due to their flexibility in patterning with two-dimensional materials.

Record-high Mobility and Extreme Magnetoresistance on Kagome-lattice in Compensated Semimetal Ni3In2S2

The kagome-lattice crystal hosts various intriguing properties including the frustrated magnetism, charge order, topological state, superconductivity and correlated phenomena. To achieve high-performance kagome-lattice compounds for electronic and spintronic applications, careful tuning of the band structure would be desired. Here, the electronic structures of kagome-lattice crystal Ni3In2S2 were investigated by transport measurements, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy as well as ab initio calculations. The transport measurements reveal Ni3In2S2 as a compensated semimetal with record-high carrier mobility (~8683 cm2 V-1 S-1 and 7356 cm2 V-1 S-1 for holes and electrons) and extreme magnetoresistance (15518% at 2 K and 13 T) among kagome-lattice materials. These extraordinary properties are well explained by its band structure with indirect gap, small electron/hole pockets and large bandwidth of the 3d electrons of Ni on the kagome lattice. This work demonstrates that the crystal field and doping serve as the key tuning knobs to optimize the transport properties in kagome-lattice crystals. Our work provides material basis and optimization routes for kagome-lattice semimetals as electronics and spintronics applications.

Towards Diverse, Relevant and Coherent Open-Domain Dialogue Generation via Hybrid Latent Variables

Conditional variational models, using either continuous or discrete latent variables, are powerful for open-domain dialogue response generation. However, previous works show that continuous latent variables tend to reduce the coherence of generated responses. In this paper, we also found that discrete latent variables have difficulty capturing more diverse expressions. To tackle these problems, we combine the merits of both continuous and discrete latent variables and propose a Hybrid Latent Variable (HLV) method. Specifically, HLV constrains the global semantics of responses through discrete latent variables and enriches responses with continuous latent variables. Thus, we diversify the generated responses while maintaining relevance and coherence. In addition, we propose Conditional Hybrid Variational Transformer (CHVT) to construct and to utilize HLV with transformers for dialogue generation. Through fine-grained symbolic-level semantic information and additive Gaussian mixing, we construct the distribution of continuous variables, prompting the generation of diverse expressions. Meanwhile, to maintain the relevance and coherence, the discrete latent variable is optimized by self-separation training. Experimental results on two dialogue generation datasets (DailyDialog and Opensubtitles) show that CHVT is superior to traditional transformer-based variational mechanism w.r.t. diversity, relevance and coherence metrics. Moreover, we also demonstrate the benefit of applying HLV to fine-tuning two pre-trained dialogue models (PLATO and BART-base).

Modeling Complex Dialogue Mappings via Sentence Semantic Segmentation Guided Conditional Variational Auto-Encoder

Complex dialogue mappings (CDM), including one-to-many and many-to-one mappings, tend to make dialogue models generate incoherent or dull responses, and modeling these mappings remains a huge challenge for neural dialogue systems. To alleviate these problems, methods like introducing external information, reconstructing the optimization function, and manipulating data samples are proposed, while they primarily focus on avoiding training with CDM, inevitably weakening the model's ability of understanding CDM in human conversations and limiting further improvements in model performance. This paper proposes a Sentence Semantic \textbf{Seg}mentation guided \textbf{C}onditional \textbf{V}ariational \textbf{A}uto-\textbf{E}ncoder (SegCVAE) method which can model and take advantages of the CDM data. Specifically, to tackle the incoherent problem caused by one-to-many, SegCVAE uses response-related prominent semantics to constrained the latent variable. To mitigate the non-diverse problem brought by many-to-one, SegCVAE segments multiple prominent semantics to enrich the latent variables. Three novel components, Internal Separation, External Guidance, and Semantic Norms, are proposed to achieve SegCVAE. On dialogue generation tasks, both the automatic and human evaluation results show that SegCVAE achieves new state-of-the-art performance.

Observation of Coexisting Dirac Bands and Moiré Flat Bands in Magic-Angle Twisted Trilayer Graphene

Moiré superlattices that consist of two or more layers of two-dimensional materials stacked together with a small twist angle have emerged as a tunable platform to realize various correlated and topological phases, such as Mott insulators, unconventional uperconductivity and quantum anomalous Hall effect. Recently, the magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) has shown both robust superconductivity similar to magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) and other unique properties, including the Pauli-limit violating and re-entrant superconductivity. These rich properties are deeply rooted in its electronic structure under the influence of distinct moiré potential and mirror symmetry. Here, combining nanometer-scale spatially resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (nano-ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), we systematically measure the yet unexplored band structure of MATTG near charge neutrality. Our measurements reveal the coexistence of the distinct dispersive Dirac band with the emergent moiré flat band, showing nice agreement with the theoretical calculations. These results serve as a stepstone for further understanding of the unconventional superconductivity in MATTG.

Observation of Γ-valley moiré bands and emergent hexagonal lattice in twisted transition metal dichalcogenides

Twisted van der Waals heterostructures have recently been proposed as a condensed-matter platform for realizing controllable quantum models due to the low-energy moiré bands with specific charge distributions in moiré superlattices. Here, combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with sub-micron spatial resolution (μ-ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we performed a systematic investigation on the electronic structure of 5.1° twisted bilayer WSe2 that hosts correlated insulating and zero-resistance states. Interestingly, contrary to one's expectation, moiré bands were observed only at Γ-valley but not K-valley in μ-ARPES measurements; and correspondingly, our STM measurements clearly identified the real-space honeycomb- and Kagome-shaped charge distributions at the moiré length scale associated with the Γ-valley moiré bands. These results not only reveal the unsual valley dependent moiré-modified electronic structure in twisted transition metal dichalcogenides, but also highlight the Γ-valley moiré bands as a promising platform for exploring strongly correlated physics in emergent honeycomb and Kagome lattices at different energy scales.

Stop Filtering: Multi-View Attribute-Enhanced Dialogue Learning

There is a growing interest in improving the conversational ability of models by filtering the raw dialogue corpora. Previous filtering strategies usually rely on a scoring method to assess and discard samples from one perspective, enabling the model to enhance the corresponding dialogue attributes (e.g., consistency) more easily. However, the discarded samples may obtain high scores in other perspectives and can provide regularization effects on the model learning, which causes the performance improvement to be sensitive to the filtering ratio. In this work, we propose a multi-view attribute-enhanced dialogue learning framework that strengthens the attribute-related features more robustly and comprehensively. Instead of filtering the raw dataset to train the model, our framework first pre-trains the model on the raw dataset and then fine-tunes it through adapters on the selected sub-sets, which also enhances certain attributes of responses but without suffering from the problems mentioned above. Considering the variety of the dialogue attribute, we further design a multi-view enhancement mechanism, including multi-view selection and inter-view fusion. It groups the high-quality samples from multiple perspectives, respectively, and enhances different attributes of responses with the corresponding sample sets and adapters, keeping knowledge independent and allowing flexible integration. Empirical results and analysis show that our framework can improve the performance significantly in terms of enhancing dialogue attributes and fusing view-specific knowledge.
