Photon-induced thermal effects in superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators

We experimentally investigated the optical responses of a superconducting niobium resonator. It was found that, with increasing radiation power, the resonance frequency increases monotonically below around 500 mK, decreases monotonically above around 1 K and exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior at around 700 mK. These observations show that one can operate the irradiated resonator in three temperature regimes, depending on whether two-level system (TLS) effects or kinetic inductance effects dominate. Furthermore, we found that the optical responses at ultra-low temperatures can be qualitatively regarded as a photon-induced thermalization effect of TLSs, which could be utilized to achieve thermal sensitive photon detections.

Experimental demonstrations of high-Q superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators

We designed and successfully fabricated an absorption-type of superconducting coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonators. The resonators are made from a Niobium film (about 160 nm thick) on a high-resistance Si substrate, and each resonator is fabricated as a meandered quarter-wavelength transmission line (one end shorts to the ground and another end is capacitively coupled to a through feedline). With a vector network analyzer we measured the transmissions of the applied microwave through the resonators at ultra-low temperature (e.g., at 20 mK), and found that their loaded quality factors are significantly high, i.e., up to 10^6. With the temperature increases slowly from the base temperature (i.e., 20 mK), we observed the resonance frequencies of the resonators are blue shifted and the quality factors are lowered slightly. In principle, this type of CPW-device can integrate a series of resonators with a common feedline, making it a promising candidate of either the data bus for coupling the distant solid-state qubits or the sensitive detector of single photons.

Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg interferometry in multilevel superconducting flux qubit

Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg interferometry has been extensively investigated in quantum two-level systems, with particular interests on artificial system such as superconducting flux qubits. With increasing the driving field amplitude, more energy levels will be involved into the quantum evolution, which results in population inversion and many interesting interference patterns. These interference patterns can be used to obtain the parameters characterizing the system and probe dephasing mechanisms of the qubit. Most recently, experiments have been extended to the regime with higher-frequency and larger-amplitude driving field, in which the interference pattern exhibited more complicated characteristics. In this article, we give a universal description of the characteristics observed in both low-frequency and high-frequency regimes. Besides explaining the already observed experimental results, our theoretical model predicted many interesting phenomenon, which can be demonstrated by future experiments.

Population Inversion Induced by Landau-Zener Transition in a Strongly Driven rf-SQUID

Microwave resonances between discrete macroscopically distinct quantum states with single photon and multiphoton absorption are observed in a strongly driven radio frequency superconducting quantum interference device flux qubit. The amplitude of the resonant peaks and dips are modulated by the power of the applied microwave irradiation and a population inversion is generated at low flux bias. These results, which can be addressed with Landau-Zener transition, are useful to develop an alternative means to initialize and manipulate the flux qubit, as well as to do a controllable population inversion used in a micromaser.

A Security Price Volatile Trading Conditioning Model

We develop a theoretical trading conditioning model subject to price volatility and return information in terms of market psychological behavior, based on analytical transaction volume-price probability wave distributions in which we use transaction volume probability to describe price volatility uncertainty and intensity. Applying the model to high frequent data test in China stock market, we have main findings as follows: 1) there is, in general, significant positive correlation between the rate of mean return and that of change in trading conditioning intensity; 2) it lacks significance in spite of positive correlation in two time intervals right before and just after bubble crashes; and 3) it shows, particularly, significant negative correlation in a time interval when SSE Composite Index is rising during bull market. Our model and findings can test both disposition effect and herd behavior simultaneously, and explain excessive trading (volume) and other anomalies in stock market.

Play building blocks on population distribution of multilevel superconducting flux qubit with quantum interference

Recent experiments on Landau-Zener interference in multilevel superconducting flux qubits revealed various interesting characteristics, which have been studied theoretically in our recent work by simply using rate equation method [PRB 79, 094529, (2009)]. In this note we extend this method to the same system but with larger driving amplitude and higher driving frequency. The results show various anomalous characteristics, some of which have been observed in a recent work.

Quantum Jump Approach to Switching Process of a Josephson Junction Coupled to a Microscopic Two-Level System

With microwave irradiation, the switching current of a Josephson junction coupled to a microscopic two-level system jumps randomly between two discrete states. We modeled the switching process of the coupled system with quantum jump approach that was generally used in quantum optics. The parameters that affect the character of the quantum jumps between macroscopic quantum states are discussed. The results obtained from our theoretical analysis agree well with those of the experiments and provide a clear physical picture for the macroscopic quantum jumps in Josephson junctions coupled with two-level systems. In addition, quantum jumps may serve as a useful tool to investigate the microscopic two-level structures in solid-state systems.

Supercurrent and its quantum statistical properties in mesoscopic Josephson junction in presence of non-classical light fields

In this paper, we study the supercurrent in a mesoscopic Josephson junction (MJJ) and its quantum statistical properties in the presence of nonclassical light fields. We investigate in detail the influence of external nonclassical light fields on current-voltage step structures of the MJJ. We also study in detail quantum statistical properties of the supercurrent when the external quantum electromagnetic fields are even and odd coherent-state light fields. It is shown that the supercurrent in the MJJ exhibits both squeezing effect and quantum coherences. It is demonstrated that the MJJ can feel the difference not only between classical light fields and nonclassical light fields but also between different nonclassical light fields.

Introduction to Yangian in Physics

This is an introduction to the physical pictures of {\em Yangian} symmetry. All the discussions are based on the RTT relations which have been known to be related to the Hamiltonian formulations for quantum integrable systems. The explicit calculations of {\em Yangian} associated with $gl(2)$ are given through solving the RTT relations. It contains the Drinfeld's $Y(sl(2))$, $Y(sl(n))$ and Heisenberg type of Hopf algebras. Examples are emphasized to show the physical pictures, such as Hubbard model, Haldane-Shastry model, Long-range interaction models and Goryachev-Chaplygin(G-C) gyrostat. The example of the trigonometric extension of G-C gyrostat are also shown that leads to the non-commutative geometry naturally on the basis of the truncated $q$-affine algebra.

Long Range Interaction Models and Yangian Symmetry

The generalized Sutherland-Romer models and Yan models with internal spin degrees are formulated in terms of the Polychronakos' approach and RTT relation associated to the Yang-Baxter equation in consistent way. The Yangian symmetry is shown to generate both models. We finally introduce the reflection algebra K(u) to the long range models.
